CHAPTER 9 — THE WOMAN IN THE ROOM
The fourth week had a different quality from the first three.
Su Wanqing noticed this on Tuesday morning — not as a dramatic shift, but as the specific easing of a tension she had been maintaining without fully registering. The first three weeks had required a particular kind of continuous alertness: the alertness of someone learning a new environment, managing a reentry after a long absence, navigating a situation that had no clean map. By the fourth week, the map existed. It was imperfect and provisional, but it existed, and having it allowed her to put some of the alertness down.
She was at her workstation by seven forty-five. The floor was half-empty at this hour — the early arrivals, the people who preferred the morning quiet. She had a coffee and the mark studies she was developing for the second phase of the concept direction, and for the first time in four weeks she was simply doing the work without managing anything around it.
The sketches were going well.
This was the part of design she had missed most in the bad years — not the strategy, not the client work, not the professional identity of being a designer. The specific physical act of making marks on a surface and having them say something. The relationship between the hand and the eye and the problem. It was a form of thinking that bypassed language, and she had not known how much she depended on it until she had lost the capacity for it and had to rebuild it slowly, over months, starting with shapes so simple they barely qualified.
She was not making simple shapes anymore.
She had four studies pinned to the digital board, each one exploring a different answer to the question she had posed herself: what did *chosen permanence* look like as a mark? Not what did it mean in language — she had done that part. What did it look like in form, in weight, in the specific geometry of a thing that declared itself present rather than accumulated itself present.
The fourth study was the one. She had known it since she'd made it at eleven the previous night — the quality of recognition that came when a solution arrived rather than when you arrived at a solution. She was developing the others because the process required it, because you did not present one mark and call it done, because the conversation with the client needed the context of comparison. But the fourth was the one.
She was working on the secondary applications when the lift opened at ten thirty-two.
---
She registered it peripherally — the particular recalibration of a room when someone unfamiliar enters it, the quality of attention shifting for a fraction of a second before returning to its ordinary state. A visitor. She did not look up immediately. Visitors came to the creative floor occasionally — clients, occasionally; partners sometimes; people who had gotten out of the lift on the wrong floor with some frequency. It was not relevant to what she was doing.
She looked up thirty seconds later, when the usual motion of the floor resumed without the visitor leaving.
The woman was standing near the lift doors, looking at the room with the specific expression of someone who had arrived somewhere and was assessing whether they were in the right somewhere. She was approximately Wanqing's age, perhaps slightly younger. She was wearing a coat in a shade of grey that had been chosen by someone with a precise understanding of colour — not warm grey, not cool grey, the specific middle frequency that was the hardest to find and the most useful to own. Her hair was pulled back in a way that looked effortless and had required considerable effort. She did not look like she belonged on the creative floor. She did not look like she did not belong anywhere.
Zhou Cheng was not with her.
Wanqing registered this — the absence of the usual escort for a visitor of this apparent seniority, which meant either the visit was informal or the visitor had gotten separated from whoever was supposed to be accompanying her.
The woman's eyes moved across the room and arrived at Wanqing.
A beat. The moment of mutual assessment that happened between any two strangers in a room — quick, instinctive, largely unconscious.
The woman smiled. It was a particular kind of smile: polite, not warm, the smile of someone who had learned to make social interactions easier for both parties by indicating non-hostility before anything else. The smile of a person who had spent a great deal of their life being looked at and had developed fluency in managing it.
"I think I took a wrong turn," she said. Her voice was level, slightly dry. "I'm looking for the forty-second floor."
Wanqing stood. "The express lift is on the other side of the reception desk — the one you came from doesn't go above thirty. Zhou Cheng should be at the main reception."
"Thank you." The smile again — the same quality, the same register. "I'm sorry to interrupt."
"You didn't," Wanqing said.
The woman nodded once and walked back toward the reception area. She moved with the ease of someone accustomed to navigating unfamiliar spaces without showing the navigation. The coat disappeared around the partition.
Wanqing sat back down.
She looked at the mark study on her screen for a moment without seeing it, then refocused and continued.
The work was on the screen. She could see it clearly — the geometry of the fourth study, the weight distribution, the specific solution she had spent three hours finding the previous night. It was still correct. The solution had not changed because of what she had just heard.
