The meeting room on the top floor had no name, which Elara noted as she stepped out of the lift and found herself in a corridor that ended in a pair of glass doors through which an extraordinary amount of sky was visible.
Most meeting rooms had names. Conference Room A. The Boardroom. The Harlow Suite, in the case of one particularly self-congratulatory client she had once worked for. Names were a way of making bureaucracy feel located, of suggesting that important things happened here specifically rather than in the general ambient of professional life. The absence of a name suggested either that whoever used this room had no interest in that kind of symbolic geography, or that only one kind of meeting ever happened here and the context was therefore self-evident.
She pushed open the glass doors.
The room was almost entirely glazed on three sides, looking out over the cliff and the bay below. At this height the view was unobstructed — the whole arc of Valmere's harbor visible to the left, the open sea to the right, and directly ahead the morning light on the water, which was doing something Elara wanted to spend an hour looking at. The table in the center was long and pale, some kind of reconstituted stone, and a single set of documents was laid out at the far end with the precision of someone who had put them there and not touched them since.
Adrien was already at the table, standing, reading something on his phone. He did not look up when she came in. He finished reading — she had the impression he genuinely finished it, did not pretend to finish it — and then he put his phone in his pocket and pulled out the chair at the head of the table without offering her a choice about where to sit.
She chose the chair opposite him across the corner. Close enough to be professional, far enough to be her own decision.
He pushed the documents toward her.
She read them the way she had read the contract: front to back, without rushing, turning each page with attention. The room was very quiet except for the faint sound of wind against the glass. She was aware of him watching her read. She chose not to find this unsettling.
The contract supplement laid out the operational terms with the same precision as the original document, but with an additional section she had noticed referenced in the appendices and not yet seen in full. Section 7: *Creative Review and Approval Process.*
She read it twice.
Under the terms of Section 7, all design documentation produced during the project would be subject to review by Adrien Solace prior to any implementation phase. Installation elements presenting any content derived from or referencing the historical operation of The Moonwell would require specific written approval. All communications with third parties regarding the project — including but not limited to press, media, and other artists — would require pre-approval through Solace Holdings.
She set the page down. "This reads less like a creative brief and more like a non-disclosure agreement."
"It's both," he said.
She looked at him across the table. The morning light from the windows was behind him, which meant she was working against a slight backlight situation, which meant reading his expression required slightly more attention than it would have otherwise. She suspected this was not accidental.
"I don't work with veto rights on creative decisions," she said. "If I'm designing Moon Sequence, I'm designing it. That means I determine the visual language, the spatial relationships, the emotional narrative of the installation. You determine the brief. I execute the brief. That's the structure."
"The structure I'm offering," he said, without particular emphasis, "includes review at key stages."
"Review is different from veto."
A pause. He was looking at her with the same assessing quality she had noticed yesterday, the quality of someone who was recalculating something. "What's the distinction, for you?"
"Review means you can flag concerns and I consider them. I have the final word on design decisions. Veto means you can kill something I've built. I don't agree to that."
Another pause, longer. She watched him work through whatever he was working through, keeping her expression neutral and her hands still on the table.
"Flag rights," he said. "Not veto."
"Flag rights," she confirmed.
"In exchange, anything that references the building's previous operational history — events, persons, materials from that period — requires my written sign-off before you use it in the installation."
She considered this. It was a significant concession wrapped in a significant restriction. It told her that his concern was not about her design generally but about one specific area of it — the history. The period before the building closed. The period that included whatever had happened to Selene.
"Define 'references,'" she said.
"If you use archival material — photographs, documents, recordings — from The Moonwell's operational period, I approve those materials first."
"And if I arrive at something that connects to that period organically, through the work?"
"Then we discuss it."
It was not a clean answer, but it was an honest one, and she had learned to value honest ambiguity over false clarity. She picked up the pen. "I'll need to add a clause stating that flag rights don't constitute delay rights — I can't have a review process that stalls the timeline."
