The checklist existed only in Seo-yeon's head, which she had decided was safer than writing it down.
Writing it down would make it a document. Documents could be found. And a document titled something like *Operational Guidelines for Not Being Recognized by the CEO I Am Secretly Fake-Dating* was not a thing she wanted to exist in any physical or digital form, on any device, backed up to any cloud service, recoverable by any IT department conducting any routine audit.
So it lived in her head, reviewed every morning with the same methodical attention she gave the tasting notes, and it had four items:
One: avoid the fourteenth floor entirely. The executive suite, the CEO's office, the conference room where the senior leadership team convened — all of it, completely, without exception. The seventh floor was her floor. She had spent two and a half years building a life on the seventh floor. She had no operational reason to go anywhere else, and she intended to keep it that way.
Two: do not attend any all-company events where the CEO would be present and close enough to have a conversation. The inauguration ceremony had been unavoidable and had, by reasonable assessment, gone fine — he hadn't recognized her, she had been one face in a crowd of four hundred, and she had positioned herself near the back and left before the reception portion. Future events would be managed with the same approach, or avoided entirely.
Three: do not speak at length in any meeting where there was any possibility of him being present. Nod when appropriate. Take notes. Provide written summaries afterward if required. Exit efficiently and without drawing attention. She was good at not drawing attention. It had been, for most of her career at Daejin, an accidental specialty.
Four: hair up. She had worn her hair down at both the dinner and the walk in Insadong, because Chae-rin wore her hair down and it had seemed like a reasonable visual point of differentiation. At Daejin, from this point forward: hair up, always. Glasses when possible. The dark blazer only for formal occasions that required it, because wearing it every day would itself become conspicuous.
This was, she had assessed over the course of Sunday afternoon while ostensibly reviewing formula notes, a solid and executable plan. The company had four hundred and twelve employees across seven floors. The new CEO, however thorough, could not reasonably interact with all of them in his first week, and she was specifically not the kind of employee who surfaced on anyone's senior leadership radar without a concrete and traceable reason.
She tasted jar number three, noted the slight over-reduction, recommended a shorter final simmer, and moved to jar four with the quiet confidence of someone who had thought the problem through and arrived at a workable solution.
Her phone showed seven forty-two. Outside the cafeteria window, the October sky was doing its usual noncommittal grey.
She packed up the jars and went upstairs, the checklist running clean in the back of her mind like a background process she had set and trusted to execute.

At eight oh five, Team Leader Park walked into the department with the particular energy of a man who had received information that had reorganized his morning.
"Listen up," he said, before he had fully cleared the doorway. "Schedule change. The CEO wants a preliminary review of active projects today — not end of month, today. Two o'clock, fourteenth floor. Each department sends one representative with a project summary. Fifteen minutes per team."
The room absorbed this with the collective intake of breath that accompanied unexpected deadline compression.
"Who's going from us?" Oh Dasom asked.
Team Leader Park scanned the room with the efficiency of a man who had already decided and was verifying his decision against the available options. His gaze moved past two junior researchers, paused briefly on Oh Dasom, and settled on Seo-yeon.
"Seo-yeon. You're on the sauce reformulation and the export dipping sauce project. You know the technical depth better than anyone. Prepare a summary — both projects, key findings, current status, next steps. You have —" he checked his watch — "about five and a half hours."
Seo-yeon looked at him.
"I can prepare the materials," she said carefully, "but Dasom has been involved in both projects and the exposure would be useful for her development. She could present with my notes as —"
"Dasom's been here eight months," Team Leader Park said, not unkindly. "The CEO is going to ask technical questions. I need someone who can answer them without reading from a sheet." He was already moving toward his office. "Hair up, professional attire. You're representing the department."
The door closed.
Seo-yeon sat at her desk and looked at her laptop screen, which was showing the half-finished report she had been planning to work on this morning.
Oh Dasom leaned over from the adjacent desk. "Are you okay? You look like you just found out something bad."
"I'm fine," Seo-yeon said. "Just recalibrating."
She opened a new document and began outlining the presentation.
In a separate and concurrent process, she revised the checklist. Item two had been partially compromised by the inauguration ceremony. Item one was about to be directly violated. Items three and four remained actionable.
Hair up. Glasses. The dark blazer she kept in the bottom drawer of her desk for occasions that required looking more composed than she felt. Fifteen minutes of presentation time. Technical questions answered efficiently and without elaboration. Exit.
She could do this.
She looked at the document, at the project data she knew better than she knew most things in her life, and began to write.
---
The fourteenth floor had a different quality of air than the seventh.
This was not a thing Seo-yeon could have explained scientifically, and she was aware it was probably not a real phenomenon — the building's HVAC system did not differentiate by floor, the temperature was regulated to the same standard throughout, the ceiling height was within normal variance. But there was something about the quality of the quiet up here, the way the thick carpet absorbed footsteps entirely, the restrained arrangement of the furniture in the waiting area outside the main conference room, that communicated a specific and deliberate message about what kind of work happened on this floor and who was considered important enough to do it.
