The call from Hasegawa came on a Tuesday in the second week of January.
Not the call she expected — not about the documentary, not about the spring follow-up she had been loosely anticipating. Hasegawa said: the documentary had been picked up for wider distribution, and the production house behind it was developing a companion project. Longer, more personal. They wanted someone who could shape the visual language of the whole thing from the beginning, not just review it at the end.
"Production design," Hasegawa said. "Creative lead on the visual side. Remote possible, but some on-site in spring."
Koharu was at the intake counter when the call came. She set down what she was doing. Stood still for a moment.
She said: "Tell me what the project is."
Hasegawa told her. Forty minutes. She listened completely, asking the occasional question — not to appear engaged but because she was genuinely engaged.
When Hasegawa finished, Koharu said: "Let me think about it."
"Of course," Hasegawa said. "Take as long as you need."
She hung up. Stood at the counter.
She thought: this is a real offer. Not a consulting request — a creative leadership role, remote-first, terms negotiable. The kind of work she had been good at in Tokyo, in a context that was not Tokyo.
She thought about what she wanted. Not what she should want, not what made sense from outside — what she actually wanted, which she had learned to identify over the course of a year.
She wanted to do interesting work with her skills. She wanted to do it in a way that did not require her to leave Fuyunagi or subordinate the shop. She wanted to be paid properly and have authority over her own process.
She thought: those are my conditions. Let me see if they fit.
She went to the hatchway. Sent through: Hasegawa called. Production design offer. Creative lead. Remote first. I'm thinking.
He: What are you thinking about?
She: Whether my conditions fit. I know what I want — seeing if they'll have it on those terms.
He: And if they will?
She: Then I'll say yes.
He: And if they won't?
She: Then I'll say no.
He: It's that clear?
She: I learned clarity this year.
He: Yes. You did.
She: Thank you for noticing.
He: I've been watching you practice it.
She closed the hatchway. Went back to the intake pile. Did the afternoon's work with one part of her mind on the offer, turning it over, checking it against what she knew about herself.
By evening she had her answer.
---
She called Hasegawa on Wednesday morning.
"Yes," she said. "With conditions."
She listed them: the shop remained her primary commitment. Her schedule was not negotiable during heavy intake periods — spring and late autumn were hers. On-site visits would be planned in advance, minimum three weeks notice. Creative decisions went through her; she was not a consultant, she was a lead. Fee structure was her rate, not production rate.
A pause on Hasegawa's end. Then: "Those are reasonable conditions. I'll need to confirm the fee structure with the producers but I expect they'll say yes."
"Good," Koharu said. "I'll wait."
She hung up. Sat at the desk.
She thought: I just negotiated my own terms for a significant professional engagement. Not accepted what was offered. Stated what I required.
She thought: I could not have done this a year ago. I knew the skill but not the right to use it for myself.
She went to the hatchway. Sent through: Called Hasegawa. Listed my conditions. Waiting for confirmation.
He: What were the conditions?
She wrote them out. The whole list.
A long pause. Then: Those are the right conditions.
She: I know.
He: Em said the same thing to me in August. About the syndication.
She: Yes. I remembered.
He: You applied it to yourself.
She: I learned from watching you figure it out.
He: I learned from watching you.
She thought about that. About the two of them learning from each other in the second-hand way, each watching the other work something out and quietly applying it to themselves.
She wrote: We've been teaching each other all year.
He: Yes.
She: Small lights.
He: Not calibrated to whether anyone is watching.
She: Yes.
She closed the hatchway.
She went back to work.
Machine number three ran its Wednesday cycle.
The January light came through the window — the specific winter-angle light she knew from the previous January, the second version of it, different because she knew it.
She was here.
She was doing the work.
She was glad.
---
Hasegawa confirmed on Thursday: the producers had said yes to all conditions.
She texted a simple okay and went back to the intake pile. She had known they would say yes. The conditions were fair. She had not asked for anything unreasonable. She had asked for what she needed and it had turned out to be acceptable.
She thought: that is often how it works. You ask for what you need and it turns out to be more compatible than the fear suggested it would be.
She thought: I was afraid for years. Afraid to ask for what I needed because what if they said no. But here was the thing — if they said no, she would have said no herself, and gone somewhere else, or done something else. The fear was not of losing the opportunity. The fear was of learning that she was not worth what she thought.
She thought: I know what I'm worth now. Not from external validation — from the year. From the shops and the machines and the hatchway and the five drawers and the button tin and all the evidence.
She thought: that is the gift of the year. Not the offer. The knowledge that I could say no if needed.
She wrote in the ledger: January. Hasegawa confirmed. All conditions accepted. I could have said no.
She looked at that last line.
She added: That's the point.
She closed the ledger.
Machine number three ran its Thursday cycle.
The winter afternoon was cold and clear.
She was warm inside the shop.
