The storage facility was in the transitional zone between Middle Ring's administrative district and the older commercial buildings that had been built in the city's second expansion phase — the layer of construction that predated the current ring-level system and had been incorporated into it without being fully rebuilt. The building had multiple access points, most of them sealed by standard Records administrative locks that Alden could have opened without difficulty. The main entrance was sealed by something older.
The seal mechanism was embedded in the wall beside the door — a small plate of worked metal, the surface engraved with the interlocking pattern that Vaultbinder seals used. The pattern was worn, the edges softened by decades of exposure, which meant the seal had been placed and renewed multiple times over a long period without being removed. Active but aged. The kind of seal that was maintained by institutional habit rather than active attention.
Alden looked at it the way he looked at all lock mechanisms — assessing function, evaluating approach, mapping the variables. His hand moved toward the plate by the same reflex he used when examining any mechanism: the instinct to understand by contact.
He put his palm flat against the seal plate.
The seal opened.
Not gradually — not with the slow release of a mechanism responding to extended pressure or the specific sequence of an intentional unlock. Instantly, completely, the way a door opened when the person opening it had the correct authorization. The metal plate's engraving shifted, the locking elements retracted, and the door swung inward on a hinge that had been maintained well enough to move without sound.
Alden pulled his hand back.
He and Seren looked at the open door.
Then they looked at each other.
“I wasn't trying to open it,” he said.
“I know,” she said.
Neither of them moved for a moment. The open doorway showed a dark interior — the storage facility's main room, large and unlit, the shapes of shelved materials visible as the eye adjusted.
“The last time this happened,” she said, “it was the old door in the Underways. Before that, the naming ceremony bell. Before that, the checkpoint gate.” She paused. “Each time there's been a possible alternative explanation. This time —”
“This time I was the only one who touched it,” he said. “And I wasn't doing anything except looking at it.”
“Yes.”
They went inside because there was a reason they had come here and the door being open was not a reason to abandon it. The interior was what Merrit's description had suggested — a storage facility that had been used intermittently over years, the materials accumulated in overlapping layers that reflected different periods of use. Along the back wall, behind a row of standard crates, Seren found what she had come for: a set of bound ledgers with the specific cover markings of the Records transit registry from the period they were investigating.
She worked through the ledgers while Alden watched the entrance and the space, his attention divided between the materials she was reading and the building's other access points. She had learned to work comfortably with him standing guard in a way she did not have to think about — his presence meant she could focus on the documents without the part of her attention that would otherwise have been monitoring for approach vectors.
The ledgers confirmed what Merrit had indicated: there had been transit movements through this facility that did not appear in the official registry. People whose Records mortality entries predated their actual deaths, their names appearing in transit logs that post-dated their official deaths by months or years.
She copied the relevant entries into her personal ledger and replaced the bound volumes.
On the way out, Alden stopped at the door.
He put his hand on the seal plate again — deliberately this time, not by reflex. He was testing. She watched him.
The seal opened.
He removed his hand. The door swung slowly closed, the mechanism resetting.
He did it again. Open. Again: closed.
His left shoulder was warm — not painful, just warm, the way it got when the mark beneath the old scar location was responding to something in the environment. Except there was no scar anymore. Just the mark, visible now after Mother Sable's work, present in a way it had always been present but was now no longer hidden.
“Alden,” she said.
He looked at her. His expression was the one she had learned to read as: I'm processing this and I need a moment before I can talk about it.
She gave him the moment.
Then: “We need to go to Mother Sable.”
“I know.”
“Not to ask her more questions. To figure out what this means and what we do about it.”
“I know,” he said again. He looked at the closed door one more time. Then he turned and moved toward the exit, and she followed, and neither of them spoke again until they were back in the street and moving away from the facility in the direction of Lower Rings.
