The vacant lot east of C-7 had no official name on the district map.
Residents called it "the back lot." Before the demon world invasion, it had been a half-finished construction project belonging to some real estate developer who went bankrupt mid-build. The foundation had been poured, the first floor had gone up partway, and then everything stopped. In 2219, when the demon world invaded and the city entered an emergency state that never ended, no one gave the unfinished structure another thought. The half-raised concrete walls simply stood there, gradually becoming the place where people dumped broken bricks, old pipes, and sheets of rusted metal — all the things that had nowhere to go in a city pulling inward around its fortified residential zones.
Lam Uyen walked through the unlit shortcut alley connecting C-7 to the back lot, hands in his jacket pockets, footsteps even.
[Signal: Stable. Distance: 47 meters and closing.]
The System guided with numbers, as always. He didn't need a flashlight — three years of walking this area at night had tuned his eyes to this level of dark. A crescent moon sat low to the west, just enough to distinguish one shade of shadow from a deeper one.
No wind. No sound except his footsteps on the broken brick surface.
He wasn't hurrying. Whatever it was had been here before he found it, and was still here now. No sign of movement, no sign of aggression. It was simply there, silent in the way that very large things are silent — not because they are peaceful, but because they don't need to make noise.
[Distance: 12 meters.]
He stopped.
And he saw it.
---
Lying among the broken bricks and rusted pipe sections, the cocoon was unremarkable in size. About as large as a medium moving box, perhaps slightly smaller. Its surface was ink-black — not the black of metal or fabric, but the kind of black that absorbed light without returning any, the kind that the eye couldn't grip, kept sliding off.
But it was contracting.
Slowly, steadily, rhythmically — like a chambered heart decreasing in size, like something trying to become less than what it was. No sound. No light. Only that contracting motion, patient and unceasing.
The System issued a second alert, stronger than the first:
[Warning: Signal unstable — oscillating outside standard measurement range. Recommendation: WITHDRAW IMMEDIATELY. Minimum safe radius: 200 meters.]
Lam Uyen read the recommendation.
Then he crouched down.
The distance between him and the cocoon was about two meters. Close enough to see detail, far enough to have time to react if needed. He didn't know how to react — the System hadn't told him what this thing was, what rank it was, what kind of threat it posed — but three years of working alone in the dark had taught him that observation was always better than moving first.
He observed.
The cocoon didn't attack. Didn't respond to his presence. Its surface continued contracting at its own rhythm, no faster, no slower. He extended one hand — not touching, just holding his palm about ten centimeters from the surface — and felt: no warmth, no cold, no force radiating outward. Nothing. As though the air between his hand and that surface was empty in an absolute sense.
But the System was making noise.
[Life signal confirmed. Species: UNCLASSIFIED. Rank: UNCLASSIFIED. Status: Condensation — final phase. Estimated completion: 3-7 minutes.]
Final phase. Meaning this process was nearly done. Whatever was inside the cocoon was about to emerge.
Lam Uyen checked the time: 11:23 PM. Then looked back at the cocoon.
He didn't stand up.
---
Four minutes later, the System did something it had never done in three years of operation.
It activated a Capture command without receiving one from him.
He felt it happen before he understood what it was — a field pressure from the System reaching out toward the cocoon, automatic, passing through no decision of his, like the reflex of something recognizing its own kind. Or recognizing something larger than itself and responding the only way it knew how.
For one second — exactly one second — the entire System shook.
Not the way something shakes when attacked. The way something shakes when it is receiving a load beyond its design capacity. Twenty-three demon units currently on standby rang out simultaneously in his mind — not the sounds of living creatures, but the sound of a system running emergency processes, a sound he had never heard before. Then all of it went silent.
The System's interior display went dark for about two seconds.
Then it came back, showing only a single line:
[Capture complete. Rank: ██████████. Processing data — please wait.]
Lam Uyen stood still and looked at that line.
The System had never used the word "please." In three years, it had never used any word with social register. It was a tool — precise, cold, efficient. That "please" was so anomalous that he read it twice to make sure he hadn't misread.
He hadn't.
The cocoon began to dissolve.
Not shatter — no explosion, no fragments flying outward. It dissolved, from the outside in, its absolute-black surface fading and disappearing the way salt disappears in warm water, slow and irreversible. Lam Uyen didn't move.
First came a hand. Fingers closed, palm pressed down against the ground.
Then a wrist. A forearm. A shoulder.
