She spent the early morning preparing.
Not for a confrontation — she had considered the possibility of confrontation and set it aside, because confrontations with Adrien Solace appeared to produce sealed doors and perfectly composed deflections, and she needed something more than that. She was preparing for an observation. She wanted to see him tell a lie when he knew she knew it was a lie, because that gap — between the lie and the knowledge of it — was where she thought the real information was.
She went to the lobby at eight and found him at the reflecting pool, where he was standing looking at the water with a cup of coffee in one hand and a set of building schematics in the other. He looked as he always looked in the morning: composed, precise, as though the previous night's corridor and the ballroom and the almost-conversation at the lift had happened to different people or not at all.
She stood beside him at the pool's edge and did not begin with softening.
"Selene Solace was your sister," she said. "She disappeared in this building during a light installation ten years ago. You hired me to build a light installation in the same space where it happened."
He looked at the pool. He did not look at her.
"I want to be precise about what I know," she continued, keeping her voice level, attending to the quality of her own delivery in the same way she attended to measurement data. "I know about the burn marks in suite 1701. I know the ballroom piano plays her music. I know you've been in this building continuously — not renovating, not developing, but present. I know Rémy signed something after she disappeared. And I know her digital presence has been deliberately reduced to the point of near-erasure, which takes money and intention and the specific kind of patience someone only has if they're protecting something rather than managing a grieving process."
She stopped. She was watching his face in her peripheral vision, not directly, in the way you watch something you need to see fully rather than in detail.
He was looking at the pool. His jaw was set. His coffee cup was still in his hand. Nothing in his posture had changed, which was to say his posture had arranged itself into its usual controlled configuration and was holding there by the same kind of effort that holding anything very still requires.
"Selene was an artist," he said. "She performed here. She chose to leave Valmere. The family has accepted that."
Every word was clean and placed. Not hurried, not defensive, each syllable carrying exactly the weight it had been assigned. She had heard good liars before — not many, but a few, the kind of person who had told a particular story so many times that the story had acquired its own momentum — and this was not quite that. This was something more deliberate. He was not repeating a story that had calcified into habit. He was constructing the story fresh in each moment, fitting it to the precise dimensions of what needed to be said, and the effort of construction was almost completely invisible.
Almost.
She looked at him directly now. He continued looking at the pool.
"The burn marks in suite 1701 are from a 2400 Kelvin source," she said. "That's a specific choice. An aesthetic position. Whoever made them was thinking about warmth as a quality, about light at the threshold of visibility — about the difference between being seen and being on the edge of being seen." She paused. "That's not a footnote. That's a whole approach to what light can do. And it's Selene's. I can tell from the archive video I found. The way she approached the keyboard, the register she worked in — it's the same sensibility. She wasn't just a performer. She was building something here."
A pause. Something passed across his face, or almost passed across it, or she thought she saw something pass across it and could not tell if she was reading the truth or projecting what she wanted to see.
"She was talented," he said.
The word landed with the particular weight of something being given rather than offered, a piece of something larger, controlled. Not chosen words. Chosen affect around the words.
She thought: *this is what grief sounds like when it's been managed into a certain shape over ten years.*
"Did you hire me because of my work," she said, "or because of Aster Hall?"
He turned and looked at her for the first time in this conversation. The direct look, the one that read rather than glanced, the assessing grey-blue of his attention landing on her in a way she felt in her chest before she registered it as thought.
The pause that followed was the longest of any pause in any conversation she had had with him. Not a hesitation — she had begun to know the difference between his hesitations, which were tactical, and his pauses, which were real. This was real. This was a person who had arrived at a decision point and was finding that the available paths were all imperfect in different ways.
"Your portfolio speaks for itself," he said.
Every word in its place. Clean. Technically true. An answer that was a door shut very quietly, with the mechanism exactly engaged.
She held his gaze for a moment.
She had known he was going to say something like this. She had prepared for it in the early morning in the way she prepared for a difficult measurement — by establishing in advance what she was looking for, so that she would recognize it when it appeared. She had been looking for the gap, the fraction of a second in which the answer existed before the answer was produced, the space of choice.
She had found it. It was in the length of that pause, and in the way his eyes had moved during it — not to the pool, not to the schematic, not to any of the places he usually sent his attention when he was constructing something to say. They had moved, briefly and privately, to the north wall of the atrium, where the corridor to the service stairs was, where floor twelve was eight floors up and room 1206 was at the end of the hall.
He had looked at her with the intention of telling the truth — she had seen it in the length of the pause — and then he had decided against it, and the reason was in the direction of his gaze.
She thought: *he's not protecting himself. He's protecting something in that room.*
"All right," she said.
She said it simply, without emphasis, in the tone of someone who has received an answer and intends to do something with it privately.
They stood at the pool for a moment, not speaking. The morning light was doing its impossible thing on the water between them, bending at the wrong angle, making the surface bright in places it had no right to be.
She thought about the way they looked in the pool's surface — two people standing close enough that a stranger might assume intention, with enough distance between them that they could still be maintaining the fiction of purely professional proximity. She thought about the fact that the pool was reflecting more than was actually there, that its particular property was to show her things that were slightly off from reality, to bend the visual evidence of the world by a fraction that was just enough to mean something.
She looked at the pool rather than at him.
"I'm going to find it," she said. "Whatever happened here, whatever Selene was building, whoever made sure it would never be finished — I'm going to find it. Not for the installation. For myself." A pause. "I thought you should know that."
He did not say: *please don't.* He did not say: *the contract prevents you.* He did not say anything at all, which was itself information, which she had also been expecting.
She picked up her equipment bag from the pool surround and walked toward the service corridor. At the entrance she paused — not to look back, but because something stopped her: the particular quality of the silence behind her, which was not the silence of someone who had dismissed her and returned to his schematics, but the silence of someone standing very still, holding something.
"Don't go to floor twelve alone," he said.
She turned. He was looking at her now, directly, and his face had the quality of the night before in the ballroom — not less controlled, but controlled at higher cost, the effort showing in the set of his mouth, the steadiness of his eyes.
"Then come with me," she said.
A pause. "Not yet," he said.
Not no. Not never. Not the contract, not the clause about historical materials, not any of the instrumental reasons he could have deployed. Not yet: two syllables that acknowledged something she had not said directly, that accepted the possibility of something without committing to its terms.
She left without answering, because she understood that was the correct thing to do, and because she needed to be in the lift alone with what she was feeling, which was not triumph and not satisfaction but something more complicated — the specific unease of understanding someone better than you want to, better than is safe, better than can be easily managed.
The lift came and she got in and the doors closed and she leaned against the glass wall and looked at her own reflection and thought about all the things she was finding in this building, and about the fact that some of them were not about Selene at all.
She stood in the lift for a moment after it reached seventeen, not moving, the doors open, the corridor of the top floor waiting.
She thought: *I'll go to floor twelve tomorrow.*
And then, without entirely meaning to, she thought: *I want to go with him.*
She stepped out of the lift. The doors closed behind her. In the glass panel of the lift shaft, her reflection watched her walk away down the corridor, and she did not look back at it.
