Theo had arranged three chairs in a triangle around a single speaker cabinet the size of a small suitcase, and he had placed a glass of water on top of the cabinet, and he had not explained why until they were all seated.
"Watch the water," he said, and pressed play.
The recording began as Elara remembered it from her own late-night research: the sound of an event, a gathering, the ambient texture of an audience settling into a space. Conversation, movement, the specific acoustic signature of a high-ceilinged room — she recognized the reverb character of The Moonwell's atrium without being told that was where it had been recorded. Then the music beginning, the particular timbre of Selene at the piano, carrying across ten years of digital compression with its essential quality intact.
For three minutes it sounded like what it was. A recording of a beautiful performance in a beautiful space.
Then Theo adjusted the filter.
The water moved.
Not dramatically — not the surface tension-breaking churn of a speaker pushed to its limits. A slow, rhythmic agitation, the water's surface patterning in standing waves that had no relationship to the music they could hear, responding instead to something below the audible register, something the glass was translating into motion because motion was the only language available to it for frequencies that human ears could not fully process.
"Eighteen hertz," Theo said. "It's been there since the recording begins. I almost missed it — it's deep in the noise floor. But once you filter for it, it doesn't go away."
Adrien was looking at the water. His hands were in his lap and his expression was the contained version, but she had learned to read the contained version well enough to know that he was processing something rather than feeling nothing.
"Infrasound," Elara said.
"Eighteen hertz is at the boundary of human hearing. You don't hear it as a sound, exactly — you feel it. Pressure in the chest. A sense of unease, of being watched, of ambient wrongness." Theo picked up a printed page from the table beside him and held it out. "There's documented research going back to the nineties. In high enough concentrations, sustained infrasound at this frequency causes reported visual anomalies — people see things moving in their peripheral vision that aren't there. They stop trusting their own perception."
Elara took the paper and read it. The research was real — she had encountered references to it before, in technical discussions of acoustic design and its unintended effects. She had never considered it as a deliberate application.
"Someone chèn nó vào source âm thanh chính," she said, looking up.
"Into the main system, yes. Running underneath everything else. The music, the ambient sound design, all of it had this underneath, for the full duration of the event." Theo turned off the filter and the water stilled. "Anyone in that room for more than forty minutes would have been operating with compromised perceptual reliability. Not dramatically — not hallucinations, not incapacitation. Just — a persistent, low-level conviction that what they were seeing might not be what was actually there."
The room was quiet for a moment.
"Someone wanted the people in that room not to trust what they saw," Elara said.
"More specifically," Mira said, from her chair — she had come with them, had been silent until now — "someone wanted any witnesses to a specific event to be unreliable witnesses afterward. If something happened in that room and people saw it, their testimony would be compromised. They'd second-guess themselves. Others would second-guess them."
Elara looked at Adrien. He was still looking at the water glass, which was still now, its surface flat and honest.
"Who had access to the sound source?" she asked Theo.
"The main mixing board was in the production booth on level two. Standard access for technical crew, any of the production team." Theo paused. "But the infrasound wasn't being generated from the main board. The frequency is too specific, too sustained — it would have required a dedicated generator, something separate from the primary system. Something someone brought in and connected independently."
"Which requires," Elara said slowly, "knowing the technical infrastructure well enough to connect something to it without it appearing in the official system logs."
"Yes."
She looked at Adrien again. He was looking at her now, not the water.
"You knew," she said. Not an accusation. An observation, stated as clearly as she would state any measurement result.
A pause. Long enough to be a decision. "I suspected," he said. "After the investigation concluded. The report said the event had proceeded without technical anomalies. But two of the witnesses I spoke to afterward — people who had been in the atrium for the full performance — described the same thing independently. A feeling of unreality. Of not being certain what they had seen." His voice was even, precise, the voice he used when he was handling something carefully. "I didn't have a mechanism for it. I had two corroborating accounts and a conclusion I couldn't prove."
"Until now," Elara said.
"Until now."
Mira had opened her laptop and was typing. "This changes the witness testimony question significantly. If infrasound was being used deliberately, any account from someone who was in that atrium for more than—" she looked at Theo "—how long before effects would be noticeable?"
"Thirty minutes at that intensity. Forty to be reliable."
"Any account from someone in that atrium for forty minutes or more is methodologically compromised. Which is everyone who was there for the full event." She looked up. "Including you," she said to Adrien.
He held her gaze without flinching. "Including me."
Elara thought about the footage — Adrien at nineteen, running through the atrium after the cut. Had he been in the room for the full performance? She didn't know. She made a note to check the earlier sections of the footage.
"There's something else," Theo said.
He said it in the tone he had used when he first sat down beside her at the reflecting pool — the tone of someone who has been waiting for the right moment to deliver a second piece of information and has calculated that the first piece has now been sufficiently processed.
Elara looked at him.
"I've been running frequency analysis on the building's current acoustic environment. Background noise, structural resonance, the works — standard practice before I spec the sound design for the installation." He picked up another sheet. "There's a frequency present in the building right now. Not eighteen hertz. Different. But it's not structural — it's not the building settling or the HVAC or any of the systems I've identified. It's deliberate. It's being generated."
The room was very quiet.
"Right now," Mira said.
"It's been consistent for the five days I've been running the analysis." He set the sheet down. "Someone has a generator running in this building. Or close enough to this building that the frequency is present in the walls. I haven't found the source yet."
Elara looked at the glass of water on the speaker cabinet. Still. Flat. Perfectly reflecting the ceiling above it.
She thought about the basement control room with its blinking power indicator. She thought about Lucien Valez sharing a damaging article at eleven at night. She thought about the line in Selene's handwriting: *L. knows. Don't let him control the sequence.*
She thought about Mira's question this morning — whether the trust she had developed was based on what she had seen.
She looked at Adrien across the small studio space, the amber and grey of a Valmere afternoon coming through the window behind him. He was looking at Theo, processing the new information, and she watched him do it — watched the quality of attention he brought to things he needed to understand, the specific way his mind worked through evidence, methodical and thorough and without the shortcuts that came from wanting a particular answer.
She thought: *this is a person I have been watching for eleven days, and what I have seen is consistent. Not comfortable, not easy, not without complication. But consistent.*
"Tai nạn Aster Hall," she said. She said it to the room, but she was looking at Adrien. "Hệ thống âm thanh bị can thiệp."
He looked at her. His expression was careful in the way of someone who has known a thing for a long time and is now watching it be named.
"It's one of the reasons I needed to find someone who had been in a compromised room and survived it," he said. "Someone who would know what to look for."
It was the most honest sentence he had said in twelve days. It was also the sentence she had been half-afraid of, the one that confirmed what Mira had asked about this morning: the specific reason he had chosen her. She sat with it.
"You should have told me that at the beginning," she said.
"Yes," he said. No justification. Just the acknowledgment.
The afternoon light shifted through the window. The water glass sat still on the speaker cabinet.
Theo gathered his papers. Mira was still typing. Outside, Valmere went about its day with complete indifference, and in the walls of the building around them, at a frequency none of them could hear, something was still running.
