He unlocked the door of room 1206 himself this time.
Elara stood beside him in the corridor and watched him do it — the key, the old key, the one she now understood he had been carrying for ten years. The specific quality of the movement was different from every other time she had watched him open a door: less efficient, more deliberate, as though the lock required more attention than it did, or as though the attention he was giving it was not actually for the lock.
The door opened.
She had been in the room that morning — had spent perhaps ten minutes in it, moving carefully, photographing without touching. She had thought she understood what it was. Standing in the doorway again, beside him, she understood it differently.
From the inside, the room had been a space she was reading. From beside him, the room was a space he had been inhabiting — not physically, not in any literal sense, but in the sense that a loss inhabits the person who holds it. The room's quality of stopped time had the same character as the quality of stopped time she had noticed in him: not frozen, not decayed, but maintained. Carefully, deliberately, at cost.
He went in.
She followed, and closed the door behind them, and stood at the room's center while he moved to the window. He stood with his back to her for a moment, looking at the cliff face and the slice of grey sea visible at the far edge of the frame. She did not try to read his back. She waited.
He turned and went to the desk. He looked at the notebook — open to the same page she had photographed, the musical notation and the hurried text and the final instruction at the bottom. He did not touch it. He read it in the room rather than from a photograph, which was a different kind of reading, and she let him do it in silence.
When he finished, he opened the desk drawer.
His hand went directly to what he was looking for, without searching — he knew where it was. He produced a small bundle, tied with a length of cream ribbon, narrow and slightly frayed at the ends in the way of ribbon that had been tied and untied many times. He set it on the desk beside the notebook.
She looked at it.
The stack was perhaps twenty photographs, the square format and slightly soft focus of polaroids — the specific visual character of images made without the clinical accuracy of digital capture, with all the warmth and imprecision of a technology that required the photographer to wait for the image to arrive rather than receiving it instantly.
"I've had these for ten years," he said. He was looking at the bundle, not at her. "They were in the room when it was sealed. I inventoried everything when I closed it — I didn't touch anything, but I catalogued what was here." A pause. "I knew these were here. I knew what some of them would show."
She understood what he was telling her. Not that he had not known. That he had known, and had needed this moment — this specific convergence of the notebook's instructions and the pool's geometry and her presence in the room — before he was ready to look.
"Would it help to look together?" she asked.
He looked at her then. The direct look, the unmanaged one, the one that always found her fully present rather than partially. "Yes," he said.
They sat together on the bed's edge — she had not consciously chosen the position, had simply moved toward the natural center of the room, and he had done the same, and the bed was there. It was not, in the room, charged with anything other than what it was: a surface in a room they were sharing for a specific purpose. She was aware of his proximity — she was always aware of his proximity — but the awareness was different here, quieter, muted by the weight of what was on the desk.
He untied the ribbon.
They went through the photographs one at a time, Elara holding each one to the window light and then passing it to him, establishing a rhythm that felt right without discussion.
Most of the photographs were what she had expected from the room's other contents: private images, the visual record of a life. Selene at the roof's stone bench, turned partially toward the camera, laughing at something outside the frame — the laugh open and unguarded in the way of someone who has forgotten they might be photographed. Selene at the piano in the ballroom, in a focused state that Elara recognized as the absorption of someone working. Selene and Mira Elara did not know, a dark-haired woman whose face she did not recognize, on the promenade below the hotel, both of them eating something from paper bags with expressions of straightforward pleasure.
And then — not dramatically, not placed differently in the stack — three photographs of a man she had not yet met in person and would have recognized anywhere.
Lucien Valez was taller in photographs than she had expected, and less overtly imposing — his appearance was the kind of refined that took significant effort to make look effortless, the pressed shirt and the specific quality of his haircut speaking to someone who understood presentation as a professional tool. He was present in these three photographs in three different configurations: in one, standing near the bar of the unopened restaurant, talking to two people whose backs were to the camera; in another, in the corridor outside the ballroom, alone, looking at something off-frame with an expression she could not quite categorize; in the third, beside Selene.
This was the one she held to the light the longest.
Selene and Lucien, in the atrium near the reflecting pool, at an event — there were other people visible at the edges of the frame. He was standing slightly behind her and to her right, positioned in the space that implied familiarity without requiring it. His expression was the composed expression of someone at a professional function, attentive, appropriately warm. Selene was looking at the camera.
Elara had spent enough time with photographs of Selene — the archive images, the concert footage, the informal polaroids she was now holding — to read Selene's expressions with some confidence. What she saw in this photograph was not discomfort, not fear, not overt distress. What she saw was the specific quality of someone who was aware of exactly where another person was standing relative to them and had made a conscious decision about what their face was doing in response to that awareness.
Management. The word that came to her was management. Selene was managing the proximity of the man behind her, and she was doing it in front of a camera because she knew the camera was there, and the combination — the management, the camera, the particular directness of her gaze — said clearly: *I know this is being recorded. I am being looked at. Look back.*
"She wanted this photograph taken," Elara said quietly.
He was looking at the same image. "She must have asked someone to take it. She had the camera. She had to have given it to someone and positioned herself where she needed to be."
"She set it up." Elara looked at Selene's face — the directed gaze, the composure that was not ease. "She was building evidence. This photograph, the notebook, the sequence built into the building. She was building a case, methodically, and she was making sure she left enough pieces that someone could reconstruct it even if she wasn't there to hand it over."
He did not say anything for a moment. She looked at him — his profile, the line of his jaw, the way he was looking at his sister's face in a photograph taken perhaps a week before she disappeared.
"She was very methodical," he said. The words were simple. The weight they carried was not.
"She trusted someone would come back for it," Elara said. "She trusted you would come back."
"She trusted someone would," he said carefully. "She couldn't have known it would take ten years."
"No. But she built it to last." Elara set the photograph carefully on the desk. "A building designed to hold truth until the right light came along."
He looked at the photograph a moment longer. Then he set it beside hers and looked at the stack of remaining images.
They went through the rest in the same rhythm, passing and receiving, and when they reached the end of the stack she set the photographs in a neat arrangement on the desk and they sat in the quiet of room 1206 and said nothing for a while, and the room held them the way it had been holding everything else for ten years: carefully, completely, without judgment.
When they left, he carried the ribbon and folded it into his coat pocket. She did not ask him why. She understood that the ribbon was not a piece of evidence — it was something else, something smaller and more personal, and some things did not require explanation.
In the corridor, before they reached the lift, he said: "Mira. I want to bring her fully in."
"She's already in."
"Officially. As part of the team working on this." He paused. "She has access to resources I don't have for tracing financial connections. And she knows how to operate in the press environment in a way that Theo and I don't." Another pause, shorter. "And she is, clearly, someone you trust with things that matter."
Elara looked at him. The specific quality of what he was saying was not lost on her — the care with which he had framed it, the acknowledgment implicit in the final sentence. He was not just expanding the working group. He was, in the specific language of someone who had not expanded his circle of trust in ten years, expanding it.
"I'll tell her," Elara said.
He nodded once. They walked to the lift together, and she pressed the button, and while they waited she thought about a woman who had built a truth into a building's foundations and a ribbon that had been tied and untied and tied again, and a man who had been carrying a key for ten years, waiting for the moment when the right person came back to use it.
