CHAPTER 7 — THE PEOPLE WHO STAY
Saturday had a different quality of light.
Su Wanqing had noticed this in the first weeks after she had started going outside again — the way the same city looked different on a Saturday morning, not because anything had changed but because the mode of looking had changed. Weekdays had a direction to them. You moved through them toward something. Saturdays just existed, and the light understood this, and came in at a different angle.
She sat at her desk with her coffee and did not open her laptop.
This was a practice she had developed deliberately, over the course of two years that had required deliberate practices: Saturday mornings were not for work. Not the first two hours, at minimum. She was allowed to sit and drink her coffee and look at the city through the window and not be productive, because productivity was not the correct frame for every hour of every day, and because the version of herself that had made productivity the only frame for every hour had not been a sustainable version.
The apartment was small and orderly in the way of someone who had recently moved in and had not yet decided whether to stay. The desk by the window was the most settled part of it — the surface she used most, marked by the specific accumulation of a working life: the corner of a printed colour reference, a mug that had become a pen holder, a sketchbook she had started three months ago and was filling slowly. The rest of the space was functional but provisional. She had not hung anything on the walls. She had not decided what to hang.
She was still deciding a lot of things.
Her phone buzzed.
*Tang Xin: Market. Thirty minutes.*
Not a question. Wanqing looked at the message and then at her coffee, which was two-thirds full and still warm. She thought about the concept territory revisions she had mentally scheduled for this afternoon, which was her Saturday afternoon plan, which was the kind of plan Saturday afternoons were supposed to displace.
She typed: *Fine.*
She put on her jacket and went outside.
---
The Nanshi market on a Saturday morning was a specific kind of organised chaos that Wanqing had been past many times and never properly inside. The stalls ran along both sides of the covered walkway — vegetables, fruit, dried goods, a fishmonger at the far end whose presence announced itself before you arrived. The crowd moved with the unhurried purposefulness of people who had nowhere urgent to be and knew exactly what they were looking for.
Tang Xin moved through it like someone who had been coming here for years.
This was the first time Wanqing had seen her outside of the Lu Corporation building, and the difference was informative. At the office, Tang Xin was efficient and direct and slightly intimidating in the way of someone who processed information very quickly and had limited patience for people who did not. Here she was also efficient and direct and slightly intimidating, but differently — she knew the woman at the leafy greens stall by name, and the name of the woman's daughter, and she spent four minutes discussing the relative merits of two varieties of winter melon in the specific way that implied she had opinions about winter melon that predated this conversation by years.
She also bargained. Not aggressively — she bargained the way someone bargained who enjoyed the social ritual of it more than the financial outcome, which was a different activity and a more pleasant one. Wanqing watched her spend three minutes reducing the price of a bunch of spring onions by an amount that was not going to change either person's financial situation and understood that the three minutes were not about the spring onions.
"You come here every week," Wanqing said, when they had moved on.
"Most weeks. My grandmother brought me when I was small." Tang Xin was examining a tray of persimmons with the focused attention she usually gave to design proofs. "She said you should always know where your food comes from. I thought that was very old-fashioned at the time and I think it's correct now."
"What changed?"
"I moved to three different cities in four years for work." Tang Xin selected two persimmons and paid for them. "You lose the thread of a place when you move too much. I decided I didn't want to lose it anymore."
Wanqing thought about her own apartment, the bare walls, the unsettled quality of a space that had not yet been committed to. She thought about this without saying anything.
Tang Xin handed her one of the persimmons. "They're best now. Another two weeks and the season's over."
Wanqing accepted it.
They spent another twenty minutes moving through the rest of the market. Wanqing carried the bag Tang Xin had handed her without question, because the bag had been handed to her and putting it down would have required an explanation she did not want to have. She found herself, without particularly meaning to, paying attention.
Tang Xin moved through the market the way people moved through spaces they had claimed for their own — not quickly, not slowly, but with the ease of someone for whom the space did not require navigation. She knew where the good things were. She knew which stallholders were worth talking to and which ones preferred the transaction to be transactional. She bought a winter melon and a paper bag of dried mushrooms and a bunch of something leafy that Wanqing could not immediately identify, and she managed all of this while maintaining a running commentary that was half market gossip and half genuine food knowledge and wholly unlike the person Wanqing had been sitting next to for two weeks in a professional context.
This, Wanqing thought, was who Tang Xin was when the performance layer was off.
She tried to locate her own equivalent — the version of herself that existed outside the professional context, outside the careful construction of the competent person who had her work together. The version that bought things at markets and knew people's names.
