The interdisciplinary emergency response drill was held on a Saturday in late November, at a municipal training facility twenty minutes from campus by university bus. Ha-eun had attended two previous simulations this semester, but those had been tabletop exercises, run in classrooms with printed scenario cards and whiteboards. This one involved an actual building, actual smoke machines, and students from four different programs converging on a site and being expected to function together in real time.
She arrived early enough to receive the yellow medical support vest and the briefing packet from the program coordinator, a third-year Medical student who ran the volunteer emergency corps with an efficiency that Ha-eun respected and intended to study. She found her designated station, a triage area set up in a converted loading bay with three folding tables and a supply kit that she checked twice, and then she waited.
The drill was not going to start for forty minutes.
She used the time to walk the site perimeter and map the space: entrances, exits, the coverage areas of the fire response teams, the routes between the main building and her station. She had started doing this at every practical exercise, building the habit of spatial awareness that Dr. Lee had described as the single most underrated skill in emergency medicine: knowing exactly where you are and what is around you before you need that information in a hurry.
She was mapping the rear entrance when she saw Do-hyun.
He was with his team, doing the same thing she was doing: walking the perimeter, noting the routes. He was in the dark training uniform of the Fire and Disaster Management program, with equipment she did not recognize on his belt, and he moved differently in the uniform than he moved in his regular clothes, with a focused deliberateness that she had not seen at close range before. She had known he was good at this. She had heard him talk about it. She had not yet seen it.
He had not seen her yet. She watched him check a side entrance and say something to the team member beside him, and she thought: this is what he looks like when he is entirely in his element.
She went back to her station.
---
The person who came to her station twenty minutes before the drill started was not someone she had met before.
"Choi Na-ri," the woman said, extending a hand. Second-year, Fire and Disaster Management, the yellow stripes on her sleeve indicating a certification Ha-eun did not yet recognize. She had the kind of physical efficiency that Ha-eun associated with people who had been doing physically demanding things for a long time: compact, no wasted movement, the quality of someone who was always aware of the space she was occupying and the space around her.
She said she was checking the coordination points between the fire teams and the medical station and wanted to understand the triage protocol Ha-eun was running so she could factor it into evacuation sequencing.
Ha-eun walked her through it.
Na-ri asked three questions. All three were good questions, the kind that identified load-bearing assumptions in the protocol and tested them directly, and Ha-eun answered them with the specificity they deserved rather than the summary version she would have given to someone making general conversation.
They talked for ten minutes. At the end, Na-ri said: "That protocol is better than what I was briefed on. I'll update my team's assumptions."
Ha-eun said: "Let me know if you need to adjust any of the handoff timing."
Na-ri looked at her with the particular quality of attention that was assessment rather than social engagement. "I will," she said.
Then she left, and the drill started.
---
Ha-eun did not see Do-hyun during the first hour of the drill.
She worked her station, handled five simulated casualties, coordinated with the secondary medical team at the other end of the building, and kept the triage flow clean. It was, she found, different from the classroom simulations in a way she had not fully anticipated: the sounds were different, the smoke was real enough to smell, the actors playing casualties behaved with an unpredictability that no scenario card had prepared her for. She adjusted in real time, which was what she had been trained to do, and she found that adjusting in real time felt, unexpectedly, like exactly the right application of everything she had been learning.
She was between casualties when the call came from the main building: one of the fire teams had a team member presenting symptoms of mild smoke inhalation, requesting medical support at the extraction point.
Ha-eun took her kit and went.
The extraction point was at the side entrance she had mapped that morning. The team was already there when she arrived, and Do-hyun was with them, not as the affected member but as the person who had called it in. He looked at her when she arrived, and something in him settled visibly in a way she registered peripherally while she was already moving toward the person who needed attention.
She worked quickly. The exposure was mild, nothing requiring transport, the symptoms manageable with the support kit and clear air. She went through the protocol and the person was steady within a few minutes.
Throughout this, Do-hyun stood slightly back, in the place where a team leader stood when the situation was being handled by someone with more relevant expertise. He was not anxious. He was not hovering. He was simply present and watchful and completely letting her do her work, which was, she thought, exactly what you wanted from someone in that position.
When she was finished and had given the clearance, she looked up and found him looking at her.
"Thank you," he said.
Two words. She had heard him say them before. They sounded different in this context, in this setting, with the smoke in the air and both of them in the equipment of their respective fields. She did not have time to examine why. The radio at her belt was calling her back to the main station.
She went back.
---
Na-ri found her during the final break, when the drill was paused for an assessment checkpoint.
