The cổng phụ at High Ring Boundary was not on any official map of Veyr Hollow's access infrastructure.
This was not unusual. The Hollow had more unofficial access points than official ones — the result of two hundred years of construction, modification, and the tendency of people with resources to create private routes between locations they wanted to move between without appearing in the traffic records. The official access map showed forty-two gates between the ring levels. Alden's working knowledge of the actual infrastructure suggested the real number was closer to ninety.
This particular gate was at the back of a commercial building in the Middle Ring transition zone, accessed through a loading bay that the building's current tenants used for storage and which had not been used for its original purpose in at least twenty years. The gate mechanism was hidden behind a section of false wall that Cassian had located — or known about — or found through whatever means Cassian used to locate things that should not be findable.
Cassian met them at the loading bay entrance.
He was already there when they arrived, which meant he had arrived first and had been waiting, which meant he knew the meeting time. Seren had not told him the meeting time. She had not told him they were coming here at all. She noted this and added it to the accumulating record of what Cassian knew that he should not know.
He looked at her first. He always looked at her first, in the half-second before he looked at Alden, and she had been tracking this since he reappeared and had confirmed it was consistent. She looked back at him and he moved his attention to Alden.
“You need the Boundary gate,” Cassian said.
“We need access to the High Ring Boundary transfer registry,” Alden said. “The physical records, not the administrative copies. The originals.”
“The originals are in the Boundary administrative archive. That archive connects to the main High Ring records infrastructure, which has Vaultbinder oversight.” Cassian looked at him. “This is not a casual visit.”
“No,” Alden said.
Cassian looked at Seren. She looked back at him without expression, because whatever calculation he was running, she was not going to assist it by showing him what she wanted from the outcome.
He turned and led them into the loading bay.
The false wall mechanism was a specific sequence of pressure points — Cassian knew it, Alden studied it in three repetitions and remembered it, Seren memorized the pattern for future reference. The gate behind the wall was a functional access point: the mechanism worked, the seals were current, it would pass as a valid transit route if the documentation were checked.
Cassian placed his wrist at the activation point.
The mechanism required a Vaultmark to trigger. His mark activated it — she watched the sequence, the contact of the mark with the reader surface, the gate's response. The activation was slightly slower than she would have expected from a Vaultmark at a well-maintained gate. There was a moment of latency between contact and response, as though the gate were processing something more complex than a standard verification.
And then Cassian's mark responded.
She had seen it move before — the subsurface shift, like liquid in a channel beneath solid glass. This time, with his wrist pressed against the reader for several seconds, the movement was more pronounced. The edges of the mark blurred fractionally. A dark line formed briefly at the lower edge, like ink pressed too hard against a surface and spreading beyond the intended boundary.
He pulled his wrist back faster than the gate's confirmation required.
His right hand moved to cover his left wrist briefly — a pressure, a single second — and then he lowered it and the movement was covered by the motion of stepping through the gate.
“Dấu thật hay giả quan trọng gì,” he said, not quite to anyone. “Cửa mở là được.”
The gate was open. They went through.
The Boundary administrative archive was accessed through a service corridor that Alden navigated from Cassian's prior description, checked against his own spatial memory of the building's footprint from previous tunnel access. The archive held physical registry books — the originals, bound and shelved, for the Boundary zone's movement and mortality records going back forty years.
Seren found the Vaelor collateral branch member in forty minutes.
The name was in a transfer record — a regular High Ring resident moving through the Boundary zone on a specific cycle three years prior, the same cycle as the Ashfield shaft visit. The transfer record noted destination: Lower Ring transit, temporary work assessment. The Vaultmark registration attached to the record showed the mark configuration — and in the lower left quadrant, clearly visible in the original document that the administrative copy had reduced to a standard notation, the secondary arc.
Vaelor collateral. Third generation. Name: Cael Vaelor-Ross.
She copied the name and the mark configuration into her ledger.
On the way back through the Boundary gate, Cassian walked ahead of them along the loading bay corridor, and Seren watched the way he moved. He walked the way he had always walked — with that quality of deliberate ease — but his left arm was held slightly differently than usual, slightly closer to his body, the unconscious protection of something that had been hurt.
Alden walked beside her. He said nothing about Cassian's arm. She said nothing about it either.
They separated at the Middle Ring connector. Cassian went north, toward whatever routes he used. Alden and Seren went east, toward the Records district.
When Cassian was out of sight, she said: “House Vaelor.”
Alden said: “House Vaelor.”
She wrote the name in her ledger that evening at the top of a new page, and under it, the cross-references she had been building for weeks: the Ashfield shaft sub-levels, the six witnesses, the clean deaths, the infant record with no intake date, the replaced floor boards in the Wren house, the Ash Winter Emergency Intake Cycle 7, the stopped fingers of Maris Vaelor in the Cross-Reference aisle.
House Vaelor was at the center of it.
She did not yet know what *it* was. But the shape of it was becoming clearer, the way shapes became clearer when you had enough reference points to start connecting them.
She wrote: *Cael Vaelor-Ross. Ashfield sub-levels, three years ago. Six witnesses. Four dead. One missing. One hiding. Left shoulder. Wren house. Ash Winter.*
She looked at what she had written for a long time.
Then she turned the page and started the next section.
