CHAPTER 30 — THE PIECE THAT CHANGED THE PICTURE
She started with what she could find.
This was her method for every problem that required structured inquiry: start with the available data, map what you had, identify the gaps, and then identify the most efficient path to filling the most important gap. She had applied this method to design problems for years. She applied it now to a different kind of problem, and found that the method was the same and the problem was not different in kind, only in subject.
The question she was trying to answer: who had been in the January stakeholder meeting that she had been removed from, and what was the connection to the Lu family.
She began with the meeting notice itself. The notice had referenced *stakeholders outside the standard project structure* — which meant people who were not on the Meridian project team or the Lu Corporation executive group in its working configuration. She cross-referenced the conference room booking for that Thursday with the attendee list she could access through the project management system, which was not the full attendee list — she could see her own exclusion confirmed in the system, and she could see that Zhou Cheng had been listed, and Lu Jingheng, and two names she did not recognise.
She looked up the two names.
One was a partner at a law firm that the Lu family used for certain categories of transaction — she found this through a combination of public company filings and professional registry searches, the kind of research that was not secretive but required patience and the specific skill of reading corporate structure documents. The other name was less immediately traceable, but the combination of a name, a company name, and a LinkedIn profile told her enough: a representative of a family office that managed investments for several related entities, one of which had a discernible connection to the Lu family trust structure.
Neither of these people had anything to do with Meridian.
They had everything to do with the Lu family.
She sat with this for a moment. Then she opened a different kind of search.
---
She had been in the industry for several years. She had a network of the kind that accumulated over years of professional life — not a large network, she was not someone who maintained relationships for the sake of maintaining them, but a real one, built from genuine professional connections and occasional moments of mutual usefulness. She thought about who in that network might have overlap with the Lu Corporation's orbit in the period six years ago.
She was looking for someone who had been inside the system — close enough to observe things that were not visible from outside, far enough removed now that speaking about what they had observed was not professionally sensitive. Someone who had no reason to be anything other than honest because their stakes in the situation were low.
She found the name after approximately forty minutes of searching.
A woman named Zhang Li — she had gone by a different name professionally in the earlier period, which was why she hadn't appeared in Wanqing's initial searches — who had worked as a senior coordinator on the executive floor of Lu Corporation until approximately three years ago and had since moved to a creative production company that had done work adjacent to Wanqing's own practice. They had a mutual connection through a design industry body. Zhang Li was listed as having attended two professional events that Wanqing had also attended, which provided a natural pretext for contact.
Wanqing wrote a brief message.
The response came back within two hours: *Yes, I remember you from the industry panel last year. Happy to meet for coffee if you're in the area.*
---
They met on Thursday at a café near Zhang Li's current office — not near Lu Corporation, not near Wanqing's building. A neutral location, which suited Wanqing's purposes without requiring her to engineer it.
Zhang Li was approximately what her profile suggested: professional, direct, the specific quality of someone who had spent years in high-pressure environments and had come out of them with a clear-eyed understanding of how those environments worked. She was not guarded, but she was measured — she said what she knew and did not speculate beyond it, which was, Wanqing found, more useful than a more voluble source would have been.
They talked about the industry panel first. They talked about a client they had worked for in different capacities. The conversation was genuine — Wanqing had real questions, and Zhang Li had real things to say, and the first twenty minutes were simply a professional conversation between two people who had adjacent experience.
Then Wanqing said: "I'm working at Lu Corporation now. On the Meridian project — the brand engagement."
Zhang Li looked at her with the specific look of someone recalibrating context.
"I've heard about Meridian," she said. "Significant piece of work."
"It is," Wanqing said. "I've been there about five months. I'm still — " She paused, choosing the words with the specific care of someone who needed the sentence to be accurate and not telegraphic. "I'm still understanding how the family dynamics intersect with the company operations. There are things I notice that I don't have enough context for."
Zhang Li picked up her coffee. Held it for a moment.
"That's a polite way of putting it," she said.
"Is there a less polite way?"
Zhang Li looked out the window briefly. Then back at Wanqing. "The family and the company are not separate things, even when they appear to be. The company makes decisions. The family makes the conditions within which those decisions are possible." She set down her coffee. "I worked there for four years. You see a lot, in four years, of how those conditions get made."