She sat down beside Ha-eun without preamble and said: "How long have you known Do-hyun."
Ha-eun looked at her. The question was casual in delivery and clearly not casual in intent. "Ten years," she said.
Na-ri nodded. Not surprised. The nod of someone whose existing hypothesis had been confirmed. "I've been in the program with him for six months," she said. "He's good in the field. Better than most first-years at reading variable conditions." She paused. "He reads everything very accurately. Rooms, situations, people."
"Yes," Ha-eun said.
"But yours is different," Na-ri said.
Ha-eun looked at her. "What."
"The way he reads your room. Your particular room." Na-ri was not unkind. She was simply direct, in the way of someone who thought directness was a form of respect. "He checks on you before he checks on anything else in a shared space. I noticed it the first time you were in the same room during a group session. I've been noticing it for six months."
Ha-eun did not say anything.
Na-ri stood up. She brushed something off her uniform and looked at Ha-eun with the expression of someone who has offered information and is leaving it to the recipient to decide what to do with it. "Just something I noticed," she said. "For what it's worth, the triage protocol you're running today is excellent."
She went back to her team.
Ha-eun sat at her station for the remaining four minutes of the break and looked at the scenario printed on the briefing card in her hand and thought about: your room is different.
She thought about what that meant, technically, as an observation. She thought about what it would mean if it was true. She thought about whether she wanted it to be information or whether she wanted to put it back in the category of things she had not yet examined.
She was not sure she had a choice anymore.
The drill resumed.
---
Do-hyun found her at the end, when the teams were assembling for the debrief. He appeared at her shoulder with the particular quality of having arrived specifically rather than accidentally, the way he arrived at the crossroads on the first day of school.
He asked if the protocol had run cleanly. She said mostly, with one adjustment she wanted to review. He said Na-ri had mentioned the triage coordination had been efficient. Ha-eun said Na-ri was good to work with.
"She is," he said. "She's the person in the program I'd want beside me in an actual emergency."
Ha-eun nodded. She thought about what Na-ri had said and looked at Do-hyun saying this, and tried to see whatever Na-ri had seen: the way he occupied a room in relation to her, the thing that was different. She was looking directly at him and could not see it, which was perhaps the point. You could not see the thing that organized you from inside it.
"What," he said, because she was looking at him for a fraction longer than the conversation required.
"Nothing," she said. "Na-ri gave me something to think about."
He looked at her for a moment with the expression that was not quite a question but contained one. He did not ask it. "The bus is boarding," he said.
"I know," she said.
They walked to the bus together, in the easy parallel of people who had been walking in parallel for ten years, and Ha-eun thought about: your room is different. She thought about it all the way back to Seoul and sat with it through the evening, and at her desk that night she opened her clinical journal to the back pages and wrote: Na-ri said something today. I have not decided if I want to know what it means.
She looked at this for a while.
She closed the journal.
She knocked once on the wall, in the way that meant: nothing is wrong, I am aware of you. One knock came back.
She went to sleep still not entirely decided.
---
Min-chae noticed something the following Tuesday.
They were in the cafeteria, the way they were most Tuesdays after the morning lecture, and Ha-eun had been talking about the drill while Min-chae was eating with the focused attention of someone who was listening to what was being said and also to what was not being said.
Ha-eun described the triage protocol. She described the smoke inhalation incident and how she had handled it. She described Na-ri's questions about the protocol and how she had answered them. She described the debrief afterward.
She did not describe what Na-ri had said during the break.
"You're leaving something out," Min-chae said.
"I'm giving you a summary."
"You always give me complete summaries. This one has a gap in it." Min-chae put down her chopsticks. "It's about Do-hyun, isn't it."
Ha-eun looked at her tray. "Someone said something to me that I'm still thinking about."
"Someone in the drill."
"Yes."
Min-chae waited with the particular patience she had for topics she understood Ha-eun needed to approach sideways. "What did they say," she said finally.
Ha-eun considered whether to answer this. She decided that saying it out loud was probably useful, the same logic she had applied before when she had told Min-chae about the postcard: saying things to someone with no context forced her to hear how they sounded.
"She said that the way he reads my room is different from the way he reads any other room," Ha-eun said.
Min-chae looked at her.
"That he checks on me before he checks on anything else in a shared space," Ha-eun continued. "That she had noticed it for six months."
Min-chae continued to look at her with the expression Ha-eun recognized as: I have thought this for a long time and I am deciding whether to say so.
"Min-chae," Ha-eun said.
"I have thought this since September," Min-chae said.
