The medical intake records from Ash Winter were stored in the lower section of the Records building's auxiliary archive — the part of the building that had been built as an overflow facility fifty years ago and had been in continuous use ever since, which meant it had the particular quality of spaces that had been temporary for so long they had become permanent without anyone deciding this.
Seren had access to this section through her Ash Winter re-filing clearance, which was a temporary authorization that Ilyra had granted without fully understanding its scope. She used the access carefully — taking what she needed, returning what she took, leaving no indication in the official access logs that she had been looking at anything beyond the re-filing materials.
The Ash Winter medical intake records were, as she had expected, significantly less organized than the administrative records from the same period. Medical intake during an outbreak was triaged documentation — whoever was writing things down was also treating patients, which meant records were abbreviated, inconsistent, sometimes barely legible. She had developed a system for reading them: look for the fields that were always filled even in the worst conditions (name if known, date, condition at intake), ignore the fields that were often left blank (residence, family contact, follow-up), and focus on the margins, where harried medical staff sometimes wrote observations that did not fit into the standard fields.
The observation she had found two days ago was in the margin of a general intake log, not attached to a specific patient record but noted in a cluster of observations from the same week:
*Patient presenting with fragmented recall — cannot account for three days prior to intake. No physical cause identified. Noted in four other patients same week.*
Four other patients. The same week. No physical cause.
She had gone back to confirm the context: the week in question was the same week as the Ash Winter infrastructure inspection team's visit to the sub-level access points in Lower Fifth and Lower Ashfield. The patients with fragmented recall were all from the residential blocks nearest to the access points.
She sat with this in the auxiliary archive, the connection laid out in her ledger, and was careful about what she concluded from it.
Correlation was not causation. People lost memory during illness for many reasons. The proximity might be coincidence. The timing might be coincidence.
But it was there, and it was noted.
Alden arrived at the Ash Annex at the second bell with information from his network: the broken silver bell had been placed. An older resident of Lower Fifth, a woman who had been there for decades and remembered things, had confirmed seeing it in the Wren house many years ago. A nursing bell, she had called it — the kind used in Marked household birth ceremonies, recognizable by its specific form even to those who had never attended such a ceremony. Broken at the top, missing the upper arc.
Seren looked at her ledger. *Nursing bell, silver, upper arc missing. Wren house. Used in Marked birth ceremonies.*
She wrote it under the memory observation and looked at both.
In Crown Ring, in a corridor she had never seen and would not see, Maris Vaelor was standing outside a door.
The door was at the end of a secondary wing of the Vaelor residential complex — a wing that had not been used for family habitation in twenty-seven years, kept clean by the household staff as a matter of form but not furnished, not opened except for maintenance. At the end of this wing was a room that had been prepared for a child.
Maris had been past this door many times. She had always walked past it.
She stopped now.
The door was locked — not with a standard lock, but with a Vaultbinder seal, the kind that required a formal release to open. The seal had been placed twenty-seven years ago and had not been renewed or removed. It was still active. She could feel the slight resistance when she put her hand on the door panel — the specific quality of a seal's presence, something she had learned to recognize from years of living in a household where sealed documents and sealed rooms were part of the administrative landscape.
She stood with her hand against the door.
She was thirty-three years old. She had been six when she stood in a different corridor in this same complex and looked through a gap in the doorway and saw Nessa Rill carrying a bundle wrapped in cloth toward the servant's exit. She had not understood what she was seeing. She had been told, afterward, that there had been a birth — complicated, difficult, not discussed. She had been a child and she had accepted this.
She had been a child for a few years after that. Then she had grown up, and the questions had come, and she had answered them in the way she had learned: by finding other things to pay attention to, by doing the things that were in front of her, by telling herself she did not know enough to act.
The door was in front of her.
She had found the cloth token two weeks ago. She had not sent the note she had written. She had not destroyed it either. It was in her desk, in a drawer that she locked each morning when she left for the day, a habit she had developed only after writing the note.
She took her hand off the door and went back to her desk.
In the drawer, she opened the note and read it again: *Ash Winter Emergency Intake, Cycle 7. Kiểm tra hồ sơ trẻ sơ sinh không tên. Find the person who wrote the inventory note.*
She read it three times. Then she folded it, put it in her coat pocket, and went downstairs to arrange for it to be delivered — not through House Vaelor channels, not through any official Records channel. Through the informal delivery network that operated in Middle Ring for people who needed documents to move without appearing in any official transit log.
She did not know if it would reach the right person. She did not know if the right person would know what to do with it. She did not know what would happen if it reached someone wrong.
She sent it anyway.
