The ferry from the mainland arrived at seven forty-three, and Elara was at the dock before it docked.
She had not intended to be early. She had set an alarm for seven fifteen, made coffee in the suite kitchen — the functional one, as specified — and told herself she would walk at a reasonable pace and arrive approximately on time, the way a person with an organized interior life would do. Instead she had found herself at the harbor at seven twenty, standing on the stone pier with her hands in her coat pockets, watching the ferry's lights approach across the silver morning water.
She had been in Valmere for eleven days.
This was the first time she had left the gravitational field of The Moonwell for any reason other than food or sleep. She had not registered this until she was standing on the pier and looking at the harbor — the cafés with their chairs just going out, the fish stalls setting up at the market end, the ordinary Valmere morning happening around her with complete indifference to what was occurring inside the glass building on the cliff — and she had understood, with the particular clarity of stepping outside something you have been inside too long, that she had been living almost entirely within those walls.
Not just working. Living.
She had been thinking in terms of we.
She had not fully registered this until Mira had said it on the phone two nights ago — not accusingly, just observationally, in the way Mira noticed things and reported them the way a good instrument reports data. *You keep saying we.* And Elara had opened her mouth to correct it and had not been able to, because when she replayed the conversation in her head she found the word everywhere: *we found the footage, we went to the basement, we heard the piano.* We.
The ferry docked.
Mira came off it third, which was typical — she was never first off anything because first off meant not having had time to organize her bag to her satisfaction, and Mira would rather be third with organized luggage than first with chaos. She was wearing a yellow coat that Elara had not seen before, large sunglasses despite the overcast morning, and she was pulling a suitcase that was significantly larger than a week's visit required.
"You're early," Mira said, when she reached Elara.
"You're on time," Elara said.
Mira stopped in front of her and looked at her — not a quick social look, but the Mira look, the one that processed information from the top of a person's head to the set of their shoulders and drew conclusions that were usually accurate and occasionally devastating. Elara stood still and let her do it.
"You look different," Mira said.
"I've been working."
"Not that kind of different." Mira tilted her head slightly. "You're paying attention to something. Not the way you pay attention to a project. The other way."
Elara picked up one handle of Mira's suitcase. "Come on. I found a place for breakfast."
The café was on the harbor front, not yet crowded, with tables outside that caught the morning light from the east in a way Elara had noted on her first morning and had been intending to return to. She ordered coffee — actual coffee, not the water she'd told herself she'd switch to after the first week — and Mira ordered tea and a quantity of food that suggested she had been rationing herself on the ferry in preparation.
Then Elara told her everything.
She had not planned to tell it all at once. She had imagined a more managed disclosure — strategic, sequenced, the important information first and the more ambiguous information held back until she had context for it. But Mira was sitting across from her in the yellow coat with her hands around her tea and her expression set to *I am listening and I will not interrupt,* and it turned out that what Elara needed, after eleven days of managing what she knew and how much of it she shared and with whom, was to say all of it to someone who was entirely on her side.
So she said all of it.
Selene. Room 1206. The burn marks in suite 1701. The reflecting pool's impossible light. Theo and the infrasound. The footage with seven missing minutes. The polaroid photographs. The basement control room with its still-blinking power indicator. The ghi chú at the bottom of Selene's design sketch: *L. knows. Don't let him control the sequence.*
And Adrien. She said Adrien last, and she said less about him than about the rest of it, and she was aware of this asymmetry and aware that Mira was aware of it.
Mira listened without interrupting. This was, as Elara had noted internally, unusual. Mira interrupted things. Mira had opinions in real time and expressed them immediately and had built her professional reputation partly on the speed and accuracy of her reactions. The fact that she was not interrupting meant she was doing something else with the information — processing it differently, setting it into a structure rather than reacting to each piece as it arrived.
When Elara finished, Mira drank some of her tea.
"You said we," she said. "In the retelling just now. Multiple times."
"I know."
