The patrol had been unexpected — an increase in the Vaultbinder associate presence in the Middle Ring transition zone that neither of them had been warned about through the network, which meant it had been deployed quickly rather than through standard scheduling. The reason for the deployment was, in retrospect, obvious: the seal on the storage facility's main entrance had logged the unauthorized access, and a logged unauthorized access triggered an automatic patrol deployment in the surrounding area.
They had been two streets from the facility when Alden's attention shifted in the specific way it shifted when he was reading the environment and finding something wrong. She had followed his lead immediately, because following his environmental reads without asking for justification was something she had learned to do in the Underways and had been grateful for every time.
The route he chose took them upward — through a residential building's maintenance access, across two rooftops, through a section of the Middle Ring that moved over rather than through the street-level areas where the patrol was concentrating. She had done this kind of movement before, with him, in situations that had required speed over comfort. Her body knew the mechanics of it: low profile, follow his lead on load-bearing surfaces, watch where his feet go first.
The fourth rooftop crossing had a gap.
Not large — two meters, approximately, over a service alley that was dark and narrow. She had crossed larger gaps in the Underways with him guiding her through. But the surface they were landing on was partially deteriorated, she could see that from here, and the approach angle was awkward because of the parapet on the near side.
Alden assessed it in two seconds. He crossed — a clean, practiced movement, weight transferred smoothly, landing with enough bend to absorb impact without stress on the damaged surface. He turned and extended his hand.
She looked at his hand.
The thought was not a full thought — it was a fragment, the compressed version that arrived before the extended version had time to form: *you don't know everything about where this leads.* Cassian's voice, but also her own, the part of her that had been doing this work for months and understood that trust was a risk assessment, not a feeling.
She crossed without taking his hand.
The landing was clean enough. She was steady on the surface. She was fine.
Alden's hand was still extended for the half-second it took him to register that she had crossed without it. Then he lowered it.
They kept moving, because the patrol was below them and this was not the time to stop.
The next three rooftop crossings did not require assistance. She made them without incident. He led and she followed and the mechanics of their movement together were the same as they always were, except that the space between them was a fractional degree different — not large enough to affect function, present enough to feel.
They lost the patrol associates at a transition into the old section of Middle Ring where the rooftop configurations became irregular enough that anyone following without local knowledge would have to slow to navigate. Alden knew this section. He had known it since childhood. He moved through the irregularity with the fluency of someone for whom it was not irregular at all.
In the dark of a setback space between two taller structures — a pocket of shadow where they could pause without being visible from the street — they stopped.
Alden checked the sightlines in the automatic way he always checked sightlines. Then he looked at her.
He did not ask. This was the notable thing — he did not ask why she had crossed without taking his hand, did not ask if something was wrong, did not ask for an explanation or an accounting. He looked at her with the specific quality of attention he used when he had noticed something and had decided to give her the space to bring it forward herself if she chose to.
She was aware of the deliberateness of this. She was aware that it was, in its way, an answer to the question she had not fully acknowledged she was asking — the question about whether the person she was working with was the person she thought he was.
She did not say this.
“Are you injured?” he said. The practical question, the one that covered the most ground with the least exposure.
“No.”
He nodded. He looked out at the street below them, checking the patrol activity from the shadow of the setback space. The associates were moving away — the deployment had covered the area and found nothing, the way deployments usually concluded when the unauthorized access had not been followed by further detectable activity.
Seren stood in the shadow and thought about Cassian's words in the tea room and about the cloth token in her pocket and about the mark on Alden's left shoulder that she had watched appear when Mother Sable removed the covering. The mark that opened things. The mark that no one, including the person who carried it, fully understood.
She thought about trust as a risk assessment versus trust as a feeling, and about the difficulty of maintaining that distinction when the person you were assessing was someone you had been navigating with, in the dark, for months.
“Patrol has cleared,” Alden said, quietly. “We can move.”
They moved.
The rest of the route back was uneventful. In the Lower Ring access corridor, they separated — him toward the Underways, her toward The Last Records. The separation was the same as every other separation at the end of a working transit. The goodbye was the same nod, the same understood timing for the next contact.
She walked back toward the Records building and thought about the gap she had crossed without taking his hand, and about the look on his face when he lowered it, and about the fact that she could not tell, even now, whether what she had done was correct caution or something she would regret.
