The labor registry entry for Nessa Rill was three lines long.
Name, designation — domestic and medical support, Unmarked — employer, House Vaelor residential staff, and a service period of twelve years ending with a notation that read: *service concluded, Ash Winter, cycle 7.* No reason given. No discharge record. No transfer to another household. The entry simply stopped, the way entries stopped when the person involved was no longer available to generate further entries.
Seren found the mortality record in the same search. Nessa Rill, Unmarked female, aged forty-seven, cause of death: respiratory failure, Ash Winter, cycle 7. The record was filed in the Middle Ring mortality register rather than the Lower Rings register, which was where an Unmarked domestic worker would normally be filed — a minor bureaucratic anomaly that would not have attracted attention from anyone not looking for it.
The record was complete. All fields filled. Cause of death confirmed by attending medical officer, body claimed and processed by House Vaelor representative. Everything in order.
Alden looked at the mortality record for a long time without speaking.
They were in the lower archive of the High Ring boundary building — the same space where she had found Cael Vaelor-Ross's transfer record. Alden had come with her this time, using the maintenance tunnel access, and had been reading over her shoulder as she pulled the Vaelor staff records.
“Too clean,” he said finally.
“For Ash Winter, yes. The mortality records from that period are among the most inconsistent in the system — missing fields, wrong dates, bodies filed under wrong names or wrong districts. A complete, error-free record from the peak of the outbreak is unusual.” She paused. “Not impossible. Just unusual.”
“But House Vaelor sent a representative to claim the body.”
“For an Unmarked domestic worker. Yes.” She looked at the record. “They wanted to make sure she was processed. No loose ends. No one looking for her, no one asking questions about where she'd been or what she'd been doing in the last weeks of her employment.”
Alden was quiet for a moment. “She saved my life,” he said. Not to Seren specifically — to the record, or to the room, or to the fact of it. “And then she died, and House Vaelor made sure she was filed correctly. So that no one would notice the timing.”
“The timing is notable,” Seren said. “Her employment record ends the same week as her death. Which is the same week as the Ash Winter emergency period when the infant records show a transfer to the Wren household.” She did not say *your transfer.* The connection was clear enough without the words. “Three things in the same week. Any one of them alone would not be significant. All three together —”
“Is a pattern.”
“Is a pattern,” she confirmed.
She copied the relevant fields into her ledger and returned the record to its shelf. Outside the archive's small window, the High Ring boundary zone was in its mid-cycle activity — the movement of people and goods between the ring levels, the traffic of the administrative infrastructure that kept Veyr Hollow running. Normal and continuous, as it had been for as long as anyone alive could remember.
On the way back through the maintenance tunnel, Alden was in front as usual, the lamp held steady. He moved without hesitation through the sections she still needed to count steps to navigate. She had been in these tunnels enough times now that her body was starting to remember the routes without her conscious direction — the drop in the floor at the eastern junction, the low section near the Records access point, the place where the wall curved inward and you needed to angle your shoulders.
She was thinking about Nessa Rill. About what it had cost her to carry an infant out of House Vaelor in the middle of Ash Winter and hand it to a woman she did not know and then die, cleanly, in a record that House Vaelor had ensured was processed correctly.
She did not know if Nessa's death had been natural or not. The record was clean but records could be made clean. She did not know if Nessa had chosen to leave, or been removed, or simply died of the same illness that killed many people that winter. She did not have enough information to know.
What she knew was that someone had made a decision — had decided that an infant should not die because of the mark it had been born with — and had acted on that decision at significant personal cost. And that the record of that decision had been buried under the weight of Ash Winter's administrative chaos, filed correctly, processed without comment, and left to disappear into the archive.
She wrote it down. She always wrote things down.
Behind her, in the section of the tunnel they had just passed through, Cassian leaned against the wall in the dark and listened to their footsteps fade.
He had been following them at enough distance to avoid detection for the better part of two weeks. Not because he had been asked to. Not because he had been assigned to. Because he had been unable to stop — unable to stop tracking where they went and what they were finding, unable to stop watching the shape of the thing they were building together, the way two people built something when they trusted each other and each had what the other needed.
He had watched Alden help Seren over the dropped floor section near the eastern junction. The hand contact, brief, functional. The ease of it — the way neither of them commented on it, the way it was simply part of how they moved together in this space.
He had watched Seren hand Alden the lamp when his hands were occupied and take it back when his hands were free again, without negotiation, without the small awkwardness of two people still working out how to share a space.
He had watched them and he had thought about Little Sky and he had thought about Elia and he had thought about the Graftmark on his wrist and the name it was anchored to and the fact that he had paid the price for something that had not given him what he thought it would.
He waited until their footsteps were fully gone. Then he went his own way, through a different section of the tunnel network, toward a meeting he had not told them about.
