The summer episode won the award.
She found out on a Wednesday morning, between intake processing, when Nao texted: It won. Regional personal narrative. Itsuki is being very calm about it.
She put the phone down. Continued processing. Picked it up again.
She texted: Good.
Nao: That's it? Just good?
She: What else should I say?
Nao: Ko.
She: He was going to win. The episode was right.
Nao: I know that. I'm saying: it's a big deal.
She: I know it's a big deal. And he was going to win. Both things are true.
Nao sent a single period, which was his way of conceding the point.
Through the hatchway, mid-morning: Nao told you.
She: He did.
He: I was going to tell you myself.
She: I know.
He: I'm still processing.
She: Take your time.
He: It's good. I think it's good.
She: It is good.
He: I'm working on believing that.
She: Good work takes longer than bad work to believe in. That's backwards from what it should be but it's true.
A pause. Then: Yes. That's accurate.
She: Let yourself believe it. You made something true and it was recognized. Both things can be real at the same time.
He: Em always says that. Both things can be real at the same time.
She: Because it's always true.
He: I know. Thank you.
She closed the hatchway.
She went back to work.
She thought: he won an award. The episode with her voice in it, the one about small lights and the laundry shop and the fireflies. Her grandmother's town and her grandmother's archive and the chain of care that ran through it — that won an award.
She thought: that is the chain reaching further than anyone knew it would.
She thought: Mio, look. The thing you found on a thin winter afternoon is being recognized.
She thought she could hear Mio's response exactly.
She went back to work.
The Wednesday morning was cold and clear.
She was here.
She was part of something.
She was glad.
---
The episode was part of the syndication now — rebroadcast, reaching the national audience that had started listening with the winter format. She listened to it again on Wednesday evening, for the first time since September.
Her voice, saying the thing about the smell.
Different from how it had been to say it. Recorded, played back, distributed — the thing had traveled. It had gone somewhere.
She thought: I sent something into the world. Not a letter this time — a voice. A sentence. And it traveled.
She thought: Mio sent something into the world. And it traveled too. Here, to me, through the podcast, through everything.
She thought: that's what caring makes — things that travel.
She put her earbuds out. Sat at the kitchen table.
She took out a piece of notepaper. She wrote — not for the hatchway, for herself:
The episode won. My voice is in it. Grandmother's archive is in it. Mio is in it, if you know where to look. The chain is moving.
She folded it. Put it in the winter drawer, which was new and just beginning.
She thought: the winter drawer will fill up. This year will fill it.
She was glad about that.
She was entirely glad.
---
Thursday she told him about Mio's letter in more detail.
Not the general outline — she had given him that at the dinner in spring. The specific detail. The exact words she could remember from hearing the tape. I haven't told her yet that I want this. The particular way Mio had written it, which was the way Mio wrote everything — direct and then suddenly vulnerable in the last sentence, the vulnerability catching you by surprise.
He listened.
When she finished he said: "I remember reading it. The last sentence. I stopped before it and then read it." He paused. "I've stopped before a lot of last sentences. But that one was different."
"How?"
"Because it wasn't asking for anything. Most letters are asking for something — to be heard, to be understood, to be given permission. That one was just — an admission. I want this and I haven't said it yet. No request. Just the fact of it."
She thought about that. About the difference between asking and admitting. About the courage of stating a thing without asking to be received.
She said: "That was Mio. She said things directly when she was ready. She didn't apologize for them."
"She must have been a good person to know."
"She was the best," she said. Simply, without dramatizing it. Just the fact.
He looked at her. "Tell me one more thing about her."
She thought about it. "She could fall asleep anywhere. Completely — deeply asleep, within five minutes. On a train, on the floor surrounded by her reference photos, at a table in a restaurant. Her body just — let go. I used to be jealous of it."
"You don't sleep like that?"
"I used to stay awake worrying." She paused. "I sleep better now."
He said: "I know. I can hear it through the wall."
She looked at him.
He said: "The way the building sounds changes when you're asleep. I learned it last winter."
She thought about him knowing when she was asleep by the quality of sound through the wall. About the specific intimacy of two people who lived close enough to learn each other's rhythms through architecture.
She said: "I know when you've had a good night versus a difficult one too."
He said: "How?"
She said: "The time you start the equipment. And whether the first take runs long or short."
He was quiet for a moment. Then: "We've learned each other."
She said: "Yes. Through a very thin wall."
He said: "The thin wall has done a lot of work."
She said: "Yes. It has."
They sat at the kitchen table and thought about the thin wall and everything it had carried over the past year.
She thought: that thin wall is part of the story. I should mention it in the ledger.
She thought: I'll mention it tonight.
She thought: it's already mentioned, in a way — in all the hatchway notes, in all the things that were said through a gap in a wall and were received carefully on the other side.
The thin wall had done a lot of work.
She was glad it was there.
---
Friday through the hatchway: The award means more this week than it did on Wednesday.
She: How so?
He: Wednesday I was still adjusting to it. Now I believe it's real.
She: Good. That's the right timeline.
He: Em told me it would take time.
She: I told you to believe it.
He: Same thing.
She: Not exactly.
He: Close enough.
She thought: yes. Close enough. The right words at the right time, give or take.
She wrote back: I'm proud of you.
He: For what specifically?
She: For making something honest enough to be recognized. For believing it eventually. For the winter format. For the archive section at the festival. For all of it.
A long pause. Then: Thank you. That's the right list.
She: I know.
She closed the hatchway.
She went to work.
The Friday afternoon was exactly a Friday afternoon in December in Fuyunagi. Cold. Clear. The machines running. The winter flowers in the window. The harbor below doing what harbors did.
She was here.
She was glad.
She was proud of him and proud of herself and proud of the year and proud of the decision to stay and proud of the small things that had accumulated into all of this.
She thought: pride is allowed. I told him so. I should believe it too.
She thought: yes. I believe it.
She went back to work.
Machine number three ran its Friday cycle.
The winter was exactly what winter was.