She looked at it for approximately ninety seconds before she understood that she was not, in fact, seeing it. This was something she had learned to notice: the difference between looking and seeing. Looking was the physical act. Seeing required a quality of attention that was currently occupied elsewhere, in the lower registers, in the part of her that processed certain categories of information more slowly and more thoroughly than the rest.
She saved the file. She looked at the mark study one more time — really looked at it, the way you looked at something when you needed to come back to yourself — and let the geometry of it do what geometry did: clarify. Return her to the problem, which was solvable, which had clear parameters, which was a thing she could do something about.
Then she went back to work.
---
Tang Xin arrived at her workstation twelve minutes later.
She did not sit down — she stood at the edge of the desk in the way she stood when she had something to say that she was deciding how to say.
"You know who that was," she said.
It was not a question, which was odd, since Wanqing had given no indication of recognising anyone.
"No," Wanqing said.
"Bai Yueru." Tang Xin said it in the flat tone she used for information she was delivering rather than interpreting. "Bai family. They have a long partnership with Lu — property development, some joint ventures. She and Lu Jingheng have an engagement announcement expected sometime this quarter." A brief pause. "The Bai family and the Lu family have been discussing it for about two years."
Wanqing looked at her screen.
"That's useful context for the project," she said. Which was true — understanding the stakeholder relationships around the Lu family was professionally relevant. It was also not why Tang Xin was telling her this, and they both knew it, and neither of them was going to say so.
"I thought you should know," Tang Xin said. And left it there, with the specificity of someone who had said exactly as much as was necessary.
She went back to her workstation.
Wanqing stayed with her screen.
---
Bai Yueru.
She had heard the name before. She knew she had heard it before — the recognition was immediate and low and located somewhere in the body before it arrived in the mind, the way certain sounds and certain names and certain combinations of syllables could reach a part of the nervous system that predated conscious thought.
She had seen the name once, six years ago, on the back of a photograph.
She did not permit herself to go further than that right now. She had learned — slowly, expensively, with considerable professional support — that there were certain thoughts that needed to be approached at specific times and in specific conditions, not because they were too large to think but because thinking them at the wrong moment created interference that served no one. She was at her workstation at ten forty-five on a Wednesday morning. This was not the right moment.
She looked at the mark study.
The geometry of it was right — the weight, the negative space, the specific quality of a form that had decided to be exactly what it was and no more and no less. She had found this the previous night after three hours of not finding it, and the finding had produced the particular relief of something resolving, and she had looked at it for a long time before she went to sleep.
She looked at it now.
She made three small adjustments and saved the file.
---
The afternoon passed in the ordinary way of productive afternoons — work that moved, decisions that resolved, the specific satisfaction of a thing going well. She hit a deadline at two o'clock. She replied to three project emails. She had a brief conversation with one of the digital leads about the system architecture for the secondary mark, which was useful and resolved two open questions she had been carrying. She drank a second coffee at three, which she knew would affect her sleep and did anyway, because the three o'clock energy deficit was real and she was not going to fall behind on the work because of a circadian preference.
Tang Xin did not bring up the earlier conversation again. This was characteristic of her — she said what she needed to say and then she let it exist without returning to it. Wanqing had come to think of this as one of her more valuable qualities.
The name Bai Yueru sat in a closed room at the back of Wanqing's attention, present and unaddressed, in the way she had learned to keep certain things when she was not ready to open them. She was not ready yet. She would be. She had been trained, over three years of careful rebuilding, in the art of not-yet — the ability to acknowledge that something required her attention without attending to it before she was equipped to.
She left at six. She said goodnight to Tang Xin and took the lift to the ground floor and walked to the bus stop in the early evening air, which was cold in the specific way of late autumn transitioning toward something colder, and she stood and waited without thinking about anything in particular.
---
She sat on the floor again.
Back against the sofa, knees bent, the apartment quiet around her. She had made tea but was not drinking it. Outside, the city made its nighttime sounds — the specific urban register that she had learned to find comforting in the way you found comforting things you could not control but could be present to.
She opened the question she had been keeping closed all day.
Bai Yueru.
