Theo had set up the projection screen in the archive room because the archive room had the right dimensions — long enough for a useful throw distance, narrow enough that everyone in the room could see the image clearly without competing sight lines. He had been precise about the setup, in the way he was precise about all technical configurations, and when the four of them were seated — Elara and Adrien on one side of the table, Mira and Theo on the other — the image from the archive footage was clear and stable and exactly the size required.
Elara had chosen this room deliberately. Not the sound studio, not the atrium, not the open space of any of the floors she had been working in. A room with a closing door and a surface without windows, a room that felt contained. She was aware that what she was about to show required a certain quality of collective attention, and collective attention was harder to maintain in spaces that competed with it.
She had the footage cued to 21:55. Eight minutes before the cut.
"I'm going to play a section," she said. "Don't watch the people. Watch the light."
Mira, who had not been in the sound studio when they went through the footage the first time, was looking at the screen with the particular focused quiet of someone who had been told to pay attention and had decided to pay all of it. Theo had his notebook open. Adrien was watching the screen in the contained way that was his default and that she had learned did not indicate detachment.
She pressed play.
The footage ran. The atrium lobby in the late stages of an event — the ambient activity of a gathering past its peak, some guests already leaving, the main performance concluded in the ballroom but the evening not yet over. The lighting was complex, as it always was for a major event at The Moonwell: the base atmospheric lighting of the hotel's standard system, supplemented by installation-specific elements, supplemented by the practical task lighting of the working event.
At 21:58:22, in the upper right section of the frame, a light source changed.
"There," Elara said, and paused the footage.
She had marked the location with a notation on the frame — not in the original footage, in her working copy. A small circle, placed at the precise point where the change had occurred. She stood and pointed to it.
"That's a supplementary source. Not part of the main atmospheric system, not part of the installation design — I have Selene's original design documentation and this source is not in it." She looked at Theo. "It's operating at approximately 4000 Kelvin."
Theo was already looking at his notes. "That's significantly warmer than standard installation sources of that period. Someone wanted that specific color temperature."
"It's warm enough to affect color perception at high intensity," Elara said. "Not 2400 — that's Selene's register, that's what she worked in. This is something else. Something introduced into the visual environment specifically to interfere with it."
Mira leaned forward. "Interfere how?"
"Color perception is contextual. The visual system doesn't read color in absolute terms — it reads it relative to ambient light. If you introduce a strong 4000-Kelvin source into a space calibrated for a different temperature, you shift the perceptual baseline. People begin to see the whole space slightly differently. Not dramatically — not in a way they'd notice consciously. But enough to make them uncertain about what they're seeing."
She pressed play again. The footage ran forward. The source in the upper right continued operating, barely visible but present. She paused at 22:01:14.
"By this point, this source has been running for three minutes. Anyone who has been in this space for the full evening — anyone who was calibrated to the installation's intended lighting — is now experiencing a subtle but measurable shift in their color perception baseline." She looked at the room. "Add the infrasound Theo identified, running for the full duration of the event. What do you have?"
"A room full of people who can't fully trust what they're seeing or feeling," Mira said. "Who will, if they later try to describe what happened, find their own memories less reliable than they should be."
"A room full of unreliable witnesses," Theo said. "To whatever happened in those seven minutes."
Elara pressed play again. The footage ran to 22:10:59 and cut. She let the silence of the cut sit for a moment, then advanced to 22:18:03.
"The source in the upper right is gone," she said. "Turned off during the seven minutes. Turned off because its job was done — the perceptual interference had been established, the witnesses had been compromised, whatever needed to happen had happened. And then the source was removed and the evening continued and the narrative was set."
The room was quiet.
"This didn't happen by accident," Adrien said. He said it quietly, to the table rather than to the room, and she heard in it the quality of something being said that had been known for a long time and was now having its evidence confirmed rather than its knowledge established. "Someone planned this in detail. The infrasound source, the supplementary light source, the edit of the footage — all of it required prior knowledge of the technical systems, prior access, prior preparation."
"Someone with access to the building's infrastructure," Theo said. "Not just the event night — days before, at minimum. You'd need time to install the infrasound generator and test the supplementary light source."
"Which brings us back to the control room," Elara said.
