The report was good.
Do-yoon had read it twice the previous afternoon and once more this morning, and his assessment had not changed. It was technically rigorous without being inaccessible, structured with the logic of someone who understood not just the data but the reasoning that produced it, and it contained, in the section on consumer sensory thresholds, a sentence that he had underlined without fully deciding why:
*The people who grew up with it know what it's supposed to be. A deviation that reads as acceptable to someone tasting it for the first time reads as wrong to someone who's eaten it their whole life.*
This was not the language of a standard R&D report. Standard R&D reports used phrases like *target consumer familiarity profiles* and *deviation tolerance thresholds by demographic segment.* What this sentence said was simpler and, in his considered opinion, more accurate: that knowledge accumulated through experience was a different kind of knowledge than knowledge acquired through evaluation, and that the difference mattered.
He had heard something like this recently. He was certain of it. The context wouldn't surface — it sat at the edge of his recall like a word he knew but couldn't place — and the inability to locate it was mildly irritating in the specific way that incomplete pattern recognition was always mildly irritating.
He set the report down and pressed the intercom.
"Jae-hyuk."
"Yes."
"Han Seo-yeon, Product Development R&D. Pull her employee profile and send it to my secondary screen."
A brief pause — the kind Jae-hyuk deployed when he was noting something without commenting on it. "Of course."
The file appeared on his secondary monitor two minutes later. Do-yoon opened it.
Han Seo-yeon. Twenty-seven. Two years and seven months at Daejin Foods, hired directly from university into the R&D track. Performance evaluations: consistently high on technical assessment, consistently average on visibility metrics — the kind of pattern that appeared when someone did the work well and did not particularly concern themselves with being seen doing it. One internal commendation from Team Leader Park, filed fourteen months ago, for identifying a batch contamination issue before it reached production.
The photograph was the standard employee ID type: taken at the HR desk on arrival day, slightly low angle, unflattering lighting, the subject looking at the camera with the expression of someone who had been asked to look natural and had responded by looking cautious instead. Hair pulled back. Glasses.
Do-yoon looked at the photograph for a moment.
Familiar name. Face that didn't attach to anything in his memory with any certainty. He closed the file, made a note on the consumer trial timeline, and moved to the next item in his morning queue.
The sentence from the report stayed underlined on his desk.
---
On the seventh floor, Oh Dasom had a talent for delivering information casually that was not, in any meaningful sense, casual.
"I heard the CEO pulled profiles on some of the people who presented yesterday," she said, not looking up from her screen, at approximately the same tone she used to mention that the vending machine on three had been restocked. "Apparently it's something he does — wants to know who's behind the work, not just the work itself."
Seo-yeon continued typing. "Where did you hear that?"
"Minji from HR mentioned it. Apparently his assistant put in requests for three profiles. Yours was one of them."
Seo-yeon typed a period at the end of a sentence that did not need a period yet and then corrected it.
"Makes sense," she said. "New leadership, getting to know the team."
"Right," Dasom said, in the tone of someone who found this explanation perfectly reasonable and was therefore done discussing it.
Seo-yeon waited until Dasom had returned fully to her screen, then opened the company intranet in a separate tab and navigated to her own employee profile.
The photograph loaded.
She looked at it for a measured moment. It was objectively not a good photograph — the angle was low, the lighting was the flat institutional white of the HR department's overhead fixtures, and she had been asked to remove her glasses for the shot but had forgotten to, so she was wearing them, which she rarely did at work, which meant the version of her in this photograph looked meaningfully different from the version of her that appeared in any other context.
She had complained about this photograph to Chae-rin approximately six months after starting at Daejin. Chae-rin had told her to get it retaken. She had not gotten it retaken because it had not seemed worth the administrative effort.
It now seemed like the most prescient decision she had made in two and a half years of employment.
She closed the tab and went back to the formula document.
*The name is familiar,* he had texted. *I can't place it.*
A name without a face that matched. A face he had seen — briefly, across a conference table, with different hair and glasses she didn't usually wear — that hadn't resolved into anything he recognized. Two data points that should have connected and hadn't.
For now.
She wrote: *Revised ginger timing protocol confirmed effective across three independent batches. Recommend proceeding to consumer trial phase.* Read it back. It was accurate. She saved the document and opened the next one.

The weekly R&D department meeting was scheduled for three o'clock, and Do-yoon had added it to his calendar not because the weekly R&D meeting required CEO attendance — it didn't, under normal circumstances, and the department heads he had spoken to in his first week had uniformly communicated, with varying degrees of diplomatic indirection, that they found the rhythm of their team meetings easier without an executive presence — but because he had committed to attending at least one routine meeting per department in his first month.
The reasoning was specific. Formal reviews were performances. Everyone in a formal review was presenting a version of their work that had been selected and organized for the purpose of presentation. That version was useful, but it was a curated version, and curation always involved choices about what to include and what to leave out, and the choices told you something, but not everything.
What happened when no one was performing told you more.
He arrived two minutes before the meeting started and took a chair along the side wall rather than at the head of the table. Team Leader Park's meeting, Team Leader Park's table. He was here to observe, not to chair. He set his tablet on his knee, reviewed the agenda that had been circulated that morning, and let the room fill in around him without making it a thing that people needed to orient around.
