CHAPTER 29 — MISS SU
Monday arrived with the specific quality that Mondays had when they followed weekends in which something significant had happened: the same streets, the same building, the same commute, but with the internal quality of a person who had been somewhere and come back changed.
Su Wanqing had slept ten hours on Friday night and eight on Saturday and seven on Sunday, which was the most sleep she had accumulated in any three-night period since before the Meridian crisis. Her body had made its requirements known and she had met them, which was something she had learned to do — to treat her body's requirements as information rather than inconvenience, to respond to them the way she responded to any reasonable request from a reliable source.
She felt, arriving at the building on Monday morning, substantially better than she had felt when leaving it on Friday evening.
The building was familiar now in a way that a place became familiar after months — not just known but incorporated, the way a well-used tool became an extension of the hand rather than an object held in it. She knew the light at different times of day, the sounds the building made in the morning versus the afternoon, the specific rhythm of a Monday versus a Friday. This familiarity was, she had found, one of the unexpected gifts of the past months: she had a place she knew.
She took the stairs instead of the lift to the twenty-sixth floor — not because the lift was unavailable, but because she wanted the specific sensation of her own body moving through space before she began the sedentary work of sitting at a desk. This was a habit she had developed in the rebuilding years, when physical sensation had been one of the reliable ways of orienting herself in a present that sometimes felt unstable. She did not need it in the same way anymore. She did it anyway, because it had become part of how she arrived at a workday, and because the twenty-six flights were not onerous and had the additional benefit of meaning she was slightly warmer when she reached her floor and did not immediately require her coat.
She hung her coat. She made coffee. She opened the Meridian files.
The week ahead had a clear shape: three deliverables, one milestone review, two calls with Meridian's extended team. She had been preparing for all of them. The work was in good shape. She felt ready for it.
She worked for two and a half hours.
At ten twenty-seven, a calendar notification appeared on her screen: *Meridian contract milestone review — 10:30 — Room 42B.*
She had been expecting it. She had put it in her calendar herself on Thursday. She saved the file she was working on, closed three tabs, and picked up her notebook.
She went upstairs.
---
Room forty-two B had the same windows and the same table and the same view it always had. Zhou Cheng was at the side with his folder — also as always. The materials for the milestone review were on the table.
She sat down in the working position she had established as hers over the months — second chair from the end, angle adjusted for both screens. She opened her notebook. She wrote the date at the top. She looked at the materials.
She heard him come in.
She did not look up. She wrote a heading in her notebook: *Milestone review — contract.*
"Good morning, Miss Su."
She looked up.
He was at the head of the table, not yet seated, looking at the documents Zhou Cheng had placed. He had said the words while looking at the documents. His voice had the quality she had catalogued, over the months, as his professional-meeting voice — the specific efficiency of someone who had been to a great many meetings and had learned to enter them fully and completely without remainder.
"Good morning," she said.
She looked back at her notebook.
*Miss Su.*
She had been called this for the first two months. She had been called this in the formal briefings and the scope discussions and the early working sessions when they had both been learning the shape of the professional relationship they were going to have. She had been called this before she had been called *Wanqing* — before the late evenings and the whiteboard sessions and the night of the Meridian crisis and the Friday evening four days ago.
She registered the name. She wrote *contract terms review* in her notebook. She looked at the materials.
The meeting began.
---
It lasted twenty-five minutes.
The structure of it was straightforward: milestone achieved, contract proceeding, Meridian team satisfied with progress, three action items identified for the next phase. Zhou Cheng documented. Lu Jingheng ran the meeting with the efficient precision she had spent months learning to read — which questions required expansion, which observations required only acknowledgment, where the meeting needed to move and where it could slow down.
She contributed six times. Each contribution was relevant, specific, and well-received. She knew this because she was paying attention, and because she had developed enough professional sensitivity over the months to read when her contributions landed and when they missed.
They all landed.
She was good at this meeting. She was good at all the meetings.
She had walked back to her workstation after the meeting with the specific quality of someone who needed to walk before they could sit — the movement that created a brief interval between a thing that had happened and the sitting-with-it that followed. She had walked slowly. She had noticed the floor, the plants, the specific light coming through the windows at ten-fifty-five on a January morning.
She had sat down.
She had not opened anything immediately.