She looked at Adrien. He was looking at the frozen footage — the image of the lobby, seven minutes missing from its center, the supplementary light source absent from the upper right corner where it had been running.
"Tell us what we found down there," she said.
He looked at Theo, who opened his notebook to a marked page. Theo ran them through it efficiently: the basement control room, its contents, the specific equipment they had catalogued that morning. A secondary audio mixing board, older than the building's primary system, installed apparently during the original construction phase and never reflected in the official technical documentation. A signal generator capable of producing frequencies across the full audible and sub-audible range. And a lighting controller — a dedicated unit, separate from the main board, with its own power supply and its own output cabling running through the building's walls alongside the primary system's infrastructure.
"The cabling is still live," Theo said. "We haven't identified all the output points yet, but the controller is receiving power and the cabling is intact throughout the building."
"Someone has been using it," Elara said. "The power indicator was active when we found the room. The frequency you've been detecting in the building's current environment — it's coming from that room."
"Not from the original equipment," Theo said. "That's analogue, it would need physical operation. Someone has connected a secondary unit — newer, compact, could be left running without attention. We found the output port it's connected to but we haven't found the unit itself yet. It's somewhere in the building."
Mira's laptop was open. She had been typing while Theo spoke, and she looked up now with the expression that meant she had something. "Lucien Valez made four visits to The Moonwell in the past eighteen months. All through official channels — he has a standing relationship with the Solace Holdings facilities team through a legacy maintenance contract from the original construction. He's been in this building, with legitimate access, multiple times since you began the restoration process."
Adrien looked at her.
"He planted it," Elara said. "Not recently. He's been running it for months. Building up the infrasound exposure gradually, making the building feel wrong to anyone working in it, making the environment hostile to the kind of focused attention the installation requires." She paused. "Making me doubt my own perceptions."
The room was very quiet.
She thought about the quality of the building over the past three weeks. The way it had felt attentive, present, sometimes overwhelming. She had attributed most of this to the building's genuine optical and acoustic anomalies — Selene's built-in elements, the pool's impossible geometry, the ballroom's preserved acoustics. And some of it had been exactly that. But some of what she had been experiencing as the building's particular intensity might have been something else: a manufactured unease, introduced gradually, designed to make her less reliable to herself.
"We need to find the unit and remove it," she said. "And we need to do it without alerting Lucien that we've found it. Because once he knows we've found it, he'll move faster."
"Agreed," Adrien said.
"There's another thing," Theo said. He said it in the tone she recognized — the tone of the second piece of information, the one that had been held back. "The cabling from the control room runs throughout the building. Including to the atrium and the pool. Including to the ballroom." He paused. "The controller has output capability for both audio and lighting. If someone were operating it during Moon Sequence's opening night, they could override the installation's primary systems. Not the whole sequence — not if it's properly isolated — but the critical moments."
Elara looked at Adrien.
"The seven minutes," she said.
"Whatever happened then, he needed control of the environment to make it happen," Adrien said. "He used the same capability. He's trying to maintain the same capability now, in case he needs it again."
"He's planning to use it on opening night," Elara said. "Whatever Moon Sequence reveals — whatever Selene built in — he wants the ability to suppress it in real time."
The room absorbed this.
Then Mira set down her laptop. "Okay," she said. Her voice had the quality it always had when she had moved from analysis to action. "Then we need to be faster than him. We need to find the unit, isolate the primary sequence from the control room's override capability, and build in whatever Selene designed as the counter-measure before he knows we've done any of it."
Elara looked at the frozen footage on the screen — the lobby, the missing seven minutes, the absent light source in the upper right corner.
She thought about Selene in room 1206, writing instructions in the margin of a notebook in the early hours of a morning she might not have known would be her last. *Start from G. The pool knows where to send it.*
She thought: *you built this to wait. It waited. We're here.*
"Then let's start," she said.
Adrien stood first. Then Theo. Mira closed her laptop.
The four of them left the archive room and entered the corridor of The Moonwell, and above them, in the walls, a frequency ran that did not belong there, and below them, in the basement, a control room waited with its old equipment and its new addition, and around them the building attended to all of it in its particular way: steadily, completely, with the patience of something that has been holding a truth for a long time and knows, finally, that the holding is nearly done.
