The walkthrough started at eight-thirty.
He had rearranged the room slightly — moved the spare chair so it sat in the middle of the space rather than at the corner of the desk, the position of someone being interviewed rather than someone working. He had put the contingency plan away. He had put everything away, because a Traffic operative doing a sweep would walk into a space that looked like a person lived in it, not like someone had been running operational analysis for three weeks.
The room looked like a person lived in it.
He stood in the doorway.
"I'm going to go out, come back in, and I'm from Traffic," he said. "Standard sweep protocol. Friendly but thorough."
Mien looked at him from the spare chair. She was holding herself with the particular stillness of someone who had been practicing stillness for twenty-three days — not rigid, not performed, just present.
"Ready," she said.
He went out. Stood in the hallway for thirty seconds. Then he opened the door the way a Traffic operative would open it — with the specific authority of someone who had been given a job to do and was doing it without apology — and came in.
"Good afternoon. Traffic Demon Suppression. Standard sweep coverage for this sector." He kept his voice at the professional, impersonal register. "Can I get your name?"
"Mien." No hesitation. The right amount of natural.
"You're the visiting family member?"
"Yes."
"How long have you been here?"
A brief pause — not the wrong kind. "About three weeks now."
"Where are you visiting from?"
The cover story. The district two hours out. The bus route, the street food, the outdoor markets. She gave him three sentences — the amount a real person would give to someone doing a sweep, not the full prepared answer.
He asked six more questions. She answered all of them.
On the third question — "do you plan to stay long?" — she answered with a fraction of a pause before speaking, 0.3 seconds, the same hesitation he had noted on the previous run.
He let the walkthrough finish before addressing it.
"Third question," he said, dropping the Traffic register. "The pause."
"I know." She looked at her hands. "It's not hesitation. I just don't know how to answer it honestly and within the cover."
He looked at her.
"Say what's true," he said. "'I haven't decided yet. It depends on how things go.' That's the honest answer. People who haven't decided yet don't pause because they're hiding something. They pause because they genuinely haven't decided."
She said it, in the Traffic scenario register: "I haven't decided yet. It depends on how things go."
No pause.
"Better," he said.
They ran it four more times. By the fourth run, the hesitation on the third question was gone. In its place was the specific quality of someone giving an honest answer to a question they genuinely hadn't resolved.
Because she hadn't.
---
The second walkthrough added variables.
He came in differently — faster, more direct. He asked questions that weren't in the prepared set: Had she noticed anything unusual in the building? Did she know the neighbors?
On the last question she mentioned Mrs. Nam by name, which was the right call.
Then he asked: "Have you ever lived alone?"
She stopped.
Not the 0.3-second hesitation of before. A longer stop.
Then: "I don't remember enough to answer that question."
He stayed in the Traffic register for a beat. Then: "What do you mean?"
"I had some health issues before I came here. My memory of the period before is incomplete." She said it evenly, without performance. "My cousin — the security guard here — he's been helping me work through it."
He stepped out of the Traffic register.
He looked at her.
She looked back.
"Honest gap," he said.
"Yes."
He turned it over. An operative hearing that would note it — but as a personal history detail rather than a cover story inconsistency. Medical amnesia was unusual but not impossible. It explained the incomplete answers without creating a false narrative that could be cross-referenced.
"It also explains the visit," he said. "Why you're here, why you're staying."
"Yes." She paused. "It's also true."
He opened the cover story document. Added a new section: Medical history — partial amnesia, pre-visit. Authentic gap rather than constructed detail.
He saved it as version four.
"That's better than anything I wrote," he said.
She looked at the document. "Can I see it?"
He turned the screen toward her. She read the new section.
"It's accurate," she said.
"Yes."
---
The afternoon settled.
Ambient at twenty-eight point nine. Four days until the sweep. The contingency plan was complete. Cover story version four was better than version three, built from more true things.
He was back at the desk. She was at the south-facing window, looking down at the courtyard.
He was working through the secondary analysis when she asked, without turning:
"What was this place like before you got here?"
He set the pen down.
The question was not tactical. He understood that in the first second. She had been looking at this courtyard for twenty-three days and was asking about the days before those twenty-three days — about the space she now occupied before she occupied it.
"Quieter," he said. "Fewer people. Some families moved out in the first year — places with better defensive infrastructure." He paused. "Mrs. Nam has been here longer than anyone. Since before the war. She used to tell me what the street looked like when there were vendors who stayed in one place instead of moving every day."
"What did it look like?"
"More color, she said. She had a specific memory of a flower vendor who worked the corner for twelve years. Same spot, same time every morning."
Mien was quiet for a moment. "What happened to him?"
"He moved north to be near his children in 2219." He paused. "Mrs. Nam said the corner looked wrong for a year after."
She was still looking at the courtyard.
"And the market?" she said.
"It moved twice in the first two years. The first location had structural damage — a B-rank incursion in 2220. The current location is less convenient but more defensible. The layout you see now has been stable for three years. Since I arrived."
"You mapped it when you got here."
"Yes."
"Everything."
"Yes."
She was quiet for a moment. Then: "The tree at the corner of Fifth and the market road. The dead one."
He looked at her.
