The Vaelor charitable delegation arrived at The Last Records on a cycle that Seren had not been told about in advance, which meant either the scheduling notification had not been distributed to the Ash Annex level — which was standard; notifications did not always reach the lower floors — or the visit had been arranged quickly and the notification had not been sent at all.
Ilyra appeared at the Ash Annex door at the third bell with the expression she wore when she needed something done without the appearance of having asked for it.
“The Vaelor delegation is here. They're doing the annual records access tour. I need someone from Annex who can answer questions about mortality record processing if asked. You're the fastest and you know the systems.” She said this as though it were a compliment. “One hour. Stay in the background. Answer questions if directed to you. Don't volunteer information.”
Seren put down her pen and went upstairs.
The delegation was seven people: four House staff, two administrative assistants, and Maris Vaelor at the front. Maris was thirty-three years old, tall, with the composed posture of someone who had been trained from childhood to move through formal spaces without signaling effort. She wore the Vaelor house colors without ostentation — a silver pin at the collar, the House emblem small and present rather than prominent. Her Vaultmark was visible at the cuff.
She spoke well. This was the first thing Seren noted — she spoke to every person she addressed, Marked and Unmarked alike, with the specific quality of making eye contact. Not as a performance. It appeared to be how she communicated. This distinguished her from most of the tầng cao visitors Seren had processed paperwork for, who spoke to Unmarked staff through intermediaries or at a point slightly above eye level.
The tour moved through the Civil Ledgers section, the main records hall, the processing floor. Seren stayed at the back of the group as instructed and watched.
In the Cross-Reference section, Maris moved through the aisles at the pace of someone on a guided tour — interested, present, not pausing unnecessarily. Until she reached the fourth aisle.
The fourth aisle held, among other things, the Ash Winter cross-indexes. Seren had been in this aisle. She knew the placement of the Emergency Intake, Cycle 7 documentation — fifth kệ from the entrance, third shelf.
Maris walked at the same pace until she reached the fifth kệ. Then her pace slowed — fractionally, not enough for anyone except someone specifically watching to notice — and her right hand, held at her side, extended slightly, and her fingers moved along the gáy of the hồ sơ on the third shelf. Slowly. Reading the labels, or looking for something specific among them.
Her fingers stopped.
One second. Maybe two.
Then she continued at her normal pace, catching up with the group without appearing to have fallen behind.
Seren noted the position of her fingers when they stopped: the Ash Winter Emergency Intake, Cycle 7, Lower Ring Triage Records.
The same hồ sơ. The infant record with no intake date.
She filed this without expression and continued at the back of the group.
The formal portion of the visit concluded in the main reception hall, where the delegation presented the annual charitable contribution — a sum directed toward the Records maintenance fund, specifically designated for the Unmarked mortality record section. Maris gave a short address about the importance of accurate record-keeping, the dignity of those whose names were in the files, the responsibility of institutions like The Last Records to maintain the integrity of the historical record.
Seren copied the address into her notes. Not because she had been asked to. Because she wanted the exact words, not her recollection of them.
The words were correct. They described real values. Seren did not doubt that Maris meant them.
She also did not think meaning the words was sufficient to explain why Maris's fingers had stopped at the Cycle 7 Emergency Intake file in an aisle she had no particular reason to visit, at a kệ she had not been directed to, during a tour that was supposed to stay on the administrative floors.
Near the end of the event, Maris came to the records processing table where Seren was standing with the documentation from the donation. She looked at the paperwork. Then she looked up at Seren with the direct quality she used for everyone, and for a moment she was simply looking — not at the records, not at the room, at Seren specifically.
“You work in the Ash Annex,” she said. Not a question.
“Four years,” Seren said.
“The mortality records.”
“Primarily Unmarked intake. Mass event processing. Re-filing.” She kept her voice at the register of professional conversation.
Maris was quiet for a moment. Her eyes were steady. “I'm sorry,” she said.
It was the kind of apology that was not attached to a specific action — the free-floating kind, the kind that acknowledged a condition rather than an event. Seren had heard this type before, from Marked visitors who came to the lower floors and became briefly aware of what the lower floors were. The awareness usually resolved within an hour of departure.
But the quality of this one was different. Maris was not looking past her. She was looking at her, and the apology had the weight of something that had been carried for a long time before being said.
“Thank you for the donation,” Seren said.
Maris nodded once and moved back toward the group.
Seren stood with the paperwork and thought about fingers stopping on the spine of a specific file in an aisle there was no reason to visit. And about an apology that was specific enough to be genuine and vague enough to be anything.
In her ledger that evening: *Maris Vaelor — stopped at Ash Winter Emergency Intake, Cycle 7, third shelf, fourth aisle. Duration two seconds. No documentation removed. Apology at close of visit — unattributed, weighted. Not a social formality. Something specific.*
She underlined *something specific* and sat with it for a long time before she closed the ledger and went back to the stack.
