Mother Sable's house was at the end of a hẻm that did not appear on any official map of Lower Fifth.
This was not because it had been hidden. It was because it had been there longer than the maps, built before the ring-level administrative system had codified which streets were official and which were informal, and it had simply never been added to the documentation because no one with authority to add it had ever needed to go there for official reasons. The people who needed to go there found it by asking people who knew, which was the system that had always governed access to Mother Sable's assistance.
Alden had been there once as a child, though he did not remember it. He had been told this later, obliquely, without detail.
Seren had found it through the Underways network, which maintained the kind of information about the lower districts that did not appear in official Records.
Mother Sable was sitting outside on a wooden stool when they arrived, a bowl of tea in both hands, looking at the hẻm with the expression of someone who had been looking at it for a very long time. She was old in the specific way of people who had been old for longer than they were young — not fragile, just permanent, like something that had been worn to its essential form.
She looked at Seren first. Then at Alden. At Alden, her expression did not change, but something in her stillness changed — the quality of it, the specific kind of attention she was paying.
“I know what you're here for,” she said. “Sit down.”
There were no other chairs. They sat on the low stone step of the entrance.
Seren asked about the memory loss — the patients from Ash Winter, the week of the infrastructure inspection, the fragmented recall with no physical cause.
Mother Sable listened without interrupting. When Seren finished, she was quiet for a moment, looking at her tea.
“The Vault doesn't keep people inside with walls alone,” she said. “Walls can be climbed. Walls can be broken. What the Vault keeps people inside with is harder to break — it's the belief that the walls are necessary. The belief that what's outside is worse than what's inside.” She paused. “That belief has to be maintained. It's not natural. People are curious. People want to know what's beyond the edge of what they can see. The belief has to be renewed.”
“How?” Seren asked.
“The same way everything in this city is maintained. Names. Ritual. Things repeated often enough that they become memory. Things made memory often enough that they become true.” She looked up from her tea. “If you want to know whether the Vault has a mechanism for that kind of maintenance, the answer is: I don't know the specifics. I know the effect. I've been watching it for sixty years.”
Alden spoke for the first time. “The scar on my left shoulder.”
Mother Sable looked at him.
“You put it there,” he said. Not an accusation. A statement, carefully made.
“Your mother brought you to me,” she said. “You were a few days old. She didn't ask me what was under the scar. She asked me to cover it so you could live here without it being a problem.” She paused. “I did what she asked.”
“What was under it?” he said.
She looked at him for a long time — the specific attention of someone who had been thinking about how to answer this question for a while, possibly years.
“Something I hadn't seen before,” she said. “A mark that looked like a Vaultmark but wasn't. It didn't close. Vaultmarks close — that's their nature, the circuit completes, the form is sealed. This one didn't. The line stopped before it completed.” She looked at her tea again. “I covered it because your mother asked me to. I've thought about it since then more times than I can count. I've read everything I can find about marks — Vaultbinder theory, Ash Saint practice, the older texts that predate both. I've never found a precedent.”
“What does it do?” Seren asked.
“I don't know what it does,” Mother Sable said. “I know what it is, in the way I know what a door is without knowing where it leads.” She looked at Alden. “It's a mark that doesn't close. That's all I can tell you with certainty. What that means depends on questions I'm not in a position to answer.”
Seren looked at Alden. He was looking at his hands.
“Can it be uncovered?” he asked.
“The covering was always temporary,” Mother Sable said. “The kind that holds as long as it's not examined closely. I built it to last — it's lasted twenty-seven years, which is longer than I expected. But it was never permanent. If you wanted to remove it, I could do that.”
She said it without ceremony, without weight — the way she would have said she could repair a garment or grind a medicine. A practical question with a practical answer.
Alden was quiet for a long time.
“Not yet,” he said. “When we know more.”
Mother Sable nodded. “When you're ready,” she said. “I'll be here.”
She looked at Seren before they left — a long, assessing look.
“You're the one who reads the records,” she said.
“Ash Copyist,” Seren said. “Mortality records.”
“That's useful work,” Mother Sable said. “In a city that tries to erase people, someone who writes names correctly is doing something important.” She paused. “Be careful what you find. Not because finding it is wrong. Because what's true is not always what the systems around it are built to survive.”
They left her sitting with her tea in the hẻm that wasn't on any official map.
On the walk back through Lower Fifth, they did not talk about what she had said. There would be time for that. For now, they walked and let the information settle into its place among the other things they had gathered, the picture that was still incomplete but was becoming, slowly and with difficulty, visible.
In Crown Ring, at the same hour, a folded note was being delivered to the informal transit network that served Middle Ring's unofficial correspondence needs. The note would reach its destination — or it would not — within the next two days.
Maris Vaelor stood at the window of her study and looked at the street below and told herself she had done the right thing, and believed it, and waited to see what came next.