She was exactly what she was.
Both of those things were right.
Both of those things were good.
That was everything.
---
Saturday he came with the flowers and something else he had been deciding.
He set the flowers on the counter. Looked at the window. Looked at her.
"I want to do something in January," he said. "To mark the year. Yours and mine — both of us have been here for a year, roughly. Different months, but the same year in the sense that it was the year things became what they are."
She waited.
"I want to record an episode," he said. "Just us. Not for distribution — the syndication deal has boundaries on what can be private. Just for us. A record of the year."
She thought about that.
She said: "Like the archive tapes."
He said: "Yes. Like the archive tapes."
She said: "Your grandmother started something and kept it. We would add ours to the archive."
He said: "Yes."
She thought about the tapes — the careful labels, the decades of keeping. About the woman on the tape who had come back to say I made it to here. About her own version of coming back.
She said: "Yes. Let's do that."
He said: "January?"
She said: "When the year has fully started again."
He said: "Yes. When the year has fully started again."
She went back to the flowers — putting them in the window where they belonged, the winter arrangement that was precise and structured and full of form.
She thought: in January we will sit in the recording space and make something that is just for us. A record. Evidence of the year.
She thought: that is the right thing to add to the archive.
She thought: grandmother, we are adding to your archive.
She thought: Mio, look. The chain keeps going.
The harbor was the December color outside the window.
The winter flowers were in their places.
Everything was exactly where it was supposed to be.
---
Sunday she organized all five drawers.
She did this properly — spreading everything on the desk, going through item by item, understanding what she had.
The winter drawer from the previous year: the first hatchway notes, the generator events, the early exchanges, the letter she had written herself.
The spring drawer: the festival materials, the signed paperwork, the archive revelation, the plum tree notes.
The summer drawer: the firefly evenings, the Tokyo trip, the syndication decision.
The autumn drawer: the late fireflies, the Shun consultations, the button tin discovery, the nomination.
The new winter drawer, just started: the festival, the award, the character lanterns, the plum tree bare.
She arranged them all on the desk and looked at them.
She thought: this is a year. These five drawers. From the generator in January to the festival lanterns in December.
She thought: I came for one season and I accumulated five drawers. That is the evidence.
She put them all back — carefully, in the right drawers, in the order they happened.
She wrote in the ledger: December. Five drawers organized. A year in them. Evidence.
She closed the ledger.
She thought about the recording in January. About sitting in the studio and making something that would go in a sixth drawer, or in the archive itself, beside the tapes her grandmother had kept.
She thought: that is what comes next. The record of the year.
She was looking forward to it.
She was looking forward to January and all the months after it and the second year that was beginning.
She was, she thought, looking forward to everything.
That was new.
That was the whole year.
Looking forward to everything.
She went to bed.
The December night was cold and clear.
The wind chime moved.
It said: yes. That's it. Looking forward to everything.
She agreed.
She agreed entirely.
She slept.
The shop settled into the night.
The chain continued.
She was part of it.
She was glad.
She would always be glad.
---
Monday the second week of December began.
The winter was fully established now — no more transition, no more almost. Just winter, with its particular quality: the long dark, the cold that had settled into things, the way the shop warmth felt different from the outside cold, the wind chime's changed register.
She knew this cold. She had been in it before. She would be in it again.
She thought: this is the second winter. I know its grammar. I know what it requires.
She turned on the machines. They calibrated for the season, generating the warmth the shop needed. She did not have to think about it anymore — her hands knew the sequence, her body had learned the routine.
She thought: muscle memory. That's what the year has given me. The knowledge lives in the hands now, not just the head.
She thought: that is deep learning. The kind that doesn't require thought because it has become.
Through the hatchway, mid-morning: Wind chime is different today.
She: The cold changed it. I know. Second version.
He: Yes. The second version of winter things.
She: Do you notice the second versions of things?
He: I've been noticing all year. Since you mentioned it.
She: I noticed it first with the plum tree. When I went back and it was bare.
He: And now with everything.
She: Yes. And now with everything.
He: The hatchway sounds different in the cold too.
She: I know. The wood contracts.
He: You know everything about this building now.
She: I know what I've been paying attention to.
He: Yes. That's the same thing.
She closed the hatchway.
She thought: I know what I've been paying attention to. The machines, the seasons, the wind chime, the hatchway, the harbor. I have been paying attention to all of it for a year and now I know it.
She thought: that is what staying somewhere gives you. Not the place. The knowledge of the place.
She thought: I have the knowledge.
She went back to work.
Machine number three ran its Monday cycle.
The December cold was outside.
The shop was warm.
She was here.
She knew what she knew.
She was glad.
---
Tuesday through the hatchway: I've been thinking about the January recording. What to include.
She: What are you thinking?
He: I want it to be honest. Not just the good things. The difficult things too.
She: Yes. The archive tapes weren't just the good ones.
He: No. Your grandmother kept all of them.
She: She kept everything. Because she understood that the whole was the thing, not just the parts you wanted to remember.
He: Yes. The whole is the thing.
She: What difficult things?
He: The Rei situation. The syndication uncertainty. The weight of more people listening. All of it.
She: And for me?
He: What do you want to include?
She thought about it. She wrote: The first months. When survival was all I had. The letter I sent. The night I heard it read back. The drawer filling up.
He: The whole year.
She: Yes. The whole year.
He: January.
She: January.
She closed the hatchway.
She thought: we are going to record the whole year. Not just the good parts. The whole thing. And put it in the archive beside the tapes her grandmother kept.
She thought: that is exactly right. The whole is the thing.
She thought: grandmother kept everything because she understood that.
She thought: I understand it now too.
She went back to work.
The Tuesday morning was exactly what it was.
She was exactly what she was.
Both were good.
Both were right.
That was everything.

