The morning market near C-7 ran along the sidewalk of a street that had once been zoned commercial, back when zoning still meant something.
Now it meant a double row of folding tables and plastic crates running for about sixty meters, covered by mismatched tarps strung between whatever anchor points were available — lamp posts, fence rails, the rusted scaffolding of a building that had been "under renovation" since 2220. It opened at five and closed when the sellers ran out of things to sell, which varied. Some days that was nine in the morning. Some days it was seven.
Lam Uyen arrived at half past six, while the light was still the pale gray of early morning and most of the complex was still asleep.
He bought what he usually bought when he bothered making a real breakfast: two bread rolls, a small bag of eggs, a carton of long-life milk, and a packet of instant rice porridge mix that claimed to be chicken-flavored and was not. He paid, received change, nodded to the woman behind the egg crate — who had been selling there for two years and had never once asked him a single personal question, which he respected — and turned to walk back.
The System was still running in the background. He was aware of it the way he was aware of his own heartbeat — constant, present, not requiring active attention. It had been processing for hours now. Whatever it was working through, it was taking its time.
He walked back through the shortcut alley, bag in one hand, and thought about SS.
Not with alarm. Alarm was a response to things that were uncertain, and the fact of her rank was now certain. What he was doing, in the practical and unhurried way he did most things, was calculating. An SS-rank demon, self-sealed at 97.3% capacity, currently operating on 2.7% of her full strength. In that reduced state she had still caused his System to quake when it tried to process her. At full capacity — he didn't complete the calculation. There wasn't enough information to complete it, and he had learned a long time ago that projections built on incomplete data were usually wrong in the direction of underestimation.
What he did know: she was in his room. She had eaten his noodles. She had asked him a question he had not fully answered.
He didn't know what to do with any of that yet.
The alley was quiet. A stray cat watched him from atop a collapsed section of wall, yellow eyes tracking his movement with the particular indifference of a creature that had concluded the world was unlikely to surprise it further.
Lam Uyen walked past the cat without stopping.
---
He pushed the door open and she wasn't on the sofa.
The blanket was folded — not the casual fold of someone who had given it a quick shake and left it, but the deliberate fold of someone who had spent time getting the edges to line up. Neatly. Almost precisely. He looked at it for a moment before scanning the room.
She was standing in the far corner, back to him, one hand resting flat against the wall. Not touching anything else. Not moving. Just standing there with the stillness of something that had decided to be very, very still.
[Warning: Residual demon energy detected from SS Entity — low level — currently being absorbed into surrounding environment.]
The alert came before he fully registered what he was looking at. He read it, then checked the standby roster. The E-rank Venomfang Rat he had captured three weeks ago — the one he kept around because it was small and easy to maintain and occasionally useful for distraction purposes — was flagged with a new status indicator he had never seen before: Dissolving.
Not eliminated. Not escaped. Dissolving.
He set the grocery bag down on the desk without making a sound and looked at her back. She was still standing exactly as she had been. Her hand was still flat on the wall. The line of her shoulders was relaxed, completely unaware, the posture of someone standing because they wanted to stand, not because they were doing anything in particular.
She didn't know.
That was the thing that clarified everything about the situation in a single instant. She wasn't feeding deliberately. She wasn't aware that an E-rank unit from his System was currently being disassembled and pulled into her at a cellular level. She was standing in a corner because she had woken up and perhaps found the sofa too small to think in, and she was standing the way someone stands when they need to feel the specific solidity of a wall, and she was absorbing demon energy the way breathing absorbs oxygen: automatically, without thought, because it was what her body knew how to do.
He looked at the Dissolving indicator on the Venomfang Rat's entry.
Then he said: "Are you hungry?"
---
She turned around.
In the fraction of a second before her eyes fully settled on him, he saw it — a thin film of silver light crossing her irises, deep and cold as moonlight on still water in the middle of winter, there and then not there, gone so completely that a person who hadn't been watching for it would have filed the moment under lighting effect and moved on.
He didn't move on.
She looked at him with ordinary dark eyes and said, "Yes."
Lam Uyen held her gaze for a moment — two seconds, which was longer than he usually held anyone's gaze — and then he turned to the grocery bag and started taking things out.
"Sit down," he said. "I'll make something."
She sat. He didn't look at her again right away.
The small electric burner in the corner of the room was technically meant for heating water for the security booth — the district administration had provided it along with a box of instant coffee packets three years ago and had not checked on it since. He had long since appropriated it for actual cooking. The eggs took four minutes. He sliced the bread, found the small container of fish sauce he kept in the drawer because instant noodles were better with it, and assembled something that was roughly a breakfast.
He was aware of her watching him the entire time.
