The library closed early on a Thursday for scheduled maintenance, which Ha-eun discovered when she arrived with her books at six thirty in the evening and found the lights already off and a notice on the door announcing resumption at nine the next morning.
She stood on the steps for a moment and thought about her options.
She had two chapters of cardiovascular pathophysiology to review before the midterm on Friday and a set of emergency protocol questions to work through. She could go back to her apartment and study alone at her desk, which was her usual arrangement. She could ask to use the study room in the medical building, which was technically available until ten but which she had found consistently too cold.
She texted Do-hyun, who had been planning to study at the library too.
Library closed, she wrote. Heading home.
His response came in about thirty seconds: Come here.
She went.
---
Do-hyun's apartment had a kitchen table that was the same size as hers, which was to say: small. This was the central architectural fact of the next three hours, the fact that structured everything that happened within them, because the kitchen table was sized for one person working and became, with two people and four books and two sets of notes, an exercise in spatial negotiation that neither of them had needed to manage in the study rooms at the library, where the tables were long and wide and the distance between two people could be whatever you wanted it to be.
Ha-eun put her books down on one side. Do-hyun made tea and put her cup in the one available space on her side of the table. He sat down across from her. There was about forty centimeters between their open books.
"We could move to the floor," Ha-eun said.
"The floor is worse for reading," he said. "We'll manage."
They managed. Forty centimeters was not nothing. Forty centimeters was the distance at which you became aware, without doing anything about it, of small things: the way the other person turned pages, the specific sound of their pen moving across paper, the quality of their concentration when they were reading something difficult versus something easy. Ha-eun had been aware of these things in Haejin, when they had studied at each other's kitchen tables in high school, but the version of her then had not filed them as specifically as the version of her now was filing them, perhaps because the version of her now had had a conversation with Na-ri and a conversation with Min-chae and a morning of standing at the wall thinking about things she had not been looking at.
She read about cardiovascular pathophysiology.
She was aware that she was reading about cardiovascular pathophysiology, and aware of the forty centimeters, and aware of both things simultaneously, which made the reading approximately forty percent less efficient than usual.
---
At around eight thirty, Ha-eun had a question about a concept in Do-hyun's reading that connected to a concept in hers.
She asked. He answered. The answer required him to turn the book toward her so she could see the diagram, which required her to lean across the table, which closed the forty centimeters to something closer to twenty. He explained the diagram. She followed the explanation. The diagram was clear, the explanation was good, and she was entirely capable of following it, and she was also entirely and uncomfortably aware of twenty centimeters and the specific quality of his voice when he was explaining something he understood well.
She sat back.
She processed the information she had just received.
She said: "Thank you."
He said: "The cardiovascular analogue is in the next section."
She turned to the next section. The analogue was there. It was useful. She read it.
She did not read the first sentence entirely correctly the first time, which had not happened to her with a textbook since second year of secondary school, and she read it again and it was fine, the sentence was perfectly clear, her brain was simply doing something other than reading.
She put the sentence firmly in place and moved on.
---
At nine thirty they had finished the main content and were working through practice questions when Do-hyun put his pen down and stretched in the specific way he stretched when he had been still too long, which she knew because she had seen it approximately a hundred times, and Ha-eun looked up from her question sheet and looked at him stretching and then looked back down at her question sheet.
She had been aware of him for three hours.
She was aware of this awareness.
She thought about Na-ri saying: your room is different. She thought about Min-chae saying: I have thought this since September. She thought about the awareness as data, the way she thought about all data: what was it measuring, and what did the measurement indicate.
What it was measuring, she thought, was: her attention. The consistent, background, involuntary direction of a portion of her attention toward the person across the table, in the way of an orientation that did not require effort because it was not chosen but simply was.
What this indicated, she thought carefully, was something she had been working her way toward for several weeks and had not yet arrived at fully, and she was not going to arrive at it tonight in Do-hyun's kitchen with her question sheet in front of her.
She answered the practice question.
"You're distracted," he said.
She looked up. He was looking at her with the particular assessment quality he applied when he was noticing something about her. "A little," she said.
"Since when."
"A few days," she said. "I'm thinking through something."
He accepted this with the equanimity he applied to her explanations of her internal processing, which was: full acceptance, no interrogation, the understanding that she would tell him what she was thinking when she was done thinking it. "The cardiovascular question in four is about preload," he said. "If you're stuck."
She looked at question four. She had not been stuck on question four. She had been stuck on something else entirely. "Thank you," she said.
She answered question four. Correctly. Without difficulty.
He went back to his own questions.
She answered three more and then paused and looked at him bent over his notebook, writing something in the compressed but legible handwriting she had known since he was eleven years old, and she thought: I have been sitting across from you in kitchens for ten years.
She thought: that is a very long time to sit across from someone and not look at what you are sitting across from.