Then a young woman lying curled among the broken bricks, long black hair covering most of her face, wearing something that resembled dark cloth but wasn't clothing in any conventional sense — it looked more like layers of the cocoon having conformed to the shape of what was inside it and hardened into fabric. No visible injuries. No blood. Skin pale as someone who had lost a great deal of blood, but her breathing was steady and even.
Just a person.
She looked completely ordinary, if you set aside every single piece of context surrounding how she had just appeared.
Lam Uyen stood still and looked for a few more seconds — scanning the perimeter by sight, checking System signals, checking whether anything was moving in the surrounding darkness.
Nothing.
Just her, him, and the silent vacant lot.
---
He crouched down beside her and checked her breathing one more time — steady, stable, no signs of respiratory failure — then stood up and did a final visual sweep of the lot.
No cameras in this corner. He knew that because two years ago, when the district administration installed a new surveillance system, he had walked the three-block radius to map the blind spots. Not because he had a specific plan — just the habit of someone accustomed to keeping secrets. Knowing where no eyes watched was useful information, even before knowing when.
Now he knew when.
He didn't call the district office. Didn't call the nearest hunter team. Didn't report through any of the standard channels that protocol required when encountering an unidentified entity in a residential zone.
The reason: the System had captured her without his authorization. And that fact — whatever it meant, and he didn't fully understand what it meant yet — had placed her inside his jurisdiction in a way that made handing her over to someone else wrong. Not wrong in any abstract ethical sense. Wrong in a practical sense — like handing someone a key for a lock they didn't know how to open.
A second reason, which he didn't articulate in the moment but also didn't deny: if the district office or any organization learned that an entity exceeding SSS-threshold had appeared in C-7, they would come. And when they came, they would ask why an F-rank security guard had been at this location at midnight, and why the entity had been captured through a method inconsistent with any registered ability.
He didn't want to answer those questions.
Lam Uyen leaned down and lifted her carefully.
Lighter than expected. Not because she was small — but because the sensation of lifting her was like lifting something that hadn't yet fully decided how heavy it was.
---
The guard's sleeping quarters looked smaller than usual with a second person lying on the old sofa.
He set her down, took the thin blanket from the shelf — the cheap cotton one he'd bought when he first moved in, faded now but still intact — and spread it over her. Then he pulled the chair out and sat about a meter from the sofa, back against the wall.
The System was still processing.
[Analyzing data... 23%... 24%...]
Abnormally slow. The System processed B-rank demon data in under three seconds. This had been running for ten minutes and was barely past twenty percent.
Lam Uyen looked at the girl sleeping on his sofa. Her hair still covered most of her face. Her breathing was still steady. She looked ordinary enough that he could have convinced himself she was someone who had fainted from exhaustion — rather than someone who had just come out of a dark-matter cocoon at midnight.
If he had wanted to convince himself of that.
He didn't.
There was something meditative about waiting in the dark beside a thing he couldn't identify. He had learned patience three years ago, the way you learn something when the alternative is making mistakes that can't be undone. He had made those mistakes before — in a different time, a different part of the city, when he had moved too quickly and acted too visibly and trusted that being strong enough was the same as being careful enough.
He knew now that it wasn't.
So he sat in the dark with the sleeping girl, and he waited, and he thought about all the ways this was going to be complicated and how none of those complications changed what he was going to do next, because the System had already decided for him when it moved without being told to.
He had just caught up to a conclusion his own hands had already reached.
He made a cup of instant coffee from the electric kettle in the corner and drank it standing up, because sitting felt too settled, too much like declaring something finished when it clearly wasn't. Outside the window, the city's nighttime sounds continued — a distant siren, the low hum of an emergency generator, the ordinary noise of a world that had made its peace with being extraordinary in all the wrong ways.
He thought about the word "please" again. In three years, the System had communicated through clean functional language: detected, confirmed, eliminated, proceeding. Somewhere in the processing of whatever she was, it had produced that one word of something else. He wasn't sure what that meant. It sat in the back of his mind the way small anomalies did — quiet, persistent, waiting for more information before deciding whether to become significant.
Near dawn, a new line appeared on the System's display:
[Special Contract: LIFE-DEATH BOND has been automatically established during Capture. Warning: This contract cannot be voided by a third party. Effect: If either party dies, the surviving party will undergo a severe chain reaction. Confirm to proceed?]
Lam Uyen looked at that line.
Looked at the sleeping girl.
Looked at the line again.