"What do you mean by conditions?" Wanqing said.
Zhang Li was quiet for a moment — the quiet of someone deciding not how much to say, but how to say what they had decided to say. "The family doesn't act directly," she said. "Not usually. They don't need to. What they do is — adjust the environment. Make certain options less available. Make certain associations more costly than others. The people inside the system often don't see it happening because it doesn't happen in rooms they're in."
Wanqing listened.
She was listening with the specific quality of attention she reserved for things that mattered — not the professional attention of a meeting, where she was simultaneously tracking the content and managing her own contribution, but the deeper attention of someone receiving information that might be significant. Full reception. No output running in parallel.
Zhang Li spoke well. She had the clarity of someone who had thought through what she was willing to say before she said it, and who did not embellish or diminish — she described what she had observed, what she had inferred, and where the line between those two things was. Wanqing had encountered few people who were this precise about the epistemology of their own knowledge, and she found it, in this specific context, both useful and disorienting: useful because it meant the information was reliable; disorienting because reliable information about this subject was what she had been seeking and was not entirely sure she was ready to receive.
"There was a situation," Zhang Li said, after a pause that had the quality of a pause before something specific. "About six years ago. Before my time there, technically — I only heard about it secondhand, from people who had been there longer. A studio — small, creative work, design — had some business run off. Not attacked directly, nothing like that. The referrals that should have come didn't. The introductions that should have happened weren't made. The kind of quiet erosion that happens when a large network simply stops pointing in one direction."
Wanqing was looking at her coffee.
She was not going to look up. Looking up would be a tell, and she was not going to tell anything yet. She was going to let the sentence arrive fully and she was going to receive it without visible reaction and she was going to process it in the privacy of the space behind her expression.
"Why?" she said. Her voice was the same voice it had been for the past forty minutes.
"Someone connected to the family," Zhang Li said. "The way these things usually work — someone in the family wanted something to happen. Or wanted something to stop happening. The network did the rest." She paused. "I don't know the specifics. I wasn't there. But the pattern — it's recognisable."
"The studio," Wanqing said. "Do you know what happened to it?"
"It closed eventually. Couldn't sustain. These things usually can't, when the referral network stops working." Zhang Li looked at her with the specific look of someone who was paying more attention than she was indicating. "Did you know them?"
A pause of her own. Measured. The pause of someone who was deciding what was true and accurate to say.
"A long time ago," Wanqing said.
Zhang Li looked at her for a moment. Then she looked at her coffee.
"I'm sorry," she said. Simply, without elaboration. The way you said a thing that was true and did not require expansion.
---
They finished the meeting as they had begun it — professionally, normally, two people who had talked about work and industry and would probably have occasion to be in contact again. Wanqing thanked Zhang Li for her time. Zhang Li said to reach out if she had other questions. They parted at the café door with the standard pleasantries of professional acquaintances.
Wanqing walked to the underground.
She descended to the platform. She stood at the edge, not thinking yet — the specific state of someone who had just received a significant piece of information and was giving it time to settle before she tried to do anything with it. The train arrived. She got on. She sat down.
The city moved past the windows in the dark of the tunnel and then the grey of the January afternoon as the line emerged above ground.
Her parents' studio.
She said it to herself once, quietly, in the specific way she said things to herself that she needed to hear in order to believe them. Her parents' studio. The small practice they had built over fifteen years — not famous, not large, but theirs, the specific expression of what they had chosen to do with their professional lives. She had grown up around it. She had known its rhythms and its pressures and its specific quality of pride that came from making things for a living. She had, in some ways, become a designer because they were designers — not by following them, but because she had grown up in a household where making things was ordinary and therefore possible.
That practice. That had been the pressure point.
Six years ago. The referrals that didn't come. The introductions that weren't made. The quiet erosion of a network that had been, until it wasn't, pointing in their direction.
She had known, in the abstract, that the studio had closed. She had known the years it had operated and the year it had not. She had been told — by her parents, by the specific understated way her family communicated difficult things — that the work had become harder to find, that the clients who had been reliable became unreliable, that the market had shifted in ways that made it difficult to sustain a practice of that kind. She had accepted this. She had not pressed for more detail because she had been, at the time, in the worst years of her own situation, and the capacity to press for more detail had not been available to her.
