The message from Rei arrived on a Thursday morning in mid-December.
Not to Koharu — to Itsuki, which was right. But she found out because he came to the shop at ten in the morning instead of his usual eleven, which told her something had happened.
He sat on the bench. He looked at the machines.
She gave him time.
After a few minutes he said: "Rei messaged me."
She set down what she was doing. "What did she say?"
"She said she heard the award announcement. She said congratulations." He paused. "She said she has been following the program for a while. She didn't say when she started."
Koharu thought about that. About Rei following the program. About what it might mean to follow the work of someone who had been present at a significant moment in your life.
"How do you feel?" she said.
"Strange," he said. "Not bad-strange. Just — unexpected."
"What were you expecting?"
"Nothing. I had sent my message and decided whatever happened was whatever happened." He looked at the window. "I wasn't expecting her to follow the show."
"She was curious about what you had become," Koharu said. "That's what following someone's work is. You're curious about their development."
He was quiet.
She said: "She chose to watch. She was interested. That means something."
"What does it mean?"
She thought about it. "That whatever happened between you, it didn't make her stop being interested in who you were becoming. That's — not nothing." She paused. "It's actually quite a lot."
He was quiet for a longer moment. Then: "I replied. I said thank you. I said I was glad she was still singing."
"And?"
"She said her voice is different now but it's still hers. She said she's made her peace with different." He looked at his hands. "She said she hoped I had too."
Koharu stood at the counter.
She said: "Have you?"
He said: "I think so. More than I thought I had." He looked up. "The podcast is different from what I made before. The music is different. I'm different. I've been making my peace with different."
She said: "Yes. That's what the year has been for both of us."
He said: "Making peace with different."
She said: "Yes."
He was quiet.
Then: "Thank you for telling me to contact her."
She said: "Thank you for doing it."
He left after a while, back upstairs, the building settling. She stood in the shop.
She thought: Rei follows the program. She congratulated him. She said she hoped he had made peace with different.
She thought: that is a generous thing. To watch someone's work, to follow their development, to congratulate them. That is Rei choosing to be someone who did not let bitterness determine what she did.
She thought: that is the practice. Choosing what you do with what happened to you.
She thought: that is what we are all doing. Choosing.
She went back to work.
Machine number three ran its Thursday cycle.
The December cold was outside.
She was here.
Choosing.
---
Friday she wrote two things in the ledger.
First: December. Rei messaged. She said different. He said making peace with it. Both of them are.
Second: I am too. Different and making peace with it.
She read both entries.
She thought: yes. All three of us. Different and making peace. That is the common thread.
She thought: the program is made of people who have made peace with different. That is what the letters are. That is what the format holds.
She thought: that is what the year has been for me. Learning to make peace with the specific different I became.
She closed the ledger.
She went to the window. The December harbor was outside — dark blue, complex, knowing. The winter light was different from all the other seasons: lower, more angled, the kind that found the things you had not thought to look at.
She was in its light.
She thought: I am different from the person who arrived in January. I have made peace with the different.
She thought: yes. That's the whole year.
She went back to work.
Machine number three ran its Friday cycle.
The winter was exact.
She was exact.
Both were good.
---
Saturday he brought flowers and the quiet of someone who had been with something for two days.
She let it be.
She put the flowers in the window. He sat in his corner and worked. The shop ran around them.
At noon he looked up. "I want to include Rei in the January recording," he said. "Not directly — she didn't agree to that. But the shape of it. What happened and what happened after."
She said: "Yes. The whole year includes her."
He said: "The whole year includes a lot of things I wasn't sure I'd gotten right."
She said: "Most of them you got right."
He said: "How do you know?"
She said: "Because the people involved are still here. Still talking to you. Still following your work." She paused. "People walk away from things that were done wrong to them. Rei didn't walk away. She watched and congratulated you."
He was quiet.
She said: "That's not absolution. But it's information."
He said: "Yes."
She said: "Include her. The shape of it. The year includes her."
He said: "Yes."
He went back to work.
She went back to work.
The Saturday afternoon continued, cold and clear and exactly what a December Saturday in Fuyunagi was.
She thought: I told him Rei's message was information. That people walk away from things done wrong. That she didn't.
She thought: that is also true of me. I could have walked away from this town, from him, from the year. I stayed. That is also information.
She thought: staying is information. It is the most consistent information.
She thought: I have been staying all year. That is the clearest thing I have said.
She went to work.
Machine number three ran its Saturday cycle.
The winter was here.
She was here.
Both were staying.
That was everything.
---
Sunday she went to the plum tree park for the last time before the new year.
The tree was fully bare. The winter version — all form, no color, just the structure that would hold the blooms when spring came again.
She looked at it for a long time.