Twelve people. The full R&D team. He noted their arrangement — who sat where relative to whom, the small geography of a team that had established its own internal topology over time — without making it obvious that he was noting it. He had been doing this long enough that the observation had become background process: continuous, automatic, not requiring conscious allocation.
He did not look at the back half of the room directly.
He was aware of it in the way he was aware of the procurement sign-off bottleneck he had read about that morning and had already decided to address: as a specific, located thing that was present and that he knew the position of without needing to keep checking.
---
Seo-yeon had chosen her seat by the same logic she chose most things at Daejin when the situation involved managing visibility: last row, center, the position that was present without being prominent. If called upon, she was here. If not called upon, she was part of the room.
Do-yoon was sitting along the side wall.
She had registered this when she walked in and had since been managing the awareness of it with the same sustained effort she applied to not thinking about something she was actively not thinking about, which was, by definition, not working.
The meeting proceeded normally. Park reviewed the weekly project status updates, the team leads reported their numbers, someone asked a question about the export timeline that led to a brief tangent about packaging specifications. Standard.
Do-yoon did not speak for the first forty minutes. He took notes occasionally, asked one clarifying question about the Q4 production schedule that was precise and efficiently answered, and otherwise was simply present in the particular quality of stillness she had come to associate with him — not passive, not disengaged, but the kind of contained attention that processed more than it showed.
She did not look at him.
He did not look at her.
The meeting reached the final agenda item, and Park asked if there were questions before they closed.
Silence. Chairs shifting. The particular collective movement of a room that was ready to conclude.
"One thing," Do-yoon said.
The room resettled.
"The version 4.3 marinade report — the consumer trial authorization. What's the current timeline to first-phase results?"
Team Leader Park turned, by the reflex of someone who had spent two years routing these questions to the correct source, and looked at Seo-yeon.
Every person in the room followed Park's gaze.
Seo-yeon looked at the front of the room — at Team Leader Park, at the whiteboard, at the space between them that represented the direction of a normal answer — and spoke.
"First-phase consumer panel is scheduled for three weeks from Thursday, pending procurement sign-off on the trial batch materials. If sign-off comes through by end of this week, that timeline holds. Results analysis would follow approximately ten days after the panel date."
"What's the sign-off bottleneck?"
"Sourcing approval for the apple cider vinegar volume. The quantity for the trial batch is above the standard spot-purchase threshold, so it needs a secondary authorization."
"Who holds that authorization?"
"Procurement manager, third floor."
"I'll flag it with them directly. Expect sign-off by Wednesday."
"Thank you."
The exchange had taken approximately forty-five seconds. At no point had Do-yoon looked in her direction. At no point had she looked in his. They had conducted an entirely functional professional interaction through the medium of looking at different points in the same room, like two people who had independently decided to navigate by the same landmark without acknowledging that they were doing so.
Park closed the meeting. The room began to move.
Seo-yeon gathered her notebook and stood with the unhurried efficiency of someone who had timed the exit to coincide with the middle of the crowd — present enough to be normal, early enough to avoid the door clustering.
She was almost in the corridor when she heard her name.
"Seo-yeon."
She turned. It was Jae-hyuk, not Do-yoon — who was, she noted in the peripheral sweep that she was not performing, still in conversation with Team Leader Park at the front of the room.
"CEO wants to receive the consumer trial progress report directly when first-phase results are available," Jae-hyuk said. "Not through the standard department chain. I'll send you the submission format."
Seo-yeon looked at him. Jae-hyuk's expression conveyed the information it was conveying and no supplementary commentary whatsoever.
"Understood," she said. "Thank you."
She walked out.
In the stairwell — she had started taking the stairs to avoid the specific mathematics of elevator timing on this floor — she stopped on the landing between seven and six and stood for a moment with her notebook held against her chest and the particular quality of stillness that came from processing several things simultaneously.
A direct reporting line. Her name, now attached to a project he was actively tracking. Her voice, in a meeting room, answering his questions, while he sat twelve feet away and neither of them acknowledged any other context in which they had ever spoken.
The stairwell was quiet. Someone's door opened and closed two floors below.
She went back to her desk and worked until six.
---
Her mother was sitting up in bed when Seo-yeon arrived, which was new — last week she had mostly been reclined, the fatigue from the treatment cycle making upright sitting more effortful than it was worth. The week before that, there had been three days when she had not wanted the lights on.
Sitting up, with the bedside lamp on, reading a magazine that she set aside when Seo-yeon came through the door: this was better. Measurably, specifically better.
"You look better," Seo-yeon said.
"I feel somewhat better," her mother said, with the careful calibration of someone who had learned, over the past year, not to overclaim improvement because overclaiming led to the specific kind of disappointment that was worse than no expectation at all. "The nausea has been less the last two days. Dr. Lim said that's consistent with the cycle stage."
"That's good."
"Sit. You look like you've been thinking hard about something all day."
