The birth had been expected for weeks.
In the Lower Fifth residential block where Mara and Tobin Wren had lived for eleven years, a birth was a community event whether or not the parents wished it to be — the neighboring women had opinions about timing and preparation, the older men offered advice about winter births that nobody had asked for, and the children of the block had been told there would be a baby soon and had been checking in with regular and somewhat exhausting frequency.
Mara had been ready. She had done what she knew to do: kept the room warm, kept herself as well-fed as the Ash Winter allocations allowed, rested when the work permitted resting. She was thirty-one years old and she had wanted this for a long time, and she had allowed herself, carefully, to believe it would be all right.
The labor started on the sixth day of Ash Winter, when the heating system for their block had been running at half capacity for two days and the temperature in the lower floors dropped below what was comfortable to what was dangerous for someone in her condition. Tobin brought in everything they had for fuel and kept the room as warm as he could. The midwife from the end of the street came and stayed.
The labor was long. By the end of it, Mara was exhausted in the way that went past the body and into something else, the place past exhaustion where you stopped making calculations and simply waited for whatever came next.
The baby came at the third watch.
The midwife lifted it and it did not cry.
Mara knew immediately. She had helped at enough births to know what the silence meant — had known it in the quality of the midwife's hands, in the particular way the woman's shoulders changed, in the absence of the sound that should have been the first thing she heard. She had known before she saw, and the seeing only confirmed what she already knew.
The midwife did everything she could. She had been doing this work for thirty years and she had the particular competence of someone who had faced this before and knew that competence was not always sufficient. After a while she stopped.
Tobin stood in the doorway. He did not come in for a long time.
Mara held the baby and did not speak.
Tobin told the neighbors that mother and child were resting and needed quiet. In Ash Winter, this was believable — the illness was moving through the block, people were keeping to themselves, the usual traffic of communal life had reduced to essential contact. No one pushed to see the baby. No one questioned the quiet from the Wren apartment in the days that followed.
On the second evening, there was a knock at the door.
Tobin opened it. The woman on the other side was someone he had seen before in the building — Unmarked, middle-aged, with the specific posture of someone who had spent years making themselves unobtrusive in spaces where Unmarked people were not the primary concern. She was wearing a damp coat and she was carrying a bundle wrapped in cloth.
The bundle made a sound.
“I need help,” she said. Her voice was very controlled. “This child comes from a place where it is not allowed to live. If I take it back, it will die. If I leave it here, it might not.” She looked at Tobin steadily. “You lost a child two days ago. I know this because I know things in this building. I am asking you to consider.”
Tobin stood in the doorway for a long moment, looking at the bundle. The sound it was making was small and intermittent — not distressed, just present. The sound of something alive.
He stepped back from the door.
The woman — Nessa Rill, though Tobin did not know her name yet — came inside. She set the bundle on the table and unwrapped it with the careful efficiency of someone who had been carrying it through cold streets for long enough that she was worried about warmth.
The infant was small, dark-haired, with the compact density of a newborn that had arrived close to its full term. It looked at the lamp above the table with the unfocused attention of the very newly born.
Nessa said: “I don't know where it should go. I only know it cannot go back.”
Tobin called Mara from the other room.
She came to the doorway and stood there looking at the infant on the table. She had been in the other room for two days with her dead child and the particular silence that followed that kind of loss. She stood in the doorway now and looked at this living one.
Nessa Rill stepped back to allow Mara to approach.
Mara went to the table. She picked the infant up with the automatic competence of someone who had held many infants, and she held it, and it looked at her with the unfocused attention of the newly born, and she looked back at it.
“Who does it belong to?” she asked.
“To the place it cannot live,” Nessa said. “Not to anyone who will come looking. I can promise you that.”
Mara held the infant for a while longer. Then she said: “What does it need?”
Nessa told her.
It was late in the night, after Nessa had gone and after Tobin had brought everything they had for the infant's immediate needs, that Mara undressed the baby for the first time to assess its condition. It was well-formed, healthy by any visible measure, warmer now than it had been when it arrived. She checked it systematically, the way she had been taught.
On the left shoulder, she found the mark.
She did not recognize it. It looked, in some ways, like the Vaultmarks she had seen on Marked residents — the enclosed form, the deliberate line quality. But it was not enclosed. It was open at the top, the line ending before it completed the circuit, in the way of something that had not finished.
She looked at it for a long time.
She had no knowledge of marks — not their mechanics, not their significance, not their varieties. She was an Unmarked woman in Lower Fifth who worked a textile labor rotation and who had wanted a child for a long time. What she knew about marks was what everyone in Lower Rings knew: that people who had them lived differently than people who didn't, and that the difference was not in their favor.
What she understood, looking at the mark on the infant's left shoulder, was simpler and more immediate than any analysis of ritual mechanics: this child had something on its body that would make it visible in a way that was dangerous. Whatever it was — mark, anomaly, difference — it would be seen. And things that were seen were acted upon.
She covered the shoulder.
In the morning, when Tobin woke, she said: “We need to find the woman who lives at the end of the lower hẻm. The one they call Mother Sable.”
Tobin looked at her. “Why?”
“Because this child needs to be able to live here,” she said. “And it can't live here looking like this.”
She named the child Alden that morning. She did not explain the name. It was the name that had been in her mind when she looked at him, and it fit, and that was sufficient.
Outside, Ash Winter continued.