She thought: I have seen this tree in four seasons now. Spring, summer, autumn, winter. I know all four versions of it.
She thought: next spring I will see it again. The same tree, the same blooms, but I will know them differently because I have seen them before. And the knowing will change what I see.
She thought: that is the gift of the second time. Recognition changes the seeing.
She thought: the second spring will show me things the first one didn't.
She walked back to the shop.
She opened it. Turned on the machines. Let the day begin.
Through the hatchway, mid-afternoon: Did you go to the plum tree?
She: Yes.
He: And?
She: Bare. All form. Ready for spring.
He: One more month.
She: Almost exactly.
He: The anniversary.
She: Yes.
He: Are you glad you stayed?
She thought about it for a moment. Not performing consideration — actually considering.
She wrote: Yes. More than I knew I would be when I arrived. More than I knew I could be.
He: Good. I'm glad too.
She: That you stayed?
He: That you stayed. And that I stayed. Both.
She: Both.
He: Yes.
She closed the hatchway.
She sat with both for a moment.
Both.
Both of them here. Both of them having stayed. Both of them in the second winter, knowing its grammar, making their peace with different.
She thought: yes. Both.
She went back to work.
Machine number three ran its Sunday cycle.
The December afternoon was outside, cold and clear and exactly what it was.
She was inside, warm and staying.
That was everything.
That would always be everything.
She was glad.
She would always be glad.

The week before Christmas had the quality of the approach to a significant marker — not the holiday itself but the sense of a year closing toward its end.
She had not thought much about the holidays in Tokyo. They had been events that happened — the lights, the decorations, the year-end energy — but not things she participated in with particular engagement. Here they were different. Smaller, more deliberate. The town's Christmas lights were simple and specific to the town. The market had one more evening before it closed for the winter break. The harbor lit up with a string of lights someone had added in the last week.
She walked the harbor road on a Tuesday evening and looked at the lights reflected in the water.
She thought: this is my second Christmas in Fuyunagi. The first one I had barely arrived — it was early January, she had come in the new year's window, and the previous Christmas had still been Tokyo, the last one in the old chapter. This one was fully hers.
She thought: next Christmas will be the third. And I will know three versions of it.
She thought: yes. That's what staying gives you. Three versions.
She walked back to the shop.
Through the hatchway: The harbor lights are good this year.
He: Nao put them up. He's been doing it for three years but this year he added more.
She: Why more?
He: He said it seemed like a year that deserved more.
She thought about that. About Nao, who noticed things and acted on them without making a production of the noticing or the acting.
She wrote: He's right. It does.
He: Yes.
She: Thank you for telling me why.
He: Nao deserves credit.
She: He'll deny it.
He: Absolutely.
She closed the hatchway.
She went to bed.
The December night had the harbor lights reflecting in it, through the window, a warm distortion of the cold-clear winter.
She thought: this is my life. This specific night. These specific lights.
She thought: I choose this. I choose it still. I will choose it tomorrow.
She slept.
---
Wednesday Riko came with the last flowers before the holiday break.
"I'll be back in the new year," she said. "I take the last week off. Tradition."
"I know. You told me in spring."
Riko looked at her. "You remembered."
"I've been paying attention."
Something in Riko's expression shifted — not softening, exactly, because Riko's expressions didn't soften. But it changed. Became something that was close to pleased without being overtly so.
"Your grandmother paid attention the same way," she said. "She remembered everything. Not to use it — just because she thought the things that mattered to people were worth remembering."
Koharu thought about her grandmother's notebook. About the bird sightings and the temperatures and the observations. About the kind of person who recorded the world carefully because she thought it deserved the attention.
She said: "She taught me without meaning to."
Riko said: "That's the best teaching." She picked up her box. "Happy new year, Koharu. When I come back in January the flowers will be for the anniversary."
She left.
Koharu stood at the counter.
She thought: in January the flowers will be for the anniversary. Riko remembered.
She thought: I am surrounded by people who pay attention. Who remember the things that matter. Who order flowers for anniversaries without being asked.
She thought: I have built this. This specific constellation of people who know me in this place.
She thought: that is the work of a year. Not the shop. The people around the shop.
She wrote in the ledger: December. Last Riko flowers before the holiday. She'll be back in January. For the anniversary flowers. She remembered.
She closed the ledger.
Machine number three ran its Wednesday cycle.
The winter was here.
The new year was coming.
She was ready for it.
She was ready for everything that came after.
That was the whole year.
That was always going to be the whole year.
---
Thursday she started the year-end inventory.
Not a legal requirement — just her own practice, something she had developed over the eleven months of running the shop. She went through the supplies, the machines' maintenance records, the accounts. She noted what had worked and what needed adjustment. She made a plan for January.
