The sixth version of the contingency plan was different from everything that had come before it.
Versions one through five had been written around the assumption that the threat was something he could define and measure — ambient percentages, scan thresholds, Traffic sweep windows, Dieu's detection ability, Co Tham's background connections. All of those were real threats. All of them were manageable through the specific kind of careful, precise work he was good at.
Version six couldn't be written that way.
He had been at the desk since six in the morning, working through it, and the document kept resisting the structure he tried to impose on it. Every time he attempted to formalize the principle — build visible truth from safe true things — it collapsed into either vague strategy or tactical detail that missed the point.
He saved what he had and set it aside.
Mien came out of the sleeping quarters at six-twenty, looked at the display — twenty-seven point three, overnight passive decline — and came to the center of the room without being asked.
He called the starting level. She held it for thirty minutes. The number stayed within a half-point variance.
"Done," he said.
She opened her eyes, looked at the display, then looked at him — the look that had become how she began conversations she considered important.
"Tell me about version six," she said.
He told her.
She listened with the whole attention she gave to things. When he finished, she was quiet for a moment.
"So the strategy," she said, "is to become actually present in this place. Not to simulate presence. To have it."
"Yes."
"And the challenge is that I've been here twenty-seven days and I'm already present. The simulation has been catching up to the reality, not the other way around."
He looked at her.
"You've been thinking about this," he said.
"I've been living it," she said. She looked at the window. "What do I do specifically? To make the visible truth more visible?"
He paused.
The question seemed straightforward. It wasn't. Because the answer was that there was nothing specific she needed to do — the visible truth was already there. The challenge was not creating it but letting it be seen.
"Nothing specific," he said. "Just — be here."
She looked at him.
"You've never done that," she said.
He looked at the document on his screen.
"No," he said.
She was quiet for a moment. Then, not unkindly: "Have you ever tried?"
He looked at the window.
"I'm working on it," he said.
She nodded — the nod that filed things — and went to make breakfast.
---
Mrs. Nam knocked at nine-fifteen.
She was carrying a bag of ingredients: glutinous rice, banana leaves, the specific kind of sugar she bought from the vendor at the far end of the market. She was wearing her cooking apron under her outdoor jacket, which meant she had come directly from her kitchen.
"I'm making rice cakes for the weekend," she said to Mien. "Come help. You can learn."
Mien looked at him.
He looked at her.
The look was brief — the specific check of two people who had learned to read each other's signals without words. He gave no signal because there was no signal to give. This was exactly what version six needed.
"Okay," Mien said.
She followed Mrs. Nam out.
He watched the door close. Then he went back to the desk.
---
He worked on version six for two hours.
The document kept improving and resisting completion in the same way, which was probably because it wasn't that kind of document. The previous versions had been solvable problems. This one was a description of a state he was trying to maintain.
He saved it at the two-hour mark.
He checked the camera feed.
He had not been monitoring it the way he had been monitoring it in the sweep run-up. He had opened it at ten o'clock, noted that all was quiet, and closed it.
He opened it again now.
The feed showed Mrs. Nam's first-floor window. The light was warm, active, moving. He could see silhouettes — the specific configuration of people working on something at a table.
He watched it for approximately forty seconds.
Then he noticed that he was watching it and checked whether that was tactical.
It was not tactical.
He closed the feed and went back to version six.
---
Mien came back at eleven-forty-five, carrying a small plate covered with a cloth.
She set it on the desk. Lifted the cloth.
Six rice cakes. Four with reasonably squared corners. Two with the folding slightly looser.
"The corner on that one," he said, indicating the left edge.
Mien looked at where he was pointing. "I know. Mrs. Nam said it was fine."
"It's fine for eating. For presentation—"
"It's not for presentation," she said. "It's for eating."
He looked at the plate.
She sat down in the spare chair. "Mrs. Nam said the first batch is always practice. You make them to learn the feeling of it, not to get them right."
He considered this. "That's inefficient."
"Yes." She picked up one of the better-folded ones and offered it to him. "She also said the imperfect ones taste the same."
He took it. Ate it.
Good — the specific good of fresh ingredients and work put into a thing.
She was watching him.
"Well?" she said.
"Good," he said.
She ate one herself, looking at the ceiling while she chewed, making the expression of someone evaluating something seriously.
"The ratio is right," she said. "Mrs. Nam's recipe. I wrote it down." She looked at him. "Miss Hoa came by while we were making them."
He looked up.
"She just stopped in," Mien said. "Mrs. Nam's door was open. She stayed for about half an hour." She paused. "She asked if I was planning to stay."
He waited.
"I said I didn't know but I was thinking about it." She looked at him. "She said the building could use someone who paid attention. She meant it as a compliment."
He looked at the plate.
"She said the neighborhood watch group was looking for people," Mien continued. "Residents who keep an eye out for things that don't belong. She asked if I might be interested."
He looked at her.
"What did you say?" he said.
"I said I didn't know how long I'd be here." She looked at the plate. "She said that was fine. That the offer would stay open."
