CHAPTER 6 — THE RULES HE MADE FOR HER
The feedback arrived on Monday morning via Zhou Cheng.
Not directly — Zhou Cheng forwarded it as an email attachment with the subject line *Rationale Review — Action Items*, the format neutral and professional and entirely consistent with how project correspondence moved in a company of this size. Five numbered points. Clear, specific, each one identifying a particular element of Wanqing's rationale document that required either clarification or revision.
She read through them at her workstation with the focused attention she gave to all feedback, which was: complete attention on the first read, no defensive reaction until the second read, no action until the third.
First read: five points.
Second read: four of the five were reasonable. Standard questions for a positioning document at this stage of development — the kind of thing she would have raised herself in a peer review, the kind of thing that, when answered, would make the rationale more complete. She had no objection to any of them.
The fifth point: she was to attend a financial review meeting on Wednesday at ten, convened by the executive team and the finance division, to present the "strategic design rationale" as context for the rebranding ROI projections.
She read that one twice.
Third read: she pulled up the project schedule and cross-referenced the Wednesday slot against her own deliverable timeline. The first concept territory draft was due Friday. Wednesday at ten was four hours of her Thursday buffer, factoring preparation time. The meeting was not in the original project scope. The strategic design rationale — the rationale she had already provided, in full, in the document currently being reviewed — was a creative document, not a financial one, and its relevance to ROI projections was indirect at best.
She sat with this for a moment.
Then she opened her email and wrote to Zhou Cheng: *Regarding the Wednesday meeting — could you clarify the expected scope of my participation? I want to prepare appropriately.*
The reply came in forty minutes: *Mr. Lu would like the lead creative present. No preparation required beyond familiarity with the existing rationale.*
She added the meeting to her calendar.
---
The Wednesday meeting was in a room on the thirty-eighth floor that she had not been to before — smaller than the main conference rooms, the table set for twelve, the walls lined with the kind of data displays that finance teams lived inside and designers visited occasionally and generally found alienating.
She arrived on time, took the seat Zhou Cheng indicated, and spent the following ninety minutes listening to a detailed discussion of projected return on investment across the rebranding timeline, implementation cost modelling, and market impact projections across the new business sectors.
She was not asked a single question.
This was not an oversight. She could see, from the shape of the agenda and the way the room operated, that the meeting had a clear purpose and a clear group of relevant participants, and that she was not among them in any functional sense. She was present. That was different from participating.
Lu Jingheng ran the meeting from the head of the table with the same quality of focused efficiency she had observed before — moving through the agenda, asking the right questions of the right people, redirecting when the discussion drifted from the point. He did not look at her. Not conspicuously, not pointedly. Simply — not at her.
She took notes anyway. Not because the notes were useful — they were not, this was not her domain and the figures being discussed were not her concern — but because sitting in a meeting without doing anything felt professionally incorrect, and because the notes gave her hands something to do, and because she was not going to sit in this room and look like someone who did not know why she was there.
She left at eleven thirty-two with four pages of notes she would never reference and a Friday deadline that was now tighter than it had been that morning.
She went back to her desk and worked through lunch.
---
The pattern, once she had data for it, was not difficult to identify.
This was the thing about patterns — they required a minimum number of observations before they became legible, and once they were legible they tended to become obvious, the way something you had been looking at without seeing suddenly resolved into its actual shape and you could not imagine how you had missed it.
By Thursday of the second week, she had the following data:
She had not been looking for it consciously. The recognition had come the way pattern recognition usually came to her — peripheral, unhurried, the way a visual inconsistency in a layout surfaced before you could name it. She had been cross-referencing deliverable timelines in the shared project folder and had noticed the comment threads accumulating differently across team members, and once she had noticed it she could not un-notice it.
Tang Xin had not said anything directly. But on Wednesday afternoon, when Wanqing had been working through the latest round of revisions, Tang Xin had set down two printed feedback summaries on the edge of her desk — her own and Wanqing's — and looked at them side by side with the expression of someone presenting evidence without commentary.
Wanqing had looked. The differential was not subtle. Tang Xin had picked up both sheets and returned to her workstation and neither of them had mentioned it.
That was the point at which the data became a pattern.
Her feedback cycles were shorter than the rest of the team's. Where Tang Xin and the digital leads received notes within forty-eight hours of submission, Wanqing's came within twelve. They were more detailed. They asked more follow-up questions. They required more revision rounds — not because her work was weaker, which she knew objectively it was not, but because the bar being applied to it was set higher and the bar kept moving.