She looked back at her question sheet.
---
They finished at ten thirty and began packing up.
"Good session," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"The table is very small."
"I know." He was stacking his books. "We should plan for this in the future."
She looked at him. He was not looking at her, he was organizing his notes, and the sentence had been entirely practical in delivery, and she thought about it for a moment before responding. "Should we," she said.
He looked up. She looked at him looking up. Something in the moment had a quality she recognized as: both of them aware, simultaneously, of a sentence that had a second level, and both choosing, by unspoken agreement, not to address the second level tonight.
"The library closes sometimes," he said.
"Yes," she said. "It does."
She picked up her books. "Thank you for the space."
"It's a small space," he said.
"Yes," she said. "I noticed."
She went home.
She stood in her own apartment and looked at her bookshelf for a moment and then sat at her desk and thought about twenty centimeters and cardiovascular pathophysiology and the specific quality of attention she had been operating with for three hours.
She thought: I have been not looking at this.
She thought: I am starting to look at it.
She thought: I am not sure I know what to do with what I see.
She gently put all of this down, because she had a midterm tomorrow and she needed to sleep, and she had learned from her father that the most important skill in any demanding practice was knowing when to stop working and let the accumulation settle.
She knocked three times. Three times back.
She slept better than she expected.
In the morning she took the midterm and performed well on it and did not think about kitchen tables for most of the day, which was a form of discipline she thought she deserved some credit for.
Though she thought about it in the evening.
She thought about it for quite a while in the evening.
---
The midterm went well. She knew it had gone well before she handed in the paper, because she had worked through every question and found no moment where she could not access what she needed. This was the way she preferred to finish exams: not triumphant, not uncertain, just the quiet satisfaction of having been adequately prepared.
She found Do-hyun outside the building when she came out, which she had not expected because his practical assessment had been the previous day. He was sitting on one of the concrete benches that lined the path, reading something on his phone, in the jacket and the position of someone who had decided to wait somewhere and was waiting.
She stopped beside him.
He looked up. "How was it."
"Adequate to excellent," she said, which was the scale she used. "Yours was yesterday."
"Yes."
"Then why are you here."
He put his phone away and stood up. "I was in the area," he said, which was, she thought, technically true and not otherwise informative. The medical building was not on the direct route from any of his classes. She had looked at his schedule once when they were coordinating study sessions and had a general sense of where he was at what times.
"The area," she said.
"It was a reasonable walk," he said.
Ha-eun looked at him standing next to the concrete bench in the November light, in the jacket, with the expression of someone who had decided to do a thing and was not going to be extensively cross-examined about the decision. She thought about the kitchen table and twenty centimeters and the way he had said: we should plan for this in the future. She thought about the specific quality of someone who waited at crossroads and at concrete benches without announcement.
"Let's walk," she said.
They walked across the campus center, past the cherry blossom road, which was bare and would remain bare for four more months, and Ha-eun thought about the morning she had written in her clinical journal: spring will be different. She was beginning to understand what she had meant by it, and the understanding felt specific and present and slightly terrifying in the way that certain forms of clarity were terrifying.
"You're doing it again," he said.
"Doing what."
"Thinking about something and not being present in the conversation."
She looked at him. "We're not having a conversation. We're walking."
"We're walking together, which is a form of conversation," he said. This was so completely his logic, the kind of claim he made with total certainty about the categories of things, that she almost smiled. "What are you thinking about."
She considered whether to answer this. She was, currently, thinking about the fact that he had come to wait for her after her midterm for no stated reason, and about what Na-ri had said, and about Min-chae, and about twenty centimeters in a small kitchen. She was thinking about all of these things and their relationship to each other and what they collectively indicated.
"Something that's becoming clearer than it used to be," she said.
He was quiet for a moment. He said: "Is it something I've done."
"No," she said immediately, because that was true and needed to be true clearly. "Nothing you've done. Something I've been thinking about."
He accepted this in his usual way, which was completely. "Good," he said.
They walked in silence for a while, the good kind, the kind that did not need filling. The campus was quieter after exams, a mid-afternoon lull between the morning rush and the evening study sessions, a few people moving here and there but mostly empty paths and the gray November sky.
"Do-hyun," she said.
"Yes."
"When you came to the crossroads on the first day of school. And waited twenty minutes."
"Yes."
"Why."
He was quiet for a step. "I wanted to know how the day had gone," he said. "I thought you might want someone to walk back with."
"You could have texted."
"I know."
She thought about this. She thought about the specific form of his caring, which was not often verbal and was consistently physical: appearing in spaces, being present before being asked, understanding the shape of what someone needed without requiring them to name it. She had known this about him. She had always known this about him. She was only now, with Na-ri's observation and Min-chae's response and three hours in a small kitchen, beginning to look at it directly.
