Rémy sat in the archive room chair the way old men sit when they have been carrying something heavy for a long time and have finally set it down — not relaxed, exactly, but without the active tension of holding. His hands were on the table, flat, the hands of someone making a deliberate choice about what to do with them.
Mira had been retrieved from her cot in the inner room. She sat at the table's end with her laptop closed, which was a signal that she was attending to this as a person rather than as a researcher. Adrien was at the corner, standing, which was where he stood when he needed to think while being present. Elara was at the table's side, near enough to Rémy to be addressed directly.
"I know about the payments," Adrien said. He said it before Rémy had spoken, not to preempt but to release — to take the first weight of the thing off the old man's back. "I know the dates and the amounts. You don't need to explain the context. Just tell us what you saw."
Rémy looked at Adrien for a long moment. Something moved across his face — not relief, but a version of it, the specific quality of someone who has been carrying a secret alongside the person it concerns and has finally stopped carrying it alone.
"I was in the atrium," he said. "For the full performance. I was running a secondary check on the lighting system — a precaution, nothing in the event required it, but I was there." He paused. "I don't know, now, how much of what I experienced was real. I know about the infrasound, Mr. Solace. I've known for a long time — not the mechanism, but I knew something was wrong with what I remembered. I couldn't trust my own account."
"That was the point," Adrien said quietly.
"I know that now." Rémy's hands moved slightly on the table, then stilled. "In the seven minutes. I saw Selene in the corridor outside the ballroom. She was not alone. There was a man with her — I knew him, I had seen him with her many times during the residency. He had his hand on her arm. She was — not struggling, not in the way of someone trying to get away. But she was not there by choice. Something about her posture told me that, very clearly, even through everything else that was affecting my perception."
The room was very quiet.
"And then?" Mira said, carefully.
"They went through the service door at the corridor's end. The door that leads to the external staircase on the cliff face." He paused. "I should have followed. I should have called for help. Instead I stood in the atrium and doubted what I had seen for long enough that by the time I moved, there was nothing there."
"The infrasound," Elara said. "It made you doubt."
"Yes. I've told myself that, for ten years. It's true and it isn't sufficient." He looked at his hands. "Lucien Valez came to me four days later. He had a document — an account of the evening that explained everything as a voluntary departure, a personal crisis, a young woman who had been struggling and had chosen to leave without informing her family. He said there were witnesses who had seen her distressed in the weeks before." A pause. "And he said that if I signed the document and accepted the terms attached to it, my family would be secure. If I didn't, he would ensure that my failure to act in those seven minutes was characterized as negligence or worse."
The room held this.
"I signed," Rémy said. "I have lived with that signature for ten years."
Adrien said nothing. Elara looked at him — at the quality of his stillness, which was not the managed version. He was receiving this. All of it. Not processing it toward a strategic response but receiving it, in the way of someone who has been waiting to receive it and is not going to protect himself from the impact.
She thought: *he needed to hear this. Not for the investigation. For himself.*
After Rémy had been settled into the small room Mira had arranged for visiting team members, and after Mira had taken his statement in writing and secured the documentation that constituted his formal break from the confidentiality agreement, and after Theo had been called and briefed and had gone back to his own preparation, the archive room was quiet with two people in it.
Elara sat at the table.
Adrien had not moved from the corner.
She waited, because she understood that there was something he needed to say and that it would come when it was ready.
It came after perhaps four minutes.
"I found you three years ago," he said. "Not the way I told you — not by finding the Aldric Gallery work and making a professional judgment. I was already looking for someone whose work matched a specific technical pattern. I had been looking for two years." He paused. "The Aster Hall investigation report — the full technical version, not the published summary — described a lighting intervention that matched the pattern of what happened to Selene. The same type of supplementary source. The same frequency of infrasound in the venue recordings. The same seven-minute window in the security footage where the camera data was corrupted."
Elara said nothing. She was listening with the specific quality of attention she gave to information that mattered — not waiting to respond, not preparing a reaction, just receiving.
"I hired a specialist to analyze both incidents side by side. The probability of two unrelated accidents producing the same technical signature was negligible." He looked at the table. "And then I found you. The artist who had been in the room and had been blamed for the result." He paused. "I thought you might know something you didn't know you knew. I thought you might have seen something, in the specific way that a lighting designer sees a space, that would correspond to what Selene's space had held."
"And the rest," she said. "The project. The commission."
"I needed a real project to bring you here. A real project that would give you access to the building, to the systems, to everything that mattered." He was still looking at the table. "Moon Sequence was already Selene's concept — she had left enough documentation that I could construct a proposal from it. I used her work to bring the person I needed to find her work." A pause. "You should be angry."
"I am angry," she said.
He looked at her then.
"I am angry," she said again, "and I am not leaving. Those are two things that are both true at the same time, and you need to understand both of them, not as a unit but separately." She held his gaze. "You used her work and you used my situation and you didn't tell me the truth for three weeks. That is a real thing and it has a real weight and I'm not going to pretend otherwise."
"I know," he said.
"And," she continued, "I was in this building before you gave me a reason to be. The pool showed me something on the first test and I chose to stay. Selene's work called to something in me that had nothing to do with why you hired me, and the choice I made to go to floor twelve, to find the notebook, to rebuild the sequence — those were my choices, not extensions of your plan." She paused. "I need you to know that I know the difference. Between what you used me for and what I chose."
He was quiet for a long moment, with the quality of quiet she had come to know as real attention rather than managed silence.
"Why," he said, very quietly, "are you not leaving."
She looked at him. Not as a question that required analysis but as the question it actually was — a person, asking another person, in the specific register of someone who has said the thing that might end something and is genuinely uncertain of the result.
"Because I understand why you did it," she said. "Not excuse — understand. There is a difference." She paused. "And because when the lights went out in the elevator and I was managing the Aster Hall response, you moved so that you weren't blocking my view of the sea. You didn't ask. You didn't announce it. You just moved." She looked at her hands on the table, and then at him. "People who pay that kind of attention to other people's fear are not people I leave."
The archive room was very quiet.
"After this," he said. It was not a full sentence.
"After this," she confirmed. The understanding between them of what *after this* meant — after opening night, after Lucien, after the sequence ran and the truth was shown — was complete without specification.
Mira knocked and put her head in: "Lucien just confirmed a second meeting. He wants to discuss creative direction." She paused. "His words. Creative direction."
Elara looked at Adrien. The weight of everything they had just said was still in the room, would remain in the room, would be there on the other side of this conversation. *After this.*
"He doesn't know what we've found," she said.
"Not yet," Adrien said. "And we are going to keep it that way until eleven seventeen on opening night."
