CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN AT THE TOP OF THE WORLD
The lift to the forty-second floor moved without sound.
Su Wanqing stood with her back to the mirrored wall and her portfolio bag on the floor beside her right foot and her eyes on the floor counter above the doors. Twenty-six. Twenty-seven. Twenty-eight. She had the brief memorised: three to four positioning territories, visual language samples, rationale. She had the questions she intended to ask arranged in order of priority. She had the particular blankness on her face that she wore to meetings where she needed to be taken seriously before she opened her mouth.
She was prepared.
She was very good at prepared.
What she was less good at — what she had never, in three years of careful reconstruction, managed to become reliably good at — was the things that did not appear on any agenda.
Thirty-five. Thirty-six.
She thought about the amber in the brand palette. The specific quality of it — not warm, not cold, that particular middle frequency that she associated with late afternoons and the smell of newsprint and a room she had not been inside in six years. She had looked it up the previous evening after getting home, sitting cross-legged on her bed with her laptop open, searching through old project archives with the systematic approach she applied to anything she could not immediately explain.
She had not found a match. She had closed the laptop and told herself it was irrelevant.
Forty. Forty-one.
The lift stopped. The doors opened onto a corridor that was different in register from the floors below — quieter, the carpet deeper, the light a degree or two warmer. A receptionist at a curved desk smiled at her with the professional warmth of someone trained to make visitors feel both welcome and aware that they were visitors.
"Miss Su? Mr. Zhou is expecting you. Room forty-two B — I'll show you through."
---
Room forty-two B had floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides.
The city spread out below them in every direction, reduced by distance to something abstract and geometrical — a pattern of glass and steel and shadow that looked, from up here, less like a place where people lived and more like a very large piece of graphic design. Wanqing clocked this in the first three seconds and then stopped looking at it, because looking at things that were beautiful when she was trying to be professional was a habit she had mostly trained out of herself.
Zhou Cheng was already in the room, standing beside a long table with a coffee service and two printed agendas and the composed readiness of a man who was never not prepared. He nodded when she entered.
"Miss Su. Please, sit wherever you're comfortable."
She chose the chair two seats from the head of the table — not the obvious deference of the far end, not the presumption of the nearest. A working position. She set her bag down, opened her laptop, and pulled up the brief on the secondary monitor she had queued the night before.
The room was quiet.
Outside, the city moved in its silent, reduced way.
She was in the middle of adjusting the angle of her screen when the door behind her opened.
She heard it rather than saw it — the soft mechanism of the handle, the small change in air pressure that a door opening creates. She registered it the way she registered all entrances: as information, not interruption. She would turn in a moment, once she had finished the adjustment, once she had her face arranged for whoever it was.
She turned.
---
And the world did something it had no right to do.
It contracted.
Not dramatically. Not the way it happened in stories, where the room goes silent and the air changes quality and everyone present feels the significance. It was smaller than that and worse than that — a single, precise point of compression, like a needle finding the exact spot between two ribs.
Lu Jingheng stood in the doorway.
He was not what memory had made him. Memory, Wanqing had learned over six years of careful management, was an unreliable archivist — it softened what it wanted to soften and sharpened what it wanted to sharpen, and it rarely left things exactly as they had been. She had spent three years not thinking about him and another three years thinking about him only in the clinical, archived way that her therapist called "processing" and that she privately called "defusing" — the way you handled old ordnance, carefully, from a distance, until it could no longer detonate.
None of that work had prepared her for the specific reality of him standing twelve feet away.
He was thirty-three now. She could see the years in the set of his shoulders, in the particular quality of his stillness — the stillness of someone who had learned that rooms arranged themselves around him and had stopped spending energy on it. He was wearing a dark suit with the ease of someone who did not think about what he wore. His face was —
His face.
For one half-second — she counted it precisely, the way she counted everything — something moved in his eyes.
Not surprise. She had been prepared for surprise, had rehearsed her own response to it on the lift up, had planned her face and her words and the exact degree of professional distance she would maintain. Surprise she could have handled.
This was not surprise.
It was closer to the expression of a person looking at a wound they had inflicted and finding it exactly as bad as they had known it would be. A form of recognition that was also a form of accounting. It lasted for half a second, less, and then it was gone — locked away behind something so smooth and impenetrable that if she had not been watching at exactly the right moment she would have missed it entirely.
Then he crossed the room and sat at the head of the table and opened the agenda folder Zhou Cheng had placed there, and he was simply the CEO of a major corporation conducting a project briefing. No more, no less.
Wanqing did not stand immediately.
She gave herself one second. One deliberate, counted second in which she looked at the surface of the table in front of her and did the breathing thing and reminded herself of several important facts: she needed this job, she was good at this job, she had survived worse than sitting across a conference table from someone who had once been the most important person in her life and was now — was now a professional contact, nothing more, and she was going to conduct herself accordingly.
