CHAPTER 3 — WHY SHE STAYED
The brief did not read any differently the second time.
Su Wanqing had known it would not. She was not reading it for new information — she was reading it because she needed something to do with her eyes, and her hands, and the particular quality of her attention that had nowhere else to go right now. The positioning framework, the competitive landscape summary, the annotated visual audit she had started before the meeting: these were the correct objects to be looking at. She looked at them.
Tang Xin had asked her question and received her answer and gone back to her own work with the tact of a person who understood that some things were not for right now. The floor had its mid-morning rhythm — keyboards, the occasional low voice, the coffee machine completing its cycle with a sound like a small mechanical sigh.
Wanqing arranged the brief documents into three columns on her secondary monitor and opened a new positioning framework template on the primary.
She was fine.
She was, in fact, doing exactly what she was supposed to be doing, which was working, which was the thing she had come here to do, which was the thing that mattered. The meeting was over. It had been a professional interaction. She had conducted herself adequately. The work was interesting and real and she was going to do it well.
She typed a heading: Strategic Territory 01.
She looked at it.
She deleted it and typed it again, because the kerning on the template font was slightly off and it was bothering her, and adjusting small things that could be adjusted was a functional way to manage the ones that could not.
---
At ten forty-seven, an email arrived from Zhou Cheng.
The subject line read: Rebranding Project — Team Introduction and Role Confirmation.
Wanqing read it once, then read it again.
The email was addressed to the full project team — seven names, across brand strategy, visual systems, copywriting, and digital experience. It introduced Wanqing as the new senior designer and, in the second paragraph, confirmed her role as lead creative on the project with a direct reporting line to the executive level for all major design decisions.
She had known this from Zhou Cheng's briefing the previous day. She had agreed to it, understood its implications, factored it into her assessment of the position.
What she had not done — what she had, in the focused efficiency of getting through yesterday, not paused to do — was think carefully about what it meant that Lu Jingheng had looked at a shortlist of candidates and selected her name.
She sat with that for a moment.
Lu Corporation was a forty-two-floor building with eight hundred employees and a rebranding project significant enough that the CEO was personally overseeing it. The lead creative position on that project would not have gone unfilled. There were other names on that shortlist — designers with equivalent or stronger portfolios, designers with longer track records, designers without the particular complication of having once been a different kind of important to the man making the decision.
He had chosen her anyway.
She did not know what to do with that.
The three most plausible explanations arranged themselves in her mind with the orderly efficiency of long practice: one, he had not known it was her until she walked into the room — possible, given that her portfolio used her professional name and her personnel file was handled by HR, not by him directly. Two, he had known and chosen her regardless, as a pure professional decision, because her work was the best on the shortlist and he was the kind of person who made pure professional decisions. Three, he had known and chosen her for a reason she could not identify from the information currently available.
She made a note. Not about any of this — about a visual reference for Strategic Territory 01. She had learned a long time ago that the best container for unanswerable questions was more work.
---
Tang Xin came by her workstation at eleven.
Not with the approach of someone delivering information — with the approach of someone who had decided something and was implementing it. She rolled her chair across the gap between their workstations, stopping at the edge of Wanqing's desk, and said, without preamble:
"He personally picked you for this, didn't he?"
It was not quite a question.
"According to Zhou Cheng, yes," Wanqing said.
Tang Xin was quiet for a moment. She had, Wanqing had noted across their short acquaintance, a specific quality of silence that was different from the absence of words — it was the silence of someone processing, cross-referencing, arriving at a conclusion they were deciding whether to share.
"He doesn't involve himself in hires at this level," Tang Xin said. "Not usually. He sets parameters and lets division heads work within them." She paused. "The rebranding is different. Everyone knows it's different. But even so."
Wanqing waited.
"I'm not saying anything specific," Tang Xin continued, with the precision of someone choosing their words with real care. "I'm just saying — this floor is the floor. What happens on forty-two is a different country. The rules aren't always the same." She met Wanqing's eyes with the directness of someone who had decided on honesty. "Just be careful up there."
Wanqing looked at her for a moment.
"I know how to be careful," she said.
Tang Xin nodded once — not the nod of someone satisfied, but the nod of someone who had said what they needed to say and was leaving the rest to the other person. She rolled her chair back to her own workstation.
Wanqing returned to the positioning framework.
She knew how to be careful. She had spent three years becoming extremely good at careful — at reading rooms, at managing distance, at the particular discipline of not letting things in that she had not chosen to let in. Careful was not the problem.
The problem was that careful required knowing what you were being careful of, and she was not entirely sure, yet, what that was.
