Rémy had been at The Moonwell for thirty-one years.
This was the number he gave her when she asked, in the way of someone who has been asked this question before and answers it the same way each time, not with pride exactly but with the particular steadiness of someone who has organized their identity around a single sustained fact. He had come to the hotel as a young maintenance technician in the building's third year of operation, worked his way to head of facilities within a decade, and then — when the hotel closed — had remained. Not precisely as an employee, not precisely as anything the organizational chart could account for, but present. In the building, or close to it, maintaining things that had nothing left to maintain in ways that probably served no practical function and served him enormously.
He was a small man in his sixties with careful hands and the economy of movement that comes from decades of working in confined mechanical spaces. He wore a grey jumpsuit that had the faded look of something very old and very regularly laundered, and he carried a set of master keys that he had clearly had for so long they were an extension of his hand. Adrien had mentioned him in the access documentation — *Rémy Aubert, facilities, available on request* — with the same spare notation used for the coffee machine and the load calculations.
Elara had been working in the corridor outside room 1007 for an hour that morning, mapping the light behavior at the junction of the tenth floor's east and north walls, when Rémy came through the service door at the corridor's end pushing a trolley with nothing on it. He moved past her without stopping, giving her the professional nod of one technician acknowledging another in a workspace, and then he stopped.
She had not done anything. She had been crouching in front of her sensor array, making adjustments, and she had not moved or spoken. But he stopped.
She looked up and found him looking at her — not at her face exactly, but at her position on the floor, the specific angle of her crouch, the way her measuring equipment was arranged on the corridor floor in front of her. Looking at all of this with an expression that she could not immediately read.
"She used to stand exactly there," he said.
He said it quietly, and more to the corridor than to her, in the way people say things they have been not-saying for a long time and find, unexpectedly, that they've said.
Elara kept very still. "Who?"
He looked at her properly then — at her face — and the expression changed from whatever it had been to something that was managing itself back to careful. "Testing the angles," he said. "She was always checking the angles."
"Who?" she said again, softly.
A pause. "Selene," he said. And then, as though the word had surprised him by coming out: "I shouldn't have said that." He took hold of his trolley. "I'm sorry. I should get on."
"Rémy," she said.
He didn't stop walking.
She let him go. She sat with the name for a moment — the way it had sounded in the corridor, in his voice, with that particular quality that the names of the dead and disappeared acquire when people have been not-saying them for a long time. A word that had been held for ten years and had let itself out without permission and was now audible, irrevocable, in the air of the building where the person it belonged to had last been seen.
Selene.
She opened her laptop where it was propped on her equipment case and searched: *Selene Moonwell Valmere.*
The search returned eight results. Eight, for a search that should — given the magnitude of what had apparently happened here — have returned hundreds. She went through them methodically.
Three were from the same travel aggregator site, republishing the same short description of The Moonwell's pre-closure programming, which mentioned in passing that the hotel had featured "live classical performance" and gave no names. Two were from arts listings sites, entries for events that had been partially scrubbed — she could see the gaps in the text where content had been removed, the same precise surgical removal she had seen in the news article. One was a photograph caption from a gallery website, describing an exhibition she had attended in 2019 without knowing it, at the Aldric Gallery — the photograph showed a woman at a piano in an installation space, turned partially away from the camera, the caption giving only *performer, The Moonwell residency program.* No name.
One was a forum post on a classical music discussion board from seven years ago, asking if anyone knew what had happened to *Selene Solace, pianist, who performed at the Moonwell hotel in Valmere before it closed.* There were two responses. The first said they had heard she went to live in another country. The second said they had heard she hadn't.
Eight results. A person who had existed in this building, who had made burn marks on the wall of suite 1701, whose name an old man had carried in his mouth for ten years before accidentally releasing it in an empty corridor — and the sum total of her digital presence was eight managed, depleted results and a forum thread that concluded nowhere.
Elara stared at the screen.
She thought about the contract clause: *all materials referencing the historical operation of The Moonwell require written approval.* She thought about the way Adrien had said *the room was empty for ten years* with his voice performing something his face was not feeling. She thought about Solace Holdings, and the surname, and the word *Solace,* and the name Selene Solace, and she sat very still in the corridor of the tenth floor and understood what she was standing in the middle of.
She found Rémy in the basement service area near the water systems, doing something with a pressure gauge that may or may not have needed doing.
"I know about Selene Solace," she said, from the doorway.