He processed that. Then: "Do you want to?"
She was quiet for a moment — genuinely thinking, not tactical calculation.
"I don't know if I'll be here long enough," she said.
"That's a real answer."
She looked at him. "But if I am here long enough — then yes."
He looked at the window.
They were talking about her being here long enough. They had been talking about things like that, in various registers, for the past two weeks. Not explicitly — but in the direction of explicit.
"Then the answer is yes," he said. "If you're here long enough. And the other part — the not knowing — is also the right answer."
She held his gaze for a moment. "Both can be true."
He looked at the window. "Yes."
---
That evening, after dinner, he was reviewing version six when he said it.
Not planned.
"Today I watched you learn how to belong here."
Mien looked up from the book.
He looked at the document. He had said it and he was not taking it back.
"Learn how to belong?" she said.
"Not the surface version. Not the cover story." He looked at the window. "The part where you stopped checking whether you were doing it right and started just doing it."
She was quiet for a moment.
"I didn't realize that happened," she said.
"It happened around the second hour of the rice cake session. I could see it on the camera." He paused. "You stopped performing 'person who is learning to make rice cakes' and started being 'person who is making rice cakes.' The quality of the attention changed."
She looked at him.
"You were watching the camera," she said.
"Briefly."
She was quiet for a moment. Then:
"That's what belonging feels like, isn't it. When you stop having to think about it."
He looked at the window. "I think so."
She looked at the book in her lap — not reading, just looking. Then she looked at him.
"You do it too," she said. "You don't see it because you're inside it. But you do."
He looked at the screen.
"The morning perimeter check," she said. "You don't do it to monitor the perimeter. You do it because it's how you start the day. The route is part of how you think." A pause. "The vendor names. The tree. The dog named Cục. You carry all of that not because it's useful but because it's yours."
He looked at the window.
He looked at it for a moment — the city outside, the street, the corner where the flame tree used to be.
"Yes," he said.
She looked at him.
"You don't have to keep working tonight," she said.
He looked at the document.
"Version six—"
"Will still be there tomorrow." She picked up her book. "You've been at that screen for twelve hours."
He looked at the screen. At the document. At the principles he had been trying to formalize.
He closed the document.
She was already reading.
He sat back and looked at the window for a while — the city at night, the specific quality of the light, the street that had been his street in some way that had nothing to do with ownership.
He thought: you carry all of that not because it's useful but because it's yours.
Outside, the System flagged a passive update: Co Tham had added C-7 to his active relationship building list. Visiting family member — inconclusive profile, follow-up required. Priority: medium.
He read it. Medium priority. Not high. Not low.
A medium-priority follow-up item resolved itself if nothing elevated its status. If C-7 continued to be unremarkable. If the visiting family member continued to be exactly what she was in every visible way.
He thought about Mien in Mrs. Nam's kitchen, and the quality of attention that had changed from performing to being.
She doesn't need me to manage this, he thought. She just needs to keep being here.
He saved the update to the log. Closed the document.
---
Day twenty-eight arrived with the rain.
Mien was at the east window when he got up.
"Rain," she said.
"Yes."
He made the second cup and set it on the windowsill. She moved it closer without looking at it.
The session: ambient held at twenty-seven point two. One point lower. He noted it.
"Mrs. Nam will have her good coat on," he said, looking at the rain.
Mien looked at him.
"She goes out regardless," he said. "But she only wears the good coat when it's raining. She said her husband bought it."
Mien was quiet for a moment. "You know that."
"She told me. Year two." He paused. "I wasn't expecting to need it and then I did."
She looked at him in the specific way she looked at him when he said something that told her more than he had intended.
"What else do you know?" she said.
He looked at the rain.
He told her about the building. Not a briefing — just talking. The fourth-floor couple who still kept their emergency bags ready out of habit that had outlasted the emergency. The seventh-floor tutor and the specific kind of afternoon noise between three and five. The basement access and why it had been sealed and what Mrs. Nam thought about it.
Mien listened and asked questions — not tactical, just curious. The other kind.
At some point he became aware that he was talking to her differently than he talked to most people. Not with careful calibration. Just talking, to someone who was actually listening.
He had not had many conversations like this in three years.
"You know all of this about them," she said, "and they don't know anything about you."
He looked at the window.
"That's how it works," he said.
"Is it?"
He looked at her.
"It doesn't have to be," she said.
He looked at the rain.
He thought about what that would mean. The intermediate version, where the people in this building knew slightly more about who was living among them than nothing.
"No," he said. "It doesn't have to be."
She looked at the rain.
They sat with that.
Outside, the rain came down. Mrs. Nam would have her good coat on. The fourth-floor couple would have their bags checked. The seventh-floor tutor would have his afternoon session.
He knew all of that.
It was a kind of belonging — the quiet kind, of someone who paid attention to a place without necessarily being included in return.
He had been in it for three years.
He thought: it doesn't have to be.
He thought: we'll figure it out.
He turned back to the desk.
Version six was waiting.
He opened it, and the rain came down, and the morning continued.