"I'm glad you waited," she said.
He looked at her. She was looking ahead. "I know," he said.
They reached the path that forked toward their apartment building. They took it together and walked home through the November afternoon, and when they reached the building Ha-eun held the door for him and they rode the elevator in the easy silence that needed no management, and on the fourth floor she went to her apartment and he went to his and she closed her door and stood in the center of her living room for a moment.
She thought about: I'm glad you waited.
She thought about the way he had said: I know.
She thought about the fact that he had known. About the fact that she had known he would know. About the fact that this particular kind of knowing, the kind where you did not need to explain something because the other person already understood it, was something she had with exactly one person in the world, and had had with that person for ten years, and the name for what that was had been organizing itself in the back of her mind for several months and was almost fully assembled now.
She sat at her desk and opened her clinical journal.
She wrote in the back pages: proximity is a form of information. I have been in proximity to the same person for ten years. The information is available.
She wrote: I think I know what it is.
She wrote: I don't know what to do with it yet.
She closed the journal and went to study for tomorrow's lecture, and she was fairly successful at this, which she considered evidence of her functional compartmentalization skills, and she did not think about kitchen tables again until she was lying in bed in the dark and the thinking arrived without being invited, as it often did.
She lay with it.
She thought: this is going to keep getting clearer, isn't it.
She thought: yes.
She thought: then I should probably decide what I'm going to do when it's completely clear.
She fell asleep without deciding.
Some decisions, she was learning, made themselves when they were ready.
She was beginning to think this one might be one of those.
---
Three days later she ran into Do-hyun in the hallway kitchen of their floor, which was a small room with a microwave and a kettle that neither of them used very often because they each had their own. She was there to refill her water bottle. He was there to heat something.
They were the only two people there.
She filled her bottle. He put his container in the microwave. They stood in the small space while the microwave ran and neither of them had anything particular to say, which was the normal condition of their time together, but which tonight felt different in a way she was still trying to define.
She looked at the microwave.
She thought about the kitchen table and the way twenty centimeters had felt when she was reading cardiovascular pathophysiology and the quality of the awareness she had been carrying since the drill. She thought about a thing she had been not-looking-at becoming something she was now looking at obliquely, not directly yet, but no longer avoiding.
The microwave beeped.
He took out his container. He looked at her. She was looking at the microwave door. "Ha-eun," he said.
She turned.
He was looking at her with the steady, unhurried quality of attention he gave to things he was going to say carefully. "You've been doing something," he said. "In the last week. I don't know what it is. But you're doing it."
She looked at him. "Yes," she said.
"Is it about the investigation."
"No," she said.
He waited.
She thought about whether to say anything. She thought about Min-chae's theory: when someone tells you a thing before you've noticed it, you spend energy deciding whether to believe them. She thought about the fact that she had noticed it herself and that meant she already knew it was true.
She thought about the fact that he was standing across from her in the small hallway kitchen holding a container of food with the expression of someone who was asking a real question and deserved a real answer, even if the real answer was: I don't have enough of this assembled yet to give it to you.
"I'm thinking about something," she said. "I'm not ready to say it yet. But I will be."
He looked at her for a moment. The steady, unhurried look. "Okay," he said.
"You're not going to ask what it is."
"No."
"Why not."
"Because you said you'd tell me when you're ready," he said. "I believe you."
Ha-eun held the water bottle in both hands and looked at him holding the container and thought about ten years of: I believe you. About the specific quality of being trusted to know your own timing, to be honest about your readiness, to not be pushed into something before you had arrived at it on your own.
She thought about the fact that this, too, was what he did.
She thought about what it meant that she had never had to earn this from him, that it had simply been extended from the beginning, continuously, without conditions.
She said: "Thank you."
He said: "Goodnight, Ha-eun."
She said: "Goodnight."
He went back to his apartment. She went back to hers.
She stood at her desk and looked at the clinical journal and thought: the thing I am assembling is about him.
She thought: I know.
She thought: he knows I'm assembling something.
She thought: he's going to wait until I have it ready.
She thought about what it meant to be with someone who would wait for you to be ready, who would not push, who would extend trust as a default rather than a reward.
She thought: this is the thing.
She thought: this is the thing I have been looking at.
She sat down.
She opened the journal.
She wrote: I know what it is now.
She looked at the sentence.
She closed the journal.
She went to bed.
You've reached the end of this chapter
The library closed early on a Thursday for scheduled maintenance, which Ha-eun discovered when she arrived with her books at six thirty in the evening and found the lights already off and a notice on the door announcing resumption at nine the next morning.

"The area," she said.
"It was a reasonable walk," he said.
Ha-eun looked at him standing next to the concrete bench in the November light, in the jacket, with the expression of someone who had decided to do a thing and was not going to be extensively cross-examined about the decision.