The scope of what she was asked to attend had expanded. Two more meetings that were not in her project scope, both called on short notice, both in which her presence was technically justifiable but practically unnecessary.
And on Thursday afternoon, without advance notice, Lu Jingheng appeared on the twenty-sixth floor.
She heard him before she saw him — the recalibration of the room she had learned to recognise, the slight shift in the collective attention of the people around her. She looked up from her workstation and he was crossing the floor toward the project cluster, Zhou Cheng a measured half-step behind him, and his direction of travel made it clear he was coming specifically to where she and Tang Xin were sitting.
Tang Xin caught her eye. A brief look — not alarmed, just noting.
"Miss Su. Miss Tang." He stopped at a neutral distance from their workstations — the professional distance, the correct one. "I want to review the concept territory draft."
"It's not due until Friday," Tang Xin said. Not a challenge. A fact.
"I'm aware." He looked at the workstations — the screens, the printed references, the physical layout of their thinking process that designers inevitably externalised onto every available surface. "I want to see where it is now."
---
The review lasted fifty-five minutes.
He pulled up her draft on the shared screen and went through it the way she had come to understand was his method — not section by section, but following the logic of the argument, identifying where it held and where it didn't, asking questions that required her to either defend a decision or acknowledge it needed work.
She did both. She had gotten efficient at both.
"The mark studies are too restrained," he said at one point, looking at the visual explorations she had pinned to the digital board. "You've identified the territory correctly. The executions are hedging again."
She looked at the studies. He was right — she could see it immediately, the same quality she had caught in the original framework, the same impulse to stay in the safe middle of a direction rather than committing to its edge. She had not caught it herself this time.
"I'll push them further before Friday," she said.
"Push them to the point where they could be wrong," he said. "That's where the interesting ones are."
She wrote it down.
Tang Xin, sitting slightly to the side, was very carefully not reacting to anything.
He left two questions open rather than resolving them — the kind of thing you did when you wanted someone to sit with the problem rather than take your answer — and then he stood, told Zhou Cheng something quiet that she did not catch, and walked back toward the lifts.
The floor resettled.
Tang Xin waited until the lift doors had closed before she spoke.
"He's never come down for a mid-week review," she said. "Not for any project I've been on."
"Is that unusual for a project this size?"
"It's unusual for any project size." Tang Xin looked at her screens and then at Wanqing's, and then at Wanqing. "This is a very specific kind of attention."
"He has high standards for the project."
"He has high standards for you," Tang Xin said, with the precision of someone who had chosen their words carefully and meant exactly what they said. "Those aren't the same thing either."
Wanqing did not answer.
She turned back to her mark studies and began to push them toward the edge of the direction, past the safe middle, into the territory where they could be wrong.
She worked for another hour after that, and the floor gradually returned to its ordinary rhythm around her — the sounds of people finishing their day, conversations picked up and set down, the coffee machine completing another cycle.
At some point Tang Xin brought her a coffee without asking. Set it at the edge of her desk and went back to her own work without comment. Wanqing drank it.
What she did not do was let herself think about what Tang Xin had said. *A very specific kind of attention.* She had put those words in the same category as the unanswered questions — present, filed, not yet a room she was ready to enter. The work was the useful thing. The work had edges and parameters and clear criteria for success, and she was going to do the work and not make anything of the attention until she had more information.
She pushed the mark studies toward the edge of the direction.
Two of the three resolved almost immediately — the direction was right, she had just been afraid of it. The third took longer, required her to make a choice she had been deferring, and then once she made the choice it became the strongest of the three.
She sat back and looked at what she had.
*This is the one,* she thought, using Tang Xin's words before she had sent them. Then she kept working.
---
That evening, alone at her workstation with the floor empty around her, she did the thing she did when she needed to understand something: she wrote it down.
Not for anyone to read. Not to process it emotionally — she had other tools for that, tools she had built carefully over three years and trusted. This was a different exercise. This was the design-brain version of understanding: taking the available evidence and mapping its structure.
She wrote: *Pattern observed over two weeks.*
She listed it. The feedback frequency, the scope expansion, the meetings outside her lane, the review that afternoon. She wrote it as data, without editorialising — just the observations, the timeline, the differential between how she was being handled and how the rest of the team was being handled.