She was pressing now.
She was pressing six years later, from the seat of a commuter train, with the specific sensation of a piece of the picture arriving that changed what the picture showed.
If the studio had been targeted — and Zhang Li's account had the specific quality of someone describing what they actually knew rather than speculating — then it had been targeted because of her. Because the family had wanted her gone from their heir's life and had applied the particular kind of pressure that left no fingerprints and required no direct confrontation. The studio had been the leverage.
She sat with this.
The train moved through the January afternoon. The other passengers around her were living their ordinary Thursdays — reading, looking at their phones, speaking quietly to companions. The city outside was the city it always was. None of this had changed.
What had changed was this: the narrative she had been carrying for six years — the narrative of a man who had chosen something other than her, who had made a decision that had ended them — had now acquired a context that the narrative had not previously had. A context in which the decision had not been freely made. A context in which the cost of the choice he had appeared to make had been paid not only by her.
She had known, from the hypothesis, that the family had been involved. The hypothesis had said: *he is keeping me away from something.* The hypothesis had implied that the involvement was real and structural and ongoing.
What she had not had, until now, was confirmation that the involvement had happened before. That it had a history. That the pattern she was seeing in the present was not new — it was a second iteration of something that had been done once already.
To her family.
---
She did not go directly home.
She walked for a while after leaving the station — the specific kind of walking she did when she needed to be in motion with a thought, when the thought required the movement of her body to process correctly. The January air was cold and direct and she was wearing enough to be warm and she walked through the streets near her apartment without particular direction.
She thought about the question she had asked Zhang Li: *The person in the family who wanted something — did they know what was happening to the studio?*
Zhang Li's answer: *They don't need to know the details. They say what they want. Others execute.*
She turned this over.
It was possible that Lu Jingheng had not known. It was possible that the old madam had given a direction — remove this woman from my grandson's life — and the direction had been executed through channels he was not aware of, and he had simply encountered the result. It was possible that he had known that the family was pressuring him and had decided to comply, without knowing what form the pressure had taken elsewhere.
It was also possible that he had known everything.
She did not know which was true. She did not have enough information.
What she did know, sitting with everything she had accumulated over the past weeks, was that the question of what he had known was now the most important question. Not because the answer would make the past hurt less — it would not, could not, the hurt was the hurt regardless of its origin. But because the answer changed what everything since meant. Changed what she was standing in, right now, in this January city, five months into a working relationship that had become something she did not have a clean name for.
She stopped on a corner she did not specifically recognise and stood for a moment in the cold air.
*Did he know?*
She didn't have that answer yet.
She was going to need it.
She thought about how the knowing would change things.
If he had not known — if the direction to remove her had come from above and the execution had been done through channels he was not aware of — then the question of his culpability was different. Complicated still, but different. The specific scene she had walked into six years ago, the things he had said, the way he had said them — those remained unchanged, regardless of what had been happening outside the room. He had still done those things. She had still walked away from that apartment carrying what she had been carrying ever since.
But the why would be different.
If he had not known the full extent of what was happening — if he had made the choice he had made under pressure and without knowledge of what that pressure was costing her family — then the six years of the story she had been telling herself had been six years of a story that was missing its most important context.
She was not ready to assign innocence. She did not have enough information to assign anything.
What she had was this: one person's account of a pattern that was consistent with her hypothesis, describing events that matched the timeline, referring to people who matched the people she knew to be involved. The specificity of *a small design studio*, *referrals that didn't come*, *about six years ago* was too particular to be coincidence.
The studio was real. The intervention was real. The family's involvement was real.
What remained unknown was the degree to which the man she had been working alongside for five months had known, at twenty-seven, what was being done on his behalf.
She needed to ask him.
Not today. Not yet.
She needed more ground under her feet before she could ask a question that would require her to hold his answer, whatever it was.
She turned and walked toward home, carrying the question and the picture and the specific weight of a thing that had been partial and was now, in one important dimension, complete. The picture was not finished. But it had changed. She had needed it to change.
She walked toward home.
