Mira found it at nine seventeen in the evening, in a subfolder labeled with a string of digits that meant nothing and everything.
They had been in suite 1701 for three hours by then — Elara at her main workstation, Mira at the secondary screen she had set up on the far end of the worktable, both of them moving through the building's archive server with the methodical patience of people who had accepted that what they were looking for might not want to be found. Adrien was in a Solace Holdings board meeting that had been scheduled for two weeks, the kind of obligation that could not be moved without raising questions he was not ready to answer. He had said he would be back by ten.
The archive server was extensive. The Moonwell had been, in its operational life, a meticulously documented institution — an artefact of an era when luxury hotels generated paperwork the way they generated revenue, in large consistent quantities. Financial records. Guest registers. Event programs. Staff schedules. Technical logs. And security footage, backed up to a secondary server at the end of each operating month, stored in a directory structure that would have made sense to someone who had designed it and become progressively less sense to anyone who hadn't.
Mira had been working through the security footage directory for an hour and a half when she stopped typing.
"Elara."
The tone was the one Mira used when something was important, not the one she used when something was urgent. Elara crossed to the secondary screen.
The file was unremarkable in appearance — a standard video file, named with a fourteen-digit number, stored three levels deep in a subfolder chain that was labeled in the same meaningless-digit format as its contents. Its creation date was ten years ago. Its last-accessed date was the same as its creation date. No one had opened it since it was made.
"The filename," Mira said, and pointed.
Elara looked at the fourteen digits. Then she looked at the directory path above it. Then she understood: the digits were a date-time stamp, in a format that the building's original backup system had used — year, month, day, hour, minute, second. The file had been created at 22:07 on the night of the event. Two hours and seven minutes into a performance that had begun at eight and ended in silence.
"That's—"
"The night she disappeared. Yes." Mira opened the file.
The footage was from the atrium camera — ground level, wide angle, the same camera position as the files Elara had already reviewed. It began normally. The lobby in evening mode, the reflecting pool dark without the installation running, the ambient lighting of a hotel managing a major event. Guests moving through the space. Staff at their positions. The professional choreography of a well-run venue doing its job.
Selene appeared at 21:43:17.
She came through the east entrance — the main entrance, the one facing the bay — wearing something dark, her hair up, moving with the particular directed quality of someone navigating between one responsibility and another. She crossed the lobby without stopping, heading toward the ballroom corridor. At 21:43:52 she paused at the corridor entrance and turned, briefly, to look back at the lobby.
Elara looked at the lobby behind her in the frame. In the corner nearest the east entrance, barely in frame, standing in a way that suggested he had arrived recently and had not yet decided where to go: Adrien. Nineteen years old, in a dark jacket, looking at his sister from across the lobby with an expression that the camera's resolution and the distance made difficult to read but not impossible.
He was worried.
Selene looked at him for a moment. Then she turned and went into the ballroom corridor. The timestamp read 21:44:08.
The footage continued. Adrien remained in the lobby corner. People moved around him. At 21:52 he took out his phone and appeared to send a message. At 22:03 he moved toward the ballroom corridor entrance and then stopped — something on his phone, a message received. He looked at it and his expression changed.
At 22:10:59, the footage cut.
The next frame was 22:18:03. Seven minutes and four seconds, gone.
And in the first frame after the cut: the lobby in what looked like mild confusion, several guests stopped in their movement, staff members converging on the ballroom corridor entrance. And Adrien — no longer in the corner, no longer still — moving through the lobby at speed, pushing past a guest who moved aside for him, heading for the ballroom corridor with the specific quality of movement that Elara had no precise word for, because the word she kept almost-using was the wrong one, and she did not use wrong words for things this important.
She had been looking at this frame for perhaps thirty seconds when she became aware that she was not breathing normally.
She took a breath. Deliberate, measured.
"The seven minutes," she said. Her voice came out level, which she noted with a remote sort of professional satisfaction.
"Gone," Mira said. "Not corrupted — there's no degradation in the frames on either side of the cut, no evidence of a technical failure. Someone edited this. Precisely. Knew exactly which seven minutes to remove and removed only those."