Seo-yeon sat in the chair beside the bed — the chair she had long since memorized the specific discomfort of, the armrest that hit at exactly the wrong height, the way the seat cushion had compressed unevenly over months of use. She had considered bringing a better chair from home and had not, because bringing a better chair would be an acknowledgment that she expected to be sitting in this room often enough to warrant the investment in comfort, and she was not ready to make that acknowledgment out loud.
"Work," Seo-yeon said. "New CEO started this week. He's been meeting with each department. It's been a busy few days."
Her mother looked at her with the expression she had first deployed when Seo-yeon was approximately eight and had claimed that a broken kitchen bowl had fallen on its own. It was the expression of someone who knew there was more to a story and was assessing the cost-benefit of pursuing it.
She looked at Seo-yeon with this expression for a measured moment.
Then she picked her magazine back up and set it in her lap. "Eat something when you get home. You forget when you're preoccupied."
"I ate today."
"At what time?"
A pause. "Lunch was at one."
"It's eight fifteen."
"I had coffee at four."
"That's not eating."
Seo-yeon looked at her mother's hands resting on the magazine — the cover of it bright and incongruous against the pale hospital blanket. Her mother's hands had changed over the past year in ways that Seo-yeon registered every visit and could not get used to: thinner, the skin carrying a new fragility, the veins more visible than they had been. But the gesture of them, the particular still way she held things — the way she had held wooden spoons, prep bowls, the telephone receiver, everything throughout Seo-yeon's entire life — was unchanged. Completely, persistently unchanged.
*This,* she thought, with the sudden plainness of something that didn't need elaboration. *This is what the rest of it is for.*
She stayed until eight forty, helped her mother settle for the night, took the last express train, and was home before ten.
---
The message came at ten fifty-two.
*Are you free this weekend? My grandfather would like to have dinner. Family only — just him, and perhaps my cousin. Nothing formal.*
Seo-yeon read it sitting on her bed with her knees pulled up and her phone balanced on them, still in her work clothes because she had sat down to take her shoes off and gotten distracted by the act of staring at the middle distance.
Family dinner.
Not a scheduled date in a restaurant selected for presentation. Not a structured meeting with a clear beginning and end. A dinner at a family residence, with the man who had written four paragraphs by hand about his grandson's happiness and enclosed a thirty-year-old wedding photograph, who had laughed on the phone when Do-yoon said he wanted to meet her again — the first unguarded sound she had heard him make, transmitted secondhand, and somehow more precise for that.
And a cousin. Who would presumably be at this dinner. Looking at her.
Seo-yeon thought about the checklist, which now existed in a state of significant theoretical compromise, and about the consumer trial report that was going directly to the CEO's desk, and about the way Do-yoon had not looked at her in the meeting room today while somehow making her aware at every point that he knew she was there.
She thought about her mother sitting up in bed for the first time in a week, and about the treatment cycle that still had months to run, and about the number Dr. Lim had quoted that she did not let herself think about before seven in the morning.
She typed: *This weekend works. What time should I arrive?*
Sent it before the part of her brain that managed risk assessment could file an objection.
Put the phone on the nightstand.
Lay back on the bed still in her work clothes and looked at the ceiling, which had, over the past two weeks, become the primary surface she used for processing information she did not have a better container for. It was a good ceiling for this — plain, white, unhelpfully neutral, offering no input whatsoever.
"Five points minimum," she said, out loud, to the ceiling. "The new checklist needs at least five new points. Probably six. Possibly seven if the family dinner involves more than two other people who might ask questions I don't know the answers to."
The ceiling maintained its position.
She thought, with the methodical honesty she tried to apply to problems when she was tired enough that the usual defenses were running below capacity, about the shape of what she had agreed to. A family dinner. Cha Do-yoon's grandfather, who had written about happiness and enclosed a photograph. A cousin, whose relationship to the situation she didn't yet understand. A house she had never been to, presenting as a person she wasn't, to people who were beginning, by all evidence, to like the version of her they had been introduced to.
And on Monday morning she would go back to the seventh floor and write a consumer trial report that would be submitted directly to the CEO's desk. Who would read it under the name Han Seo-yeon. Who would read it and not know — yet — that Han Seo-yeon and the woman coming to his grandfather's house on Saturday were the same person.
Yet.
Her phone lit up on the nightstand: *Saturday at six. I'll send the address.*
And then, after a pause long enough that she had almost picked the phone up to check if the conversation had ended:
*Thank you.*
Seo-yeon looked at those two words for longer than two words warranted. He had said thank you at the end of the meeting today — directed across a conference table at someone he knew as a name on a report. And now here, directed through a phone screen at someone he knew as Chae-rin.
Two thank-yous. Same person on the receiving end. Neither version of her knowing quite what to do with either of them.
She put the phone down and closed her eyes.
The ceiling offered no useful guidance, as expected.
She was going to need a longer list.
You've reached the end of this chapter
The report was good.
Do-yoon had read it twice the previous afternoon and once more this morning, and his assessment had not changed. It was technically rigorous without being inaccessible, structured with the logic of someone who understood not just the data but the reasoning that produced it, and it contained, in the section on consumer sensory thresholds, a sentence that he had underlined without fully deciding why:
