She left at seven in the morning without telling anyone.
Not because she was running — she had told herself this clearly before she walked out the service entrance, standing in the cool morning air of the cliff approach with her coat buttoned and her bag over her shoulder and the specific quality of purpose that was different from the specific quality of flight. She knew the difference. She had spent three years learning the difference.
She was not running. She was going somewhere she could think without the building thinking alongside her.
The path from The Moonwell to the harbor took twelve minutes at a walk, and she did not hurry it. The city was in its early configuration — the cleaning crews on the promenade, the first café opening its shutters, a delivery van stopped in the narrow street above the harbor with its hazards on. She moved through it and let it be ordinary around her, which was what she needed: the ordinary texture of a city going about its existence, indifferent to everything that was happening in a glass building on a cliff.
At the harbor she did not stop. She kept walking east, past the ferry terminal, past the fish market just setting up its stalls, past the working end of the harbor where the boats she had never looked at closely were moored in their practical rows — no glass, no architectural ambition, just the specific functional beauty of things designed to do a job in difficult conditions.
The old dock district began after the fish market. It was not a tourist area. The stone was older, the buildings lower, the streets narrower and less maintained. There were repair yards for marine equipment, and storage buildings, and a small chandlery with a hand-painted sign that looked like it had been there since before her parents were born. She walked through it and felt, with each block, the specific relief of a person who has been living inside something very intense stepping outside its radius.
She was angry.
She let herself feel it clearly, without managing it into something more refined. She was angry that she had been chosen for reasons she had not been told. She was angry that the project she had built her return around, the work she had put three weeks of herself into, had been constructed partly as a mechanism to use her specific history as a tool. She was angry that she had trusted incrementally, carefully, over three weeks, and that the thing she had trusted had a dimension she had not been given access to.
She was also aware that the anger was not the whole of what she felt. She had told him this — had said *I am angry and I am not leaving* — and the statement had been true when she made it, and it was still true now. The anger was real and complete on its own terms, and it did not negate the other things, and the other things did not negate it. She had learned, slowly and at some cost, that feelings did not have to compete with each other. You could be angry at someone's choices and still understand why they made them. You could feel used and still recognize the genuine from the instrumental. These were not contradictions that required resolution. They were the normal complexity of caring about someone.
She arrived at the water's edge at the far end of the old dock district.
There was a small concrete pier, functional, not pretty, extending perhaps thirty meters into the bay. She walked to its end and stood there with her hands in her pockets and looked at the water below her.
The bay at this end was different from the bay at the harbor. Less organized. The water was darker, the bottom less visible, the surface carrying the specific texture of open water rather than the managed surface of a protected anchorage. It moved in a way that was not decorative. She found this useful.
She thought about what she had told Adrien: *people who pay that kind of attention to other people's fear are not people I leave.*
It was true. It was also not the complete picture. The complete picture was that she had been falling toward something since the first week in Valmere, and the falling had its own logic, and the revelation of his reasons had not changed the direction of the falling. It had complicated it — had added weight and texture and a dimension of difficulty that would need to be worked through rather than around. But it had not reversed it.
This was either wisdom or something she would need to revisit. She was not certain which. She was certain that she could not make the determination right now, at the end of a concrete pier in the old dock district, on the morning after a night that had contained more than most weeks.
What she was certain of: she was going back.
Not for him — not only for him. She was going back for Selene, whose sequence she was the only person in Valmere qualified to complete. She was going back for the work, which was real regardless of the circumstances that had produced it. She was going back because the thing Lucien Valez had done — to Selene, to her, to every artist whose work he had treated as a resource to be controlled — deserved to be answered, and she was one of two people who could answer it correctly.
She was going back because she had told him *after this* and she had meant it, and she was not someone who said things she didn't mean.
Her phone rang.
Mira's name on the screen. She answered.
"Rémy met with Lucien last night," Mira said, without preliminary. "We don't know what was said. But Lucien knows Rémy has broken his silence."
Elara turned away from the water. "Is Rémy safe?"
"He's in the building. Adrien moved him to one of the interior rooms last night — I think he anticipated this." A pause. "The timeline has changed. Lucien will move faster now. We have five days to opening night."
Five days.
Elara was already walking back along the pier toward the dock district. "I'm twenty minutes away. Tell Adrien I'm coming back."
"He didn't ask where you were," Mira said. "I'm just telling you he's been in the atrium since six."
Elara processed this. "Tell him anyway."
She moved through the old dock district at a pace that was not quite running but was the pace of someone who had finished the thinking they needed to do and had arrived at the next thing. The city came back around her as she walked east — the ordinary morning returning to its ordinary register, the harbor and the promenade and the glass towers catching the morning light.
The Moonwell was visible on the cliff when she came around the harbor's curve. It was always visible from here, if you were looking — the building's glass face picking up the morning light in its specific way, the building making its particular argument about what light could do when given the right surfaces. She looked at it the way she had looked at it on her first morning: with the specific attention of someone who was trying to understand what she was looking at.
She understood more now.
The service entrance. The lobby. Adrien standing by the reflecting pool, not looking up until she was close enough that looking up was inevitable.
"Rémy," she said.
"Mira briefed me," he said. "He's secure."
"Lucien will move before opening night."
"Yes." He looked at her — directly, with the quality she had come to know as his unmanaged attention. "Are you—"
"I'm fine," she said. "I needed to think. I've thought." She met his gaze. "I'm back. Let's work."
Something in his face shifted — not visibly, but she had learned to read the changes that were not visible. He nodded once.
"Five days," he said.
"Enough," she said, and meant it, and looked at the reflecting pool, and the pool sent its light in its impossible direction, and it felt like the building agreeing.
