The call came on a Thursday.
She had been expecting it — not specifically this week, but eventually. She had not blocked the number. She had decided, at some point she could not precisely identify, that blocking was a form of avoidance and she was not interested in avoidance. If he called, she would answer, and she would say what needed to be said.
She answered.
"Koharu." His voice was the same as it had always been — the particular careful quality of Shun when he was managing something.
"Shun," she said.
"I wanted to tell you the project is wrapping up. The Fuyunagi section came out well. Your notes on the edit made a significant difference."
"I'm glad," she said. "Is that why you're calling?"
A pause. "Partly," he said. "I also wanted to say — the story I ended up with is different from the one I had in mind when I arrived. The project shifted during the edit. It became more about what people find when they stop looking for what they thought they were looking for."
She was quiet.
He said: "I thought you should know that. Since you're part of the reason it shifted."
She said: "The town shifted it. You just had to look at it properly."
"Yes," he said. "That's what your notes helped me do."
She thought about her notes. About the images that had been picturesque versus the ones that were true. About telling him which were which because she had the specific knowledge of someone who lived here.
She said: "The project sounds better now."
He said: "It is." A pause. "Koharu — the new project. Hasegawa told me you're leading the visual side."
"Yes."
"That's the right role for you. You should know that. The role that was always yours was the one where you shape the whole thing, not just execute someone else's vision."
She received this carefully.
She said: "I know that now."
He said: "I know you do. I just wanted to say it."
She said: "Thank you, Shun."
He said: "Good luck with Fuyunagi. Take care of it."
She said: "I do."
She hung up.
She stood at the counter.
She thought: Shun called to tell me the project shifted, and that my notes made a difference, and that leading is the right role for me. He said it without asking anything.
She thought: that is the version of him that I always knew was there, under the version that had failed her. The version that could see clearly when he wasn't managing anything.
She thought: I don't need to be in his story. But I can receive that version of him when it appears.
She went to the hatchway. Sent through: Shun called. He said the project shifted toward something more honest. He said taking creative lead is the right role for me.
He: And?
She: And I agreed. And said thank you.
He: That's all?
She: That's all. The chapter is closed now. Properly.
He: Yes?
She: Yes. He said take care of Fuyunagi. I said I do.
A pause. Then: You do.
She: I know.
She closed the hatchway.
She went back to work.
Machine number three ran its Thursday cycle.
The chapter was closed.
She was here.
She was taking care of it.
She was glad.
---
Friday she wrote in the ledger: January. Shun called. Said the project shifted. Said leading is right for me. Said take care of Fuyunagi. I told him I do. Chapter closed.
She read it.
Added: It was closed before he called. His call just confirmed it.
She closed the ledger.
She thought about chapters. About the ones that had opened and closed in the past year. The chapter that had made her leave Tokyo — closed. The chapter of the first Fuyunagi winter — closed. The Shun chapter — closed. The chapter of not knowing herself — closed.
She thought: the new chapters are open. The Hasegawa project. The second year. The recording in the archive. The January flowers and the plum tree coming and the second spring.
She thought: I am in the open chapters now. Not the closed ones.
She thought: that is what it feels like to be in the middle of something good. You are in the open chapters.
Machine number three ran its Friday cycle.
The January afternoon was exactly what it was.
She was in the open chapters.
She was glad.
She would always be glad.
---
Saturday he brought flowers and they put them in the window together, and then he said: "My life is an open chapter."
She turned to look at him. He was looking at the window, the January flowers, the early spring bud Riko had added.
"I've been thinking about chapters," he said. "Since you sent the note about Shun. About which ones are closed and which are open." He paused. "I've been living with Rei being a closed chapter that I hadn't closed properly. Now it's closed. And the space it was taking up is — open."
She said: "What do you want to put in it?"
He looked at her. The actual expression. The one that was not managed.
He said: "This. What's already here."
She looked at him.
He said: "I know that's not news to you. I know you know. But I wanted to say it directly." He paused. "I want what we are, more of it, for as long as it's mine to want."
She thought about this. About the specific courage of saying a thing directly when it didn't have to be said — when it was already known — because saying it directly was its own act. Not clarification. Commitment.
She said: "I want that too."
He said: "Yes."
She said: "Yes."
They stood at the window in the January light.
She thought: we have been standing at windows all year. Winter window, spring window, the headland in the spring, the harbor walk, the river bank in summer. Two people finding themselves at windows and looking out together.
She thought: that is what we are. Two people who look at things together. Who carry each other's weight carefully without taking over the carrying. Who teach each other through walls.
She thought: yes. That is what I want more of. All of it. For as long as it is mine to want.
She went back to work.
He stayed for the afternoon.
Machine number three ran its Saturday cycle.
The winter was outside.
They were inside.
The open chapters stretched ahead, full of things she was looking forward to.
She was here.
She was, she thought, entirely and completely here.
For all of it.
---
Sunday was the anniversary.
