The atrium below was filling.
Elara stood at the third-floor railing and watched the guests arrive — the specific social choreography of an opening night, the greetings and the circuit of the room and the particular quality of people who had come to see something and were already forming opinions about the building before the installation began. Two hundred people, approximately, exactly as planned, the atrium's scale containing the crowd without crowding it. The reflecting pool at the center, lit for the social hour in the ambient setting that did not reveal the sequence, was drawing attention without explanation — people stopped near it, looked down at their reflections, felt the specific quality of the space without being able to name it.
She had designed the social hour lighting for exactly this purpose. Not to show — to prepare. To begin the calibration of the audience's perceptions before the sequence started, to acclimatize them to the quality of attention the building required. She had done this deliberately and it was working.
Lucien Valez was in the room.
She had identified him within two minutes of coming to the railing — he moved through a crowd with a distinct characteristic, the ease of someone who understood rooms and knew how to be visible without being obvious. He was with three of his guests, a cluster in the south section of the atrium, champagne in hand, the social persona fully deployed. He was, to all appearances, exactly what he had presented himself as: a significant figure in the arts community attending a significant opening.
Adrien was at the railing beside her.
She had come up here alone and he had appeared beside her within two minutes, the way he appeared in spaces she occupied when there was something to watch. She had not asked him to come and had not been surprised that he was here.
She was watching the room. He was watching one person in the room.
"I want to speak to him," Adrien said.
She did not look away from the atrium. "I know."
"We have the recording. We have Rémy's testimony. We have the evidence in the glass. We have everything."
"We have everything," she confirmed.
"Then—"
"Then in two hours the sequence will run and the building will present it and two hundred people will witness it and three journalists with independent credibility will document it." She kept her voice level — not the professional level of someone managing a situation, the genuine level of someone who understood the situation clearly and was describing it accurately. "If you speak to him now, he adjusts. He has enough professional standing to create a counter-narrative tonight, in this room, before anything has been shown. He will use the same skills he has always used — controlled information, controlled impression — and he will make the evening about a dispute between two parties rather than about what Selene built."
Silence. She heard him processing this — not the logic of it, which he already understood, but the thing underneath the logic, the thing that had been asking to be done for ten years and was finding the constraint of two more hours almost insupportable.
"She waited ten years," he said. The words arrived with a weight that was not argumentative but factual — a statement of the cost that had been paid, offered as a measure of what two more hours represented.
"I know," she said. And then, because it was true and because it needed to be said to someone who was carrying ten years of it: "That cost is real and it's his. It belongs to him, not to you. What you do in the next two hours doesn't add to it or subtract from it. It only changes what happens in this building tonight."
He was quiet.
Below, Lucien moved through the atrium with the ease that had always been his instrument, and the guests moved around him in the way guests moved around people who had been in rooms like this for a long time and had learned to make rooms feel like their natural environment.
"Two hours," Adrien said. Not a question. Not an agreement. The statement of someone who has made a decision and is naming its terms.
"Two hours," she said.
She put her hand on his arm. Not lightly — firmly, with the specific quality of someone who is not offering comfort but is offering presence, the physical fact of another person beside you when you are holding something that asks to be let go. She was aware of her own hand on his arm, of the wool of his coat under her fingers, of the specific tension of muscle and restraint.
He looked down at her hand.
Then he looked at her.
The look lasted long enough to contain more than the moment — it contained the elevator in amber light and the ballroom threshold and the rooftop stone bench and the glass bridge and the sequence in the dark atrium and all of it arrived in the look without needing to be listed. She held his gaze without managing her own.
"Two hours," he said again, differently. Like a choice completed.
She released his arm. They both turned back to the atrium below.
Lucien was laughing at something one of his guests had said. The laugh was calibrated — she could see it from here, the precision of it, the performance of ease. She thought about Selene in the corridor outside the ballroom, standing in front of that same performance and speaking the truth into its face.
*Whatever you do to stop me, the building will say it.*
Below them, the pool was still. The guests moved around it. In the basement, the analogue system was waiting for G. In the ballroom, Delphine was at the piano.
"He looked up," Adrien said, quietly.
She turned. Lucien, in the south section of the atrium, had looked up at the railing — briefly, with the specific attention of someone scanning a room for information. His gaze moved across the level above him, across the section of railing where they were standing, and continued without pause.
He had not seen them. Or he had seen them and had decided not to react, which was the same as not seeing them for operational purposes.
"Let him look," she said. "There's nothing to see yet."
Adrien said nothing.
The atrium continued to fill below them, the building doing the ordinary work of receiving people, and above it two people stood at a railing and held two more hours in the specific way you hold something that is almost over.
