CHAPTER 10 — THE FIRST TIME SHE PUSHED BACK
Monday arrived with the particular quality of Mondays that followed difficult weekends — not worse than the weekend, but carrying its residue, the way certain weather systems left a specific quality of light in the air even after the clouds had moved on.
Su Wanqing was at her workstation by seven forty, which was early even for her. She had slept well enough. She had eaten breakfast, which was not always the case. She had decided, somewhere between waking and arriving at the bus stop, that the question she had written down on Thursday night and not answered did not require answering this week. It required existing, which it was doing adequately on its own.
She opened the project folder and pulled up the fourth study.
In the five days since his comment, she had developed it further — pushed the geometry toward its conclusion, tested it against the system architecture requirements, worked through the secondary applications. It was resolving the way good work resolved: not by getting simpler but by getting clearer. The decisions were becoming more specific. The form was arriving at something that looked inevitable in retrospect, which was always the sign that it had been right.
She was working on the weight relationship between the primary mark and the wordmark when the email arrived.
---
She almost missed it. The notification came in at nine forty-seven, while she was in the middle of a comparison study, and she had trained herself not to break concentration for email notifications because broken concentration in design work was expensive to recover. She finished the comparison. She saved the file. Then she opened the email.
It was from Zhou Cheng, forwarding an internal decision memo. The subject line read: *Concept Phase — Scope Amendment, approved.*
She read it.
Then she read it again, more slowly.
The memo authorised the addition of a fourth concept territory to the development phase. A territory exploring what the memo described as "a brand narrative rooted in legacy and continuity" — a direction that was, as far as she could determine from the brief description, almost exactly the opposite of the positioning direction she had been developing for five weeks. The directive was signed by Lu Jingheng. The memo had been circulated to the project steering group. Zhou Cheng's forward to her carried no additional note.
She pulled up the original project brief. The kick-off meeting notes. The scope document she had signed at the end of week one.
The new territory was not in any of them.
She opened the competitive analysis framework. She opened the positioning rationale. She opened the concept direction summary she had submitted after the internal presentation, which had been approved and which formed the foundation for everything she had been building since.
None of it pointed toward a legacy-and-continuity narrative. That was, in fact, precisely what all of it was arguing against — the direction the existing identity was already occupying, the territory she had spent five weeks building a case for departing from.
She sat for a moment.
She was not angry yet. Anger was a second-order response, and this was still a first-order response situation — the phase where you established whether your understanding of the situation was correct before you decided what to do about it. She had learned, in three years of running her own practice without the buffer of a larger organisation, that a great deal of professional conflict came from people responding to their interpretation of a situation rather than to the situation itself. She was not going to do that.
She opened a reply to Zhou Cheng's forward and typed: *Can you arrange ten minutes with Mr. Lu today?*
She sent it and went back to work.
---
Zhou Cheng replied at ten fifty-three: *Mr. Lu can see you at four o'clock. Room 42B.*
She filed the confirmation and continued the comparison study.
At twelve-thirty Tang Xin came by with the offer of lunch, which Wanqing declined — she was not going to stop working, because stopping would require her to think about the four o'clock meeting rather than the work, and thinking about the meeting before she was ready to think about it would not improve either the thinking or the meeting. She ate at her desk. She finished the comparison study at two fifteen and spent the remainder of the afternoon on a secondary application problem that she had been deferring because it required sustained attention.
The sustained attention was useful. It kept her from rehearsing.
What she was doing instead of rehearsing was something she had learned to call *pre-thinking* — the process of working through the substance of what she needed to say in advance of saying it, so that in the room the thinking was already done and she only needed to find the words. It was different from rehearsal because it was not about performance. It was about arriving at the meeting with a clear understanding of what the actual problem was, distinct from her reaction to the problem.
The actual problem was not that he had made a decision without her. He was the CEO. He was entitled to make decisions without her, and she would not pretend otherwise. The actual problem was that the decision affected the work she was responsible for in a way that made the work worse — not marginally worse, fundamentally worse — and that she had information relevant to that problem that had not been included in the decision-making process.
That was the problem.
Her reaction to the problem — the specific quality of her reaction, which was sharper than it might have been if this were any other employer, on any other project, in any other building — was not something she was going to bring into the room with her. She had gotten very good at leaving things outside rooms.