The System was asking whether he confirmed — but technically, the contract had already been established. The question was only whether he acknowledged it. Whether he chose to know about it.
[Confirm.]
He inputted without spending more time on it. He'd made the decision when he lifted her off the vacant lot — this confirmation was procedural.
Dawn light began coming through the small window.
---
She woke up a little past six in the morning, when the first light was drawing a pale yellow line across the booth's tile floor.
Lam Uyen heard the small sound — fabric shifting on the sofa — and looked up from the instant noodles he was eating. She was sitting up, hands resting in her lap, hair falling loose down both sides of her face. Her eyes opened — dark, clear, nothing like the expression of someone waking disoriented — but the expression of someone processing information, taking in everything around her in systematic sequence.
Ceiling. Window. Desk. Monitor. The instant noodles. Him.
She stopped at him.
Lam Uyen put down his chopsticks.
"Are you hurt?" The first and most practical question.
She shook her head slightly. Then looked down at her own hands — palm up, palm down — as if verifying they belonged to her.
"Do you remember your name?"
This time she paused longer before shaking her head. Not the shake of someone refusing to answer — but of someone genuinely searching and finding nothing to find. There was an emptiness to it that he hadn't seen before.
"Do you remember anything? Anything at all."
She looked up. Thought about it. Then spoke, voice faint and rough, like someone who hadn't used it in a long time: "Fragments. But they don't fit together."
He nodded. Looked out the window for a second. The System was still processing — seventy-one percent now, rank still locked. He didn't know what she was. Didn't know where she came from. Didn't know why the System had responded to her the way it did.
He only knew one thing: she needed a name.
Not for any particular practical reason. But because she was sitting in his room looking at him with the expression of someone who didn't have an answer to the most basic question, and that created a small, persistent gap he wasn't accustomed to leaving alone.
He looked at her for a few seconds — the way someone looks when searching for something to hold onto: black hair, pale skin, both hands still resting in her lap, quiet and uncertain about what to do with them.
"Mien," he said.
She repeated it, testing the weight of the word in her mouth: "Mien."
Lam Uyen looked away — at the window, at the noodle bowl, anywhere but her. The muscle along his jaw tensed slightly, barely noticeable.
"Yeah," he said. "For now."
---
She sat quietly on the sofa while he washed the noodle bowl at the small sink in the corner. No more questions. No movement. Just looking around with those same quiet eyes, processing everything at her own pace.
Lam Uyen dried his hands, then turned back to look at her.
"I'm going to buy food. Stay here. Don't go outside."
Mien looked at him. "You're not going to ask anything else?"
"Ask what?"
"About me. Who I am. Where I came from." She paused. "Why aren't you asking."
Lam Uyen looked at her for a second. The real answer was: he was waiting for the System to finish processing. When the rank was confirmed, when the data was complete, he would know what to ask. Asking before having enough information was a waste of questions.
The answer he gave: "Because you don't know either."
Mien looked at him for a few more seconds.
Then she nodded, lightly, as though that was an acceptable answer.
---
He was at the door when she asked it.
"Do you know what I am?"
Lam Uyen stopped with his hand on the doorknob. Three seconds of silence — not the silence of someone trying to avoid the question, but of someone precisely measuring how much they knew and how much they should say.
The System was at eighty-nine percent. Rank still locked. He knew she had come from inside a dark-matter cocoon. He knew his System — the one that had measured everything from F to SSS without missing once in three years — had encountered something it couldn't read and responded by triggering a special-class contract on its own.
He knew enough to understand she was not an ordinary person. Not an ordinary demon.
And he knew enough to understand that the true answer to that question, if he spoke it, would change something he wasn't ready to change.
"No," he said.
Not a lie. The rank was still locked, the data still processing — he genuinely didn't know what she was in the precise sense the question implied.
But not the whole truth either.
He opened the door, stepped out, closed it behind him.
In the hallway, he stopped for a second with his hand still resting on the door, looking down at the familiar tile floor.
[Processing... 91%...]
He let go of the door and walked toward the elevator.
What he hadn't told her — and hadn't entirely told himself — was that the question she had just asked wasn't the question of someone who had lost their memory. Someone who had lost their memory asked "who am I." Someone who had lost their memory asked "where did I come from."
She asked "what am I."
And that — that careful choice of words, whether conscious or not — was the first thing this morning that made him feel something small and nameless stir somewhere behind his sternum.
The elevator arrived. He stepped in.
