The social hour was in its second half when Lucien found her.
She had come down to the ground floor to run her final pre-sequence check — a walk-through of the atrium at crowd level, confirming that the guest distribution was not clustering in the reflection zones in ways that would interfere with the sequence's first phase. This was a standard installation concern, the kind of practical consideration that existed alongside every other concern and required attention regardless of context. She had her notebook and her phone and she was moving efficiently through the crowd with the focus of someone doing a specific task.
He came from her left, not from the direction she had last seen him, which told her he had been tracking her movement through the room.
"Miss Voss." His voice was exactly what it always was — measured, pleasant, carrying no more warmth than was required for the specific social register of an arts opening. He matched his pace to hers for a moment, walking alongside her in the way of someone who has positioned this as a casual encounter rather than an approach. "Extraordinary space. The restoration is exceptional."
"Thank you," she said, without stopping. She completed the notation she was making in her notebook and moved on to the next reflection zone.
"I wonder if you have a moment," he said. Still casual. Still the register of an opening-night conversation.
She stopped. She turned and looked at him — directly, with the attention she brought to things she needed to read accurately. Up close, the performance was even more refined than it had appeared from the railing. Every element of his presentation was intentional, the result of long practice: the suit, the expression, the specific calibration of his posture that communicated authority without aggression. He had spent decades building this instrument, and it was excellent.
It did not work on her the way it might have worked three weeks ago, before she had spent three weeks learning what was underneath it.
"A moment," she said.
They moved to the edge of the atrium, near the east wall — not far from the reflection point where Selene's name was incised in the glass, though Elara did not look at that section of the wall and did not indicate by any means that she knew it was there.
"I want to speak plainly," Lucien said. The social warmth had stepped back a degree — replaced by the register she had heard in the recording, the horizontal address, the language of two people who understand each other's position. "I think we've been circling something for several weeks and there's no longer sufficient time for circling."
"I agree," she said.
"I know your history," he said. "Not just the public version — I know the technical record. I know what happened at Aster Hall was not the result of your design decisions." A pause. "I also know that the official record says otherwise, and that the official record has been following you for three years."
She said nothing. She listened.
"I have significant influence in the institutions that maintain that record," he said. "The investigation report, the industry documentation, the publications that covered the incident. I have relationships with the people who produced those materials." Another pause — this one calibrated, the pause of someone offering something and waiting for the offer to be received. "I can ensure that the record is corrected. Completely and publicly. A full rehabilitation — not a quiet revision, but a clear, attributed correction that would restore your standing in every market where the incident has affected you."
The atrium moved around them. Champagne glasses caught the social lighting. The pool was still and patient at the room's center.
"In exchange," she said.
"In exchange," he confirmed. He was good enough to acknowledge the transaction without pretending it wasn't one. "After tonight, you would conclude your involvement with this project. A statement noting creative differences with the project's direction — professional, standard, nothing that reflects poorly on anyone. And you would, going forward, decline involvement in any project that references or concerns The Moonwell, its history, or the Solace family."
She looked at him.
She thought about three years. The studio on Rue Calvert, the small projects, the careful perimeter she had built around a wound that she now understood had been inflicted rather than self-created. She thought about what his offer would have meant to the person she had been before Valmere — the relief of it, the specific quality of being given back something that had been taken.
She thought about Selene's voice in the recording: *Whatever you do to stop me, the building will say it.*
"I have a question," she said.
He waited.
"Why do you think I want that?"
He looked at her. For the first time since the conversation began, something in the performance adjusted — not breaking, but recalibrating, the expression of someone who has encountered a response outside the expected range.
"Aster Hall has been your defining professional event for three years," he said. "The rehabilitation I'm describing would—"
"Would give me back a version of my career shaped by your intervention," she said. "In both directions — first the damage, then the repair. Both of those things belong to you. I would still be living in a story you wrote." She held his gaze. "I don't want your version of my career. I want the truth of what happened to be known. Those are different things."
His expression held.
"You have three years of professional damage," he said. It was not a threat — it was a statement of fact, the kind of fact deployed to remind someone of their position.
"Yes," she said. "And it led me here. To this building, to this work, to everything Selene left to be found." She looked at him steadily. "I would not trade it. Not because the three years were not costly — they were. But because what I found on the other side of them is not something I would give up for a clean record."
She turned to leave.
"Miss Voss."
She stopped. She did not turn back.
"Whatever you believe you've found in this building," he said, and his voice had changed — the smooth professional tone gone, replaced by something underneath it that she recognized from the recording, the cold quality that appeared when the performance was no longer serving its purpose, "it will not survive the evening intact. The arts community in this room understands how these things work. They understand that installations malfunction. They understand that artists in unstable professional situations sometimes produce work that is—" a pause "—difficult to assess."
She stood with her back to him for a moment.
She thought about Selene standing in the corridor with the cliff-face door behind her, saying *whatever you do to stop me, the building will say it.* She thought about the name in the glass, waiting. She thought about the sequence, built and rebuilt, carrying every piece of evidence Selene had assembled into a form that two hundred people in this room would see with their own eyes.
She turned back and looked at him one more time.
"The building," she said, "is going to say it."
She walked back to the control station.
Behind her, she heard nothing — no response, no movement. She did not need to hear anything. She took her phone from her pocket and sent the message to Adrien: *He made the offer. I declined. He will use plan B.* And then the second message: *We're ready.*
The reply came back in under a minute, as she was settling into the control station chair and opening the sequence interface. Four words:
*Theo is in basement.*
And then, a second later, three more:
*We are ready.*
