She could not sleep.
This was not unusual — she had not slept well in three years, a fact so established that she had built her working schedule around it, treating the hours between midnight and four as a kind of secondary workday, using them for the kind of thinking that required no interruption. But tonight the wakefulness had a different quality. It was not the restless, self-directed insomnia of her studio on Rue Calvert, where she lay awake measuring the distance between what she was and what she had been and found it wider than was comfortable. Tonight she was awake and pointed outward — attuned to the building around her rather than to herself.
She lay on the studio couch in suite 1701 and listened.
The bay outside the east windows was dark and calm. The city lights made a low aureole above the harbor, reflected imprecisely on the water — the same light she had been thinking about all week, the light of this city that loved its own reflection and arranged its architecture accordingly. She had sketched it from the window three times today and still felt she hadn't got it right, felt there was something about the specific quality of Valmere's light at night that she was not yet able to say.
She had been thinking about Selene.
Not about the disappearance — she had processed the immediate shock of that information during the afternoon, working through it the way she worked through technical problems, methodically and without allowing it to become something she couldn't manage. She had been thinking about Selene the artist. About the burn marks on the north wall of suite 1701, each one the record of a deliberate choice — this angle, this intensity, this color temperature. About the specific sensibility implied by a 2400 Kelvin specification, warm as candlelight, attending to the margins of visibility. About the fact that someone in this building, ten years ago, had been asking the same questions she was asking about light and memory and what a space might be made to hold.
She had been thinking: *she was very good.*
Not from the burns alone — she couldn't fully construct a practice from burn marks on plaster. But from the building itself, from the way it responded to her absence. The impossible reflection vectors in the pool. The acoustic anomaly Theo had described. The feeling — which she had by now given up trying to rationalize as a feeling rather than a measurement — that the building was doing something it had been set up to do, something that had been designed into it and had never been completed, and was still trying.
Something Selene had set in motion and never had the chance to finish.
It was nearly midnight when she heard it.
Not loudly. Not dramatically. A sound at the very edge of audibility, something her brain had been registering for several minutes before she consciously heard it, the way the air in a room changes when someone enters even before you've turned to look. She sat up on the couch.
Piano.
A single phrase, eight or ten notes, climbing and then falling — not quite a melody but the shape of one, the suggestion of a melodic intention that kept arriving at the same point and then stopping. As though someone were trying to remember the next note and could not. As though the music were a word on the tip of a tongue.
She stood.
The sound was coming from below — she was certain of this, though the acoustic properties of the building made it difficult to be certain of direction. She pulled on her jacket and shoes and picked up her phone for light and went out into the corridor.
The seventeenth floor was empty and still. She went to the lift and descended to four.
Here the sound was clearer — still faint, still at the threshold of certainty, but directional now. East end of the floor, the same direction the pool's light vectors had pointed. She walked the corridor slowly, using her phone's low light rather than the overhead emergency strips, attending to the sound the way she attended to anomalous data: without prejudging it, without trying to make it fit a prior explanation.
The corridor ended at a set of double doors, taller than the standard hotel doors, faced in the same pale wood as the rest of the floor's trim. She knew from the floor plans that this was the ballroom — a space the building's original architects had designed as the social center of the hotel, a room for dancing and performance and the specific kinds of collective feeling that large circular spaces with high ceilings were meant to facilitate.
The doors were locked.
She pressed her palm to the wood and felt — not heard — the music coming through it. The phrase again, the same eight notes, the same stop at the same place.
She stood there for a long moment with her hand on the door.
"You heard it."
She turned. Adrien was at the far end of the corridor, standing in the shadow where the emergency lighting didn't quite reach. He was not wearing a coat — just a dark shirt, open at the collar, the first time she had seen him without a layer between himself and the air of the building. He looked like someone who had been awake for a long time, or like someone who had not expected to be seen.
She waited.
He walked toward her down the corridor, and she watched him do it — the way he moved in this building, the specific ease of it, the way the space received him as though it had been calibrated to his dimensions. He produced a card from his breast pocket and held it to the lock. The doors swung inward.
The ballroom was not what she had been imagining, which was a space in the process of returning to nature — dusty, draped, the melancholy of the abandoned. It was none of those things. It was clean. The circular floor was in excellent condition, the pale hardwood polished, the mirrors that lined the curved walls intact and clear. The ceiling was high and domed, fitted with a rigging system for lighting and sound that Theo would have opinions about. Through the tall windows at the north end, the sea was just barely visible in the darkness.