One year since she had arrived in Fuyunagi with one suitcase and the quiet devastation of someone who was running from something and had found a direction. One year since she had stood at the shop window and seen the harbor for the first time and thought: okay. This. For now.
She opened the shop at nine.
Machine number three started on the first try.
She made tea. Sat at the desk. Looked at the five drawers and the new sixth one. Looked at the button tin and the ledger and the winter flowers in the window.
She thought: a year ago I had one suitcase and a grandmother's shop to run. Now I have this.
She thought: this is what a year gives you when you stay in it.
She wrote in the ledger: January, Year Two. First anniversary. I opened the shop. Machine three started first try. Tea. Five drawers and one new one. The window is right.
She read it.
She added: I would do the year again exactly as it was.
She closed the ledger.
Through the hatchway, mid-morning: Happy anniversary.
She: Thank you. How did you know the exact day?
He: You told me. In September, when Hana visited and you mentioned it.
She thought back. She had mentioned it in passing — almost a year, she had said, in September.
She wrote: You remembered.
He: I remember things that matter.
She: Yes. I know you do.
He: Flowers are in the window.
She: I know. Riko ordered them for this week.
He: She told me.
She: Of course she did. You all coordinate.
He: We don't coordinate. We just — all pay attention to the same things.
She: Yes. That's what it is.
She closed the hatchway.
She stood at the window. The anniversary flowers — white and pale yellow and the early spring bud that was further along now, almost ready. Riko's flowers for the date she had remembered without being asked.
She thought: I have people who pay attention to the same things. That is the whole thing. Not one person — a whole constellation of people all paying attention to what matters.
She thought: I built that this year. The constellation.
She thought: I am part of one that was already here — the chain, the archive, the thirty years of the shop — and I built my own strand of it.
She thought: that is what you do when you stay somewhere. You become part of what was already there and you add to it.
She was part of it.
She was adding to it.
She was glad.
---
That afternoon, he came down to the shop.
Not with his laptop — without. Just himself.
He stood at the door for a moment. She looked at him.
He said: "Come for a walk. The plum tree is starting."
She said: "Starting?"
He said: "First buds. I went this morning to check."
She thought: the second spring. The plum tree's second blooming. The second version.
She said: "Yes."
She told machine number three she would be back in an hour. It did not respond but continued its cycle, which was as close to acknowledgment as it got.
They walked up the hill. The January afternoon was cold but the sky was the specific color that preceded spring — not spring itself, but the light beginning to change. Less hard. More hopeful.
The plum tree was at the edge of the park. She saw it before she saw the buds — recognized it by its shape, the specific structure she had learned in winter when it was bare.
Then she saw the buds. Small and tight and very certain. Not flowers yet. But the clear intention of flowers.
She stood at the tree and looked.
She thought: I know this tree. I know it in winter and spring and summer and autumn. I know it will bloom in another few weeks and I know what the blooms look like because I have seen them. And seeing them this time will be different because I have seen them before.
She thought: that is recognition. That is the gift of the second time.
She turned and looked at him. He was watching her, not the tree.
She said: "You remembered to check."
He said: "I've been checking since the first week of January."
She thought: he has been checking the plum tree since the first week of January so he could tell her the day the buds appeared.
She thought: that is who he is. Someone who checks the things that matter and tells you when the moment comes.
She thought: I choose him. I choose him clearly, with full knowledge of who he is, and I would choose him again.
She said: "Thank you."
He said: "For what?"
She said: "For checking. For coming to get me."
He said: "Always."
She looked at the tree. At the buds. At the second spring just beginning.
She thought: this is the anniversary and the plum tree and the person who checked every day since January first. This is the specific day I will put in the drawer. This is the note I will write tonight.
She was here.
She was here for the second version of the blooming.
She was glad.
She would always be glad.
---
That evening she wrote two things.
First, in the ledger: January. First anniversary. Plum tree starting. He checked every day since the new year. I would do the year again.
Second, in the hatchway: Year two is starting right.
His reply: Yes. It is.
She: Good.
He: Good.
She closed the hatchway.
She went to bed.
The anniversary night was cold and clear.
The wind chime moved.
It said: yes. Year two. All of it. The same and completely different.
She thought: yes.
She agreed entirely.
She slept.
Machine number three ran its late cycle.
The shop held everything it held.
The chain continued.
Year two was starting.
She was here for it.
She would always be here for it.
That was everything.
---
The week after the anniversary was the week the plum tree moved from buds to the first true flowers.
She went every other day. Each time the tree was further along — first the tight buds loosening, then the first white petals, then by Thursday a proper cluster of them, the specific bloom she had first seen the previous spring with the specific quality she now knew: pale, deliberate, the smell of something cold and something coming.
She went on Thursday with him. They stood at the tree again. The blooms were the same as last year. She was different.
She looked at the flowers and thought: I know these. I know what they mean — not symbolically, in the calendar sense. I know when they come and what comes after. I know the tree that holds them in all four seasons.
She thought: this is the second spring. I am in the second version of the blooming.