She had learned, over many years, that rehearsing for difficult conversations was counterproductive. You rehearsed what you were going to say, and then the other person said something you had not anticipated, and you were stuck between your script and the actual conversation and you performed badly at both. Better to know what you needed to communicate and trust yourself to find the words in the room.
She knew what she needed to communicate: the scope change had been made without consulting the lead creative, the scope change contradicted the established creative direction, and there was a process problem that needed to be addressed before the practical problem could be solved.
She was going to say that clearly, once, and then stop talking and listen.
Tang Xin caught her at three fifty-five, putting on her jacket.
"Going up?"
"Yes."
Tang Xin looked at her with the specific expression she used when she had assessed a situation and formed a conclusion but had not been asked for it. Then: "Good luck."
"I don't need luck," Wanqing said. "I need him to have read the brief."
Tang Xin made the small sound that was her version of a laugh.
Wanqing went to the lift.
---
Room forty-two B had the same floor-to-ceiling windows and the same long table and the same view of the city that it had had on the morning she had walked in five weeks ago and found him standing in the doorway and the world had done its small, unauthorised contraction.
He was already there when she arrived, at the far end of the table, standing rather than sitting. Zhou Cheng was not in the room. This was new — every previous interaction on this floor had included Zhou Cheng.
She set the scope document and the brief on the table between them without preamble.
"The territory added in this morning's memo," she said. "Legacy and continuity. It wasn't in the original brief, it wasn't raised in any project meeting, and it contradicts the positioning direction that was approved after the internal presentation three weeks ago." She looked at him directly. "I need to understand why it was added before I can implement it responsibly."
He did not react to the word *responsibly*. She had chosen it deliberately — not as a challenge, but because it was accurate. Implementing a direction she did not understand the rationale for would produce worse work than implementing one she did, and she was not going to pretend otherwise for the sake of professional smoothness.
He looked at the documents on the table. Then he looked at her.
"There's a board meeting in six weeks," he said. "Two members are specifically interested in the legacy narrative — they've raised it in previous conversations about the repositioning. I need a direction in the room that speaks to that concern, regardless of whether it's the direction I intend to recommend."
She processed this.
It was a real reason. Not arbitrary, not careless — a specific strategic consideration that she had not had visibility into because it lived in board-level conversations she was not part of. She could see the logic of it clearly: he needed to show the board that the legacy position had been considered and evaluated, not simply ignored in favour of the newer direction.
The logic was sound.
The implementation was still wrong.
"A separate territory to address board concerns is reasonable," she said. "But what this memo authorises is a full additional concept territory — four to six weeks of development work, at the same level of resolution as the existing three territories. That's not what the board conversation requires. The board requires a variant within the existing direction that acknowledges the legacy context — two to three days of work, not six weeks." She opened her laptop and turned it toward him. "This is what that would look like."
She had not prepared slides. She had not prepared anything formal. What she had was the thinking she had been doing since nine forty-seven that morning — not written down, not rendered, but present in her mind with the specific clarity of a solution that had arrived while she was supposed to be doing something else.
She pulled up a blank document and sketched it out, talking as she worked: the relationship between the chosen-permanence direction and a legacy-inflected variant, the way the two could coexist in a presentation without contradicting each other, the visual and verbal language that would allow the board to see the legacy consideration without derailing the strategic recommendation.
She was aware, as she talked, that she was doing something she rarely did in professional contexts — thinking out loud, in real time, in front of someone, without the protective layer of a prepared presentation. She was doing it because it was the most efficient way to show him the thinking, and because the meeting was about the work, and because she had decided, at some point in the past five weeks, that performing certainty she did not have was less useful than demonstrating competence she did.
She finished.
She was aware, partway through, that the room had the quality it sometimes had in the kick-off meeting — the quality of two people working at the same level on the same problem, the specific atmosphere of genuine collaborative thinking rather than a presentation being received. She had not been in many rooms in five weeks that felt this way. She had not, if she was being precise about it, been in many rooms in the past three years that felt this way.
She did not examine this observation. She filed it and kept talking.
