CHAPTER 8 — WHAT SHE DID IN THE ROOM
The concept presentation was at two o'clock.
Su Wanqing had been ready since eleven.
This was not anxiety — or not only anxiety, which was a distinction she had learned to make. There was a version of early preparation that came from fear, from the compulsive need to over-control things that could not be controlled, which she recognised in herself and managed. And there was a version that came from the nature of the work itself: some things simply required more time than people allocated to them, and a presentation of this significance, to an audience of this seniority, on a project with this level of executive investment, was one of those things.
She had reviewed the deck four times. She had printed the speaker notes and read them back against the slides. She had prepared, in a separate document she did not intend to use, three pages of data and comparative analysis that sat outside the main narrative — backup material, the kind you brought to difficult rooms and hoped not to need.
She had learned, in three years of rebuilding a practice from scratch, that difficult rooms were the ones you prepared for most carefully and appeared most relaxed in. The preparation was not for the room. The preparation was so that when the room stopped following the plan, you had enough of the plan inside you to improvise from it rather than away from it.
Tang Xin came by her workstation at one-thirty.
"How are you."
"Fine," Wanqing said.
"You've been staring at that slide for six minutes."
"I'm thinking."
"The slide hasn't changed."
Wanqing looked up. Tang Xin was leaning against the desk partition with the specific expression of someone who was not going to say anything useful but was going to be present anyway, which was, Wanqing had come to understand, Tang Xin's primary mode of support.
"The territories are right," Wanqing said. "I'm confident in the territories."
"I know."
"Director Meng is going to have questions about the departure from the existing visual language."
"Probably."
"I have answers for those questions."
"I know," Tang Xin said again. "That's not what you're thinking about."
Wanqing looked back at the slide. It was the opening frame of the second territory — the one that represented the most significant departure from the current Lu Corporation identity. The one that would require the most justification for people who were comfortable with the existing version and had not been thinking about the problem for as long as she had.
"Go," Tang Xin said. "You'll be better in the room than sitting here."
She was not wrong.
---
The conference room on thirty-eight had been reconfigured since the financial review two weeks ago. The table was the same, but the chairs had been rearranged and the display system was set up for a full presentation rather than a data review. Twelve people arrived in ones and twos — division heads, two board members who were in the building for other meetings, a strategy director Wanqing had not met. Zhou Cheng was at the side of the room with his folder.
Lu Jingheng came in last.
He sat at the head of the table and looked at the display and did not look at her. This had become a recognisable pattern: he was present in the room, aware of everything in it, and did not direct his attention at her unless there was a professional reason to do so. She had filed this under the same category as the feedback differential — data, observed, not yet fully interpreted.
She connected her laptop to the display and pulled up the first slide.
This was the moment she had always found clarifying — not the preparation, not the aftermath, but the specific instant before. The room was settled, the audience present, the deck ready. Everything that could be done had been done. What happened next was just the work itself.
She had once read that experienced performers described stage fright not as fear of failure but as the body's recognition of significance. She thought this was correct. What she felt before rooms like this was not fear — it was the awareness that what she was about to do mattered, and that mattering was uncomfortable and also the point.
"Thank you for your time," she said, in the neutral professional voice she used for rooms like this. "I'm going to walk you through three concept territories for the Lu Corporation brand repositioning. Each territory represents a distinct strategic direction — they're not variations on a theme, they're genuinely different choices, each with different implications for how the Group presents itself in the new sectors." She paused. "My recommendation is in the materials, but I want to be clear that all three are viable. The decision depends on what the Group wants to say, not on what's technically achievable."
She advanced to the first territory.
The first ten minutes went well. The first territory was the most conservative of the three — the one that built from the existing identity rather than departing from it — and it was designed to be first for exactly this reason: it established credibility, showed she understood what Lu Corporation was currently communicating, and created a baseline against which the subsequent territories could be measured. Heads nodded. A few notes were taken. Director Meng, seated midway down the table, listened with the focused expression of someone processing rather than resisting.
She advanced to the second territory.
The second territory was the significant one. It was the direction she believed in — the one built from the "chosen permanence" framework, the one that committed to the tension between institutional weight and creative credibility rather than resolving it. It was the direction that looked least like the current Lu Corporation identity. She had known, when she built it, that it would require the most defence.