The seventh floor communicated: practical. The fourteenth communicated: consequential. Seo-yeon noted this with the analytical part of her brain and told the rest of her brain to focus.
She sat in the row of chairs along the wall with the representatives from four other departments — Marketing, Sales, Operations, Strategy — and read through her notes for the third time. Not because she needed to. Because having something to look at meant she did not have to make conversation with the Operations representative beside her, who had introduced himself twice and seemed to feel that this constituted the foundation of a working relationship.
Version 4.3 of the marinade sauce: ginger timing corrected from initial reduction to final fifteen minutes, apple cider vinegar substituted for white, finishing salt protocol revised to fine-grain. Sensory evaluation scores up twelve percent from 4.1. Production trial authorization pending sign-off.
Export dipping sauce reformulation: traditional flavor profile maintained within target market sodium guidelines, proprietary reduction method for umami depth without added MSG, texture stability confirmed across refrigerated, room temperature, and heated application scenarios. Packaging compatibility in final testing phase.
She knew this material the way she knew her mother's kitchen — not by memorization but by something deeper than that, by the accumulated presence of having worked with it through enough iterations that it had become part of how she thought. She could reconstruct the logic of every decision in every version from memory, including the dead ends, including the batch that had gone wrong in week three because someone had mislabeled the gochugaru and she hadn't caught it until the fourth tasting.
The conference room door opened. The Marketing representative came out looking faintly pleased with herself. Min Jae-hyuk followed, checked the printed list in his hand, and looked along the row of waiting people.
"Product Development," he said.
Seo-yeon stood, smoothed the front of her blazer once, picked up her folder, and walked through the door with the measured pace of someone who was not, in any way, about to do something she was anxious about.
---
The conference room on the fourteenth floor had one long table, floor-to-ceiling windows along the south wall, and Cha Do-yoon sitting at the far end of it.
He was reading — not the document from the previous presentation, but something else, a separate file, the kind of parallel-processing that Seo-yeon recognized from people who treated meetings as opportunities to advance multiple workstreams simultaneously. There were two other people at the table: a senior manager she recognized from the company directory as being from Strategy, and a woman with a tablet who was taking notes.
Seo-yeon walked to the near end of the table and set her folder down.
Do-yoon finished the paragraph he was reading, set the document aside, and looked up.
For exactly one second — the interval between his gaze reaching her and his expression settling into the composed, neutral attention of a CEO beginning a departmental review — she watched his face and saw nothing she could read with certainty. Not recognition. Not non-recognition. Simply the brief recalibration of a man shifting his focus from one thing to another.
She looked at her folder.
"Product Development," she said. "I'm here to cover the sauce reformulation and export dipping sauce projects."
"Go ahead," Do-yoon said.
She went ahead.
The presentation took six minutes rather than fifteen, because she had organized it the way she organized everything — stripped to what was essential, with the reasoning embedded in the structure rather than stated separately. Version 4.3 status, evaluation scores, production trial readiness. Export sauce timeline, regulatory compliance status, outstanding items.
Do-yoon listened without interrupting. The Strategy manager made a note at the revenue projection. The woman with the tablet typed continuously.
When Seo-yeon finished, there was a brief pause.
"The ginger ratio correction in version 4.3," Do-yoon said. "What was the original deviation and how was it identified?"
This was not a question from the briefing materials. This was a question from someone who had read the technical appendix.
"The original formulation used a fixed weight ratio from the previous version," Seo-yeon said. "The deviation was identified through sensory evaluation — specifically, the finish was reading as bitter under heat, which suggested the volatile compounds in the ginger were being released at the wrong stage of the reduction. The correction was to move the ginger addition to the final fifteen minutes rather than the beginning."
"At what temperature?"
"Eighty-two degrees Celsius. Below the threshold where the compounds degrade before they can integrate into the base."
"And the alternative you considered before the timing adjustment?"
"Reducing the quantity rather than the timing. We ran both in parallel. The timing adjustment produced better flavor integration at the same intensity level — reducing quantity gave us cleaner finish but flatter mid-palate."
Do-yoon looked at her for a moment. The Strategy manager had stopped writing and was looking between them with the expression of someone watching a conversation he had not expected.
"The export dipping sauce," Do-yoon said. "Sodium reduction methodology."
Seo-yeon answered. He asked a follow-up. She answered that. He asked another, and another, and at some point she became aware that she had stopped thinking about the room and the floor and the folder and was simply talking about the work, because the work was what she knew and the questions were good questions, specific and technically grounded, the kind that could only come from someone who had read carefully and thought about what they read.
Five exchanges in, she heard herself say: "The conventional approach would have been to use potassium chloride as a partial sodium substitute, which is standard in this category. We didn't, because potassium chloride has a metallic aftertaste that's more detectable in the flavor profile of fermented bases than in processed foods. The sensory panel caught it at concentrations most formulators consider acceptable. Our threshold turned out to be lower than industry standard."