She had allowed herself approximately sixty seconds of simply sitting with what had happened in room forty-two B — the hearing of her name said in that specific way, the hearing of it again at the end — before she had applied the discipline of someone who knew that extended dwelling produced diminishing returns. Sixty seconds. Then she had opened the project file.
The project file had been the right choice. The project file required enough of her attention to occupy the foreground of her thinking while the background did what it needed to do. This was the specific function of work as a coping mechanism — not avoidance, which was the dysfunctional version, but productive occupation of the conscious mind while the processing happened at a lower level.
She had been using this particular mechanism for three years. She was, at this point, quite good at calibrating it.
This was, she had found, a consistent fact about the situation she was in: whatever else was complicated, the work itself was not. The work was simply work, and she was competent at it, and competence did not require that everything else be uncomplicated.
At the end of the meeting, as they were gathering materials: "Thank you, Miss Su."
She looked at him.
He was looking at the table — at the materials he was collecting, at the specific logistical action of closing a meeting. The same way he looked at everything he was doing when he was doing it with full attention and not looking at anything else.
"Of course," she said.
She walked out.
---
At her workstation, she sat for a moment without opening anything.
*Miss Su.*
Twice in twenty-five minutes. Not once, not a slip, not the particular kind of verbal correction that people made when they were in a context that defaulted to formality. Twice, with the specific quality of a choice rather than a habit, in the specific register of someone who was using a form of address because they had decided to use it.
She had been called *Wanqing* in this building eight days ago. She had been called *Wanqing* on the night they had worked through a crisis together, and the name had been said at two in the morning with the quality of something natural, something that came out because the natural thing had come out. She had been called *Wanqing* and she had used his name too, without title, without address, just his name, and neither of them had corrected the other.
Four days later: *Miss Su.*
She understood what this was.
She sat with the specific quality of understanding something you had not wanted to understand — not the understanding itself, which was clear and complete and not in question, but the specific quality of sitting with it. The understanding was: he had made a decision over the weekend. The decision was to return to the form of address that maintained the professional distance. The decision was not about forgetfulness or habit or the specific context of a formal meeting making the formal address feel appropriate. The decision was a choice, and the choice communicated something that was not complicated.
She had been here before. Not precisely here, not in this building, not with this person in this configuration. But she had been in the specific territory of understanding that someone was reestablishing a distance after a moment of closeness, and she knew the quality of it.
She opened the Meridian project file.
She looked at the visual system specifications she had been working on before the meeting. They were in good shape. They needed approximately two more hours of work before she could submit them to the extended team for review.
She began to work.
---
She did not work well for the first hour.
This was not surprising. She had not expected to work well for the first hour. She had given herself the first hour as an hour of working-while-processing — the kind of hour where she would do the tasks that did not require her full attention while the part of her that needed to process was processing, and then after the hour was done she would assess whether she was ready to do the work that required her full attention.
She sorted files. She updated the project tracker. She replied to two emails that required brief, factual responses. She did these things and let the other thing exist alongside them.
The other thing was this: she had allowed herself to care. Not unconsciously — she had been aware, for months, that she was being moved in a direction by a series of experiences that had accumulated toward something real. She had been *aware* of it even as she had declined to name it, and she had made a choice when she had not pulled away on Friday evening, and that choice had produced a consequence which was — which was what it was.
She had cared. She had been cared for, in the specific way of someone having coffee brought to them without being asked and a car arranged without negotiating and a name said differently than it had been said before.
She had believed, for the hour after the meeting, that the caring had been a temporary lapse
She had sat with this interpretation for a while, because it was available and because it was the kind of interpretation that required the least revision of her prior understanding. A temporary lapse. An uncharacteristic moment. Something that had happened and been corrected.
But she was a person who had learned, over significant cost, to interrogate her first interpretations rather than accept them. Her first interpretations were shaped by her history, by the frameworks she had been carrying, by the specific way the past had taught her to read certain kinds of behavior. Her first interpretations were frequently useful and occasionally wrong, and she had learned to check them.
The interpretation *temporary lapse* required Lu Jingheng to have experienced the events of last Friday as a loss of control that needed to be corrected. It required him to be someone whose primary response to closeness was regret.
She had been watching him closely for five months. She had built a significant body of observation about how he moved through the world and how he made decisions. She did not believe the *temporary lapse* interpretation was consistent with the evidence.
He had done this deliberately. Whatever the reason for it, the reinstatement of *Miss Su* was not accident or regret. It was intention.
— a moment of weakness on his part, a failure of the discipline he had been maintaining, a thing that had happened and that he was now correcting.
At one o'clock, she opened the private file.
---
She read through the six items. She read the hypothesis she had written: *He is keeping me away from something connected to the family.*
She sat with this.
Then she wrote a seventh item:
*7. Monday, Jan [date] — "Miss Su" returned. Two references in 25-minute meeting. Deliberate reinstatement of professional distance after Friday.*
She looked at the seven items.
She wrote below the hypothesis:
*The same logic applies to now. He is keeping me away from something. Including, currently, from him. The behavior is consistent with the hypothesis.*
She looked at this for a long time.
It did not make the hurt smaller. Understanding why someone did something did not make the thing they did stop hurting. She had learned this in the years of rebuilding — that comprehension and pain were not opposites, that you could understand a thing clearly and still feel the cost of it clearly, and that both of these were true simultaneously and did not cancel each other out.
She was hurting. She acknowledged this precisely, without elaboration.
She was also sitting with something else alongside the hurt: the hypothesis, which said that his behavior — the distance, the reinstatement of *Miss Su*, the careful management of proximity — was not what it appeared to be. Was not, specifically, indifference or regret or the specific cruelty of someone who had gotten what they wanted and was now withdrawing. Was something else. Something that had the same shape as protection.
She did not know, yet, whether the hypothesis was correct.
She was going to find out.
She saved the file. She closed it. She opened the visual system specifications.
She worked until six — solidly, with full attention, the kind of work she was capable of when she chose to give herself fully to it. The specifications were complete by five forty-five and she used the remaining fifteen minutes to begin the next section, which was the section she had been thinking about for two weeks and had not yet written, because it required a decision about the relationship between the primary and secondary marks that she had been holding at a slight distance until she was ready.
She was ready now.
She made the decision. She wrote it into the documentation. She saved the file.
She put on her coat.
---
In the lift, descending, she looked at herself in the mirrored door.
She looked tired. She looked like someone who had had a hard day after a complicated week. She looked like herself — not diminished, not crumbling, just carrying something that was heavy and not pretending otherwise.
She looked at herself for a moment.
Then she thought, with the specific clarity of someone who had been moving toward a question for months: *I need to find out who was in that January stakeholder meeting.* The one she had been removed from. The one with *stakeholder dynamics outside the project scope.*
She had been intending to do this since she had written *Next step* in the file. She had been managing other things — the Meridian crisis, the Friday evening, the Monday morning. She had been doing what you did when you had too many things in motion and not enough resources to pursue all of them simultaneously: you triaged. She had triaged.
The triage was over.
She had been triaging since October. She had been managing the distance and the hypothesis and the accumulated evidence and the Friday evenings and the names said in different registers and the moment that had lasted the length of a held breath. She had been managing all of it while also managing a significant creative project that required her full professional capacity, which had required her to be more efficient with her finite resources than she had perhaps ever been.
She was done being efficient about this. She was going to give it what it required.
She was going to find out who had been in that room and what the connection to the family was and what, exactly, she was being kept away from.
Not because it would change today. Today was what today was.
Because she had told Tang Xin she was staying for the truth, and she had meant it, and the truth did not care whether it was convenient to pursue it.
The lift opened.
She walked out into the cold January evening.
She thought, walking to the bus stop, about what it meant to pursue truth in the specific circumstances she was in.
She was pursuing truth about a person she had complicated history with, in a building where that person was her employer, while caring about that person in ways she had not yet fully articulated even to herself, while that person was simultaneously doing something she did not fully understand but that she believed was a form of protection rather than indifference.
None of these things made the pursuit easier. All of them made it more necessary.
She had told herself, weeks ago, that she was staying for the truth. She had not known, then, how much truth there was to find or how complicated it would be or how much it would cost to find it. She knew more now. She was not discouraged. She was, in fact, more committed than she had been at the beginning, because the more she understood the shape of what she was looking for, the more she believed it was the right shape.
She was going to find it.
She was going to be all right finding it.
She had work to do.