She was doing the work, on her terms.
She was exactly herself.
That was everything.
---
Friday she told Riko.
Riko came with the anniversary flowers — a full week early, because she had ordered extra and wanted them in before the new project took any of Koharu's attention. She arranged them in the window with care: white and pale yellow and one branch of something that had a very small bud on it, barely visible.
"Early spring," Riko said, pointing to the bud. "Just a suggestion of it. A week or two more."
Koharu looked at the bud. "I thought the plum tree would be first."
"The plum tree is later than this. This is a winter bloomer. Very stubborn." Riko adjusted it. "Like some people."
Koharu smiled.
She told Riko about the offer. Riko listened with the focused attention she gave everything.
When Koharu finished, Riko said: "On your terms."
"Yes."
"Good." She picked up her box. "That's the only way to do it."
She left.
Koharu stood with the flowers — the early spring suggestion in the window, the winter light on it, the bud very small and very certain.
She thought: I am that bud. Just a suggestion at first. The year a slow unfurling. And now here, in January, something almost ready to open.
She thought: not open yet. But ready.
She thought: spring is coming.
She thought: I am ready for spring.
She was, she thought, ready for everything.
Machine number three ran its Friday cycle.
The winter was almost done.
Spring was in the window — just a suggestion.
She was here for when it arrived.
She would always be here.
That was the whole thing.
That was everything.
---
Saturday was the anniversary flowers and the recording and the Saturday flowers all on the same day, which was more than one significant thing at once but felt right.
Itsuki brought the yellow flowers — specifically yellow, he said, because it was January and yellow was the color of first things. She put them in the window with the early spring suggestion Riko had brought, and the two of them looked at the window together.
"Yes," he said.
"Yes," she agreed.
Then they went upstairs to the recording space.
She had not been in the recording space many times — the hatchway was the usual channel, or the kitchen, or the shop. But she knew the space: the specific acoustic quality, the way it was quieter than the rest of the building, the equipment arranged with the care of someone who understood that the arrangement mattered.
He set up the recorder. She sat in the chair across from the usual chair. Between them: a table, two cups of tea, and the year.
"No format," he said. "We're not making an episode. We're making a record."
"For the archive."
"Yes. For the archive."
She looked at the recorder. "What do we say?"
"What happened," he said. "In order, or not in order. However it comes."
She thought about the year. About where to begin.
She began at the generator.
He listened. Added his own version of the same events from the other side of the wall. She had not known some of it — the specific moments in his recording space that corresponded to the moments in her shop. Two parallel tracks, occasionally touching.
They talked for two hours.
About the winter and the letters and the archive. About the spring and the plum tree and the festival. About the summer and the fireflies and the Tokyo trip. About the autumn and Shun and Rei and the lanterns. About December and the award and the festival again. About January, the new year, both of them here.
At the end he said: "Is there anything else?"
She thought about it.
She said: "Mio would have liked this town. I think she knew that. I think she planned it."
He said: "I think she did."
She said: "I want that in the record. That she planned it and it worked. That she was right."
He said: "Yes. That goes in the record."
He turned off the recorder. They sat with the completed thing — the two hours of the year, now contained in a recording.
She thought: that is the archive tape for this year. The record of what happened in the building that held a laundry shop and a recording space and a thin wall through which two people had learned to know each other.
She thought: grandmother, I added to your archive.
She thought: Mio, it worked. You were right.
---
They walked back down to the shop together.
The January afternoon was cold and clear, the harbor the deep winter color it had been when she arrived the previous year.
She stood at the shop window. He stood beside her.
She said: "The plum tree."
He said: "In February, maybe."
She said: "The first blooms."
He said: "Yes. I'll tell you when I see them."
She said: "I know the path now. I can go myself."
He said: "Yes. But it's better with someone."
She looked at him. He was looking at the window — at the early spring bud in the arrangement, small and certain.
She said: "Yes. Better with someone."
He turned and looked at her.
She thought: this is who I chose. This person who buys two cups when he gets the first one wrong. Who watches from upstairs when old things arrive. Who said deliberate and then was. Who read Mio's letter carefully eighteen months before she got here.
She thought: I choose him still. I choose him today and I will choose him tomorrow.
He said: "January is almost the anniversary."
She said: "Ten more days."
He said: "What do you want to do?"
She thought about it. "Open the shop," she said. "Make tea. Watch the harbor. Maybe go to the plum tree if it's blooming."
He said: "That's everything?"
She said: "That's everything."
He nodded. He was quiet for a moment.
Then he said: "Koharu."
She looked at him.
He said: "I'm glad you stayed."
She looked at him for a long moment — at the actual expression, the one that was not managed, the one that was fully present.
She said: "I'm glad I stayed too."
She thought: yes. That's the whole year. That's what it comes down to. I stayed and it mattered. I stayed and I found what I was looking for without knowing what I was looking for. I stayed and the staying became the answer.