She stood up.
"Good morning," she said. Her voice came out level. Good.
He looked up from the folder. "Miss Su." He gestured to the chair she had already been sitting in. "Please."
As if she had just arrived. As if she had not been in the room for four minutes before him. As if the name he had just used — not her given name, not anything familiar, just the formal address of a professional speaking to a subordinate — was not the deliberate erasure of everything that name had once been allowed to mean.
She sat down.
---
He briefed well. She had not expected that — or rather, she had not let herself think about what to expect, because thinking about what to expect had required thinking about him, which she had been managing not to do for six years. But he briefed well: clear, specific, no performance, the language of a person who understood what they wanted and had thought carefully about how to describe it.
"The current identity has served the Group well for twenty years," he said, without looking up from the folder. "It won't serve the next twenty. The sectors we're expanding into — design, technology, creative industries — require a different register. Not younger. More precise." He paused. "The existing mark reads as inherited. I want something that reads as chosen."
Across the table, Zhou Cheng made a small notation in his folder.
Wanqing wrote down chosen and underlined it twice.
"The brief mentions a departure from the current palette," she said. "Is the amber accent point being retained?"
A small silence. Not long — a second, perhaps slightly less.
"No," Lu Jingheng said. "The amber is being retired."
She nodded and made another note. The note said: amber out. Her handwriting was very neat. She had the kind of handwriting that came from years of laying out type by hand, from understanding that letters were shapes before they were sounds.
She did not look at him while she wrote.
"What's the timeline for the first concept review?"
"End of week two. I want territories, not executions — thinking, not product." He turned a page. "Zhou Cheng has outlined the parameters. The competitive analysis you'll receive by Thursday covers the new sectors specifically. I've annotated it."
"You annotated the competitive analysis."
It was not quite a question. He looked up at that — the first time he had looked directly at her since sitting down.
"Is that a problem?"
"No," she said. "It's useful context." She met his eyes for exactly as long as it took to make the point, then looked back at her notes. "Most executives summarise. Annotations are more honest about what they actually noticed."
A beat.
Zhou Cheng's pen moved in his folder. Whatever he was writing, he wrote it with the careful neutrality of a man who was not present for certain kinds of conversation.
Lu Jingheng said nothing. He turned another page.
The first ten minutes were the worst, and then they were not the worst anymore because she had moved past them.
This was something she had learned about difficult things: they had a threshold. Before the threshold they were anticipation, which was its own specific misery. After the threshold they became the thing itself, which was usually more manageable than the anticipation, because the thing itself had edges and parameters and could be navigated. The anticipation was formless. The thing itself was just a problem.
She navigated.
She asked about the new business verticals, about the target stakeholder profile for the repositioning, about the relationship between the group's visual identity and its subsidiary brands. He answered. His answers were direct and complete and did not require follow-up questions, which meant he had thought about these questions before she asked them, which meant he was serious about the project in the way Zhou Cheng had described — not as a quarterly metric but as something that mattered to him for reasons she could not entirely account for from the brief alone.
The quality of his attention, she noted, had not changed.
When he focused on something — a question, a problem, a point of contention — he focused with the entire weight of his attention, without splitting it, without performing engagement. It was something she had once found extraordinary about him, in the years when she had found things about him. It was the same now. Unchanged. She filed it under irrelevant and moved on.
"The current mark has strong recognition in the finance sector," she said, midway through the discussion of competitive positioning. "If you're pivoting toward creative industries, there's a risk that recognition becomes a liability. The existing associations may not transfer."
He looked at her. "Go on."
"Finance and creativity aren't mutually exclusive, but they signal differently to their respective audiences. Finance signals safety, continuity, institutional trust. Creativity signals risk, originality, the willingness to be unpredictable." She paused. "You can't carry the same identity into both spaces without one register undermining the other. You have to choose which audience you're primarily speaking to, or you build a system that manages both — which is more complex and more expensive to execute consistently."
A silence. Longer than the previous ones.
"That's the core problem," he said. "That's what the brief doesn't say clearly enough."
"I noticed."
Something shifted in his expression — not warmth, not softness, but a fractional change in the set of it. Like a door that had been closed that was not, quite, any more closed than before, but that had adjusted slightly on its hinge.
"Your proposal for the first concept review should address that directly," he said. "Don't soften it for the room."
"I don't soften things for rooms."
He looked at her for a moment. Then he looked back at his folder.
"No," he said, very quietly. "I know."
They continued.
---
Forty minutes. It was forty minutes of the most professionally managed conversation Wanqing had conducted in recent memory, and she was aware, with the detached precision of someone watching herself from a slight distance, that she was doing it well. The questions she asked were the right questions. The observations she offered were correct and specific and demonstrated that she had read the brief thoroughly and thought carefully about the problem.