The rough framework on her screen was not polished. It had placeholder text and approximate geometries and the specific roughness of a thing made quickly to show thinking rather than product. She had once had a creative director who said that rough work shown in good faith was more persuasive than polished work shown defensively, because rough work said *I trust you to see past the surface to the idea*, and polished work said *I don't trust you to do that*. She had disagreed with him about many things. She had not disagreed with him about that.
He had not interrupted once.
---
The silence lasted long enough that she looked up from the laptop to check whether he was still paying attention.
He was. He was looking at the rough framework on her screen with the quality of attention she had come to recognise over the past weeks — the complete, unsplit attention of someone entirely inside a problem. Not evaluating the presentation. Reading the work.
She had told herself, on Thursday night, sitting on the floor with cold tea and an unanswered question, that she was not going to let herself remember things about him that she had worked to forget. She had been reasonably successful at this, on balance, for five weeks.
She was somewhat less successful at it right now.
Because she recognised this. The specific quality of his engagement with a problem he found genuinely interesting — the way the rest of the room disappeared, the way his attention narrowed to exactly the point that mattered, the way he was not performing consideration but actually considering. She had watched him do this in meetings, had registered it without letting herself name it. She was naming it now, involuntarily, because it was directly in front of her.
She had liked this about him. Six years ago.
She had not expected to be sitting across a table watching him do it again.
He looked up.
"This addresses the board concern," he said. "It also addresses the coherence problem." A pause. "And it's faster."
"By about ten days, yes."
He looked at the screen for another moment. Then: "Proceed with the variation approach. Send me the framework by Wednesday."
She closed the laptop and stood up.
She had what she had come for. The meeting was over. She was going to leave the room in the same professional manner in which she had entered it, and she was going to take the lift back to the twenty-sixth floor, and she was going to continue with the fourth study until the end of the day.
She was at the door when he spoke again.
She had not heard him move — he had remained at the far end of the table, and his voice was not raised, and yet it reached her with the particular quality of something that was intended to reach her rather than to fill the room.
"You should have pushed back sooner."
She stopped.
Not because the sentence required a response. Because it required a moment — the specific moment of hearing something accurate said plainly, without judgment, and deciding what to do with it.
He was right. She had known, from the first week, that the scope was being managed in a way that bypassed her as lead creative. She had noted it, had documented it in her own notes, had discussed it with no one except Tang Xin in the most oblique terms. She had not pushed back because she had been managing too many other things — the work, the situation, the daily calculation of how much professional capital to spend and where.
She had waited too long.
"I know," she said.
She left.
---
The lift moved without sound, the way it always did.
She stood with her back to the mirrored wall and watched the floor numbers descend and thought about what had just happened in the specific way she thought about things immediately after they happened — not with the analytical distance that would come later, but with the raw, close quality of a thing that was still in the process of becoming past.
She had pushed back. She had been correct. He had listened. The work was better for it.
These were good outcomes.
She was also aware that somewhere in the past forty minutes, something had shifted in the way she was experiencing his presence — not in the direction of anything she was going to name right now, not in a direction that required action or interpretation or the opening of rooms she had kept closed. Just a shift. The specific adjustment of a thing that had been held at careful distance being, for forty minutes, not at careful distance, and the awareness of that as something that had occurred.
The lift stopped at twenty-six.
She walked to her workstation. She sat down. She opened the fourth study.
Tang Xin did not ask. She was working on her own screens, and she did not look up, and this was the correct response and the response Wanqing needed, and she was grateful for it in the quiet way she was grateful for most of the things Tang Xin did correctly without being asked.
She worked until six thirty.
She went home.
She made dinner and ate it at the table instead of the desk, which was an improvement, and she did not open her laptop, which was also an improvement, and she sat for a while after dinner in the kitchen with the window slightly open and the night air coming in and thought about the sentence she had said and the sentence he had said and the interval between them, which had been approximately four seconds and had felt longer and had contained, in the specific compression of four seconds, a great many things she was not ready to unpack.
*You should have pushed back sooner.*
*I know.*
She washed the dishes.
She went to bed.
She did not, for the first time in five weeks, go through the careful ritual of reminding herself why she was managing the situation the way she was managing it. She simply got into bed and lay in the dark and let the day settle around her without analysis.
In the morning, she was going to send him a framework.