Not the fixed stare of someone trying to unsettle him. The unguarded watching of someone who was genuinely interested in what he was doing, tracking each movement with the focused attention of a person who had woken up in an unfamiliar world and had decided that learning how the eggs were made was a reasonable place to start.
He put a plate in front of her and sat down across the desk.
She ate quickly. Not with desperation — more like someone who had discovered that eating was an extremely interesting activity and wanted to complete the full experience as efficiently as possible. He watched her from the corner of his eye and thought: 97.3% sealed. On 2.7% she had dissolved an E-rank unit just by standing near it. She was eating scrambled eggs like someone who had recently learned that having a body had advantages she hadn't fully catalogued yet.
The Venomfang Rat's entry had gone completely dark on the System roster.
He picked up his bread roll and ate.
---
The questions started when she was halfway through her second egg.
"What is that?" She pointed at the monitor bank on the desk — four small screens showing different angles of the building exterior.
"Security cameras."
"All of them show outside."
"Yes."
"Is there one that shows inside?"
"No."
She looked at the screens for a moment, processing. Then: "Why is the hallway light yellow?"
"Cheaper bulbs."
"The window." She turned toward it. "What's outside the window?"
"The street."
"Beyond the street."
"More streets. Then the district boundary. Then District 9."
"Is that where the smoke was this morning?"
He looked up from his bread. She was watching him with the directness he had noticed before — the expression that belonged to someone doing active inventory, not making conversation. He thought about the question. She had been inside the room all morning. The window faced the wrong direction to see the smoke from where she sat.
"How do you know there was smoke this morning?"
She tilted her head slightly. "I don't know. I just know."
He filed that.
"Yes," he said. "District 9."
"Was anyone hurt?"
"Some."
She looked at her plate for a moment. Then looked back up. "Is that normal?"
"Yes."
She received that the same way she had received everything so far — not with shock, not with dismissal, with the careful acceptance of someone assembling a picture from pieces and reserving judgment until more pieces arrived. He found himself thinking, without meaning to, that this was an unusually functional way to process information about the end of the world as a baseline condition of daily life.
"What is this place called?"
"C-7. Complex C, sector 7."
"And you live here."
"I work here."
"Is it the same?"
He paused slightly. "Close enough."
She almost asked another question — he could see it forming — and then she reached over and tugged once at his sleeve, very lightly, two fingers curling around the fabric at his wrist and releasing before he had fully registered it. He went still.
"I'm sorry," she said, not sounding particularly sorry, more like someone who had learned the phrase and was applying it in a context that seemed appropriate. "I have more questions. I'll try to space them out."
Lam Uyen looked at where she had touched the sleeve. Then looked at the window.
The muscle along his jaw tightened, briefly. He was aware of it.
"Ask," he said.
---
So she asked.
Not about herself — that territory seemed to register to her as unproductive, a room with no door, not worth standing in front of. She asked about everything around the absence of herself. The year. The invasion timeline. How the registration system worked. Whether everyone had abilities or only some people. Whether the demons were all hostile or if there were exceptions.
He answered each one. Concise, factual, no elaboration.
But he answered. Every single one.
He was on the third or fourth answer when he became aware of the anomaly — not in her questions, but in himself. He had been in this building for three years. In three years, he had exchanged sentences with the residents when required, with the district office when required, with vendors when transacting. He had never explained anything to anyone unless an explanation was directly operationally necessary.
He was currently explaining the structure of the hunter guild registration system to someone who had existed for less than twelve hours.
He didn't stop explaining.
She listened with her whole attention, which was a specific and somewhat unusual quality — the kind of listening that didn't reserve part of itself for formulating a response, that simply received what was being said and processed it without immediate output. He had encountered it before, rarely, in people who were very good at what they did. He hadn't expected to encounter it here.
When he finished explaining about the guilds versus the district administration, she was quiet for a moment. Then she asked: "So which one do you belong to?"
"Neither."
She looked at him.
"F-rank security guard," he said. "No identifiable combat ability. According to the registration."
She looked at him for a longer moment this time.
"According to the registration," she repeated.
"Yes."
She didn't push it. She moved to the next question instead — whether the demons came from a specific location or appeared randomly — and he answered that one too, and the conversation continued in its even, undemonstrative way, question and answer and question, until he stood up to clear the plates and she asked the one that stopped him.
"Am I dangerous to you?"
He set the plates back down.
She wasn't looking at him with anxiety, or with the calculated expression of someone trying to extract a particular answer. She was looking at him the way she had looked at everything else this morning — inventory expression, piece-assembling, genuinely wanting the accurate version of the information.
He looked at her. Directly, which he hadn't done since the moment in the corner when her eyes had gone silver and come back.
Two seconds.
"I don't know yet," he said.