Then she wrote: *Why?*
The most straightforward explanation: he was dissatisfied with her performance and was managing her toward improvement or exit through the application of sustained pressure. She considered this. Then she discarded it — the feedback was rigorous but not incorrect, the standards were high but not unachievable, and the work she was producing in response was demonstrably getting better. If his goal was to manage her out, he was doing it by making her better at her job, which was a contradiction.
The second explanation: he was dissatisfied with her presence specifically and was applying pressure designed to make the environment uncomfortable enough that she would choose to leave. This was a less pleasant reading but not an impossible one.
She wrote it down. Then below it she wrote: *Why would he want me to leave?*
Because she was an inconvenience. Because her presence in this building, in this project, in his professional orbit, was a complication he had not chosen — she had been hired through a standard process, or a process he had set in motion for reasons that made sense at the time, and now she was here and the reality of that was harder to manage than the decision had seemed.
She looked at that sentence for a moment.
It was a reasonable hypothesis. It explained the data. It had a logical structure and a coherent motivation.
She wrote below it: *Why would he care enough to want me gone?*
That was the question she did not have an answer for.
She stared at it for long enough that the screen dimmed. She did not unlock it.
She packed up her things, turned off the workstation, and went home.
---
She called Tang Xin from the bus.
"The concept territory," she said, without preamble. "The mark studies — I'm going to redo the three in the middle register. They're too safe."
"That's what he said."
"That's what I can see now." She looked out the bus window at the city moving past. "The outer explorations are right. The middle ones are trying to reconcile things that don't reconcile. I should have caught it before the review."
"You would have caught it before Friday."
"I would have caught it later than I should have." She shifted her bag on her shoulder. "I'm going to work on them tonight."
A pause. "Wanqing."
"Mm."
"You know you're allowed to push back on the scope creep. The Wednesday meeting, the prep time. You're the lead creative — you have standing to raise it."
She was quiet for a moment.
"I know," she said.
"But?"
She watched the city. The bus moved through an intersection, through a pool of streetlight, back into the intervals of dark between.
"But I'd rather spend the energy on the work," she said.
Tang Xin was quiet on the other end. The specific quiet of someone who understood that this was the answer and also that the answer was not only about work.
"The mark studies," Tang Xin said finally. "Send me what you have when you've pushed them. Second opinion before you submit."
"Yes," Wanqing said. "Thank you."
She put the phone away and looked at the city for the rest of the bus ride.
---
She submitted the concept territory on Friday at four seventeen.
The work was better than it had been on Thursday. Not by a small amount — by the specific margin that came from pushing something past the point of safety into the territory where it could fail and finding that it didn't fail, that it held, that the direction was strong enough to carry the commitment. Tang Xin had sent back two notes and one sentence: *This is the one.*
Wanqing added a single comment to the submission file before she uploaded it. She had written it and deleted it twice and written it a third time and left it:
*Revised per Thursday feedback. The direction is committed.*
She used the word deliberately. He had used it first — in the kick-off meeting, when he had said the brief needed a direction and not a compromise. She was confirming it back to him in the only language available to them: the language of work.
She hit upload and closed her laptop.
Two hours later, she was making tea in her kitchen when her phone buzzed with the project folder notification. She picked it up.
A new comment on the concept territory file, timestamped six forty-three. Two words:
*Approved for next phase.*
She stood in her kitchen and looked at those two words for a moment that lasted longer than it should have. Not because they were sentimental — they were not, they were the most neutral possible professional response, they communicated exactly what they were required to communicate and nothing else. But because she had sent the work and it had come back approved, and in the specific register of these two weeks, that meant something about the nature of the bar she was being held to.
He was not trying to fail her.
She had known this already, had known it from the quality of the feedback, which was the feedback of someone who wanted the work to be good and not the feedback of someone who wanted the work to fail. But knowing it abstractly and seeing it confirmed in two words at six forty-three on a Friday evening were different experiences, and she sat with the difference for a moment before putting her phone down and finishing her tea.
The question she had written and not answered was still unanswered.
She was getting better at sitting with unanswered questions. Three years of rebuilding had required it. She had learned to treat them less like problems to solve and more like rooms she was not yet ready to enter — present, acknowledged, not urgent.
She put her phone face-down on the counter.
Tomorrow was Saturday. She did not work on Saturdays. She was going to go to the market in the morning and see a film in the afternoon and call her father in the evening and not think about brand positioning or rationale documents or the specific quality of attention from a man on the forty-second floor who approved her work and made the rules harder and whose motivations she could not read clearly enough to know what to do with.
The tea was good.
She drank it.
