She began her survey at seven in the morning, before the city was properly awake, when the light was still deciding what it wanted to be.
This was deliberate. The quality of early light was different from every other light in the day — less assertive, more provisional, the kind of light that shows you what a space could be rather than what it currently is. In her experience, the most important design decisions were made in that first hour, before the clinical certainties of full daylight settled in and made everything seem more fixed than it actually was. Before dawn was guesswork and projection. After noon was accounting. Between those two things was the hour in which she did her real work.
She let herself in through the service entrance with the key fob Adrien had given her and stood for a moment in the back corridor, listening.
The building sounded different from inside than it had yesterday, with him. Yesterday it had felt observed — not by her but by him, her experience of the building mediated through the fact of his presence in it. Today the building was hers to read directly. She moved through the service corridor and out into the atrium lobby and stopped just inside the main space and listened to the quality of the silence, which was not empty.
She could hear the sea, faintly, through the glass. And something else, very low — not quite a sound, more a frequency, the building itself doing something with the air pressure or the acoustic properties of the glass that produced a sensation rather than a noise, something she felt in the base of her sternum before she was aware of hearing it.
Adrien had left a building plan on the worktable he had set up for her in the lobby, along with a note in handwriting that was as precise as his signature: *Floor plans 1-17. Structural load data attached. Equipment deliveries scheduled for Thursday.* No greeting. No sign-off. Just the information, clean and complete.
She unrolled the plans and held them against the light and began.
The reflecting pool occupied the exact center of the atrium floor, as she had noted yesterday — a hexagonal basin perhaps six meters across, filled with still water. The basin was framed in the same reconstituted pale stone as the meeting room table above, flush with the atrium floor, with a lip no more than five centimeters high. Looking at it from the edge was slightly vertiginous, the sense of peering over something into depth, though the water could not have been more than thirty centimeters deep.
She set her measuring equipment on the floor and lay the color temperature sensor at the edge of the pool and began working through the morning's light systematically, mapping each source, each angle, each reflection coefficient. This was painstaking work and she found it soothing — the narrowness of the focus, the precision of the measurements, the way it crowded out everything that wasn't immediately relevant. She had always worked this way, even before Aster Hall. After, it had become something more: a way of existing in a defined perimeter, where the variables were controllable, where she could be competent without being exposed.
She was half an hour into this when she became aware that the light was wrong.
Not wrong in the way the Kellner project light had been wrong, which was a question of design. Wrong in the way that something is wrong when it contradicts what you know should be possible. She checked her measurements. She checked them again. She walked the perimeter of the pool, taking readings at each interval, and the readings confirmed what she was seeing: the light bouncing off the water and onto the atrium ceiling was not traveling at the angle physics required. It was bending. Not dramatically — not in the way of an obvious optical trick or a structural anomaly you could point to. Just slightly, perhaps three degrees off the vector, enough that a careful observer would register something was not quite right without being able to say exactly what.
She sat down on the pool's edge and looked at it.
The pool returned her gaze with its characteristic absolute stillness. The surface was perfectly flat — she had already confirmed this, no air circulation, no vibration source. And yet the light moved on it in a way that suggested something underneath the surface, some property of the basin material or the water itself, that she had not yet accounted for.
She was still sitting there, running calculations in her head, when someone sat down beside her.
"You feel it too, right?"
She turned. A man about her age, perhaps slightly older, with untidy fair hair and an expression of genuine enquiry behind wire-framed glasses, wearing a green canvas jacket over a grey t-shirt and carrying a coffee cup from the harbor café she had noticed that morning. He had a set of headphones around his neck, the large professional kind, and he was looking at the pool with the same expression she suspected she had been wearing, which was the expression of someone trying to solve something that doesn't want to be solved.
"Theo Marant," he said, without looking at her. "Sound engineer. You're the light artist."
"Elara Voss."
"I know." He sipped his coffee. "Adrien mentioned you."
She looked at the pool. "What did he mention?"
"That you'd be starting this week. That you were very particular about your survey methodology." A pause. "I may be paraphrasing."