She held his gaze for a moment. Then nodded, once, in the way she had nodded at "because you don't know either" — the nod of someone who could work with an honest answer, who preferred it to a comfortable one.
He picked up the plates and went to the sink.
There was something unfamiliar in his chest that he couldn't categorize, and he was intelligent enough to recognize that it was the kind of thing that didn't benefit from immediate categorization. He washed the plates and put them away and told himself it was a data point and that data points were neutral until there were enough of them to form a pattern.
He almost believed it.
---
The morning shift ran from six to two, officially. In practice it ran from whenever he woke up until whenever the building stopped needing something, which was never, so the shift was continuous and the "six to two" was a number that existed on a form somewhere in the district office and nowhere else.
He did his rounds. Checked the basement access points. Checked the perimeter sensors he had installed himself along the eastern wall, the ones that weren't in any official report. Checked the System roster, which showed twenty-two units now instead of twenty-three, and noted the absence with the same quiet practicality he noted everything.
He came back to the booth at seven forty-five to find Mien awake and sitting cross-legged on the sofa, examining the fire exit diagram he kept pinned above the door.
"Is this accurate?" she asked when he came in.
"Mostly."
"What's inaccurate?"
He looked at the diagram. "The third-floor access is blocked. Has been since last year. Debris from a D-rank incident that was never cleared."
She looked back at the diagram. "So if there was a fire on the third floor—"
"You'd go to the fourth and take the northern stairwell."
She nodded, updating what was presumably a mental map of a building she had been in for less than a day. He found himself wondering how detailed that map already was.
She had asked about District 9 before she could have seen the smoke. She had known he wasn't F-rank without him saying so. He filed both observations alongside the silver in her eyes and the Venomfang Rat's empty slot, building a picture he didn't yet have enough pieces for.
He hung up his jacket and started a new cup of water in the kettle.
"Tea?" he asked.
She looked over at him from the sofa. "Is that an option?"
"Yes."
"Then yes."
He made two cups. Set one on the edge of the desk within her reach without comment. She picked it up without comment. Outside the window the city had fully woken up now — the sounds of a population moving carefully through a landscape that might or might not be safe on any given morning, having built routines around a level of ongoing danger that had simply become the texture of daily life.
Mien wrapped both hands around the cup and looked out the window.
"It's louder than I expected," she said. "The city."
"What were you expecting?"
She considered this with genuine attention, as though the question deserved an actual answer. "I don't know. Something quieter, maybe. Or emptier." She paused. "It seems like a lot of people just... kept going."
"They did."
"That's—" She stopped. Started again. "I think that's good. I'm not sure why I think that, but I do."
Lam Uyen drank his tea and looked at the monitor screens and didn't say anything.
He thought, once, about the silver in her eyes.
He thought, once, about the way she had asked "am I dangerous to you" rather than "am I in danger" — the orientation of the question outward rather than inward, toward him rather than toward herself, even without memory, even without knowing who she was or what the world was.
He did not think about what that meant.
The day settled in around them, ordinary and otherwise, and the System ran quietly, and the twenty-two units maintained their positions.
---
That night, after she had fallen asleep with the precision-folded blanket pulled back over her, Lam Uyen opened the System roster and looked at it carefully.
The Venomfang Rat's entry was gone. Not marked eliminated, not marked inactive — simply absent, as though the slot had been quietly reclaimed. Two of the lower-ranked units were showing slightly diminished energy readings.
[SS Entity: passive absorption ongoing. Rate: low. Current absorption rate sustainable for approximately 14-18 days before lowest-rank units begin dissolution. Recommendation: Provide alternative energy source to prevent roster depletion.]
Fourteen to eighteen days before she would start dissolving his units in her sleep.
He navigated to a section of the System he had opened perhaps three times in three years: the maintenance and logistics menu. At the bottom of the list was a category he had never touched.
[Special Entity Management: SS-class and above.]
He tapped it. The menu that opened was longer than he expected. He read through it methodically, tabbing through subsections, until he found the entry for "Autonomous Energy Provision" — a function that would allow him to redirect a small percentage of ambient energy from his own System activity as a supplemental feed for the SS entity, bypassing the need for her to absorb from the roster units.
It would cost him a small ongoing drain. Manageable.
He looked over at her sleeping face.
Then he enabled the function, set the parameters, and watched the System confirm it without fanfare.
The faint silver in her lashes — a trace he hadn't noticed until this moment, visible only in certain light — seemed, possibly, to settle slightly.
He turned off the screen and sat in the dark for a while, not thinking about the things he was thinking about.
Outside, the city made its nighttime sounds. The girl who had come from inside a dark cocoon breathed evenly in the space that had been his alone for three years.
He sat there until the first light started at the window.
Then he got up and started the morning shift.
You've reached the end of this chapter