She had seen the name on the back of a photograph, six years ago, in the hours after everything had ended. She had seen a photograph — she had been sent a photograph, or had found a photograph, the specific circumstance was a part of the memory she kept at a distance — and the photograph had shown Lu Jingheng and a woman and the specific quality of their proximity that had communicated what it was intended to communicate. On the back: handwriting she did not recognise, and a name.
She had not known then what the name meant. She knew now.
This was new information, and new information required processing, and processing required the specific kind of attention she had been giving it: slow, patient, without forcing a conclusion. She sat with it.
He had been engaged, or had been planning to be engaged, or had been directed toward an engagement — this was the version of the story that fitted what she knew. The photograph had not been spontaneous. The name on the back had not been spontaneous. Something had been in place for a long time, something that predated her, something she had not known about when she had been part of his life and had not been told when she was being removed from it.
She sat with this.
There was an anger in it, somewhere. She could locate it — a specific tightness that was different from grief, that had the quality of having been wronged rather than simply having lost. She did not push the anger away. She had learned, with considerable difficulty, not to push things away because they were uncomfortable, because the things you pushed away did not disappear, they simply moved somewhere less accessible and more damaging.
She let the anger be there.
It was not a new anger. It was a version of an anger she had felt before — six years ago, and in the months that followed, and occasionally in the years since, in the specific way that old wounds could ache under certain kinds of pressure. She knew this anger. She had sat with it many times. She knew its shape and its edges and the specific territory it occupied and did not occupy.
It was not going to ruin her. She was not twenty-two anymore. She had, at considerable cost and over considerable time, developed the ability to be angry without being consumed by it, which was a skill she had not previously possessed and which she was occasionally grateful for in the specific way you were grateful for things you had been forced to learn rather than chosen to.
She was angry.
She was also tired — a specific tiredness, the tiredness that came from carrying something at a careful distance for a long time and having it suddenly be much closer. She had known, when she took this job, that it would be adjacent to the damage. She had calculated the adjacency and decided it was manageable. She had been mostly right. Tonight it was less manageable than it had been on most other nights, and that was allowed, and it did not mean she had made the wrong decision.
She sat with the anger and the tiredness and let them be what they were.
She also let something else be there — a question that was harder to sit with than the anger, because the anger was at least clear: *Are you actually all right?*
Not in the broad sense. In the specific sense. With this. With being in the same building as him every day. With knowing that whatever his life had become since then, it had a shape that did not include her, and that the shape had a name and a grey coat and a polite smile that was not warm.
She did not know.
She had thought, for most of the past three years, that the answer was yes. She had done the work. She had rebuilt. She had learned to carry the past in the way that the past required to be carried — present, acknowledged, not in the driver's seat. She had been, by every measure she had available, all right.
She was not certain, tonight, whether all right was a state that required his absence, or whether it was a state that could coexist with his presence.
She did not know.
She wrote this down — not much, just the question and the not-knowing, four lines in the notebook she kept on the table. She had learned that some things needed to be externalised before they could be set down. She wrote it and set it down.
Then she opened her laptop, because the alternative was sitting with the question for longer than was useful, and she had learned the difference between sitting with things productively and sitting with them past the point of return.
---
The project folder had a new notification.
A comment on the mark studies file, timestamped nine-fourteen that evening. She had uploaded the four studies at four o'clock — before she left, after the conversation with the digital lead, when the afternoon light had been doing something specific to the screen that made her want to look at the studies one more time before she sent them.
The comment was four words:
*The fourth study. Develop this one.*
She read it twice.
She looked at the fourth study on her secondary monitor — the one she had been working on all morning, the one she had been building the others around, the one that had arrived rather than been arrived at. The study that was the one.
He had looked at four studies and selected the same one she had.
She did not know what to do with this. She had filed a great many things under the category of *do not know what to do with this* in the past four weeks, and this went there too, into the room that was getting gradually fuller, that she would have to open at some point and examine properly.
But she was also aware of the specific quality of what she was feeling — the particular frequency of being seen accurately, of someone looking at your work and identifying exactly what you knew to be true about it. It was not the same as a compliment. It was closer to being understood on a specific point, without the point having been explained.
She had not felt that in a long time.
She closed the laptop and did not let herself think about it further. She drank the tea, which had gone cold. She went to bed at a reasonable hour.
She did not, this time, give herself ten seconds. She did not think she had ten seconds worth of anything left tonight.
She went to sleep.