She was working on it.
She shifted the bag to her other shoulder and followed Tang Xin to the coffee place.
---
They found a coffee place on the edge of the market — small, four tables, the kind of establishment that had been in the same location for twenty years and had no interest in being discovered. Tang Xin ordered without looking at the menu. Wanqing ordered the same thing.
"Where were you before this?" Tang Xin said, when the coffee arrived. She was looking at the street outside rather than at Wanqing, which was a way of making the question easier to answer or not answer.
"Freelance, mostly. Three years. Before that, a studio that closed." Wanqing wrapped her hands around the cup. "I built back up slowly."
"What kind of work?"
"Brand identity. Positioning. Some UX consulting when the identity work was quiet." She paused. "The kind of practice you build when you're starting over — you take what comes and you get better at the things that come most often."
Tang Xin nodded. The nod of someone who recognised the shape of what was being described without requiring it to be explained further. "The work you're doing on the Lu project is not the work of someone who's been quiet for three years."
"I was quiet, not inactive."
"There's a difference."
"Yes."
Tang Xin drank her coffee. Outside, the market crowd moved in its unhurried way, the Saturday logic of it different from the weekday version. A woman walked past with a basket over one arm and a child's hand in the other.
"He wasn't always like this, you know," Tang Xin said. She said it in the same conversational register she had used for the winter melon and the persimmons — as if it were a piece of incidental information, offered neutrally, for no particular reason. "The way he runs projects. The way he manages people." She looked at her cup. "I've been at Lu Corporation for four years. He's changed."
Wanqing did not ask who. She did not need to.
"When did it change?" she said instead. The question was careful — specific enough to invite more, open enough not to demand it.
Tang Xin considered. "Before I was there. I only know from the people who were there earlier." She turned her cup slowly in her hands. "They say he used to be — not warm, exactly. But present. There's a difference between someone who's cold and someone who's absent, even when they're in the room." She set the cup down. "What he is now — it's the second kind."
Wanqing looked at the street.
She did not know what to do with this, so she did what she did with things she did not yet know what to do with: she put it somewhere accessible and moved on.
"The concept territory for phase two," she said. "I want to push the typographic direction further. The primary mark is working but the system around it is still too conservative."
Tang Xin accepted the redirect without comment. This was the thing about her, Wanqing was understanding — she knew when a conversation had arrived at its limit, and she did not push past it. It was a form of respect that felt unusual in its specificity.
They talked about the project for forty minutes, over two cups of coffee, with the ease of people who had been working alongside each other for years rather than two weeks. Wanqing talked about design problems the way she always talked about design problems — directly, without hedging, thinking out loud in a way she generally reserved for her own internal monologue. Tang Xin listened and pushed back and contributed and pushed back again, and somewhere in the middle of a discussion about the system architecture of the secondary visual language, Wanqing registered, with the slight surprise of someone noticing something they had not expected: she was comfortable.
Not comfortable in the way of being relaxed — she was not particularly relaxed, she was talking about typography with the focused energy she brought to all design conversation. Comfortable in the way of being in the right place. The specific ease of a conversation that was calibrated correctly — where the other person's intelligence matched the level you were thinking at and you did not have to simplify.
She had not had many conversations like this in three years.
She had not had many conversations like this before three years, either. Mostly she had had the kind of conversations where she was the one calibrating down.
---
On the walk back through the market, Tang Xin stopped to buy more vegetables than two people needed and distributed the excess to the stallholder on the left, who had apparently been receiving this distribution for some time and accepted it without comment.
"My neighbour," Tang Xin said, by way of explanation that did not quite explain it. "She's old and she doesn't like the market."
Wanqing watched this transaction and thought about roots and what it took to put them down somewhere. The decision to stay in a place, not temporarily, not provisionally, but in the way that involved knowing the names of the people who sold you vegetables and which season the persimmons were best and where the coffee was good enough that you went back every week.
She had not made that decision about anywhere in three years.
She was not sure she had the capacity for it yet. She was not sure she had the right to it.
On the forty-second floor, at approximately the same hour, Zhou Cheng placed a single sheet of paper on Lu Jingheng's desk.
It was not a project document. It had no header. It was a printed list — three items, each one a brief observation in Zhou Cheng's precise handwriting: the market district, the name of the coffee place, the approximate duration of the outing.
Lu Jingheng looked at the sheet for a moment without picking it up.
"I didn't ask for this," he said.
"No," Zhou Cheng agreed. He stood at the appropriate distance, hands at his sides, with the specific stillness of someone who had made a decision and was standing behind it. "But I thought you should know she's well."
