The display read nineteen point eight when he checked it at six-twelve.
He had been checking it more frequently than usual — not from anxiety, or not only from anxiety, but from the specific attention of someone watching a number that was moving toward a threshold and wanting to note exactly when the threshold was crossed. The overnight passive decline had continued, and whatever the entity was doing in the basement maintenance room had been contributing since yesterday's session, and the combined result was nineteen point eight.
Below twenty for the first time.
He wrote it in the log.
He looked at the entity camera. The figure in the corner of the maintenance room was in the same position it had been at ten the previous night — still, the specific quality of stillness that was the entity's resting state.
He wrote: Day 45. Ambient 19.8%. Below standard threshold.
He made tea.
Mien was in the basement. She had been there since five-forty, the second morning of what had become a daily session — she had not asked whether to continue them, she had simply continued them.
He set the second cup aside.
At seven-oh-three, she came up.
She looked at the display.
She looked at him.
"Nineteen point eight," she said.
"Yes."
She looked at the display for a moment.
"Entity is at its lowest output yet," she said. "I showed it the integration technique again — not holding, maintaining. It's getting it faster than I did."
"How much faster?"
"I took three weeks to get from holding to maintaining. It's been at it for two days." She looked at the notebook. "Whatever it was before — whatever its actual capacity is — it has a different relationship with the technique than I do. I learned it as a skill. It's learning it as a rediscovery."
He thought about that. "Like it already knew this approach at some level, and you're helping it remember."
"Yes. Something like that." She picked up the second cup and went to the window.
He looked at the display.
Nineteen point eight. Below the standard Traffic threshold. Six days until the active search reached this area.
The number was good. The number wasn't everything.
---
Mien went to the market at ten.
At ten twenty-seven, the Building B feed showed her coming back through the courtyard — the specific quality of her walk that he had learned to read. He had learned the difference between her processing-walk and her not-processing-walk in week three. This was the processing-walk.
She came through the door.
She put the grocery bag on the desk.
She looked at him.
"Co Tham was at the market," she said.
He set down the pen.
"Tell me," he said.
---
She told him everything.
Co Tham had arrived through Mrs. Nam — the third time Mrs. Nam had served as an inadvertent introduction. The conversation had been short. Friendly. Structured in the way that Co Tham's conversations were always structured: the appearance of casual exchange concealing something more precise.
He had said: "You've been here about six weeks now, right?"
Mien had said: "About that, yes."
She had said it in the register of someone confirming something uninteresting, not the register of someone who had just been given information that shouldn't exist. She had learned that register over forty-five days of practice, and it had held.
She had come back the long way — three extra blocks, two direction changes — to confirm she wasn't being followed.
She hadn't been followed.
He listened to all of it.
Then he looked at the wall.
"Six weeks," he said.
"Yes."
"That's not in any official record."
"No. The sweep report said 'recent visitor.' The partnership form said 'family member, visiting.' No dates. No duration."
He thought about the people who had been watching this building.
"Dieu ran surveillance on C-7 for three weeks," he said. "She was here three times before the sweep. She ran two scans. She did the social reconnaissance in civilian clothes." He paused. "She knows exactly when you arrived."
Mien was quiet.
"She might have mentioned it casually," she said. "Not knowing it would go to Co Tham."
"Or she might have been asked directly and told the truth because she didn't know why it mattered." He thought about it. "Or she might have been pressured."
"Or she might have reported it officially and we just haven't intercepted that specific communication."
He looked at the intercept log. "I need to look at what we have."
She sat down in the spare chair.
He pulled up the intercept log.
---
He worked through the intercepts for two hours.
At one-seventeen, he found it.
[Co Tham to division: visitor at C-7 matches profile of entity associate. Duration of stay confirmed via secondary source. Recommend elevated priority for C-7 in partnership visit schedule. Note: visitor has been present since approximately Week 1 of initial C-7 monitoring period. This predates the inconclusive sweep result and suggests ongoing entity-associated presence rather than coincidental visit.]
Secondary source.
Week 1 of initial C-7 monitoring period. That was the timing of Dieu's first scan — three weeks before the sweep.
He read it again.
The information Co Tham had was accurate. The timing was accurate. The source was someone who had been watching since week one of Dieu's surveillance.
That was Dieu.
He sat with that.
He turned the screen toward Mien.
She read it.
She said: "She might not have known."
"Yes," he said. "Or she was pressured. Traffic has access to its own operative's case records, which would include her surveillance notes. Co Tham could have pulled the timing from those notes without Dieu knowing he had it."
Mien looked at the intercept. "That's possible."
"Yes."
"But it changes her situation either way."
"Yes." He looked at the display: nineteen point eight. "If Co Tham is using her surveillance data, she's become a source whether she intended to be or not. And if Traffic knows she's been adjusting her assessments—"
"She's at risk."
He looked at the intercept.
"I don't know yet," he said. "But she might be."
Mien was quiet for a moment. "What do you do with that?"
He looked at the contingency plan.
"I don't know yet," he said. "I need to think about it."
She looked at the contingency plan.
She didn't ask anything else.
He looked at the plan.
He thought: I need to talk to Dieu directly.
He didn't say that yet.
---
He worked through the afternoon. By four, the ambient had dropped to nineteen point four. He noted it.