She wasn't sure if this was humor. "How long have you been here?"
"This morning? About twenty minutes. In general?" He tilted his head slightly. "Complicated answer to that question."
She let it sit there for a moment. "You worked here before."
It wasn't a question. She had read the staff documentation Adrien had included in the access package, and Theo Marant's name had appeared in the technical crew list from the pre-closure period with the annotation *sound installation, 2013-2014.*
"For a while," he said. "I left when it closed. Everyone did." He looked at the pool. "Same reason you came back, probably. Unfinished business."
She looked at him sidelong. He was watching the pool with the expression of someone who has asked himself a question many times and has not yet received a satisfying answer. His hands were wrapped around the coffee cup and his shoulders were slightly hunched, the posture of someone who has been carrying something for a long time and has learned to hold the weight without showing it.
"What's unfinished?" she said.
He smiled, and it was a real smile but a careful one, deployed with precision. "That's a long conversation for before eight in the morning." He looked at her. "What were you calculating?"
She considered. "The light in this pool is doing something it shouldn't. The reflection vectors are approximately three degrees off the expected angle. I can't account for it structurally."
He nodded slowly, as though this confirmed something. "The acoustic profile does the same thing. The bass frequencies bounce at angles that shouldn't be physically possible given the room geometry. I've measured it four times. Same result every time." A pause. "I don't have an explanation either."
They sat in silence for a moment, both looking at the pool. The light continued doing its impossible thing.
"The building paying attention," he said, which was what he'd said when he sat down, and which she had heard the first time and which meant more to her now.
"You think the building is doing it deliberately." She heard how that sounded and continued without adjusting it. "Or whatever the non-supernatural version of deliberately is."
"I think something about this space was built to do something very specific," he said, "and whatever that was, it was never completed. And the building—" he considered "—I don't know. Keeps trying."
She looked at the water for a long time. Then she took out her sketchbook and drew a rough plan view of the atrium, marking the pool at the center, the reflection vectors as she had measured them, and the point on the ceiling where they converged — not at the structural apex, as they should, but at a point approximately one meter to the east of it, which corresponded, she realized now, to the floor of the ballroom on level four.
She stared at what she had drawn.
She looked up and found Theo watching her with an expression that said he had made the same connection some time ago and had been waiting for her to make it too.
"What's in the ballroom?" she said.
"A piano," he said. "And an echo that starts at a specific frequency and doesn't stop."
She closed her sketchbook.
At the end of the morning session, after Theo had left and she had spent another two hours alone with her measurements, she made the decision about the pool. She had been briefing herself toward it all morning, half-consciously, the way good design decisions accumulate before they announce themselves. Moon Sequence would be built around the reflecting pool. Not around the architecture of the atrium, not around the spectacular views from the upper floors, not around any of the elements that the brief had gestured toward. Around this: this particular pool, with its anomalous light, at the center of a building that had been waiting for something for ten years.
She wrote it in the sketchbook: *The pool knows something. Build around it.*
It felt true in the way that design decisions feel true when they are made at the right moment, with the right information, by someone who has been paying the right kind of attention.
It also felt, she acknowledged, like putting herself directly in the middle of whatever this building was doing. She had known this was what she was going to do from the moment she sat down by the pool's edge. She was going to put herself at the center of it, and she was going to pay attention to what the building was trying to say, and she was not going to look away when it said it.
She packed up her equipment at noon and walked toward the lobby exit. Adrien was standing in the doorway — she didn't know how long he had been there, whether he had come in while she was working or had been present for some portion of the morning. He was not looking at her. He was looking at the pool, the way he always seemed to look at things in this building: from a distance, with great care, as though looking too closely might change something he needed to stay the same.
She kept walking toward the exit. She had reached the door before she turned and looked back across the atrium.
He was still looking at the pool.
She looked at the pool too, from the threshold, and for a moment they were both attending to the same thing from different distances, the light doing its impossible work between them, and she had the specific feeling of being observed by something much larger than either of them — not the building, not Adrien, but whatever it was that had been waiting here, patient as stone, for someone to come back and look.