The plan for January: new seal on machine four's door, which had been showing early signs of wear. Detergent order, increased to account for the slightly higher traffic the shop had been getting since the festival table had become a known thing. A new brush for the folding table that had been losing bristles since October.
Practical. Specific. Hers.
She looked at the list.
She thought: I know what this shop needs. Not approximately — specifically. I know the exact seal and the exact detergent brand and the exact brush. I have learned this shop completely.
She thought: that is the gift of eleven months. I know it completely.
She thought: the twelfth month will be the year complete. And then the second year begins.
She was ready.
She was ready for the second year.
She was ready to know the shop better in the second year than she had in the first, in the way that second times were always richer than first times because you knew what to look for.
She wrote in the ledger: December. Year-end inventory. I know what the shop needs. The second year will teach me more.
She closed the ledger.
Machine number three ran its Thursday cycle.
The winter afternoon was outside.
She was inside.
Both exactly what they were.
Both exactly right.
That was everything.
Always would be everything.
---
The last week of December arrived with a particular quality of completion.
Not dramatic completion — the year was not making itself into a narrative with a satisfying arc and a lesson announced. It was just finishing, the way years finished: one ordinary day after another until the last one, and then a new one beginning.
She worked through the last days of the year with the steady attention she had learned to bring to things. Intake, processing, machines, ledger. The ordinary cycle. The right temperature.
He came by most mornings. The hatchway was active in the evenings. The winter flowers were in the window.
Nothing changed. Everything was exactly what it was.
She thought: this is what the end of the year looks like when you've been paying attention all the way through it. Not a summary. Just a continuation. The year doesn't end — it becomes the beginning of the next one.
She thought: I will wake up on January first in this building, in this town, with these machines running and this person twenty feet away and this wind chime moving in the harbor wind. Everything will be exactly what it has been and also one year further along.
She thought: that is the gift. Not starting over. Continuing.
Through the hatchway on December thirtieth: Last note of the year.
She: Is it?
He: It is. I wanted to say something.
She: What?
He: Thank you. For the year. For everything that was in it.
She thought about that. About the year. About the generator and the archive and the tea and the festival and the award and the fireflies and the soup on Thursday evenings and the lanterns with character and Rei's message and the five drawers full of evidence.
She wrote: Thank you for the year. For being here and being what you are in it.
He: We're good?
She: Yes. We're very good.
He: Good.
She: Good.
She closed the hatchway.
She went upstairs. Made tea. Sat at the kitchen window for the last time in the old year.
The harbor below was its December color — deep and complex and knowing. The festival lights Nao had added were still on. The boats at their moorings. The town doing its last-night-of-the-year things.
She thought: I have been here for almost a year. In two weeks it will be exactly a year.
She thought: in two weeks Riko will bring the anniversary flowers and in January we will make the recording and the second year will have properly begun.
She thought: I am ready.
She thought: I have been ready for a long time.
She went to bed.
The last night of the year was cold and clear and exactly what it was.
The wind chime moved.
It said: yes. One more year. The next one starts now.
She thought: yes.
She agreed.
She slept.
She slept well.
She always slept well now.
The machine number three ran its final cycle of the year, the drum turning, the water moving, the whole faithful mechanism doing what it had always done.
The chain continued.
The year ended.
The next one began.
She was here for it.
She would always be here for it.
That was everything.
---
January first arrived quietly.
She had not stayed up for it. She had gone to bed at ten — after the podcast, after the wind chime — and woken at seven to a new year that looked exactly like the old one from the outside: the same harbor, the same pale blue sign, the same machines waiting for her.
She opened the shop.
Machine number three started on the first try.
She made tea. Sat at the desk. Opened the ledger to a new page.
She wrote at the top: Year Two.
She looked at it.
Year Two. After the first year of learning the grammar. Now the second year of understanding it.
She closed the ledger.
Through the hatchway, mid-morning: Happy new year.
She: Happy new year.
He: How does it feel?
She: The same. And completely different.
He: Yes. That's the right answer.
She: Is there a wrong answer?
He: There are less accurate answers.
She: Yours was accurate too?
He: Yes. The same and completely different. I've been thinking about that.
She: What have you decided?
He: That same-and-different is the whole point of continuing somewhere. If it were only the same, there would be no point. If it were only different, there would be no continuity. Both together is what belonging looks like.
She thought about that for a long time.
She wrote: Yes. Both together. That's what belonging looks like.
He: I thought you'd like that.
She: I do.
She closed the hatchway.
She went back to work.
Year Two.
Both together.
She was here for all of it.
You've reached the end of this chapter
The message from Rei arrived on a Thursday morning in mid-December.

She went back to work.
The Saturday afternoon continued, cold and clear and exactly what a December Saturday in Fuyunagi was.
She thought: I told him Rei's message was information. That people walk away from things done wrong. That she didn't.