He ran the revised calculation. He didn't like the result. Co Tham's elevated attention, combined with the specific information Co Tham now had, might mean enhanced equipment at the partnership visit. Which meant the threshold moved.
He thought about Dieu.
He thought about what it would mean to contact her directly — the risks, the information it would give Traffic about his level of awareness, the specific signal it would send to Co Tham if Dieu reported the contact.
He thought about what it would mean not to contact her.
At six, he made dinner. She made it some nights, he made it others. Tonight he made it, moving through the kitchen in the routine that had accumulated without announcement.
They ate. Neither of them brought up Co Tham, or Dieu, or the intercept. After dinner, she went to the basement for the evening check. He cleared the dishes.
He looked at the window.
He thought: six days.
---
At ten-thirty, he was alone at the desk.
Mien was asleep on the sofa. The entity was stable in the basement. The ambient was nineteen point two.
He looked at the log.
He looked at the entry from day forty: what I said on day forty. That is also still operative.
He looked at it.
He thought: I don't want to lose this before I've had it.
The thought arrived differently than other things had arrived. Not as a strategic consideration, not as an operational risk assessment. As something direct — the specific, simple weight of wanting a thing and being aware that the wanting might outrun the having.
He had said "I want it" on day forty. He had meant it.
He had not thought, until tonight, specifically about the converse: about what it would mean if everything converged and the wanting arrived at the end of it and the having was no longer possible.
He sat with that.
He had been careful, for a long time, about not wanting things that couldn't be unmade. He had built an entire life out of that caution.
And then forty-five days had happened.
He looked at Mien asleep on the sofa.
He thought about the mornings. He thought about two cups of tea at the right temperature. He thought about the map with both their marks and the spare chair and the jacket on the sofa arm that had been there since week three.
He thought about day forty.
He thought: I don't want to lose this before I've had it.
The thought was heavy. Not in the way of despair — in the way of something that was real and therefore had weight, and the weight was the specific weight of something that mattered.
He stood up.
He went to the window.
He said, very quietly, to no one: "I need to talk to Dieu."
Then he went back to the desk and started writing out what he would need to say.
Six days.
He had made harder decisions than this.
He went to work.
---
He set the signal at nine-thirty the next morning.
A specific book placed in the security booth window, spine facing out, one he had never put there before. It would mean nothing to a casual observer and everything to someone who had been watching long enough to know the patterns.
He set the book in the window.
He went back to work.
---
She arrived at eleven-forty.
Not through the main gate — through the eastern lane. Civilian clothes. She did not press the intercom.
He saw her on the camera and went out.
She was at the eastern gate. She had seen the book in the window, had come around.
She looked at him.
"Secondary source," he said.
She was quiet for a moment.
"How long have you known?" she said.
"I found the intercept yesterday. Co Tham said 'visitor duration confirmed via secondary source' and cited week one of the initial monitoring period." He paused. "That's when you started your surveillance."
"Yes." She looked at the gate. "I didn't give him the timeline directly. He found it in my case notes — he has access to my surveillance records, which include timestamps. He connected the dots himself."
"Does he know you've been adjusting the assessments?"
She was quiet for a beat too long.
"Probably," she said.
He processed that. "Are you at risk?"
She looked at him. The expression of someone who had made a decision and was now living in the consequences of it, and had known, when they made the decision, that this was how consequences worked.
"Maybe," she said. "I filed two inconclusive assessments for C-7. I filed three inconclusive assessments for F-9 before the entity moved. Co Tham has been pulling case records — if he looks at the pattern, he'll see the adjustments." She paused. "Or he'll decide the results were within normal variance."
"The entity in F-9," she said. "It's not there anymore."
"No."
"Do you know where it went?"
He looked at her.
She held his gaze. "I'm not asking for Co Tham. I'm asking because I spent three weeks watching something that was scared and alone and trying not to be found, and I made a decision to not tell Traffic about it, and I want to know if that decision did what I hoped it would do."
He thought about the basement maintenance room. He thought about nineteen point eight.
"It's somewhere that's better than the demolished structure," he said.
She looked at him.
"That's enough," she said.
She turned to go.
He said: "If Co Tham puts pressure on you about the assessments — you should know that I can arrange documentation that supports the inconclusive results. Not fabricated. Legitimate environmental data that explains the readings." He paused. "If you want it."
She stopped.
She turned back.
"I'll think about it," she said.
He nodded.
She left.
---
He told Mien what Dieu had said. All of it.
She listened.
When he was done, she said: "She's protecting herself as much as she can. And she wants to know the entity is okay."
"Yes."
"She's on our side," she said.
He looked at the window. "She's on a side. I'm not sure it's precisely our side."
"She cared enough to ask."
He thought about that.
"Yes," he said.
He looked at the contingency plan.
Five days.
He had information he hadn't had this morning. Dieu's risk profile: elevated but unclear. Co Tham's source: confirmed as indirect. Dieu's assessment: possibly at risk but uncertain.
The plan updated. The variables shifted.
He looked at the day forty note in the log.
He thought: I don't want to lose this before I've had it.
He thought: I still have time.
He went back to work.
Five days.
The afternoon continued, in the direction of whatever came next.