"You mentioned it in passing three days ago," she said. "You said it died last winter."
"Yes. A flame tree. They're not suited to the winters we've been having since the atmospheric disruption. The root system couldn't compensate."
She turned from the window. Looked at him.
"You know a lot about this place," she said.
"I've been here three years."
"That's not why." She looked at him with the expression that had no name — except that it had been acquiring names, slowly, over the past three weeks. "You know it the way someone knows something they decided to learn."
He looked at the desk.
"I needed to know it," he said. "When I arrived."
"You needed to know it for operational reasons."
"Yes."
"But that's not why you still know it."
He looked at the window.
He could stop here. He knew all the ways to redirect a conversation going somewhere he hadn't planned. He was good at all of them.
He didn't use any of them.
"I came here because it was the right size," he said. "Small enough to manage. No strategic value, so no one would look too closely. Residents who don't have the profile that attracts complications." He paused. "That was the calculation."
She was looking at him.
He looked at the window.
"After a while I stopped doing the calculation," he said. "I still knew the flame tree and the name of the vendor's dog and the year Mrs. Nam's husband died and the way the market moved twice." He paused. "Not because I needed to. Because I'd been here long enough."
The room was quiet.
He had said more than he intended. He was aware of that. He was also aware that he had not said it accidentally — he had said it with the quality of something chosen, even if the choosing had been made in the moment.
"Not a plan," he said. "But not wrong."
Mien looked at him for a moment.
Then she looked back at the window — the courtyard, the corner where the flame tree was gone, the market two streets over.
"I understand," she said.
Two words. No elaboration.
He looked at the window alongside her.
She understood. He knew she understood. The specific thing she understood was not something either of them had named — it existed in the space between what had been said and what didn't need to be said. She was here in the same way he was here: not because she had planned to be, not because it was the calculated best option, but because she had been here long enough, and it had become the place she was.
They looked at the courtyard together for a while.
Neither of them said anything else.
---
Mrs. Nam came at six.
She hadn't called ahead. She was carrying glutinous rice cakes she made for occasions she considered worth marking, and she sat in her chair and ate one and gave one to each of them and talked about the district festival and the new streetlight and the neighbor on the eleventh floor who had finally accepted that the demon ward seals were not effective.
She talked for forty minutes.
Mien sat across from her and listened with the whole attention she gave to things. She asked about the festival. She asked how long the streetlight installation would take. She asked what Mrs. Nam thought about the demon ward seal situation, which produced a detailed and entertaining answer.
Lam Uyen sat and drank his tea and watched the two of them.
He thought about Traffic. He thought about the sweep in four days. He thought about the contingency plan on the shelf.
He thought about the vendor with the flower stall who had worked the same corner for twelve years and then one day hadn't.
He thought about the quality of the room around him — the lamp making its circle, the map on the windowsill, the jacket on the sofa arm, the spare chair at the corner of the desk, two women talking about a streetlight installation as if it mattered.
It did. Because the light at the end of the block was a thing that mattered to people who lived here.
He thought: this is what Traffic won't see. What Dieu won't read from a report. What can't be measured by a scanner.
Mrs. Nam was saying something about the neighbor's wife, and Mien was laughing — the real one, the one he had seen on the camera twelve days ago and had looked at twice before looking away.
He did not look away.
When Mrs. Nam stood to go, she looked between them in the specific way she had been looking between them since the beginning — not evaluating, just seeing. She patted Mien's hand.
"Stay," she said. Not a request. A word she had given the room.
She left.
The room was quiet.
Mien looked at the door for a moment. Then at him.
"I want to still be here after the sweep," she said.
Not a question. A statement of what was true, offered directly, because saying it plainly was more honest than dressing it up.
"I know," he said.
She looked at the window.
He looked at the contingency plan on the shelf. At the map. At the jacket. At the spare chair.
Four days.
They had done everything they could do.
They were still here.
The lamp made its circle.
---
He worked until eleven.
The secondary analysis, the sweep timing, the final contingency plan update. All complete by nine. He sat with the finished document on his screen and looked at it — five versions, sub-sections, three weeks of work.
He thought about "not a plan, but not wrong."
He thought about "I understand."
He thought about "I want to still be here after the sweep" and "I know."
He had told her something he hadn't told anyone. Not the wound — not yet — but the outline of it. The shape of how he had come here and why he had stayed, and that the staying was not the same as the arriving.
She had said two words and they had been enough.
He thought about that, in the way he had been thinking about things lately — not filing them, not categorizing them, just sitting with them in the part of himself that was becoming less about accounting and more about simply knowing.
The ambient reading: twenty-eight point six. Stable.
Four days.
He was aware that four days from now, everything he had built would be tested against Traffic operatives in the building and Dieu's open question and the sealed entity at twenty-eight point six making tea and learning fish sauce ratios.
He was aware of the thirty-to-forty-day estimate after the sweep.
He was aware that when she woke up tomorrow he would make two cups of tea at the right temperature.
That was also true.
He turned off the lamp.
Not a plan, but not wrong.
He went to sleep.
Tomorrow was day twenty-one. Three walkthroughs. Four days to the sweep.
The room held its quality.
He was still here.
You've reached the end of this chapter