She had not anticipated where the defence would need to come from.
She was midway through the positioning rationale — three slides in, building the logical case — when Director Meng said it.
"This doesn't look like Lu Corporation."
Not a question. Not a request for clarification. A statement delivered with the flat certainty of someone who had formed a conclusion and was expressing it as fact. The specific register of a senior person in a room full of people who were waiting to see how the situation resolved.
The room shifted. She felt it — the collective attention recalibrating, the particular quality of people holding still to see what would happen next. Seven years ago, this would have been the moment she apologised or softened or redirected to something safer. Three years ago, she would have defended the work on its own terms and probably been right and definitely been heard as defensive.
She did neither of those things.
What she did was slower and more deliberate than either of those options, and it required the specific kind of intelligence that had nothing to do with design knowledge and everything to do with having spent three years paying very careful attention to rooms.
She had been in difficult presentations before. She had been in presentations where clients said things that were factually incorrect and had to be corrected. She had been in presentations where the feedback was hostile and the hostility was personal. She had been in presentations that had gone wrong in every way a presentation could go wrong, including ways she had not anticipated.
What she had learned from those experiences was a single principle, which she had arrived at gradually and now held with the confidence of something tested: the stated objection is rarely the actual objection. People in professional settings almost never said what they were actually concerned about. They said the version of it that had available vocabulary. The job was to find the underlying concern and address it, not to argue with the version on the surface.
Director Meng was not concerned about aesthetics.
She had watched him, in the first ten minutes of the presentation, track a set of financial projections that had nothing to do with the brand direction. She had watched him glance, twice, at the implementation cost column on the supplementary data sheet she had provided. She had watched him lean slightly forward at one specific slide — not the one about visual language, but the one about audience segmentation in the new sectors, the one that implied the existing identity was not reaching the people Lu Corporation needed to reach.
He was a finance person looking at a change of significant scale and asking himself whether the change was worth the risk.
The answer to that question lived in numbers, not in visual language. She had the numbers.
She put the clicker down on the table — deliberately, unhurriedly, the gesture of someone choosing to stop and address something rather than move past it.
"When you say it doesn't look like Lu Corporation," she said, "which Lu Corporation are you referring to — the one that exists now, or the one you want to exist in three years?"
The question landed in a silence that lasted long enough to be noticeable.
Director Meng looked at her. Not with hostility — with the particular expression of someone who had said something and received a response that required him to think rather than continue. He was a finance person. Finance people, in Wanqing's experience, responded well to being asked to think precisely.
He did not answer immediately.
She picked up the clicker and went one slide back.
"I want to show you something I prepared outside the main deck," she said, "because I think it's relevant to the question you're actually asking." She pulled up the comparative data — the three pages she had brought and not intended to use.
She did not rush.
This was important — the pace of what she was doing mattered as much as the content. If she moved quickly through the data, it would read as defensive. She moved through it the way she moved through the design territories: at the pace of someone who had thought about this carefully and had no reason to hurry, because the argument was sound and sound arguments did not require momentum to survive scrutiny.
She let Director Meng look at each slide for long enough to read it.
She did not talk over the silence. Letting him read was giving him the respect of his own assessment, which was a more effective form of persuasion than any commentary she could have provided. Finance people trusted their own reading of data more than they trusted anyone's description of it. This was correct behaviour in a finance person, and she was not going to work against it.
Market analysis, competitor brand positioning, the projected audience profile for the new sectors. Numbers. "The existing Lu Corporation identity performs well in its current market — finance and property, institutional trust, established credibility. These are the associations it has built over twenty years, and they're real and valuable." She advanced through the data. "The new sectors read this identity as conservative. Not untrustworthy — conservative. In design and technology audiences, conservative is a specific signal. It means: we are not one of you."
She looked at Director Meng. "The question isn't whether the new territory looks like Lu Corporation now. The question is whether Lu Corporation now looks like what Lu Corporation needs to be." She paused. "That's a risk question, not a design question. And the risk of not changing is higher than the risk of changing, by these numbers."
The room held for a moment.
Then Director Meng looked at the data slide and made a note.
---
She completed the presentation without further interruption.
