The second body arrived without announcement, the way things in the Ash Annex often arrived — a notation in the intake log, a transfer cart in the corridor, and a sheet of paper that explained nothing adequately.
Seren found the intake log entry when she came in for the morning shift. The entry had been made by the overnight clerk, a man named Doss who had been with the Records for twelve years and who had developed, over those twelve years, an intake notation style that contained the minimum possible information while technically fulfilling the documentation requirement. His entry for the second body read: transfer from Mortuary, Unmarked male, no documentation attached, ref: shift supervisor.
The shift supervisor was Orwin, who had left a note on top of the intake log that said: process per standard Unmarked no-claim protocol, flag for communal pyre allocation if no family contact within three days.
Standard Unmarked no-claim protocol meant: abbreviated name if available, no surname, cause of death as provided on transfer sheet, body held for three days then released for communal processing. It was a procedure that moved efficiently and left very little trace.
Seren looked at the note for a moment, then went to the intake corridor.
The body was a man, probably mid-thirties, Unmarked, with the physical indicators of someone who had done physical labor for most of his life — the particular callusing pattern on the hands, the musculature of the arms and shoulders, the wear on the joints visible even in the stillness of death. His face was unremarkable. His clothing was lower district work wear, worn but maintained.
His cause of death was not obvious from visual examination. There were no apparent injuries, no bruising pattern consistent with violence, no markers of disease. Which was worth noting, because transfer from Mortuary without documentation usually meant either an Ash Annex overflow situation or a case that someone in the intake system had decided was too complicated to process at the standard level.
She checked the transfer sheet. The cause of death listed was natural causes. No attending medical officer listed. No location of death.
She set the transfer sheet down and looked more carefully.
The skin of his forearms was normal. The skin of his upper arms was normal. At the shoulder, where the shirt had been displaced slightly in transit, there was something.
She moved the lamp closer.
On the left shoulder — and the location registered in a specific way, in the part of her mind that had been accumulating specifics for several weeks — there was a mark. Not a Vaultmark. She had processed enough records, seen enough mark documentation in case files, to know at a glance what a Vaultmark looked like. This was not that. The form was similar — the enclosed arc, the deliberate linework — but the execution was wrong in ways she could not fully articulate but could clearly perceive. The lines did not have the same quality. The edges bled slightly into the surrounding skin. The ink was too dark, too matte, without the faint iridescence that mark documentation photographs always showed in Vaultmarks.
And under the mark, cut into the skin with the same precision she had seen on the first body:
THE SKY LIES.
She stood back from the transfer cart.
The first body had been Marked. Someone had cut the Vaultmark from his wrist and carved the phrase into the exposed tissue. The implication of that act had been about removal — taking away what the mark represented.
This body was Unmarked. Someone had placed a false mark on his shoulder and carved the same phrase beneath it. The implication of this act was different. Or the same act applied to the opposite subject produced a different meaning. She was not sure yet which it was.
“Looks like Graftmark work.”
She turned. One of the older intake clerks — a woman named Bessa who had been in the Records long enough to have opinions about everything and enough seniority to express them — was standing in the doorway of the corridor, looking at the body with the expression of someone who had seen a great many things and was currently adding this to the list.
“Graftmark,” Seren said.
“Failed one, looks like. See how the edges bleed? That’s what happens when the binding doesn’t take properly.” Bessa came into the room and looked more closely, then stepped back. “Heard stories. Never seen the result before.” She looked at Seren. “People have died from it. From the failed attempts, and from the successful ones too, eventually. The successful ones just take longer.”
“What is a Graftmark?” Seren asked. She kept her voice at the register of professional inquiry.
“Dark business,” Bessa said. “Mark that isn’t a Mark. Someone figured out, a long time ago, that you could make something that looked like a Vaultmark if you had the right materials and the right knowledge and didn’t care about the cost.” She was looking at the body’s shoulder. “Can’t be bought. Can’t be earned. You don’t choose it, mostly. It chooses you, which is a comfortable way of saying that the people who make them choose you, and they choose carefully.” She straightened up. “Person who gets one never really owns it. The other way around.”
She left without elaborating further, which was her style.
Seren stood with the body and the lamp and the bleed-edged mark on the dead man’s left shoulder, and she thought about Cassian’s wrist and the way the mark there had moved in the light, and she took out her ledger and wrote down what she had seen and what Bessa had said and the words that were carved beneath the false mark, and she felt the shape of something she could not yet name beginning to become visible the way shapes in the Underways became visible when Alden moved the lamp.
She was still standing with the ledger in her hand when Alden appeared at the intake corridor entrance.
He looked at her, then at the body, then at the mark on the shoulder. He came into the room and looked at it properly, in silence, for a long moment.
“The man I was looking for,” he said. “Corvin Ash. He was asking questions about a Graftmark. He had heard rumors of someone in the Lower Rings who had received one and then disappeared.” He looked at Seren. “This isn’t Corvin. I don’t recognize this man. But the mark —”
“Failed attempt,” Seren said. “I was told. Someone tried to give this man a Graftmark and it didn’t bind correctly.” She looked at the carving beneath it. “Or someone put a failed attempt on his body after the fact, to send a message.”
“The same message as the first body.”
“The same words. But the direction is different. The first body: remove the Vaultmark, write the words. The second body: place a false mark, write the words beneath it. Someone is making an argument about the marks. Both kinds.”
Alden was looking at the carving.
“The people on the list in the tunnel,” he said. “Corvin was tracking people who appeared in mortality records but weren’t actually dead. Three of them have been found — the ones whose names you recognized. All dead. All in circumstances that don’t fully match their official cause of death.” He was quiet for a moment. “There are two names on the list I haven’t traced yet. I need to find them before whoever is removing inconvenient witnesses finds them first.”
“And Corvin himself.”
“And Corvin himself.”
Seren looked at the man on the transfer cart. He had no name in the intake log. He had no documentation. In three days he would go to the communal pyre as Unmarked male, no claim, natural causes.
She would write his record. She would write it exactly the way the system required her to write it. And in her personal draft she would write everything she had observed, and the words carved into his shoulder, and the fact that someone had tried to give him a mark he was not born with and it had failed, and whatever name she could find for him before the three days were up.
Somewhere above them, in the upper tiers of the Records building, people were arriving for the morning shift. The day was beginning. The system was opening for business.
In the Ash Annex, with a second body that complicated everything they thought they were looking at, Seren closed her ledger and began filling out the standard intake form. She wrote exactly what was required and nothing else, and while she wrote it she was thinking about what came next, and about the routing card in her pocket pointing at an empty room, and about a mark that moved on a wrist that should not have had a mark at all.
The work was what it was. She did it. And beneath it, in the space between what the system saw and what she was actually doing, she kept building a picture that the system would never see.
That was, she had decided, the only power she actually had. She intended to use it.