She thought: I will keep staying. That is the decision I will keep making. One ordinary day at a time.
She went back to work.
He stayed for the afternoon — in his corner, his laptop open, the winter light through the window at the January angle.
Machine number three ran its Saturday cycle.
The wind chime moved.
The harbor was the winter color below.
Everything was exactly what it was.
She was here.
She was glad.
She would always be glad.
---
Sunday she walked Akari-dori for the first time in the new year.
The leaves were long gone. The street was bare and precise — all structure, no color, the same as the plum tree. But the structure was good. She knew the street's bones now, knew what it looked like without its seasonal ornamentation, and found it beautiful in this form too.
She walked slowly.
She thought: this is the second winter of this street. The second version. I know it now.
She thought about all the second versions she would have: the second spring with the plum tree blooming again and this time she would know the blooms were coming before they came. The second summer with the fireflies at the river, going with the easy confidence of someone who had done it before. The second autumn with the leaves on Akari-dori turning red again, this time with the knowledge that they would.
She thought: the second time is the gift of having stayed.
She walked the length of the street. Stood at the top and looked at the harbor below — the winter harbor, the deep color, the boats at their moorings.
She had seen this view in all four seasons now. She would see it in all four seasons again.
She thought: yes. That is belonging. Knowing something in all four of its versions.
She walked back.
She opened the shop.
She made tea.
The Sunday passed in the ordinary way of Sunday shop openings — not busy, the machines running on partial cycles, the town doing its weekend things.
She sat at the desk and looked at the five drawers.
She thought: the sixth drawer is starting. January notes. The recording, the Hasegawa confirmation, the anniversary flowers.
She found a small box — the last of the ones she had been accumulating — and labeled it: Year Two.
She put it on the desk beside the others.
Year One: winter, spring, summer, autumn, late winter.
Year Two: beginning.
She wrote in the ledger: January, Year Two. The sixth drawer begins. The second versions are coming. The plum tree soon.
She closed the ledger.
Machine number three ran its Sunday cycle.
The winter was outside.
She was inside.
The year was beginning again.
She was ready for it.
She was, she thought, exactly ready.
She was glad.
She would always be glad.
That was everything.
That would always be everything.
---
Monday she started the new project.
Not the full work — Hasegawa was still assembling the team and the proper start date was February. But she began her own preparation: reviewing the documentary again, understanding the visual language Hasegawa had established, building the mental framework she would bring to shaping the companion piece.
She did this at the desk in the shop, between intake waves, in the spare minutes that the shop's rhythm provided.
She thought: this is what the second year looks like. The shop, the project, the hatchway, the recording, the morning tea, the Saturday flowers. All of it existing together without conflict because each has its place.
She thought: I know where everything goes now. The shop is first. The project is second. The person next door is — not ranked, exactly. Adjacent. Part of the same thing.
She thought: that is what it means to have a life that is yours. Everything has its place. Nothing is competing because you know what matters and in what order.
She looked at the preliminary notes she had made for the project. They were good. She had a clear point of view. She knew what was true about coastal towns in winter and how to make that visible.
She thought: I know this because I have lived in one for a year. I earned this knowledge.
She closed the notebook. Went back to the intake pile.
Machine number three ran its Monday cycle.
The year-two January continued, cold and clear and full of things she knew how to do.
She did them.
She was here.
She was glad.
She would always be here.
She would always be glad.
That was everything.
Tuesday Nao came by with the equipment he needed to pick up and a question he had apparently been holding.
"The project," he said. "Hasegawa's thing."
"Yes."
"On your terms."
"Yes."
He looked at her with the direct look he used when he was going to say something that mattered to him. "Good," he said. "I'm glad. I've watched you figure out what your terms were all year." He picked up the equipment case. "It took you about six months. Now you know."
"More like nine," she said.
"The first three don't count. You were still in survival mode."
She thought about that. About the generator and the first months. About Nao's accurate timeline.
She said: "Yes. Fair."
He said: "The next nine will be better."
She said: "I think so."
He left. She stood at the counter.
She thought: Nao watched me figure out my terms all year. He kept showing up with food and information and the occasional direct observation. He did not make himself the center of any of it. He just — kept showing up.
She thought: that is what friends do. Show up and keep showing up.
She thought: I have people who show up.
She thought: that is the whole thing. Not one person — a whole group of people who keep showing up because they have chosen to and because you have given them reason to.
She went back to work.
Machine number three ran its Tuesday cycle.
The January afternoon was cold.
She was warm.
She had people who showed up.
That was everything.
That would always be everything.
You've reached the end of this chapter
The call from Hasegawa came on a Tuesday in the second week of January.

She was, she thought, exactly ready.
She was glad.
She would always be glad.
That was everything.
That would always be everything.