She thought: it is better. Not more beautiful — she knew the flowers were the same flowers. But richer. The way recognition made things richer.
He said, beside her: "The same as last year."
She said: "Yes. And completely different."
He looked at her.
She said: "Because I know them now."
He said: "Yes. That's the difference."
They stood at the plum tree in the January light — the winter that was becoming spring, the specific threshold between, the buds that had become flowers because that was what they did.
She thought: I am standing at this tree in the second version of its blooming. I will stand at it in the third version next year. And the fourth. And as many as this place will have me.
She thought: that is enough.
She thought: that is, in fact, everything.
She said: "Ready to go back?"
He said: "When you are."
She looked at the tree one more time.
She thought: Mio, look. Second spring. Same tree. I know it now.
She thought she could hear Mio say: obviously. That's what you get for staying.
She smiled.
They walked back down the hill, the plum tree behind them and the harbor ahead and the shop with its pale blue sign visible from the slope.
Home.
She thought: home.
She thought: yes.
That's it.
That's everything.
She went back to work.
Machine number three ran its Thursday cycle.
The second spring was beginning.
She was here for it.
She was, she thought, here for all of it.
All the way through.
For as many years as it was hers to have.
---
Friday she began the visual research for the Hasegawa project properly.
Not the preliminary notes — the actual research. She sat at the desk in the quiet of a Friday morning before the intake wave, with the town's archive of photographs she had assembled and the visual references she had been collecting and the specific point of view she had developed over a year of looking.
She knew what the project needed. She knew because she had been in this town and had learned to see it honestly — not the picturesque version, the true version. The harbor at high tide and at low. The market in the morning rush and the afternoon lull. The streets in winter and spring. The way the light changed by season and time of day.
She could show someone else what she saw.
She thought: that is the skill. Not just seeing — being able to show others what you see. Making your vision communicable.
She thought: I developed this skill here. In this town. Over this year.
She wrote in the ledger: January, Year Two. Started the visual research. I can see this town honestly. I can show others what I see.
She closed the ledger.
The intake wave arrived. She set the research aside. Went to work.
The Friday moved through its hours.
Through the hatchway, late afternoon: Working on the Hasegawa research?
She: Yes. Good session.
He: I could hear you thinking through the wall.
She: How does that sound?
He: Quiet and focused. The specific quiet of someone getting something right.
She: You can hear that?
He: Through this wall? Yes.
She thought about that. About the wall between them that had been conducting information all year. The hatchway notes. The ambient sounds. The way the building breathed differently when she was working versus when she was thinking versus when she was asleep.
She wrote: The wall has carried a lot.
He: Yes. It has.
She: We should thank it.
He: We should. Though I think it already knows.
She smiled.
She closed the hatchway.
She went back to the research.
Machine number three ran its Friday cycle.
The January afternoon was exactly what it was.
The wall was exactly what it was.
Everything was exactly right.
She was glad.
She would always be glad.
The second year was beginning.
She was here for it.
All of it.
Always.
Saturday he brought the flowers — the week after anniversary flowers, still the white and pale yellow, the early spring bud now more open than the previous week, definite in its bloom.
She put them in the window. The bud was a flower now. Small, but fully open.
She thought: the second spring is here. Not fully — not yet. But here enough to see.
He sat at his corner with his laptop. She worked. The shop ran around them.
At noon Nao came by, looked at the flowers, looked at them, and said: "I love coming here. It's exactly the same and completely different every week."
"That's Fuyunagi," Itsuki said, without looking up.
"That's specifically this shop," Nao said. He took his things. "Same and different. That's a good thing to be."
He left.
She looked at Itsuki. He was typing.
She said: "Same and different."
He said, without looking up: "I said it first. In January."
She said: "I know. It was the right thing to say."
He looked up. The actual expression.
She said: "The shop is the same. I am completely different. Both are true."
He said: "Yes."
She said: "That's the whole year."
He said: "Yes."
She said: "And the next one will be the same and different too."
He said: "Yes. That's how it works."
She looked at him.
She thought: yes. That's how it works. The same place, the same machines, the same flowers on Saturdays — and the person in it completely different because of everything that has happened, and the next year adding another layer.
She thought: I am looking forward to the layers.
She thought: I am, she realized, genuinely excited about the future. Not cautiously optimistic — excited. The way you were excited about things when you trusted them enough to look forward to them without fear.
She thought: that is the whole year. Learning to look forward without fear.
She went back to work.
Machine number three ran its Saturday cycle.
The second spring was in the window.
She was here.
She was, she thought, exactly where she was supposed to be.
For the rest of it.
For as long as it was hers.
That was everything.
That would always be everything.
You've reached the end of this chapter
The call came on a Thursday.
She had been expecting it — not specifically this week, but eventually. She had not blocked the number. She had decided, at some point she could not precisely identify, that blocking was a form of avoidance and she was not interested in avoidance.

A pause. Then: You do.

She went back to work.
Machine number three ran its Thursday cycle.
The chapter was closed.
She was here.
She was taking care of it.
She was glad.