"Why lower?"
"Because the people who eat this sauce are paying attention to how it tastes," she said. "It's a traditional product. The people who grew up with it know what it's supposed to be. A deviation that reads as acceptable to someone tasting it for the first time reads as wrong to someone who's eaten it their whole life."
The room was quiet.
Team Leader Park, she remembered distantly, was going to be very confused by whatever Jae-hyuk reported back to him about this meeting.
Do-yoon looked at her with the quality of attention she had been navigating around for the past two weeks, and this time there was nowhere to redirect it. This was a conference room with one table and no ceramics displays and no street crowds and no borrowed performance to retreat into. There was only the work and the question and the answer she had just given, which had come entirely from herself.
She held his gaze and did not look away.
"The sensory threshold documentation," Do-yoon said. "Is it in the project file?"
"Yes. Section four, appendix B."
"I'll review it." He made a note on the paper in front of him — the first note he had made in the entire meeting. "Anything else on the current projects?"
"Nothing that isn't in the written summary."
"Then that's all. Thank you."
Seo-yeon collected her folder, said the appropriate closing words, and walked out of the conference room at a pace that was professionally unhurried and took every available unit of self-control to maintain.
---
Jae-hyuk was in the corridor, updating the schedule on his tablet.
"CEO asked to retain the written summary," he said as she passed. "If you have the file —"
"Here." She handed him the folder without stopping. "The digital version is on the shared drive under R&D Q4 active projects."
"Thank you."
She made it to the elevator, pressed the button, waited the eleven seconds it took to arrive, and stepped in.
The doors closed.
She put her back against the elevator wall and breathed, slowly and deliberately, through the descent from fourteen to seven.
*He didn't recognize you,* she told herself. *He asked technical questions because he's the kind of person who asks technical questions. That's all. It had nothing to do with anything else.*
The elevator reached seven. The doors opened.
She stepped out into the familiar corridor — the slightly scuffed linoleum, the smell of the test kitchen at the end of the hall, the sound of the centrifuge running in Lab B — and felt her shoulders drop approximately two centimeters.
Fine. It was fine. She had presented, answered the questions, and left. The plan had held. The hair and the glasses and the blazer had done their job.
Her phone buzzed.
She looked at it.
A message from Do-yoon's number — the one she had saved under a name that was not his name, because having *Cha Do-yoon CEO* appear on her lock screen at work felt like the kind of thing that would require explanations she did not have.
*The 4.3 report — the name on the cover sheet. Han Seo-yeon, R&D. Who is she?*
Seo-yeon stopped walking in the middle of the corridor.
A junior researcher from Lab A walked past and said good afternoon. She said good afternoon back. She looked at her phone.
He had looked at the cover sheet. Of course he had — he had asked for the file, Jae-hyuk had handed it over, and he was exactly the kind of person who read every name on every document he was given.
Han Seo-yeon, R&D, seventh floor.
She typed back, as Chae-rin: *Why are you asking?*
She watched the screen. Thirty seconds passed.
*The name is familiar. I can't place it.*
Seo-yeon read this sentence twice.
*Familiar.* Not recognized. Not placed. Familiar in the way that something sits at the edge of a thought without fully resolving — the way a flavor registered as known before the memory attached to it surfaced.
She typed: *I don't think I know anyone by that name. Why?*
Another pause. Longer this time.
*The report was good. I wanted to know who wrote it.*
Seo-yeon stood in the corridor of the seventh floor, outside Lab B, with the centrifuge running somewhere behind the wall, and looked at that sentence for what was probably too long.
*The report was good. I wanted to know who wrote it.*
She typed back: *Just someone from the R&D team, I'd imagine.*
Sent it. Put the phone in her pocket. Walked back to her desk.
Oh Dasom looked up as she sat down. "How did it go?"
"Fine," Seo-yeon said. "Technical questions. Standard review."
"You were up there for almost thirty minutes. The Marketing rep was back in twenty."
"The questions were specific."
Dasom tilted her head. "Is that good or bad?"
Seo-yeon opened her laptop and pulled up the formula document she had been working on before the morning had reorganized itself around a problem she did not yet know how to solve.
"I'll let you know," she said, "once I figure that out."
She stared at the screen.
Han Seo-yeon, R&D, seventh floor. A name that was familiar. A report that was good. A man who, from two floors below him on the organizational chart and at the complete opposite end of a conference table, had just spent twenty-five minutes asking her the kind of questions that were only possible if you were paying complete attention.
Two worlds. One building. One name he now knew and hadn't yet connected to the other context in which he knew her face.
She thought about the four items on her mental checklist, and specifically about the speed at which item one had been rendered irrelevant.
She was going to need a longer list.
You've reached the end of this chapter
The checklist existed only in Seo-yeon's head, which she had decided was safer than writing it down.