He didn't turn around. His hands stayed on the gauge.
"I know she performed here. I know she's Adrien's sister. I know she was doing installation work in suite 1701." She kept her voice very level. "I know she disappeared."
A long silence. The water systems hummed around them.
"I signed something," Rémy said finally, to the gauge. "A long time ago. I can't." He shook his head, a small tight motion. "I can't talk about it. I'm sorry."
He closed the panel of the water system. He picked up his tools. He moved past her and through the door and she let him go, because she was beginning to understand that pressing people directly in this building produced sealed doors, and that sealed doors were not the only way in.
She found Adrien in his office on the third floor, finishing a phone call. The office was spare and organized, a desk with two monitors and a set of shelves with binders on them that were labeled in the same spare notation as his notes to her. Through the window behind him, the bay was bright in the afternoon light.
He ended the call when she came in, set the phone down with the careful placement he gave all objects.
"Selene was an artist who performed here," she said, before he could speak. "She worked in suite 1701. Her last name was Solace." She watched his face. "You have the same last name."
Nothing moved in his face for a moment — a moment long enough that she could observe the absence of movement and understand it for what it was: control in active operation. Then: "Selene was an artist who performed here. She left. That's all."
The flatness of his voice was too consistent to be natural. She had heard people describe losses before — her mother's particular vocal register when she spoke about Elara's grandmother, the way Mira went quiet when the conversation reached certain subjects. There was a quality that grief gave to voice, not always audible in the content of what was said but present in the texture of how it was delivered, and she could hear it clearly now in the spaces of Adrien's control, in the very flatness that he was working to maintain.
"People don't leave without taking their things," she said quietly.
He looked at her. His eyes were very still, which was different from being still — eyes that had been made still, by force of will, that wanted to do something else.
"The room was preserved," she said. "I don't know which room yet, but there's a room in this building that was preserved exactly as it was left. Things don't stay like that unless someone decides they should."
She did not say: *I know it's 1206.* She did not say: *I know you are in this building every day and you are not here for a renovation project.* She did not say these things because she understood, with increasing clarity, that the information she was accumulating was more useful than the confrontation she was not having.
"Selene left," he said. "The family has accepted that."
She looked at him for a long time — at the way he was holding himself in that chair, at the quality of his stillness, at the single thing she kept returning to: the fact that he had given her suite 1701, with the burn marks, with the mirror on sliding brackets, and had said *the light is better without it.* A man who had truly accepted that someone was gone did not leave evidence of their work under a mirror that could be moved.
"All right," she said.
She walked out of the office and down the corridor to the lift and stood inside the glass cage as it descended and watched the floors go by and thought about all the different kinds of not-telling — the kind Rémy did, out of fear, out of something signed; the kind Adrien did, which was more complicated, which she was still reading. And she thought about the fact that you could not be as controlled as he was without the control costing you something. That the flatness in his voice when he said *she left* was the sound of something being held very hard in a space that was not quite big enough for it.
The lift reached the ground floor.
Elara stepped out into the atrium and stood for a moment in front of the reflecting pool. The afternoon light was doing what it always did — that slight, impossible bend in the vectors, light going somewhere it shouldn't be able to go.
She thought: *the truth is in this building. He knows it and he can't say it and he gave me the room because he needed someone to look.*
And then, because she was honest in her own head even when she wished she weren't: *he's in pain. That's not abstract to me anymore. That matters to me, and I've known him four days.*
She sat down on the edge of the pool and got out her phone to call Mira, because Mira would know what to do with this, or at least would know what to say, which was sometimes the same thing and sometimes better.
Mira answered on the second ring with: "Tell me you haven't done anything I need to worry about."
"Selene Solace," Elara said. "She's Adrien's sister. She disappeared in this building ten years ago. I found out twenty minutes ago."
A pause on Mira's end. The sound of her typing. Then: "Elara. Selene Solace. She was a pianist. She was — wait." More typing. "Oh."
"What."
"She was everywhere," Mira said. "I'm looking at archive photos, concert programs from before 2014. She was everywhere, and then — completely gone. I mean completely. There are gaps where she should be. Someone has—" She stopped. "Someone has been very thorough."
"I know," Elara said.
She was looking at the pool. In the surface of the water, her reflection looked back at her — and behind her, where the atrium stretched away, something moved in the periphery of the reflection, a shape she registered and then dismissed as a trick of the building's light, because when she turned there was nothing there.
But the pool had seen it.
