Merrit's account took shape in her ledger over the following two days, as she cross-referenced what he had told her against the records she had access to and the records she had found ways to access that she was not strictly authorized for.
The structure of it was this:
Six men had been working the Ashfield shaft lift on a specific cycle three years prior — a maintenance rotation, the kind of shift that happened every quarter when the mechanical components of the lift system required inspection. The shift had been unremarkable except for a single event: a Marked man had appeared at the lower access point of the shaft, which was not a location that Marked visitors typically had reason to visit, and had spent approximately two hours in the sub-level maintenance area before departing through the upper access.
The six men had noticed him because his presence was anomalous. Marked residents did not come to the shaft sub-levels. The sub-levels were the working end of Ashfield — the mechanical room, the cable anchors, the drainage systems, the structural inspection points where the shaft walls met the bedrock of the Hollow. There was nothing in the sub-levels that a person of High Ring affiliation would ordinarily have business with.
The man had told the shift supervisor he was conducting a structural assessment. He had produced documentation that the supervisor had not examined closely because documentation produced by a Marked individual at a facility that depended on Marked authorization for its operating licenses was documentation you did not examine closely if you wanted to continue operating.
He had spent two hours in the sub-levels. He had been alone. When he left, he had taken the upper access, which led directly to a street-level exit with access to the High Ring transit corridor.
Within six months, four of the six men on that shift had records in the Ash Annex mortality files.
Seren had the records. She had pulled them during the overnight shift when the Ash Annex was quiet, cross-referencing by the shift date and the Ashfield location. The records were, in the way that Bessa had described and that Seren had begun to recognize, very clean.
The first had died of a fever. The record was complete — attending medical notes, cause confirmed, body claimed and cremated. Nothing missing. Nothing inconsistent. The second had died in the Lower Rings flooding event eighteen months prior. His record was in the batch she had been re-filing. Complete, consistent, cause confirmed. The third and fourth had died of causes that were common enough in Lower Rings to attract no particular scrutiny — one was listed as cardiac failure, one as an accident in a workshop.
Four clean deaths. Four men who had been in a specific place at a specific time and had subsequently ceased to exist in the way that people in the Records ceased to exist: tidily, with documentation that asked no questions.
Corvin Ash had not been in the Ash Annex files. He was the fifth man on the shift. The sixth was Merrit.
Merrit had told her what he knew about the Marked man's visit — which was limited, because he had been in the cable room for most of the shift and had only seen the man briefly at the access point. But he had seen the Vaultmark. And the Vaultmark had a specific characteristic that he had described to her in the tunnel: a secondary arc, a small additional element in the lower left quadrant of the standard mark form, that was not part of any mark configuration he had seen on the standard Marked Houses whose representatives came through Ashfield regularly.
It was distinctive enough that she could check it against the gia phả records. The gia phả records were in the House Genealogy Vaults, which required clearance she did not have.
Alden had gotten her the alternative route.
The High Ring boundary archive, which they had accessed through the maintenance tunnels, held secondary documentation for High Ring residents including copy records of Vaultmark registration forms — the forms submitted when a House registered a new member's mark with the Records system. The registration forms included sketches of the mark for identification purposes.
She had gone through every registration form for the twelve major Houses over the previous forty years. It had taken three visits across two weeks.
The secondary arc in the lower left quadrant appeared in the Vaelor family registration records. Not the main Vaelor line — a collateral branch, registered thirty-one years ago, with a note that the branch had been absorbed back into the main Vaelor line following a property settlement and had not registered new members since.
House Vaelor.
She sat with this in the Ash Annex at the end of a late shift, the building quiet around her, her ledger open to the page where she had written the name two weeks ago and had been adding to ever since.
House Vaelor. A member of a Vaelor collateral branch had been in the Ashfield shaft sub-levels three years ago, examining the structural walls where the shaft met the bedrock. Within six months, four of the six people who had seen him were dead, with clean records. The fifth was missing. The sixth was hiding.
The first body to arrive in the Ash Annex with a carved Vaultmark and the words THE SKY LIES had been Marked. His Vaultmark had been cut away. He had, according to the transit record that she had decoded through three layers of misfiling and cross-reference, been associated with the High Ring Boundary zone, which was where the Vaelor collateral branch had maintained its residential address before the property settlement.
The connection was not proven. She was careful about the difference between a connection and a proof. But the shape of it was becoming clearer.
She wrote: *Someone from Vaelor was examining the bedrock walls at Ashfield. The walls where the shaft meets the Hollow's structural base. If the Hollow is built on something, the base is where you would look to find it. If what you found at the base was dangerous to know — dangerous enough to kill six witnesses — what was it?*
She underlined the last question.
Then she closed the ledger and began the next day's stack, because the dead were still arriving and the names still needed to be written correctly, and whatever was happening in the upper levels of Veyr Hollow's power structure, the people in the lower levels were still dying in the ordinary ways and still deserving of accurate records.
She processed twenty-two records before the bell rang for shift change.
All twenty-two were complete. All twenty-two had full names in her personal draft.
