The building was in the High Ring boundary zone, registered to a private trust — one of the administrative structures that Marked households used to hold property that they preferred not to have directly associated with their family name in the public records. Seren had looked it up before coming. She knew who owned the trust. She had not shared this information with anyone because the person who had sent the note had asked her to come alone, and she had decided to honor that request while also being clear-eyed about what it meant to meet alone with someone whose family name was at the center of everything she had been investigating.
The room on the third floor was accessed through an interior staircase that bypassed the building's main lobby. The door at the top was unlocked. Inside: two chairs, a small table, a window that looked onto an interior courtyard rather than the street. The room had the quality of spaces that were used occasionally and carefully maintained — clean, neutral, designed to be whatever was needed for a meeting that neither party wanted documented.
Maris Vaelor was already there.
She was standing when Seren came in, which meant she had been standing for some time — a choice rather than an oversight, the posture of someone who had decided not to settle into comfort before the conversation began. She was dressed without the House Vaelor markers she wore to official functions: no pin, no emblem, the kind of clothing that was well-made but not immediately identifiable as belonging to a specific household.
She looked at Seren with the direct quality Seren had observed at The Last Records — the quality of actually looking, not looking past.
“Thank you for coming,” she said.
“I read the note,” Seren said. She sat in the nearest chair. Maris, after a moment, sat in the other.
The conversation that followed had the quality of two people who were both careful with language navigating toward a subject that neither of them had named yet. Maris asked about the Ash Annex, about the re-filing project, about the scope of the Ash Winter documentation work. The questions were specific enough to be genuine and general enough to be safe — she was establishing what Seren knew before committing to what she would say.
Seren answered accurately and without elaboration. She had learned, from years of processing documentation, that the shape of what you withheld was as informative as what you offered.
After several minutes, Maris reached into the inner pocket of her coat and placed a small envelope on the table between them.
“I don't know how much you've found,” Maris said. “I know you found the inventory anomalies. I know you've been cross-referencing the Ash Winter records. I don't know how far back you've traced the thread.”
Seren looked at the envelope but did not pick it up.
“Far enough to know there's a thread,” she said.
Maris nodded. She looked at the envelope. “I found this in the House Vaelor archive three weeks ago. I had seen it before — years ago, as a child, in the hands of someone who was leaving the house at night. I didn't understand what I was seeing then. When I found it again, I understood more.” She paused. “I didn't destroy it. I didn't report it. I've been carrying it since then trying to decide what to do with it.”
“And now?”
“And now someone at the Ash Annex knows how to write three technical categories into an inventory report so that only a person looking for them would find them.” Maris looked up. “I was looking for them.”
Seren picked up the envelope.
The cloth inside was small — a square approximately the size of her palm, fine weave, white-silver in color. She had seen this type of fabric documented in Records before: the specific weave used in Marked birth ritual preparations, the material that wrapped the naming objects in Vaultbinder ceremonies. It was not the kind of fabric that ended up in informal contexts. It was the kind of fabric that was accounted for in gia phả records, because its use was ceremonial and therefore documented.
The House Vaelor seal on the corner had been scraped — not completely removed, but reduced to a partial impression, the kind of partial that was the result of insufficient time or insufficient commitment to the erasure.
“I was six years old,” Maris said. “I saw someone leaving with a bundle. I was told later there had been a birth that was complicated. I was a child and I accepted that.” She paused. “I stopped being a child a long time ago.”
“Why now?” Seren asked. “You've known for years that something happened. What changed?”
Maris looked at the cloth in Seren's hands. “I've been doing good things for a long time,” she said. “Useful things. Things that help people in small, permitted ways. And I've been telling myself that doing good things was enough — that it balanced whatever I was carrying. But you can't balance a specific weight with general goodness. The specific thing requires a specific response.” She paused. “I think I knew that for a long time and kept finding reasons not to act on it.”
Seren did not offer absolution. She was not in the position to offer it and did not think it would be useful if she were.
“What do you want from this meeting?” she asked.
“I want to give you what I have,” Maris said. “I can't do more than that. Not yet. If I move too openly, House Vaelor will know I know, and then I'll lose whatever position I still have to act from.” She paused. “I'm not asking you to trust me. I'm asking you to take what I'm giving you and do with it what I apparently haven't been able to do myself.”
Seren looked at the cloth for a moment longer. Then she folded the envelope carefully and put it in her inside pocket.
“I'll need more from you eventually,” she said. “Not now. But eventually, something that can be documented and attributed will be necessary.”
“I know,” Maris said. She said it without hesitation, which told Seren she had already thought about this and had already arrived at the same conclusion.
They left separately, five minutes apart. In the interior courtyard outside the window, the cycle light was at its mid-afternoon angle, flat and grey-white, the same light that reached the Ash Annex through its inadequate ventilation slats.
Seren walked back toward Middle Ring with the cloth token in her pocket and the shape of the thing she had been building for months resolving further into clarity. The thread was real. The person at the other end of it was someone she had known about since childhood without knowing she knew.
She went to find Alden.