"Forty-eight hours maximum for written responses."
"Twenty-four."
He looked at her for a moment. Then: "Twenty-four."
She initialed the section and moved on.
They worked through the remaining documentation methodically. She had questions about the technical infrastructure — power supply, existing rigging points, structural load limits for the ceiling of the atrium. He answered them without consulting anyone, which meant either that he had memorized this information or that he had prepared for precisely these questions, and she found herself unable to determine which. Both possibilities told her something about him that she filed away.
At a certain point in the process, with four pages still to go, she set the pen down and looked up. "I want to return to something from yesterday."
His expression did not change. "Which thing."
"Room 1206. You said it was under renovation. There's no active work taking place in this building. I can hear the silence."
He held her gaze without any of the small behavioral signals that typically accompanied a lie — no micro-movement in the jaw, no slight redirection of the eyes, no adjustment in posture. He was either a very controlled liar or telling her something that was, in some sense he had defined for himself, technically true.
"Aspects of the room are being addressed," he said. "It's not available for installation use."
"I don't need it for installation. I need to see it for the survey."
"The survey has parameters. Room 1206 is outside them."
She looked at him for a long moment. He looked back. Neither of them moved.
"All right," she said.
She picked up the pen and finished the documents.
When everything was signed and counter-signed and organized into the folder he had brought, he produced the access package: a white card, no markings, and a small fob for the service entrance. She watched him set both items on the table between them rather than handing them to her directly. She had noticed this yesterday as well. She reached across and took them.
As she stood to leave, she did the thing she had been planning since she'd sat down, the thing she had put in the folder of considerations and decided to deploy at this exact moment, when the meeting was formally over and the contract was signed and she had nothing left to lose by asking it.
"Why me?"
He had been gathering the documents into a stack. He continued doing this. "Your portfolio is exceptional."
"There are other exceptional portfolios. You must have had a list." She kept her voice completely neutral. "You contacted me specifically. No intermediary, no agency. A blank email to my studio address."
"Your studio address is publicly available."
"So are a lot of other studio addresses." She waited. "The Aldric Gallery show in 2019. You mentioned it yesterday. That was three years before I disappeared. Two years before Aster Hall. Why was that the specific work you cited?"
The pause this time was different. She felt it differently — not the pause of someone calculating an answer, but the pause of someone deciding how much of the truth to give.
"It was the last project you completed at full scale," he said. "Before the accident. The lighting schema for the Aldric show was—" a fractional pause "—remarkable. Technically and conceptually. I wanted that level of work."
Elara looked at him across the table.
The answer was technically correct. The Aldric show had been remarkable; she knew this not from pride but from the objective record of what had been produced. It was also a perfectly constructed deflection from the actual question, which was not *what did you admire* but *why me specifically, why now, why this project.*
She thought: *he's been watching my work for at least three years.*
She thought: *he knew about Aster Hall before I walked through that door yesterday.*
She thought: *the real answer to my question is in room 1206.*
She picked up her bag. "I'll have preliminary concepts to you by the end of the week."
"I'll review them within twenty-four hours," he said, which was the correct answer per the contract they had just signed, and which she heard, for reasons she chose not to examine yet, as something else entirely.
She took the lift down alone. The building rose around her in the glass cage of it — floor after floor of the atrium visible through the lift's transparent walls, the reflecting pool far below her getting smaller as she descended, and then the floors reversing as the lift slowed and stopped.
Before the doors opened, she looked up through the glass ceiling of the lift car. Twelve floors above her, the meeting room glowed with morning light. She could not see him from here, and yet she had the very specific sensation of being inside something that was aware of her presence, something that had been waiting a long time to have someone in it who might actually look back.
The doors opened. She walked out into the lobby.
She passed the floor twelve indicator on the atrium wall as she headed for the exit. There were no sounds from up there. No renovation. Just the very deep quiet of a space that has been sealed against something, and has been doing this for ten years, and has not yet been asked to stop.