"Which means they knew what happened in those seven minutes."
"Or knew what would happen." Mira's voice was careful. "This was backed up the same night. The file was created at 22:07, during the event. Someone edited it in real time or very shortly after and hid the edited version in a location that would be difficult to find without knowing where to look."
Elara looked at the frame of Adrien at nineteen, running.
She made the decision in the way she made design decisions — not as a discrete moment of deliberation but as the surfacing of something that had been accumulating. She would not show him this tonight. Not because she was protecting him — she had learned enough about him to know that protection was not what he needed and not something he would receive well. But because she needed to understand more before she put this in front of him. She needed context for those seven minutes before she asked him to look at the absence of them.
"We save this," she said. "External drive, not the building server. We don't tell Adrien yet."
Mira looked at her steadily. "Is that the investigative reason or the other reason?"
"Both," Elara said. "And I know that doesn't make it uncomplicated."
Mira held her gaze for a moment. Then she nodded and began copying the file.
They were still working when the suite door opened at ten past ten.
Adrien came in carrying the particular tiredness of someone who has spent four hours performing competence in a room where competence was the minimum expected. He loosened his collar. He looked at the two of them at the worktable and at the secondary screen, which Mira had minimized but not closed.
Then he looked at Elara.
She met his eyes. She did not know what was in her expression — she had less control over it than usual, because she had been sitting with the image of him at nineteen for an hour and the image had done something to her understanding of him that she had not yet finished processing. The Adrien in front of her was ten years from that frame. Ten years of standing at the threshold of the ballroom. Ten years of keeping a room exactly as it had been left. Ten years of a building the size of a grief, maintained and preserved and waiting.
"What did you find?" he asked.
His voice was quiet. He knew they had found something — she could see that he knew, that he had read it in her face in the two seconds since he came in, that for all his control he was not, in this room, with her, able to pretend that nothing was happening between one expression and the next.
She looked at the minimized screen. Then she looked back at him.
"Security footage," she said. "From the night of the event. Two hours of the atrium lobby camera." She paused. "Seven minutes are missing from the middle."
The silence in the suite was the particular silence of a fact that has been known for a long time being said for the first time in a room with another person.
"I know about the seven minutes," he said.
"I know you do."
He looked at the screen — the minimized file, the window that showed only the desktop behind it. "I've been looking for that footage for ten years."
"We found it in a hidden subfolder. It was archived the night it happened and not accessed since."
Another silence. He crossed the room and sat down in the chair beside her workstation — not across from her, beside her, the proximity of someone who has stopped managing distance — and looked at the closed laptop screen.
"I don't want to watch it tonight," he said.
"I know," she said. "We weren't going to ask you to."
He looked at her then, and his expression had the quality of the elevator, of the ballroom, of the rain-wet balcony — the quality of being more present than was strictly comfortable, more readable, the control still there but thinner, a membrane rather than a wall.
"The meeting tonight," he said. "Board of Solace Holdings. Three members who were also investors in the original Moonwell at the time of the event." A pause. "Lucien Valez was the fourth."
Elara went still.
"He was not at tonight's meeting. He resigned from the board eight years ago, after the first attempt to reopen the hotel failed." Adrien looked at the window, the dark bay beyond it. "He has been requesting reinstatement for two years. The timing of his request corresponds with the announcement of Moon Sequence."
Mira had stopped typing. The suite was very quiet.
"He wants back in before the reopening," Elara said. "Before the building is full of people again."
"Before Moon Sequence shows them something he doesn't want shown," Adrien said.
Elara looked at the footage file on the external drive. Seven missing minutes, found after ten years. A man positioning himself to control what the building's reopening night would reveal.
She thought about Selene's note. *Don't let him control the sequence.*
She thought about the frequency Theo had found still running in the walls.
Outside, Valmere gleamed on the water, beautiful and indifferent. The bay held the city's reflection without comment, as it always had, as it would continue to do regardless of what they found.