---
The afternoon arranged itself into work.
This was the thing she had always relied on, even in the worst of the bad years — not that work made things better, exactly, but that it was a domain with edges. A brief had parameters. A design problem had constraints. You could be rigorous inside a set of constraints in a way that you could not be rigorous about your own life, which had no edges and no parameters and no clear criteria for success.
She built the competitive analysis framework. She mapped the new business verticals against the existing brand associations and identified four points of structural tension. She drafted a preliminary positioning question — not an answer, just the question, sharpened down to its irreducible form — and sent it to the shared project folder with the brief annotation: *For team review. Starting point, not conclusion.*
At half past three she went to the kitchen to refill her water glass and overheard, without intending to, a conversation between two members of the digital team at the counter.
"— he doesn't remember people," one of them was saying. "He remembers results. Doesn't matter who you are or how long you've been here, what matters is whether the work moved the needle."
"That's not entirely true," the other said. "He remembered that Chen Fang preferred written briefs. Three years in."
"That's not remembering a person. That's optimising a workflow."
They moved away. Wanqing filled her glass.
He doesn't remember people. He remembers results.
She walked back to her workstation, set down the glass, and sat for a moment without opening anything.
The sentence had the character of received wisdom — the kind of thing people said about powerful people to explain their behaviour in ways that made it manageable, that turned coldness into a system rather than a choice. She had heard variations of it about difficult bosses before. It was usually partially true and partially a way of not asking harder questions.
What she knew, from six years ago, was that Lu Jingheng had an exceptional memory for things that mattered to him. He remembered which coffee she preferred and the name of the song she had been listening to the first time they met and the exact argument she had made, three weeks into their relationship, about why she thought a particular design convention was philosophically dishonest. He had brought that argument back, unprompted, six months later, having thought about it, with a counter-position.
He remembered things that mattered to him.
The question of whether she still fell into that category was not one she intended to pursue.
She opened the competitive analysis and got back to work.
---
The floor emptied by six-thirty.
Wanqing stayed.
Not because she had unfinished work — she had enough done for a reasonable first full day — but because the alternative was going home, and going home meant being alone with the decision she had been moving around for the past ten hours without directly confronting. She had found, over the years, that there was a difference between avoidance and preparation. Avoidance was when you never came to the thing. Preparation was when you waited until you had the right conditions to do it properly.
She needed the right conditions.
Outside, the city had finished its transition into evening. The floor's automatic lighting had shifted to its lower-register night setting without her noticing — she had been here long enough for it to happen. The cleaning staff would come eventually. She had time before then.
She reached into her bag and took out her phone.
She had not opened her contacts for any particular purpose. She told herself this as she scrolled — it was habit, the idle movement of someone whose hands needed something to do. But her thumb stopped where it always stopped, and the name was still there, the way it had always been there, because she had never developed a good reason to delete it. A deleted contact was a decision. Leaving it was simply not deciding, and not deciding was a thing she was allowed to do.
Lu Jingheng.
No title. No workplace. Just the name, the way it had been stored six years ago, before he was a CEO and she was whatever she was now. Before the amber palette and the forty-second floor and the handwriting in the margin.
She looked at it until the screen went dark, then put the phone away without unlocking it.
By seven, the floor was hers. The city outside the windows had moved into its evening register — the light different, the traffic noise changed in quality, the sky beginning to do something complicated behind the western buildings. She sat with the empty floor and the complicated sky and let the thing she had been not-thinking about come forward.
Six years.
She had not known where he was, mostly. She had not looked — had made it a rule in the early years and then a habit and then simply the correct way to be. She had known, in the abstract, that he would have continued. That the Lu family would have continued, that the business would have continued, that the world he had returned to when he returned to it would have continued being itself, indifferent to the specific damage it had caused on its way.
She had not known he was here.
She had not known she would walk into this building and find six years compressed into a room with floor-to-ceiling windows and a man who called her Miss Su and annotated competitive analyses and said, very quietly, over a project brief: *No. I know.*
The small, precise needle of that. The specific quality of being known by someone who had chosen to unknow you.
She picked up her phone and scrolled through her contacts. The name was still there — she had never deleted it, had told herself the reason was practical but had not examined that claim closely. She looked at it for a long time. The screen dimmed. She did not unlock it.
She put the phone in her bag and shut down her workstation and went home.
---
The draft email had been sitting in her outbox since midnight.
She had not written it immediately — she had made tea first, and changed out of her work clothes, and sat on the floor with her back against the sofa, which was where she sat when she needed to think rather than perform thinking. Then she had gotten up and opened her laptop and typed it. Subject: Resignation — Su Wanqing. One paragraph. Professional, clean, no explanation beyond the standard wording about personal circumstances.