Wednesday Riko came with the week's flowers and announced, without preamble: "I ordered extra winter flowers for January."
Koharu looked at her.
Riko arranged things with her usual efficiency. "Because in January things need extra care. The winter is fully set in. Things need more tending in the deep of it."
"I know," Koharu said. "I'll be here for the tending."
"I know you will." Riko placed a stem. "Second winter is different from the first."
"Yes. I know the grammar of it now."
Riko looked at her. Not with assessment — with something that was almost warmth, which for Riko was the equivalent of an embrace. "Yes," she said. "You do." She finished the arrangement. "I ordered extra for February too."
"February?"
"Around the anniversary of when you arrived." She picked up her box. "I thought it deserved marking."
She left before Koharu could respond.
Koharu stood with the flowers.
She thought: Riko remembered when I arrived. She ordered flowers for the anniversary.
She thought: that is friendship. Remembering the things that mattered without being asked.
She thought: I have this. I have this specific, unasked-for remembering.
She wrote in the ledger: December. Riko ordered flowers for the anniversary. For January. For February. She remembered.
She closed the ledger.
She was glad.
She was, she thought, more glad than she had words for.
And that was fine.
Some things did not need words.
Some things were just there, like winter cold and warm shop and five drawers full of evidence and a person twenty feet away who was going to record the whole year with her in January.
That was everything.
That was, she thought, entirely and completely everything.
Thursday Mrs. Ogawa came for her shirts and looked at the winter flowers and said: "Second winter."
"Yes," Koharu said.
"Different from the first."
"I know it now."
Mrs. Ogawa examined the shirts with the usual precision. Nodded. "Your grandmother said the second winter was when you really knew a place. The first one you survive. The second one you understand."
Koharu thought about that. About surviving versus understanding. About the first winter — the generator, the hatchway, the letter sent by accident, the voice through the wall. All of it survived rather than understood.
And the second winter — understanding what the cold did to the wind chime. Knowing the buttons in the tin were for this kind of cold, when people needed small repairs. Understanding the machines' seasonal calibration because she had watched it happen once before.
She said: "Yes. I understand it now."
Mrs. Ogawa looked at her. "She would be pleased," she said.
"I know," Koharu said.
Mrs. Ogawa took her shirts. Thursday, as always.
Koharu stood at the counter.
She thought: the second winter is when you understand the place. The second spring will be when you understand the blooming. The second summer when you understand the heat. The second autumn when you understand the leaving.
She thought: I will understand all four seasons, in their second versions, by this time next year.
She thought: that is what I have to look forward to.
She was, she thought, very much looking forward to it.
She wrote in the ledger: December. Mrs. Ogawa: the second winter is when you understand a place. Yes. I understand it now.
She closed the ledger. Went back to work.
Machine number three ran its Thursday cycle.
The winter was fully here.
She understood it.
She was glad.
She would be glad for a long time.
That was everything.
That would always be everything.
You've reached the end of this chapter
The summer episode won the award.

Both of those things were right.
Both of those things were good.

Saturday he came with the flowers and something else he had been deciding.

She was, she thought, looking forward to everything.
That was new.
That was the whole year.

She went to bed.
The December night was cold and clear.
The wind chime moved.
It said: yes. That's it. Looking forward to everything.
She agreed.
She agreed entirely.
She slept.
The shop settled into the night.
The chain continued.
She was part of it.
She was glad.
She would always be glad.