Ha-eun looked at the cafeteria. She looked at her tray. She looked at Min-chae.
"You could have said something," she said.
"I was waiting for you to notice it yourself," Min-chae said. "Because when someone tells you a thing before you've noticed it, you spend a lot of energy deciding whether to believe them. When you notice it yourself, you already know it's true."
Ha-eun thought about this. It was, she reflected, extremely on-brand for Min-chae, who had a theory of knowledge that she applied to interpersonal situations as rigorously as she applied it to biochemistry. "And do you think it goes the other direction," Ha-eun said carefully.
Min-chae looked at her with the patient expression of someone who had just been asked whether water was wet. "Yes," she said. "I think it goes extremely clearly in the other direction."
Ha-eun ate her lunch. She thought about: your room is different. She thought about ten years of rooms. She thought about whether she had always been in this room or whether she had moved into it gradually, and whether it mattered which one was true.
She thought about the fact that knowing something and being ready to do anything about knowing it were not the same thing, and that she was currently in possession of the first without having any clear relationship to the second.
"What do I do with it," she said.
Min-chae looked at her for a long moment. "Ha-eun," she said, very gently. "You're going to have to figure that one out yourself."
---
That evening Ha-eun came home and stood in her apartment and looked at the wall.
She looked at it for a moment, not doing anything, just standing there, which was unusual for her because she was not a person who stood still without purpose.
She thought about Na-ri: six months of noticing. She thought about Min-chae: since September. She thought about herself: right now, standing in her apartment looking at the wall and feeling something she did not have a precise word for but which had the quality of a thing that had been present for a long time and was only now becoming visible in the specific way that things became visible when you stopped moving fast enough to outpace them.
She thought about ten years of growing up beside someone and the specific texture of that proximity and the fact that proximity, over ten years, built a kind of knowledge that was different from any other kind of knowledge, that was rooted in accumulated time and accumulated attention and accumulated presence, and that this kind of knowledge had its own logic and its own momentum.
She thought: I have been not looking at this for a long time.
She thought: Na-ri has been looking at it for six months and sees it clearly.
She thought: what is the thing that I see when I stop not looking.
She stood at the wall and thought about this for a while longer than was probably warranted.
Then she went to make dinner, because she was hungry and thinking was better when she was not hungry, and because some things needed to be approached slowly, and looking directly at a thing too fast sometimes made it harder to see rather than easier.
She would come back to it.
She was going to come back to it.
She made dinner and ate it and did not knock on the wall, which was its own form of information, the first time in several weeks that she had not knocked without a specific reason for not knocking, and she sat with the not-knocking and noticed it and understood what it meant and decided to let it mean that for tonight.
Tomorrow she would knock again as normal.
Tonight she was sitting with something she had just begun to see.
---
She knocked the next morning.
Three knocks, the normal morning signal, the one that meant: I am up and accounted for and starting my day. Three knocks came back within a few seconds.
Ha-eun stood at the wall with her hand still on the plaster and thought: this is the system we built. She thought about where the system had come from: a winter night when she was thirteen and Do-hyun had been having a bad week and they had figured out, through trial and error, that knowing the other person was present and okay was sometimes more useful than anything either of them could say.
Ten years of three-knock mornings.
Ten years of single-knock nights.
Ten years of: nothing is wrong, I am here, I am thinking of you.
She pressed her palm flat against the wall for a moment, the way she sometimes did when she wanted to feel the solid specific reality of the surface, and she thought about what it meant that all of this was what it was. That it had always been what it was. That two people who built this system over ten years had built something that had a name, and the name was not friendship, and she had been calling it friendship because the other name was one she had not been ready to look at directly.
She was starting to be ready.
She was not completely ready.
She removed her hand from the wall and went to make tea.
She thought about what Min-chae had said: you're going to have to figure that one out yourself. She thought that Min-chae was correct, and that figuring it out herself was going to require her to actually look at the thing she had been organizing her looking around rather than toward.
She was going to have to look at it.
She poured the tea and looked out the window at the street below and the slice of sky visible between the buildings, and she thought: I have been not looking at this for a long time.
She thought: the reason I have not been looking at it is not that I did not know it was there.
She thought: the reason I have not been looking at it is that I knew exactly what I would find.
She stood at the window and let that thought exist without immediately moving away from it.
Then she drank her tea and got her things and went to class, and on the way she passed the cherry blossom road, which was still bare, and she thought: spring is coming.
She thought: things look different in bloom than they do in the before.
She thought: I am going to have to find out if that is true.
She was starting to believe it might be.
You've reached the end of this chapter