She had not sent it.
She looked at it now, in the kitchen, with her second cup of tea going cold beside her.
She opened a new document and did the thing her therapist had recommended in the first year, when decisions felt impossible and everything seemed equally weighted with consequence: she made the list. Two columns. Leave. Stay.
The Leave column: she would not have to see him every day. She would not have to manage, across months of close collaboration, the specific effort of being professional around someone who had been the gravitational centre of the worst years of her life. She would not have to navigate whatever it was he was doing — the deliberate selection, the careful distance, the impossibly neutral *Welcome to the team* — without any framework for understanding it.
The Stay column: three months of rent, which she had. The following three months, which she did not. The remaining balance of the loan she had taken to cover her parents' debts during the studio closure, which was smaller than it had been but was still there. The project itself, which was genuinely interesting, which was the kind of work she had spent three years rebuilding herself toward being able to do. The first time in longer than she wanted to count that she had sat at a workstation and felt the specific aliveness of a problem worth solving.
She read both columns.
Then she closed the draft email without sending it, closed the document without saving it, and sat for a moment with her cold tea.
She had not stayed because she was weak. She had not stayed because some unprocessed part of her had hoped for something, had leaned toward him in the old way, had chosen proximity over sense. She had stayed because the arithmetic was clear and she trusted the arithmetic more than she trusted the part of herself that wanted to run.
She had run once. She had run at twenty-two when the ground disappeared under her and she had not stopped for two years. She was not twenty-two now. She did not run anymore.
She called her mother at nine-fifteen, which was late enough that her mother would have finished dinner and early enough that she would not have gone to sleep.
Her mother answered on the second ring. "Wanqing. How was the first full day?"
"Good," Wanqing said. "Interesting project. The team seems competent."
"You're not just being polite?"
"I don't do polite for your benefit. You know that."
A small sound on the other end — her mother's version of a laugh, the compressed, private kind that her father always said sounded like a drawing being folded in half. "Your father wants to know if they have good coffee on the creative floor."
"Reasonable Americano on twenty-six, apparently better on twenty-five but requiring extra access cards."
"He'll say that's a deliberate power structure."
"He'd be right."
A beat of comfortable silence. This was what she had missed most, in the worst years — not the grand things, but this: the small, reliable weight of people who had been there before everything happened and were still there after. Her mother did not ask about the things Wanqing did not offer. It was a form of respect that had taken them both years to arrive at.
"Sleep properly," her mother said.
"I will."
"And eat something that isn't tea."
"I had lunch."
"Good." A pause. "We're proud of you, you know. For going back."
Wanqing was quiet for a moment. "I know," she said. "Goodnight, Mum."
She hung up and sat for a while longer on the kitchen floor.
She washed the cup, turned off the kitchen light, and went to her desk.
The project file was open from the afternoon — the competitive analysis, the positioning framework, the shared folder she had added her preliminary notes to. She opened the CEO's annotated brief, meaning to review it before tomorrow.
The annotation was on page four, in the margin beside the positioning summary. Small, precise digital handwriting — the kind produced by someone who used a stylus on a tablet, who had particular standards about the legibility of their own notes. The surrounding text discussed the strategic challenge of the repositioning: the need to signal both continuity and evolution, both permanence and adaptability.
In the margin, beside a paragraph about the gap between the existing identity and the new business direction, he had written:
*This is what the last three teams missed.*
Nothing else. No elaboration. The note of someone thinking aloud on paper — or, more accurately, thinking aloud in a margin that he had not expected anyone else to read.
Wanqing looked at it for a long time.
She had seen the brief for this project. She had read the public-facing version before she applied, and the fuller version Zhou Cheng had given her, and the annotated version in front of her now. This project had been in development for at least eighteen months based on the timeline references. Three separate teams had taken it on and not delivered.
He had read three teams' worth of work on this problem. He had identified, precisely, what each of them had missed. And then he had gone back to the shortlist and chosen her.
She did not know what to do with that.
She saved her notes, closed the laptop, and told herself it was a professional decision, for professional reasons, and she was going to treat it as exactly that.
The telling helped.
It usually did, eventually.
She turned off the desk lamp, and the room went dark, and outside the window the city continued its patient, enormous indifference, and somewhere in it a man she had once known was doing whatever he did at this hour, in whatever room he occupied, and it was nothing to do with her.
She went to bed.
She lay in the dark for a while before sleeping, not thinking about anything in particular.
In the morning, she would go back.
