The fourteenth floor had a problem with its north-facing walls.
Not a structural problem — the building's bones were as sound as they had always been, the engineering firm Adrien had brought in for the restoration assessment had confirmed this with the thoroughness of people being paid to find issues and finding, to their professional disappointment, very few. The problem was optical. The north-facing walls on fourteen had a slightly different glass specification from the rest of the building — an older batch, sourced from a different supplier, with a marginally different refractive index — and this produced, at certain times of day, a light behavior that was inconsistent with the rest of the hotel's visual vocabulary.
For most purposes this was irrelevant. For Elara's purposes it was a problem she had been trying to solve for two days.
She had been on fourteen since two in the afternoon, measuring and remeasuring, running the light modeling software and comparing it against what the room was actually doing, trying to determine whether the inconsistency could be incorporated into Moon Sequence as a feature or whether it needed to be worked around as a flaw. By five she had a working hypothesis. By six she had enough data to take back to the suite and build a solution. By six thirty she was gathering her equipment and trying to remember if she had eaten anything since the morning.
She pressed the call button for the glass elevator.
The elevator arrived, the doors opened, and she stepped in with her equipment case and her laptop bag and her sketchbook and the particular organized exhaustion of a long day of solitary technical work. She pressed seventeen. The doors closed.
On the descent from fourteen to thirteen, the elevator stopped.
Not gradually — not the deceleration of a scheduled stop, not the gentle settling of a system responding to a call. It stopped mid-movement, abruptly enough that she put a hand on the glass wall to steady herself. The lights went out.
One second of complete darkness. Two. Then the emergency system engaged: a low warm amber, the backup lighting doing its job, filling the elevator car with a light that was sufficient for the situation and deeply different from anything she would have chosen.
She looked around the car. Four walls of glass, the atrium and the floors visible through three of them — the building continuing its life around her, indifferent to her particular stillness. Through the glass behind her, the bay was still bright with late-afternoon light, the water catching the sun at the angle she had been watching all week, always slightly different, always teaching her something new.
The intercom crackled. She pressed the button and gave the situation report to whoever answered — stopped between thirteen and fourteen, emergency lighting active, no technical alarm triggered — and was told that the maintenance team had been notified and estimated restoration in fifteen to twenty minutes, possibly longer.
She released the intercom button and turned back to the view.
The doors opened behind her.
She turned. Adrien stepped in from the thirteenth floor landing — he had come from above, which meant he had been on fourteen or above when the power dropped and had walked down rather than waiting. He took in the situation without apparent surprise, checked the intercom panel in the way of someone confirming what they already knew, and then moved to the far corner of the car and stood there.
The amber light was not kind to either of them in the way of flattery. It was honest light — the light of situations rather than presentations, of circumstances rather than choices. She had always preferred honest light, professionally and otherwise, but she was aware that it asked something in return.
"Fifteen minutes," she said. "Maybe more."
"I know." He had spoken to the same maintenance line, apparently.
She turned back to the window. The bay stretched out below them, the city on the left curving around the harbor, the open water on the right going to the horizon. She had looked at this view many times from inside the building but always through glass she was surveying, glass that was data. Looking at it now, trapped in the amber light with nowhere to go and nothing she was supposed to be doing, she looked at it differently.
It was very beautiful. She had known this intellectually. She was feeling it now.
Behind her, Adrien was a particular quality of still that she had learned to distinguish from other kinds of still. Not waiting-for-something still. Present still. The stillness of someone who had decided to be where they were rather than somewhere else.
The minutes passed. She was not uncomfortable in the silence — she had learned his silence well enough by now that it was not the silence of withdrawal but the silence of someone who did not spend words on situations that didn't require them. She could work in this silence. She had been working in it, more or less, for eleven days.
Then he said: "Which part stayed with you?"
She turned.
He was looking at the window, not at her. His coat was on, collar up slightly, and in the amber light his face had the quality of something that had been revealed rather than seen — the honest-light effect, the thing you couldn't avoid.
"The piano," she said. "From the ballroom. Which part are you asking about?"
"The part you keep coming back to. I've heard you in the ballroom twice, late at night. Standing outside the door."
She had not known he knew about that. She filed it away — the fact that he noticed, and the fact that he was telling her he noticed, both of which were data points she had not previously had.
"The eight notes," she said. "The phrase that gets to the same place every time and stops there."
He was quiet for a moment. The elevator hung in the amber light above the city and the sea.
"That's the part she could never get past either," he said.
She looked at him.
He was still looking at the window, and she could see in his profile the specific quality of someone saying something they have held for a long time and are saying now not because they decided to but because the particular conditions of the moment — the amber light, the stillness, the glass and the sea and the absence of any context that required him to be managed — have made it sayable.
"She wrote it when she was twenty-two," he said. "She said it was about the feeling of arriving somewhere you couldn't stay. Getting close enough to see it, and then—" He stopped. The elevator hummed faintly around its stillness. "She played the first eight bars for three years and never wrote the next one. She said she'd know when she was ready."
Elara thought about the recording she had watched on her laptop. The piece building to that phrase, and through it, and to the ending that satisfied. The ending Selene had eventually found. The ending the ballroom still didn't know.
"She wrote past it eventually," Elara said. "I heard the full piece in the archive recording."
He turned then. Looked at her directly, with the quality of attention that was becoming familiar — not comfortable, she did not think it would ever be entirely comfortable, but recognizable, her own attention recognizing it the way a key recognizes a lock it was made for. "When?"
"Three years before she disappeared. She performed it once, at a small venue. Someone filmed it on a phone." She paused. "She found the next note. The piece has an ending."
He held her gaze for a moment, and she let him look, because she understood that she had just given him something and she was not going to manage that by looking away.
"I didn't know that," he said.
"I know."
The lights came on.
Not gradually — suddenly, the full building power restoring all at once, the emergency amber replaced by the elevator's standard lighting, the building coming back to itself around them. The elevator shifted and began to move, completing its interrupted descent.
They did not speak for the remaining floors.
At the lobby level the doors opened. Elara picked up her equipment case. She stepped out and walked toward the service corridor, and at the turn she stopped and looked back.
Through the glass wall of the elevator shaft, she could see the car at lobby level, Adrien still inside it. He had not yet pressed a button for another floor. He was standing with one hand on the panel — at the level of the button for seventeen, her floor, pressed or almost pressed, she could not tell from this distance.
She stood there for a moment longer than was necessary.
Then she walked on, and the corridor received her, and she carried the thing he had given her — the story of the eight bars and the note that was waited for — up seventeen floors to the suite, where she sat at the window and looked at the bay and thought about all the things that get to the edge of their own completion and stop there, and all the things that eventually find the next note, and the difference between those two categories, and which one she was in.
