The dead did not wait.
That was what Master Orwin Pell said every time he needed someone to stay past the bell. The dead do not wait, Copyist Vale. The Vault remembers those who serve. He said it like a prayer, like a favor, like the words themselves were supposed to fill the gap where a wage increase should have been. Seren had heard it so many times that she had stopped hearing the words and started hearing only the sound — the particular flatness of a man who had learned that certain phrases, repeated often enough, became indistinguishable from policy.
She had been at her desk for eleven hours.
The Ash Annex smelled the way it always smelled after a mass intake — damp paper, cold stone, the faint iron undertone that never fully left no matter how many times the floor was scrubbed. Three oil lamps burned at the far end of the room because the overhead fixtures had not been repaired since the winter and no one had submitted the maintenance request twice, which was the number of times a request needed to be submitted before anyone in Middle Ring administration acknowledged it existed. Seren had submitted it once. She had noted the date in her personal ledger. She had not submitted it again because she had also noted, in the same ledger, that the last copyist who submitted maintenance requests twice had been reassigned to the tallow rendering district within a month, and the smell of tallow rendering was considerably worse than cold stone and iron.
She kept her head down and she kept her pen moving.
The intake from the Ashfield collapse had arrived in three batches across two days — four hundred and twelve names, most of them miners, most of them Unmarked, all of them requiring individual death records to be cross-referenced against the labor registry, the residential rolls, and the ash allocation ledger that determined whether a body went to the communal pyre or was held for family collection. Family collection required a claimant with valid identification. Most of the Ashfield dead did not have families who could produce valid identification on short notice, which meant most of them were going to the communal pyre regardless, which meant the cross-referencing was largely ceremonial, which meant Seren was spending eleven hours performing a ceremony for the benefit of a filing system that would forget these names within a generation.
She knew this. She did it anyway.
Two desks down, Maret had stopped moving. Not dramatically — she had not collapsed or cried out. She had simply slowed, and then slowed further, and then her pen had stopped tracking across the page and her head had dropped forward at an angle that suggested unconsciousness rather than concentration. Seren had watched it happen over the course of about twenty minutes, the way you watched a candle burn down when you needed the light to last.
Orwin had come through twenty minutes after that, done his circuit of the room, noticed Maret, and said: pull her chair to the side wall so she is not blocking the aisle, and make sure the ink pot is capped before you move anything. Then he had gone back upstairs.
Seren had capped the ink pot. She had moved the chair. She had put her own scarf over Maret's shoulders because the Ash Annex was cold enough at this hour that staying unconscious in it without extra warmth was its own particular hazard. Then she had gone back to her desk.
The dead do not wait.
She was on her two hundred and seventy-third record when the intake bell rang again.
It was past the third watch. No intake was scheduled. Seren set her pen down and looked up at the ceiling for a moment — not because there was anything to see there, only bare stone and the dark — and then she stood, straightened her coat, and went to the intake corridor.
The attendant on duty was a young man named Pest who had been working Mortuary Intake for three months and had not yet developed the particular blankness that long-term intake work required. He still looked at faces. He was looking at the face of the body on the transfer cart now, which told Seren this was not a standard intake.
“No paperwork,” Pest said when he saw her. “Just a transfer note. Hand-written.”
Seren took the note. The handwriting was careful — too careful, the kind of careful that came from someone writing slowly to disguise their natural hand. The seal at the bottom was a standard Records seal but the impression was slightly off-center, which meant it had been applied in a hurry or applied by someone using a seal they did not normally carry. She noted both things and said nothing.
“Marked?” she asked.
“Was,” Pest said.
She looked at the body then. Male, middle-aged, well-dressed in the particular way of someone in the upper tier of High Ring — not Crown Ring wealth, but comfortable. His hands were folded across his chest in the standard transfer position. His right wrist was visible.
The Vaultmark was gone.
Not obscured. Not damaged in the way that injury damaged things. The skin at his wrist had been cut — cleanly, deliberately, with something sharp enough to leave edges rather than tears. The mark had been excised the way you excised a passage from a document you did not want to exist anymore. What remained was a rectangular absence, the edges precise, the depth controlled. Whoever had done this had known exactly how deep to cut.
Seren stood very still for a moment.
Then she leaned forward, because there was something else. Beneath the cut, in the layer of tissue exposed by the removal, there were marks that were not the marks of a blade. Smaller. Deliberate in a different way. She had to angle the nearest lamp to see them properly, and when she did, she read them twice to make sure she was reading them correctly.
Three words.
THE SKY LIES.
The intake corridor was quiet. Pest was watching her with the expression of someone who wanted to be told what to think about what he was seeing. The body was still. The lamp flame moved slightly in a draft from somewhere in the wall.
Seren straightened up.
Her heart was beating faster than it should have been. Not because of the body — she had been working with bodies for four years and she had made a particular peace with them, the way you made peace with anything that appeared in your life often enough. It was the words. It was the fact that someone had cut the mark from a Marked man's wrist and written a sentence in the space beneath it, and the sentence was the one sentence that no one in Veyr Hollow was supposed to say.
She had heard it once before, when she was young — a Lower Rings man, drunk on grain spirit, shouting it at a Vaultbinder's procession from an upper window. He had been removed from his housing unit within the week. The official reason was a zoning violation. Everyone understood the actual reason.
The sky lies.
She looked at Pest. “Log it as an unidentified intake pending investigation,” she said. “Do not note the condition of the wrist in the public record. Write only: markings present, nature unclear, referred for specialist review.”
Pest opened his mouth.
“If anyone asks,” Seren said, “you followed standard protocol for anomalous intake. That is true. You did.”
He closed his mouth and nodded.
She went back to her desk. She did not go back to the Ashfield records. Instead she took a fresh sheet of paper from the bottom of her personal stack — the paper she bought herself, thinner and cheaper than the Records-issued paper but hers, not inventoried, not tracked — and she wrote down exactly what she had seen. The position of the cut. The depth. The precision of the edges. The words, letter by letter. The transfer note's irregularities. The seal.
She wrote it all down in her smallest handwriting, the handwriting she used when she needed to fit a great deal onto a small surface, and when she was done she folded the paper into a square small enough to fit behind the false backing she had cut into the bottom of her center drawer three years ago.
She sat for a moment with her hand flat on the desk.
Then she picked up her pen and went back to the Ashfield records, because the dead did not wait, and she had two hundred and thirty-nine names left to go, and whatever was happening in Veyr Hollow was going to be happening whether she finished them or not. The least she could do was finish them.
Record two hundred and seventy-four: Tamis, a miner, aged approximately forty, no surviving family listed. The official record had his name as Tam, no surname, no district notation.
In her personal draft, Seren wrote: Tamis Wold, Lower Ashfield, forty-one years, survived by a daughter in the tallow district whose name she had seen in the residential cross-reference and which she wrote down now, next to his, so that at least in one place in The Last Records they existed in the same sentence.
The lamp burned low. She did not stop writing.