The third territory — the most restrained of the three — served its function as a comparison point. By the time she reached it, the room had moved past the interruption and into genuine engagement. Questions came from three different people, none of them hostile. Director Meng asked two of them. The second was about implementation cost modelling, which meant he had already moved from *whether* to *how*, which was the transition that mattered.
Zhou Cheng was writing in his folder.
Lu Jingheng asked nothing.
She had been aware of this throughout — the quality of attention at the head of the table that did not resolve into questions or comments, that simply watched. She had learned, over the past three weeks, that his silence was not absence. He asked questions when the questions served the room. When the room was working, he did not interrupt it.
The presentation ended at three forty-two. People gathered their things. Director Meng nodded at her — not warmly, but with the specific nod of someone who had revised an assessment and was acknowledging the revision. She received it without expression.
She was closing her laptop when Zhou Cheng appeared at her elbow.
"Mr. Lu would like a word."
---
The room emptied.
She stood at the near end of the table. He was still at the head — not seated, standing now, with the file Zhou Cheng had left and his jacket straightened and the quality of someone who was about to leave but had decided not to yet.
He looked at her for a moment.
"How did you know it was about risk?" he said. "Not about aesthetics."
Not *well done*. Not *good work*. Not any of the standard vocabulary of approval or evaluation. A question. The question of someone who wanted to understand the mechanism, not the outcome.
She considered it.
"He looked at the financial projections slide," she said. "Before he said anything. That's not what someone does when they're having an aesthetic reaction. That's what someone does when they're afraid of a number." She paused. "The comment about the identity was real — he meant it — but it was the language available to him for a different concern. People often say the thing they have vocabulary for rather than the thing they actually mean."
A silence.
"That's a useful thing to notice," he said.
Three words. Delivered with the same neutral quality as *welcome to the team*, and yet — not the same. *Welcome to the team* had been closure. This was not closure. This was the kind of sentence that left the door open, that acknowledged something without finishing with it, that expected more conversation even when there was not going to be more conversation right now.
She had forgotten that he spoke like this.
She had spent six years forgetting a great many things about him, with varying degrees of success, and she had thought she had managed this one. The specific way he asked questions that were not quite questions. The way he said things that functioned as completions while behaving like openings. She had filed this under the broad category of things she was not going to think about, and she had been successful at not thinking about it until approximately forty-five seconds ago.
"Thank you," she said. The two syllables were professional and sufficient and shut the door firmly.
She picked up her bag and walked out.
---
The lift took longer than usual.
She stood in the corridor outside room thirty-eight and waited for it, and when it came she got in and stood with her back to the mirror and her bag at her feet and watched the floor numbers descend with the focused attention of someone performing a simple task.
Twenty-six.
She had said *thank you* and she had left and those were the correct things to have done. The presentation was over. The territories were approved for further development. Director Meng had moved from resistance to implementation questions. These were good outcomes, professionally, and she was going to focus on them.
She was not going to think about the fact that he had asked her a question about her own thinking process, which was a different category of question from anything he had asked in the previous three weeks. She was not going to think about what that category of question meant, or what it had meant before, or why her body had registered it with the specific internal shift of something falling into a familiar groove that she had thought was closed.
The doors opened on twenty-six.
Tang Xin was at her workstation, which meant she had come back from the presentation before Wanqing. She looked up when Wanqing came in.
"Well?"
"The territories are approved for development," Wanqing said. "Director Meng has questions about the implementation timeline. I'll send a follow-up by Friday."
Tang Xin waited.
"It went well," Wanqing said.
"I know it went well. I watched the last twenty minutes through the window." Tang Xin turned back to her screen. "I meant the other part."
Wanqing put her bag down. She sat at her workstation. She opened her laptop.
"There wasn't another part," she said.
Tang Xin did not reply. This was, Wanqing was understanding, Tang Xin's version of disagreeing without arguing — the specific silence of someone who did not accept a statement and was not going to pretend otherwise but also was not going to press.
Wanqing opened the phase two brief and began to read it.
The words on the page were clear and specific and required her full attention, and she gave them her full attention, and the quality of that attention was only slightly imperfect in the way of someone who is giving most of their mind to one thing and a small remainder to something else — a question asked at a table, the particular way a sentence had been left open, the years it had taken her to forget that someone used to speak to her like that.
She read the brief.
Outside, the city continued its patient, indifferent work.