A silence.
"She's adapting," Zhou Cheng continued, in the same even tone. "The team respects her work. Miss Tang in particular." He paused. "She went to the market. She bought a persimmon."
Lu Jingheng looked at the window. The city below was doing its Saturday morning thing — slower, the traffic patterns different from a weekday.
"You've been watching her," he said. It was not an accusation. It was closer to an observation about his own assistant that he was still in the process of forming.
"I've been aware of her," Zhou Cheng said. "There's a difference."
Lu Jingheng did not reply. He turned back to the documents on his desk — a draft board summary that had nothing urgent about it and that he had been not-quite-reading for the past half hour.
Zhou Cheng picked up the sheet and left the room.
He had worked for Lu Jingheng for seven years. He had, in that time, developed a specific and accurate understanding of what his employer needed and what his employer would never ask for. These were not always the same category. Managing the gap between them was the most significant portion of his actual job, and he was very good at it.
He returned to his own desk and opened the project folder.
Miss Su had uploaded nothing over the weekend. She was following the no-work-on-Saturdays discipline that her file had suggested she maintained. This was a good sign.
He made a note and closed the folder.
"Tang Xin," she said.
"Mm."
"Before — did you know him? Before he was like this."
Tang Xin was quiet for two steps. "Not well. I was junior then. You don't know people like him directly, you know them by reputation and proximity." She adjusted the bag on her shoulder. "Why?"
Wanqing thought about how to answer this. Then: "Did you know him before?"
Tang Xin looked at her. Not with surprise — with the specific attention of someone arriving at a correct conclusion. It lasted long enough to confirm the conclusion and short enough not to require a response to it.
"It's not relevant to the work," Wanqing said.
"Okay," Tang Xin said.
One word. No inflection that demanded more. The period at the end of a sentence that could have kept going but chose not to.
They walked the rest of the way to the corner where they would separate in a comfortable silence that was the silence of two people who had just covered significant ground and were not in a hurry to cover more.
---
She spent the afternoon at her sketchbook.
Not for the project — for nothing in particular. She had picked up the habit again eight months ago, slowly, in the way she had picked up most things again: tentatively at first, then with increasing commitment as the practice proved itself sustainable. It had been one of the things she had stopped entirely in the worst years, not because it was painful but because it required a quality of attention she had not had — the specific kind of attention that did not go anywhere, that just stayed with the line on the page.
She could do it now. That was still worth noticing.
The forms she drew were simple — geometric, exploratory, the kind of mark-making that was thinking rather than producing. No goal. No deliverable. Just the relationship between the pen and the page and whatever her hand decided to do.
She drew for an hour.
Somewhere in the middle of it, Tang Xin's sentence came back to her. *He wasn't always like this.* She turned it over in her mind without analysis — not trying to extract information from it, just aware of it the way you were aware of a sound in another room. Something had changed in him. Something had made the present version of him different from the version that people who had known him earlier remembered. She did not know what the something was. She did not know when it had happened.
She thought about six years ago and immediately put the thought somewhere else.
She kept drawing.
---
The email from Zhou Cheng arrived at seven forty-three.
She read it at the kitchen table over dinner — a habit she was trying to break, the eating-while-working habit, but she had left her phone on the table and picking it up to check had become reflex.
The email was the week's schedule. Standard format, four entries, each with a location and a brief descriptor. The third entry read: *Tuesday, 14:00 — Strategic alignment review, executive floor. Lead creative required.*
She read the descriptor twice. *Strategic alignment* was a category broad enough to contain almost anything, which meant it could be project-related and legitimately require her presence, or it could be the Wednesday meeting again — something with technical justification but no practical reason for her to be there. She had no way to distinguish from the calendar entry.
She typed back: *Confirmed.* Sent it before she could decide whether to ask for clarification.
Then she sat for a moment with the phone in her hand.
She had been aware of Zhou Cheng for three weeks — as the conduit between the forty-second floor and the twenty-sixth, as the mechanism through which all formal project communication moved. She wondered, not for the first time, what he documented when she was not in the room.
She wondered, for the first time, whether the things he did not say were connected to the things she did not know.
She put the phone face-down on the table and finished her dinner.
Outside the window the city was doing its Saturday evening version of itself — louder, warmer, more lit. Somewhere in it, presumably, people who were not thinking about work. She was going to become one of those people. It was on her list of things to work toward.
She washed her plate.
She went to bed at a reasonable hour.
She did not dream about anything she would later remember.