"*We went to the basement. We saw the footage. We found the photographs.*" Mira set her cup down. "The we in most of those sentences is you and Adrien Solace."
"We're working together."
"Yes," Mira said, in the tone that meant she was not disputing the literal content of the sentence.
Elara looked at the harbor. A fishing boat was coming in, low in the water, the morning catch visible in the hold. She watched it dock and thought about how easy it was to be at sea without noticing the current.
"There's something else," Mira said, and turned her laptop to face Elara.
The article had been published on a Valmere arts news site at eleven the previous evening. Elara recognized the publication — it was well-regarded, genuinely read by people in the industry, not a gossip aggregator. The headline was professionally phrased and the more damaging for it: *Solace heir reopens Moonwell after decade of silence — questions remain about choice of lead artist.*
The body of the piece was careful. It did not say directly that Elara was unfit for the project. It noted the Aster Hall incident with a precision that suggested the writer had access to the original investigation report. It quoted an unnamed "industry source" expressing concern about the wisdom of entrusting a major reopening installation to an artist whose last major project had resulted in an injury. It mentioned Adrien Solace's name in proximity to phrases like *reputational risk* and *legacy of the building.*
The byline was a staff journalist's name. The article had been shared, in the forty-five minutes before Elara saw it, from the social account of Lucien Valez's gallery.
Elara read it twice. Then she put the laptop down.
"How much reach?" she asked.
"Enough. It's been picked up by two larger outlets this morning." Mira paused. "It's a pressure play. Someone wants you reactive. Wants you to make a statement or pull back from the project."
"Lucien Valez," Elara said.
"His gallery shared it. He didn't write it. But yes."
Elara picked up her coffee and held it without drinking. She thought about a man she had not yet met, who had sent a journalist to describe her professional failure in careful language, who had timed the share for overnight so it would be waiting for her in the morning, who was doing this from the direction of a name that appeared in Selene's handwriting in a locked room ten years ago.
"He's not trying to stop the project," she said slowly. "He's trying to control it. Or control me. A frightened artist is easier to manage than a confident one."
"That's what I thought too." Mira closed the laptop. "Elara. I'm not telling you to leave. I know better than that. I'm telling you to be careful with one specific thing."
Elara looked at her.
"You're starting to trust Adrien Solace," Mira said. "Not just work with him. Trust him. And I think you should ask yourself whether you've checked that. Whether the trust is based on what you've seen, or whether you're in a building full of things that feel meaningful and you're attaching meaning to him because he's the person who's there."
It was not a cruel thing to say. It was said with care, with the particular care of someone who has watched you before and knows the specific shape of the mistake you tend toward. Elara heard it and did not dismiss it, because Mira did not say things she didn't mean and because the question was a real question.
She thought about the elevator. She thought about the ballroom doorway. She thought about the way he had stepped away from her on the rain-wet balcony two nights ago and said her name for the first time.
"I hear you," she said.
"That's all I needed," Mira said, and picked up her fork.
She brought Mira to The Moonwell in the afternoon.
She had been curious about this — about what Mira would make of the building, whether it would do to her what it had done to Elara, whether the effect was particular to Elara's specific history and sensibility or whether it was something the building did to anyone who entered it properly. She had not prepared Mira's expectations in either direction, had simply described the practical layout and let her form her own response.
Mira stepped through the service entrance and into the back corridor and said nothing.
She said nothing in the corridor, and nothing when they entered the atrium lobby, and nothing when she stopped at the edge of the reflecting pool and looked at the surface and the light on the ceiling and the quality of the space around the water. She stood there for what Elara judged to be nearly two minutes, which was more stillness than Mira typically deployed in any given hour.
"Okay," Mira said, finally.
"Okay what?"
Mira looked at her. "Okay, I understand now why you've been saying we." She looked back at the pool. "This building does something. I don't know what. But I understand."
Elara felt something settle in her chest — the specific relief of being understood by someone whose understanding you had not been certain of.
"There's more," she said.
"There always is," Mira said, and followed her toward the stairwell.
