The Class A gate had appeared overnight, three kilometers outside the eastern perimeter, and by morning it had already been designated priority clear.
Yoon-seo read the mission brief in the car on the way over and cross-referenced it against everything she could pull from memory. Class A dungeons in the novel had been landmarks — the places where the plot accelerated, where characters were tested in ways that mattered. She had read most of them with genuine attention, which was more than she could say for the Class B runs she'd skimmed through between meetings.
She remembered this one.
Not the layout — she'd forgotten the layout — but the event. Third floor, boss room, a creature the novel had described as an Amplifier: a dungeon boss whose primary ability was to locate the strongest energy signature in the room and draw it out by force. Amplify what was already there. Return it at volume.
For most Hunters, that meant exhaustion, disorientation, a power surge that burned through energy reserves faster than the body could manage.
For Si-woo, with a dark ability that was already volatile under emotional pressure, it meant something considerably less manageable.
The novel had handled it in about four paragraphs, she recalled. The darkness came out. The team was shaken. Si-woo pulled it back. The story moved on.
She had a feeling four paragraphs had undersold it.
---
The first two floors were hard in the way Class A floors were hard — not impossible, not beyond the team's ability, but requiring the kind of sustained focus that left no room for anything except what was directly in front of you. Yoon-seo worked harder than she had in any previous run, healing faster and with more precision than the week before, and discovered that fear was apparently excellent for concentration.
By the time they reached the third floor, the team was tired but intact. She had healed four separate injuries — nothing critical, all manageable — and her hands were steady in the particular way that came from having been too busy to be afraid for several hours running.
The boss room was large. High ceiling, open floor, the kind of space that a dungeon created when it needed room for something significant. The Amplifier was already active when they entered — she could feel it before she saw it, a pressure in the air that wasn't quite sound, like standing next to something vibrating at a frequency just below hearing.
The team spread into formation. She took her position at the rear.
The fight started.
---
She was monitoring Ha-eun's positioning — Ha-eun had taken a hit on the second floor that she'd waved off but that Yoon-seo was keeping an eye on — when the quality of the air in the room changed.
Not gradually. Between one breath and the next.
The darkness came from Si-woo like something that had been waiting for permission. Not the controlled, directed shadow she'd watched him use in combat — that was precise, shaped, deployed with intention. This was different. This spread. It moved across the floor in the way that actual darkness moved when a light source was suddenly removed, filling space the way water filled a container, finding every edge and corner and gap. It was cold in a way that had nothing to do with temperature — a cold that she felt behind her sternum and at the backs of her hands and in the particular silence that fell over the room as everyone in it registered what was happening.
Ha-eun stepped back. Then another step.
Min-seok moved to the wall, putting stone behind him.
Park Jun-ho, who was not a fighter and had better instincts about self-preservation than most people Yoon-seo had met, was already outside what she estimated to be the radius.
Even Si-jun — Si-jun, who she had never seen hesitate at anything — paused. One step back. Reassessing.
Yoon-seo stood where she was.
Not because she wasn't afraid. She was, clearly and specifically, in the way of someone whose body had correctly identified that something large and uncontrolled was happening nearby and would like very much to be somewhere else. Her heart was doing something emphatic. Her hands had gone cold.
But she knew something no one else in this room knew.
She had read to the end. She knew what this ability was, what it came from, what it was capable of and — more importantly — what it wasn't. The story had gotten things wrong, she'd learned that much in the past two weeks. But it had gotten one thing right: this darkness, whatever it looked like from the outside, was not what everyone in this room believed it to be.
It was not a curse. It had never been a curse.
She stayed where she was and watched Si-woo.
He was at the center of it — standing very still, head slightly down, both hands at his sides with the particular controlled tension of someone trying to do something very difficult without letting anyone see how difficult it was. The darkness moved around him like weather. Like something that knew him well enough to orbit.
And in the middle of it, between one second and the next, his eyes came up.
Not searching, not deliberate. The involuntary motion of someone losing their footing reaching for something solid. His gaze moved across the room — across the team members who had retreated, across the space they'd left — and found her.
She didn't move.
She didn't know if it helped. She had no way of knowing if a person standing still in the back of a boss room while someone else fought to contain their own ability counted as anything at all. But she held his gaze, steadily, the way she'd learned to hold difficult things in her previous life — not pretending they weren't difficult, just refusing to look away first.
The darkness contracted.
Slowly, with the visible effort of something resisting its own momentum, it pulled back toward him. The cold receded. The weight in the air thinned. The room became, degree by degree, a room again instead of whatever it had briefly been.
Si-woo lowered his hands.
The team moved back into formation without discussion, the way people did when they'd collectively decided the most useful thing was to pretend the last two minutes hadn't happened. The Amplifier, apparently disrupted by what it had drawn out, had retreated to the far end of the room. Si-jun called the approach. They finished the fight.
---
Outside, the evening air was cold in the normal way — temperature, nothing else. The team stood at the vehicles running through the post-clear routine: equipment checks, injury assessment, the brief debrief that Si-jun ran with the same efficiency he brought to everything.
Nobody mentioned the third floor.
Ha-eun and Min-seok talked about the second floor boss instead, the specific mechanics of it, with the focused energy of people who had found something else to look at. Park Jun-ho typed his report. Si-jun spoke quietly with Si-woo — two sentences, maybe three — and Si-woo listened with his eyes on the middle distance and nodded once, and then Si-jun went to check on Ha-eun and Si-woo walked to the far end of the parking area alone.
Yoon-seo packed the medical kit.
She heard him coming back before she saw him — that particular quiet gait, the one she'd catalogued enough times now to recognize without looking. She kept her hands on the kit clasps and didn't turn around.
He passed her.
Not stopping. Not slowing. Just passing, the way you passed someone in a corridor, and his voice came as he went by, low and even and directed at approximately the middle distance rather than at her specifically.
"You should have stepped back."
She watched his back as he kept walking. The same straight line, the same unhurried pace. Not waiting for an answer. Probably not expecting one.
"I know," she said, to the air in the space he'd just left.
She did know. She knew exactly what stepping back would have looked like, what it would have communicated, how it would have fit neatly into every established pattern of how people responded to Kwon Si-woo and his ability and the space he occupied in any room. She knew it would have been the sensible thing. The expected thing.
She had known all of that in the moment and chosen differently anyway, and standing here now in the cooling air with the medical kit in her hands, she found she still didn't regret it.
He had looked for something to hold onto, she thought. And she had been there.
That was all. That was the whole of it.
She closed the kit and told herself she believed that.