She knew this because she could see it in the quality of his attention when she spoke. Not warmth — warmth was not a register he seemed to use, at least not here, not in this room — but a particular sharpening, the way a person's focus changes when they hear something worth considering. He responded to her points directly. He pushed back twice, both times with the brevity of someone who had limited patience for preamble.
She pushed back once, on a question of visual hierarchy in the existing identity system, and laid out her reasoning in three sentences.
He was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "Note that. We'll come back to it."
Zhou Cheng noted it.
She did not allow herself to feel anything about this.
Near the end of the briefing, Lu Jingheng set down his pen and looked out the window at the city below. It was a brief gesture — the gesture of a person taking a half-second of distance from the room — and then he looked back at his folder and said: "The identity needs to communicate permanence. Not the permanence of something that has always existed. The permanence of something that intends to remain."
Wanqing's pen stopped moving.
She had heard that sentence before. Not those exact words — the words were different, the context was different, the person he had been when he said something like that had been different. But the structure of the thought, the particular way of distinguishing between inherited permanence and chosen permanence, the idea that the most durable things were the ones that had decided to stay —
She wrote it down. Her handwriting was still neat.
She did not let her face do anything with it.
---
The meeting ended at nine forty-seven.
Lu Jingheng stood, which was the signal that it was over, and gathered his folder with the efficient finality of a man with four more meetings before noon. Zhou Cheng was already moving toward the door. Wanqing closed her laptop, picked up her bag, and followed.
She was three steps from the door when she heard him speak behind her.
"Miss Su."
She stopped. She did not turn around immediately — she gave herself the half-second that the situation allowed, not more.
Then she turned.
He was standing at the head of the table, folder in hand, eyes on her with the same level quality they had maintained for the past forty minutes. No more warmth than before. No less.
"Welcome to the team," he said.
Three words. The correct three words for the end of a first meeting with a new hire. Professional, sufficient, irreproachable.
She held his gaze for exactly as long as professionalism required.
"Thank you," she said.
She walked out.
---
The lift back to twenty-six moved without sound, the same as it had on the way up.
Wanqing stood with her back to the mirrored wall and her portfolio bag at her feet and looked at the floor counter descending above the doors. Forty-two. Forty-one. Forty.
Her phone buzzed. She picked it up.
*Tang Xin: well? how was the mysterious executive briefing*
She looked at the message for a moment. Then she typed:
*Fine. Come find me. I need coffee.*
She sent it, put the phone away, and looked at the spot on the wall directly in front of her.
This was something she had learned in the early bad years, before she had the language for it, before the therapist and the medication adjustments and the careful daily architecture of a life rebuilt from scratch: you were allowed to feel things in the ten seconds before you had to be functional again. The feeling did not stop existing because you did not perform it. It was better, sometimes, to give it a few seconds and then close it and carry on.
She counted to ten.
The number she was feeling was not grief, exactly. She had done her grief. She was relatively certain about that — she had done it thoroughly and expensively and it had taken a long time and she was not interested in doing it again.
What she was feeling was something smaller and more structural. The way your body registered old damage when the weather changed. Not pain, exactly. Just the memory of where the break had been.
Thirty-two. Thirty-one.
He had not flinched. He had not acknowledged it, not with his words, not with his face, not with a single altered breath across that table. He had looked at her and greeted her and briefed her on a design project with the professional equanimity of a man who had never in his life made her a promise.
She supposed she had known he was capable of that.
She supposed she had simply, in some part of herself she had not fully managed, hoped that six years might have made him slightly less good at it.
Twenty-six.
The doors opened.
Tang Xin was already at the entrance to the creative floor, leaning against the wall with two coffee cups and the expression of someone who had decided not to ask questions yet but was reserving the right.
Wanqing walked toward her and took the coffee.
"How was it?" Tang Xin said.
"Informative," Wanqing said. "The CEO annotates his competitive analyses personally. It was useful."
Tang Xin studied her for a moment with the particular attention of someone who was very good at reading rooms and people both.
"Okay," she said.
"Okay," Wanqing agreed.
They walked back to the floor together. The morning was starting. There was work to be done. The work was interesting and it was real and it was the kind of problem she was genuinely good at solving, and she was going to put her things down at her workstation and open the brief and begin.
That was what she was going to do.
She sat down, opened her laptop, and looked at the first line of the positioning brief.
The identity needs to communicate permanence. Not the permanence of something that has always existed. The permanence of something that intends to remain.
She had typed it up from her notes that morning, before the meeting, before the lift, before the world had done its small, precise, unauthorised contraction.
She read the line again.
Then she opened a new document and began.
You've reached the end of this chapter
CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN AT THE TOP OF THE WORLD