And at the center of the room, on a low platform that she had somehow known would be there, a grand piano. Black lacquer, lid open.
She crossed to it slowly, not looking away from it, the way you approach something you've been told to approach carefully without being told why. The music had stopped. She didn't know when it had stopped — somewhere between the doors opening and now, the phrase had ended and not restarted, as though whatever produced it had heard the doors and waited.
She reached the edge of the platform and stopped. Adrien was somewhere behind her — she could hear him at the room's entrance, had not heard him come further in.
She reached out and pressed a single key.
The note — a G, she thought, though she was not a pianist — rose into the room and stayed, the sustained quality of sound in a space with exceptional acoustics, hanging in the air longer than physics strictly required, as though the room were reluctant to let it go.
She listened to it decay.
Then she turned.
Adrien was standing just inside the doorway. He had not come further — was standing exactly at the threshold between the corridor and the room, and she understood, in the way she was beginning to understand things about him, that there was a reason for this. That crossing this threshold cost him something. That he had crossed it enough times to know exactly what it cost, and he was currently determining whether it was worth it.
She looked at him across the room, across the piano, across the distance between them that was full of sound and absence.
"This was hers," she said. It was not a question.
He did not answer. His face was very still and very quiet — the specific kind of quiet that exists in a person who is holding something that is too large to hold.
She looked at the piano for a moment. She thought about the phrase that had led her here: those eight notes, the climbing and falling, the stop at the same point. She thought about music that doesn't complete itself. About sound that gets to the edge of something and finds it can't go further.
She turned back and looked at him again, and she made the decision to give him the silence he needed rather than the question she wanted to ask, because she could see what the room was doing to him and she understood, more than she wanted to, how it felt to be in a space that contained a loss you hadn't finished with.
She stepped back from the piano. She walked back across the ballroom floor toward the doors, toward him, and he stepped to the side to let her pass, and as she went through the doorway and into the corridor she was close enough to him that she was aware of the warmth of him, the specific physical reality of him that was different from the composed and managed version he presented in daylight, and she did not stop.
He locked the doors behind them.
They walked back to the lift in silence.
At the lift doors, she said, without looking at him: "I'll find it eventually. Whatever happened here. I need to, for the work."
A pause. "I know," he said.
She pressed the button for seventeen. The lift came. She got in, and he did not.
The doors closed. She rose through the building and watched the floors pass and thought about the phrase she had heard — those eight notes — and the specific place they always stopped. She had heard it before, she realized. Not the phrase itself, but the intention of it, the quality of a piece of music that had been interrupted before it could complete its own logic.
When she was back in suite 1701, she opened her laptop and searched: *Selene Solace piano recording.*
One result. A video uploaded to a small classical music archive six years ago, unlisted, titled only with a date. She pressed play.
A concert stage, from the audience's perspective, poorly lit, clearly filmed on a phone. A woman at a grand piano, her back partly turned. The opening of a piece Elara did not recognize — something contemporary, something personal in the way music can be personal when it has been composed rather than performed, when it is the composer's hand and not an interpreter's.
The piece developed, building in the way slow burn music builds, accumulating harmonic weight. And then, six minutes in, the phrase. Those eight notes, in exactly the configuration she had heard in the ballroom — climbing and then falling and then stopping at the same place.
But in the recording, the phrase continued. The next note came, and then another, and the phrase resolved and the music moved on and eventually came to an ending that satisfied in the way endings satisfy when they have been long in coming and have been earned.
The last notes of Selene Solace's recording faded into the archive's ambient silence.
Elara sat very still in the dark of suite 1701.
The ballroom had been playing a section of Selene's music. Not the whole thing. Just the part before the resolution. Just the part that couldn't finish.
She looked at the east windows. The bay outside was dark and still. Somewhere in this building, in a room she hadn't been allowed to enter, Selene Solace's things were waiting exactly as she had left them.
Elara thought about stopping points. About music and light and all the things that get interrupted before they can arrive at what they were building toward.
She closed her laptop and lay in the dark and thought about a man standing at the threshold of a ballroom, not able to cross it, and the distance between that and being able to cross it, and what it would take.
She did not sleep for a long time.
